This Walkthrough is designed to show you items and steps to take in order to complete The Secret of Monkey Island within 3 hours while grabbing trophies along the way. To help shave time you can also hold :triangle: in order to skip long dialogue sequences. To make this guide easier I have highlighted all items that you will need on your journey in red. The 3 missable gameplay trophies appear in blue text.

 

Part I - The Three Trials

From the lookout head to the Scumm Bar in the Village.

Talk to the pirate by the window, Use all dialogue options with him.

Speak to the pirate under the chandelier and go through his dialogue options.

 

Go to the right through the curtain to speak with the important-looking pirates.

Go through their dialogue options and begin the “three trials.”

Wait for the cook to leave the kitchen and when he is off the screen you can enter the kitchen door.

Pick up the hunk of meat & the unused pot.

Use the hunk of meat on the stove to pick up stew meat.

 

Walk out the back door onto the dock.

A seagull will land and begin to eat the fish.

At the end of the dock you can stomp on a loose board it it will launch the seagull in the air.

After a few times the seagull leaves and you can pick up the fish.

Leave the Scumm Bar.

 

Head back up to the past the blind lookout and continue right.

You will now be on the overhead map.

Click on the clearing in the center.

Walk inside the tent.

Speak with the two brothers and go through their dialogue options.

Be the test pilot for their cannon. And show them the pot as your “helmet.”

After being shot from the cannon you will be paid 478 pieces of eight.

 

Head back toward the scumm bar but walk past and into town by continuing right.

When you see the guy with a parrot on his shoulder, you will need to buy his map.

Walk to the left and speak with the Men of Low Moral Fiber.

Wiggle the arrow over the rat with your controller and it will run off.

Tell the men you are sorry and then run through all their dialogue options for an important story.

Enter the door on the right side in the middle.

Once inside, pick up the chicken.

Go to the right and use all dialogue options with the voodoo lady.

Leave her house and continue through the archway.

 

Once through the archway head to the alley.

Talk to the guy in the alley and then head back to the street and enter the shop.

Run through the dialogue with the shopkeeper. (ring the bell if he is not present.)

Pick up the Breath Mints, shovel and the sword to buy them.

Leave the shop.

 

Go to the overhead map.

Go to the "house" all the way to the right.

A troll will stop you, give him the fish to pass.

Knock on the door to the house.

Run through all the dialogue options with Captain Smirk

When he agrees to train Guybrush

Once trained you will need to head back out to fight random pirates in order to learn insults.

 

Go back onto the overhead map.

Now you will see a lot of people traveling on the roads.

Stand still at the “fork” and you will be in a good spot to have pirates walk into you.

When the pirates cross your path you can challenge them to a insult sword fight.

Keep doing this until a pirate tells you that you are good enough to beat the sword master.

(Learn all 16 insults and replies for the Sharp Tongue trophy.)

Go back to the shop and talk to the storekeeper. (ring the bell again if needed.)

Tell him you wish to duel the sword master.

He will hike all the way to her place and you can follow him.

Once the storekeeper is gone you can approach the sword master.

Her insults are different but your old replies still work.

You get a T-shirt when you win.

Go back to the important-looking-pirates to show them the shirt as proof.

 

Go back to the forest and as you walk around you will see yellow flowers.

Pick up the yellow flowers.

You can now begin to search for the treasure.

Look at the map you bought from the man with the parrot.

It looks like dance steps, but these are actually the directions to take in order to navigate the forest screens.

It will read something like "Left! Two-Three-Four!!

Do not worry about the "Two-Three-Four!" portion, you will only worry about the direction “left”

The directions are in relation to the screen so Left and right are normal and Back is the far side of the screen.

Follow the map directions and soon you will end up in a new area with a X on the ground off to the right.

(Do not exit or you will have to redo the steps)

Use the shovel on the X.

You find another T-shirt

Take it to give it to the important-looking-pirates

 

Walk back to town, under the archway, pass the shop, and continue to the left to the mansion.

Use the yellow petal with the stewed meat and then give the meat to the scary dogs.

Open the door and go inside.

Inside the mansion, open the door on the left and go in.

A fight breaks out and you escape automatically.

 

Leave the mansion and go to the jail which is in the area to the left of the shop.

Talk to Otis and give him a breath mint.

Now use all dialogue options with Otis.

Give him the gopher repellent in exchange for a carrot cake.

Open the carrot cake to find a file inside.

Go back to the mansion and dive back through the hole in the wall you made escaping.

Talk with Governor Marley and then leave

You get caught and thrown into the sea.

 

(Save your game and then wait for 10 minutes and Guybrush will drown.)

 

Reload your previous save file.

Pick up the idol and sword then climb out of the water.

Talk with the lookout and learn that LeChuck has kidnapped Governor Elaine Marley

Part I - The Three Trials (continued)

Go to the Scumm Bar and talk with the cook using all dialogue options.

Before you go pick up all the 5 mugs.

Go to the overhead map and head to the “lights.”

Speak with Stan and go through all Dialogue options.

You want the half sunken ship but you need to get credit first.

When you leave you get a compass from stan.

Go to see the shopkeeper to try and get credit.

 

Tell the shopkeeper that you need some credit and tell him you have a job

He’ll go get a note from the safe. (watch the combination he uses so you can open it later.)

Push = right & Pull = Left (the combination is different for each game. It will look something like: 2 right, 4 left, 1 right)

The shopkeeper finds out you do not have a job and puts the note back in the safe.

Watch the combination again

Tell him that you need to see the sword master and he will leave.

Go up to the safe and use “push” and “pull” commands in order to open the safe.

Take the note and you now have a 5000 pieces of eight credit from the shop.

 

Go back to Stan’s used ships and tell him you do not have much to spend.

Stan wants 10000 pieces of eight for it, but you’ve only got 5000, so you need to bargain.

Stan will talk about extras and say, "I think I can live without that" to everything he mentions.

Attempt to leave if he still asks too much. (he will call you back over)

Make him an offer of 5000 pieces of eight and he will agree.

 

Now you need 3 crewmembers.

Go back to the Sword Master by clicking the dot named “Sword Master” on the overhead map

Talk to her and tell her the governor has been kidnapped. She’ll join your crew.

Go back to the overhead map.

Head north-east to the dot "island".

Climb the platform and use the rubber chicken on the cable to cross the water.

Open the door to the house and enter

Talk to Meathook and tell him the governor has been kidnapped

To prove your courage you will have to touch the winged devil.

 

Go back to the prison and talk to Otis.

Tell him the governor has been kidnapped.

He will join you if you let him out.

Go to the scumm bar kitchen and fill 1 mug with grog.

Watch the mug graphic as it melts on screen.

When it gets low use the melting mug on a new mug.

Use the grog on the lock to Otis’ cell.

Now go back to your boat on the docks close to the Scumm bar.

 

 

Part II - The Journey

In your cabin open the drawer and pick up the captain’s log and read it.

Pick up the feathered pen and the ink.

Leave the room and climb up the rope ladder to pick up the jolly roger,

Climb down and enter the hatch and also through the second hatch.

In the storage room you will need the rope.

Open the red chest and pick up the fine wine.

Open the kegs for some gunpowder.

Climb up through the hatch.

Pick up the pot from the table

Open the cabinet on the left, pick up a cereal box, and open it for a toy prize

Use the prize, which happens to be a key, in the cabinet in the Captain’s Cabin

Go back to the captain’s cabin and use the key in the cabinet.

There’s a chest inside, pick it up.

Open it and pick up a piece of paper and some cinnamon sticks.

 

Go back down to the kitchen.

Add to the pot: Cinnamon sticks, fine wine, jolly roger, gunpowder, ink, breath mints, the rubber chicken, and cereal.

 

When you wake up go to the storage room and pick up some more gunpowder.

Use the gunpowder on the cannon and use the rope on the cannon.

In the kitchen use the T-shirt in the fire under the pot and you get a flaming mass.

 

Go back up to the deck and light the cannon fuse with the flaming mass

Quickly use the pot and Guybrush will climb into the cannon

The cannon will fire if you are not fast enough and you will have to repeat the steps.

Part III - Under Monkey Island

You end up on the beach of Monkey Island.

Pick up the banana next to the tree and read the note on the tree.

Go into the jungle to bring up the overhead map

Head over to the fort. (find the volcano full of water and it is on the north edge hardly visible)

Pick up the rope and the spyglass.

Push the cannon, and pick up the gunpowder and cannonball.

Talk with Herman

Leave the fort and go to the right on the overhead map.

Travel to the beach over by the volcano to find another note.

 

Go to the spot called "river fork" in the middle of the map.

There’s a note with a rock on top of it. Pick up both things and read the note.

Look at the rock, it’s a piece of flint.

Cross the bridge and climb up the footholds.

You’ll find some primitive “art” and a note to read.

Climb up some more footholds.

 

Talk with Herman again.

Use the spyglass, Guybrush will at where the catapult is pointing.

Push or pull the “art” using the spyglass to aim until Guybrush sees the tree.

Climb up the footholds and push the rock sitting at the edge of the cliff.

If you don’t hit the tree, push or pull the catapult and pick up a new rock from the pile

Head back down to the bridge and over to the rock dam.

Use the gunpowder with the dam.

Now use the piece of flint with the any metal object in your inventory to create a spark.

 

Head down the stream to the “pond” and read the note.

Herman will show up again so talk to him.

Pick up the rope.

Head back to the beach you started on and pick up the 2 bananas.

Go into the jungle again and select the place called "crack".

Use both ropes to get down by attaching one at the top and the other midway down the crack

Pick up the oars and climb back up.

 

Go back to the beach.

Use the oars with the rowboat to bring up the overhead map.

Head to the right, then continue up the coastline until you can dock at a new beach.

Herman again so speak with him again.

Read the note.

Enter the jungle and select the spot named "village" from the overhead map.

Go all the way to the left and pick up the bananas

Now go to the right and get locked in the hut.

Read the memo.

Pick up the skull from the floor and open the loose board underneath.

Exit through the hole.

You’ll escape while the Cannibals are talking.

(continue to get caught to see the elaborate ways they try to imprison you and earn a trophy)

 

Now go to the row boat and head to the original beach

Go into the jungle and go to the monkey.

Give the five bananas to it and he will follow you.

 

Go into the jungle again to bring up the overhead map.

Go all the way to the right to an area called "clearing".

Go to the right and pull the middle arm on the totem pole.

The gate opens and the monkey will help.

Pick the wimpy little idol.

 

On your way back to your row boat, stop off at the long skinny beach that leads to the monkey head

Pick up the memo on the beach

 

Head back to the Cannibals’ village.

Go to the hut entrance and then head back out and the Cannibals will stop you again.

Tell them, "Don’t eat me! I’ll give you anything!"

Give them the wimpy little idol.

Pick up the banana picker and leave.

You will bump into Herman again.

Tell him you have his banana picker and he will give you the monkey head key.

 

 

Now walk and row all the way back to the Great Monkey Head.

Use the monkey head key in the ear of the Monkey Head and go inside.

You cannot get anywhere yet so head back to the cannibals.

 

When they ask how they can repay you reply

"I’m looking for somebody".

"That’s okay. The people I’m looking for aren’t living."

You learn that they need a root and LeChuck stole it. Say,

"Where is he hiding it?"

"Can’t you just go down there and kick him out?"

"I’m off to find LeChuck and get the root!"

The Cannibals say you need something to find him,

"Why are you guys talking in pig Latin?"

They mention the Navigators head, is the only way to get through the catacombs.

Give them the leaflet.

Go back to the Monkey Head and enter the catacombs.

Go all the way to the right until you get to the next screen.

Now use the Navigators head and follow his directions.

When you arrive at LeChuck’s ship beg the navigator’s head for his necklace until he gives it to you.

Use the necklace to wear it.

 

Board the ghost ship and Guybrush will be invisible.

Go to the left and open the door. Go inside.

Inside you’ll find LeChuck.

Use the magnetic compass on the key on the wall.

Leave the room and go down through the hatch.

Go through the next door

Pick up a chicken to get a feather.

Go back to the sleeping ghost and tickle his feet 2 times with the feather.

Pick up the jug o’grog.

Go back to the other room and use they key to unlock the hatch and enter it.

Use the jug o’grog with the dish in front of the big rat

Pick up some of the cooking grease.

Go back to the main deck and use the grease on the door and enter.

Pick up the ghost tools from the wall.

Go back to the glowing crate and use the ghost tools to open it.

Pick up the root.

Leave the ship and enter the cave again.

 

Give the root to the Cannibals and they leave to make a potion.

The Cannibals return and give you the magic seltzer bottle.

Leave the village.

Bob is still there so speak with him.

After that your crew, or Hermann, shows up talk to them and you’ll sail back to Melee Island.

 

 

Part IV - Guybrush Kicks Butt

You are now back on the docks at Melee Island.

Go to the right and a ghost will stop you.

Spray him with the magic seltzer bottle.

Go to the church between the shop and the jail.

Spray the next ghost you see with the magic seltzer bottle.

Say something to stop the wedding and confront LeChuck

Talk to “Elaine”

Talk some more with LeChuck.

LeChuck will begin hitting Guybrush and he flies to different areas of the map.

When you land at the ship yard you break the grog machine

Quickly pick up the root beer and use it on LeChuck.

This walkthrough is great! It really helped me to get all the trophies (still need to get Human Cannonball, but I'll do that later). The only part I didn't understand was where I could find the breath mints, but I found them later on. Fantastic work, Lostsaint18!

Yeah I'm stuck on that part right now, where did you find them at? I've ran the cursor all over the screen and nothing pops up showing the breath mints... Any help would be appreciated since I must be missing something pretty obvious I guess :think:

I didn't get the breath mints when I first visited the shop either, but later on when you go to the prison and talk to the prisoner, you're prompted to find breath mints. When you go to the shop then and talk to the shopkeeper, you'll get the mints.

 

If I'm not mistaken, you can't get them at the point the guide tells you to.

 

Otherwise, excellent guide and helped a lot.

 

EDIT: Just realised I replied to a post over two weeks old... Well nevermind, maybe it'll help someone.

A quick heads up to anyone using this walk-through.

 

If you're going for 100%, be sure to save your game before using the primitive artwork to catapult the rock in Part III. It's not explicitly mentioned in the guide and you'll miss the "Marooned Everyone" trophy if you follow it to the letter.

You don't need to light the canon with the fire. It will light itself when you use the pot. :)

Just wanted to confirm you can't get the breath mints from the store before you talk to Otis in the jail.

 

Also confirming that saving before entering the monkey head, finishing the game without saving, then reloading the save - go back and use the catapult to sink the ship - and finishing the game a second time in one sitting (without turning the ps3 off) got me the Marooned trophy as well.

 

Someone said: "You don't need to light the canon with the fire. It will light itself when you use the pot." - this is not true, you can't use the pot until you light the fuse.

 

Thanks LostSaint18 by the way, got my 100% in two playthroughs. I had to enjoy the story the first time around (took me 6 hours). Second playthrough using the walkthrough and skipping through most conversations took little over 2 hours :)
