Overview:

  • Estimated difficulty: 4/10
  • Estimated time to platinum: 8-12 Hours
  • Offline trophies: 31 (7(B), 20(S), 3(G), 1 (P))
  • Online trophies: N/A
  • Minimum number of playthroughs required: 2
  • Number of missable trophies: Didn't Miss a Beat
  • Glitched trophies: None
  • Do cheats affect trophies?: N/A
  • Does difficulty affect trophies: Yes

Step 1: Play your first playthrough on Hard difficulty, collecting all the collectibles before the point of no return.

A majority of the trophies in Strider are story related. Or rather, there is a trophy tied to defeating each boss in the game. As such, you will be earning a majority of the trophies through the natural progression of this game. You will also most likely unlock the kill related trophies naturally. If not, you can earn them relatively easily at anytime before the point of no return as enemies infinitely respawn throughout the areas in the game. Please see each respective trophy for details.

Having said that, you will want to play your first playthrough of this game on Hard not only to get it out of the way first, but this should prepare you for your second playthrough where you will be completing the game again on Normal in under 4 hours. Hard difficulty is not challenging at all, especially if you abuse a few attacks during battles (see guide for details). Although the game is set in a "open" platforming world, the game is incredibly linear. Certain sections of the city may be blocked off requiring you to earn a specific ability first and your next objective will always be marked on your map; so you'll always know where to go.

You will also want to collect all the collectibles in the game during this step as well. Not only to improve your chances in succeeding in battle, but also because there are trophies tied to collecting them.

You will only need to collect:

  • Upgrades (Yellow Upward Arrows)
  • Fallen Striders (8-Bit Strider Icons)
  • and Health Canisters (Green Hexagons)

All collectibles with the exception of Fallen Striders will be marked on your map until you pick them up, when you're near one. The POW pickups (numbered collectibles on the maps) that unlock concept arts and whatnot are not needed for trophy purposes, though you may pick them up as well if you want. A majority of the collectibles are on the way as you progress through the game despite a few of them requiring you to come back later with a needed upgrade, so you may want to collect them to save time from having to backtrack later.

Near the end of the game, you will be tasked in boarding an airship, the Balrog, to unlock the final key to the final area in the game. Not only can you not enter this area again after completing it, it is also the area that is tied to the only missable trophy in the game. Please see "Didn't Miss A Beat" for details.

You have until the point of no return to collect all the collectibles (with the exception of the Canisters inside the point of no return). If you wish to beat the game first before cleaning up the collectibles, you can do so by simply choosing not to save at the end of the credits. If you do choose to save though, you will overwrite your current save with your completed progress, and you will have to re-collect everything on a new game so beware.

At the end of this step, you will have earned at least the following:

Master of Unlocking
(B)

Red Dragon Awaits
(S)

A Cold Wind Blows
(S)

Another Soulless Copy
(S)

I Got You!
(S)

Run Crying Back To Your Masters
(S)

Spice Must Flow
(S)

That's No Moon
(B)

Death of the Iron Ruler
(S)

You Must Defeat Shen Long
(S)

Dragon Slayer
(S)

All Fall Down
(B)

Shock the Monkey
(S)

Don't Drink the Water
(S)

The Circle is Now Complete
(S)

Equal in the Face of Death
(S)

Now I am the Master
(S)

Special Class-A
(G)

For collecting all the collectibles:

Health Nut
(S)

You've Got The Power
(S)

Cuts Like A Knife
(S)

Remember The Fallen
(S)

Collector of Collecting
(S)

You will also most likely unlock these trophies naturally:

Untouchable
(G)

I'm Rubber, You're Glue
(B)

Eye of the Tiger
(B)

Didn't Miss A Beat
(B)

Meet Cypher's Edge
(B)

Step 2: Play through the game a second time on Normal difficulty, completing the game in less than 4 hours.

Having explored the entirety of Kazakh City, you should have no trouble remembering where to go and progress through the game in the quickest fashion possible. As such, your second playthrough will simply consist of breezing through the game on Normal in under 4 hours. Though you may want to ignore everything, it is highly recommended you pick up any or all Upgrades for Strider; to allow you to perform better during boss battles. It should and will not cost you a lot of time, since all of the upgrades are on your way from one objective to the next.

If you missed out on Untouchable on your first playthrough, now is a good time to earn that now too as soon as you obtain your first upgrade, the Slide Assault. Please see "Untouchable" for details.

At the end of this step, you will have earned the following trophies in the following order:

Class-A Ninja
(S)

Speed Demon
(G)

Strider Master
(P)

Earn all Trophies in Strider

Mission accomplished, congratulations on earning this fun and easy platinum!

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/2186/EF6.jpg Master of Unlocking (B) :tagstory:

Charge the first Novo

Story-related and cannot be missed.

This will be the first trophy you unlock in the game. After defeating your first elite guard, you'll earn the Charged Cypher (:square:(Hold)). You'll be required to use your newly earned ability on a Novo switch to open a gate. Use it on the switch to continue progress and you'll unlock the trophy for doing so.

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/2186/815.jpg You've Got The Power (S)

Collect all Energy Upgrades

Scattered throughout the game are collectibles that Strider Hiryu can collect to improve his efficiency in combat. Energy upgrades, if it's not self explanatory enough, improves Hiryu's energy usage capabilities. There are 15 energy upgrades total; 10 upgrades that increase the capacity of your energy storage and 5 that will increase your energy recharge rate. Energy upgrades and HP upgrades appear as yellow upward arrows on your map. Once you're within the vicinity of each upgrade, they will be marked on your map until you pick it up. Upgrades are usually located in alternative hidden pathways as you're progressing each area, often requiring you to use an ability or skill you may or may not have to get to them.

You can see how many upgrades you are currently missing or currently have by referencing the game's map of each area or accessing your status page via :select:.

For a map of each area, please see this post for details.

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/2186/61D.jpg Remember The Fallen (S)

Collect all Fallen Striders

In addition to upgrades, the bodies of previous Striders (those who came to the city before) are also something that Strider Hiryu can choose to collect throughout the Kazakh City. There is a total of 12 fallen striders.

Unlike the other collectibles, picking these up will not improve or upgrade Strider's capabiliies. Instead, to commemorate the efforts of these fallen Stiders, you'll be given the ability to don their costumes/skins and apply it onto Hiryu. Unfortunately, they do not grant you bonus or new abilities as they're really just color/pallet swaps, but it does keep the game fresh. Also, unlike the other upgrades where they would be marked on your map when you're near one of them, Fallen Striders do not appear on your map at all.

You can see how many Fallen Striders you've currently picked up or have by accessing your costumes page via :select:.

For a map of each area, please see this post for details.

Collect all Health Upgrades

Scattered throughout the game are collectibles that Strider Hiryu can collect to improve his efficiency in combat. Health upgrades, if its not self explanatory enough, improves Strider's overall health bar. There is a total of 10 health upgrades that you can and need to collect for the trophy. Energy upgrades and HP upgrades appear as yellow upward arrows on your map. Once you're within the vicinity of each upgrade, they will appear on your map. Upgrades are usually located in alternative hidden pathways as you're progressing each area, often requiring you to use an ability or skill you may or may not have to get to them.

Collect All Kunai Upgrades

Scattered throughout the game are collectibles that Strider Hiryu can collect to improve his efficiency in combat. Kunai upgrades improves the efficiency of Hiryu's only range weapon in the game. There is a total of 11 kunai upgrades that you need to collect; 4 increases the number of kunais you can throw at once, 3 improves their range, and the other 4 being the Reflective, Explosive, Ultra-Cold and Magnetic powers. Like Energy upgrades and HP upgrades, they appear as yellow upward arrows on your map. Once you're within the vicinity of each upgrade, they will appear on your map. Upgrades are usually located in alternative hidden pathways as you're progressing each area, often requiring you to use an ability or skill you may or may not have to get to them.

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/2186/99B.jpg Collector of Collecting (S)

Collect all Large Canisters

As with the other collectibles, there are also health canisters that Hiryu will run into throughout the game. Destroying them will, well, release huge amounts of health points replenishing your health (duh!). For the purpose of this trophy, you will need to break open each of these canisters scattered throughout Kazakh City. Like Energy upgrades and HP upgrades, they are marked and appear on your map when you're within the vicinity of one of them; though they appear as green crystal shaped hexagons instead.

Note that the 4 canisters located in the "Above Kazakh" map (The Balrog Airship) are not required for this trophy. I missed one and was still able to unlock the trophy. Also keep in mind that there are 8 canisters located in the area past the point of no return, so do not fret and assume you missed out on this trophy when you've collected all the canisters in each area of the city. 4 canisters as shown in the maps below, 2 in the elevator section that follows, and 2 more after the elevator section. The last 4 canisters are in areas that do not have maps, though the areas are small enough that hey are clearly visible so you can't miss them.

For a map of each area, please see this post for details.

Complete the Balrog without falling

The only missable trophy in this game. Near the end of the game, you'll be required to use Option-C to travel on high onto an airship to activate the third key to access the final area in the game. You'll begin this area on the far left side of the map on top of a smaller ship. For the purpose of this trophy, your task is to make it all the way to the right onto the mothership of the Balrog without falling, by jumping on from one small ship onto the other. The wind will be blowing you back constantly, so time your jumps. If you take your time and effectively use double jump and the plasma catapult, you should be fine.

Fortunately, the game sets a checkpoint in the beginning of this area until you reach the Balrog so if you do mess up and fall, you can simply let enemies kill you and restart the checkpointt. You can also quit to the main menu and load up your save if you prefer, but that'll put you much further back in the game.

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/2186/200.jpg Speed Demon (G) :tagdatetime:

Complete the game in under 4 hours

If you followed the roadmap as suggested, you will be going for this 4 hour speed run trophy on Normal difficulty unlocking "Class-A Ninja" through the process as well. The game isn't long at all, and with your knowledge of each of the areas from your first playthrough, you should have no problem completing the game under 4 hours at all.

Some tips:

  • Although not needed, it is highly recommended you collect any or all upgrades you pass along as you're progressing. Almost all of the HP and Energy upgrades are along the way, and only takes a minute to collect them. Follow the maps in the guide as you go through each area to save time in regards to where the upgrades are located.
  • Abuse Option-C in battle, especially boss battles. Not only is it ridiculously overpowered, but combined with the energy upgrades you've supposed to have collected, you'll be able to abuse and spam this attack to make quick work of each battle you come across.
  • And on that note about battles, most of the fights in this game can be avoided. You'd really only need to fight and defeat enemies in areas that are locked down and you need to destroy all the enemies in the area to open a gate. Otherwise, just jump and avoid enemies as much as you can.
  • Make use of your plasmas. Explosive makes quick work of almost every enemy in the game. The ultra-cold plasma is also useful as it freezes enemies allowing you to simply run past them to your next objective.

Unfortunately, I never kept track of my own times during my speed run. However, to give you an idea of the times you should be striving to meet during certain sections of the game, fellow member DarkAmon has kindly posted his which you can find below:

i wrote down my time at each boss (after the kill) for my speed run

Ouroborus - 6 min

Pei - 15

Pei& Nang - 27

Solo - 41

Winds - 102

Millipede - 110

Graviton - 123

General - 134

Xi Wang - 146

Ouroboros 2 - 153

Mechpan - 208

Juroung - 221

Solo 2 - 240

Meio - 2:54:45

spend some time getting upgrades just incase. Solo 2 beat me twice and Xi Wang beat me once.

i think i was at 34% with All Health and 5 or 6 Energy upgrades.

Complete game on Hard difficulty

You will be playing on Hard as suggested on your first playthrough. Do not worry though, as this game isn't hard at all. You should have no issues breezing through this game, especially considering you'll be grabbing all collectibles on this playthrough.

In terms of tips, the same tips for "Speed Demon" applies to this playthrough as well. Abuse your Robot Eagle, make use of your plasmas, and just simply take your time. You will be collecting all the collectibles in the game anyways, so you should not be having much trouble completing any battle.

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/2186/2ED.jpg Class-A Ninja (S) :tagdifficulty:

Complete game on Normal difficulty

You will unlock this trophy alongside with "Speed Demon". Please see that trophy for details.

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/2186/912.jpg Eye of the Tiger (B)

Defeat 20 enemies using Panther

The Tetrapodal Robo-Panther, aka. Option-B. You will earn this ability after vanquishing the Queen Mother of the West, Xi Wang Mu. It is activated via :l1:+:square:. This attack unleashes a panther that rips through enemies by running against them; the more enemies it hits, the more damage it does. As such, this ability is best used against a row of enemies.

For the purpose of this trophy, you will need to kill 20 enemies with Option-B. You'll most likely earn this trophy naturally anyways, but in terms of the best place to do this, it is right after you unlock this ability. Enemies will conveniently be lined up in a row in the next few areas. Kill 20 enemies with the panther and you'll earn this easy trophy.

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/2186/F12.jpg Untouchable (G)

Defeat 20 consecutive enemies, without being hit

Just as the trophy description says, you'll need to eliminate 20 enemies without getting hit. If action platformers are your forte, you will probably have earned this trophy naturally just from playing through the game.

However, if you want an easy method to earn this trophy and get it out of the way, an easy place to attempt this trophy is right at the beginning of the game; right after you gain the Slide Assault ability. When you exit through the door, you'll face 4 enemies. Simply run up to them and slash at them, go back through the door and back into the room where you got the upgrade, and back out. They will have respawned. If you kill them fast enough, they should not even have a chance to hit you.

Defeat 10 enemies using Reflect

You will gain the ability to reflect bullets with the Reflect Cypher ability for defeating Solo (see "I Got You!" for details). This enables Hiryu to deflect bullets, by timing your cypher strikes from your sword with enemy bullets. Note that you can only reflect bullets with your default plasma ().

For the purpose of this trophy, you need to defeat 10 enemies by deflecting their bullets back at them. Like with the other kill related trophies, you will most likely unlock this trophy naturally anyways. However, the best time to do this trophy if you want it out of the way, is simply right after getting it. You'll be pitched against a hallway and a wall of turrets serving as a tutorial of some sort. You'll need to reflect the bullets back at them to destroy them in order to pass through.

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/2186/AE3.jpg Meet Cypher's Edge (B)

Max out the Hit Meter 25 times

The Hit Meter is the upper left corner of your screen, next to your health and energy bars. The meter is filled by continuously hitting enemies, or will drain if you take damage; it will also completely drain and revert back to zero after a few sections of inactivity. Filling it up allows Hiryu to enter a powered up state that allows him to deal extra damage; the screen will glow and the game will slow down to indicate that the meter has been filled.

Unless you're simply great at dodging enemy attacks and bullets in this game, you will most likely only be able to fill up your Hit Meter a few times through your natural progression of the game. Luckily, there is a little exploit at the end of the game that you can do to earn this trophy relatively easily. In the area past the point of no return, you will be tasked in going up two towers to open up two switches in order to progress. Inside each tower are Elite Guards. Defeat the ones at the bottom, climb up to the grated platform and you should see a few more on top of you. Rather than climb, stay clinging onto the platform and slash up. You will not deal any damage to them as they'll teleport out of the way, yet you'll earn hit points for your meter. Simply repeat this method until you unlock the trophy.

Strider - Collectible Maps

There is a huge amount of collectibles of different types in Strider that you can collect:

  • Upgrades that increase your stats (Health and Energy)
  • Costumes/Skins (Fallen Striders)
  • Large Canisters (Health pickups)
  • Intel/Concept Art (POW cubes)

While getting 100% completion on collectibles isn't required, a number of them are tied to unlocking certain trophies. As such, you will need to pick up all upgrades, fallen striders, and canisters as they are all tied to a trophy. POW upgrades (numbered collectibles on the maps) that unlock concept arts and whatnot, you do not need to collect these as they are not tied to any trophy. You may still want to collect these though for your own enjoyment or completion purposes.

All maps are created by Sainiku from Steam, so all credit goes to him.

Awesome guide, BreadSkin!

I couldn't shake the thought of Guacamelee when reviewing the guide as it seems similar, is it? And how does it compare?

Like Guacamelee, its a ''Metroidvania''. I will say Guacamelee is better but Strider is still fun. One thing you have to remember is that unlike Guacamelee, Strider is strictly Analog Stick for movement.

I was turned off by that because I always play 2D games (or 2.5D) with the D-Pad but I got used to the Analog Stick.

Thanks for the guide - would had "missed a beat" for sure without it. Had to look up a couple of collectibles, but otherwise it was good fun. Meio Prime was a bloody tough customer on Hard. Took a while to find a safe-ish pattern. Gotta be extra patient with this one. Now for the Speed Run.

I just got this from PS+ for free for July, and was curious is some collectibles only obtainable with certain abilities? If so how do I back track to get some from beginning some were out of reach from jumps or electricity etc, because I have missed quite a few.

Yep, some of them require the various weapons you upgrade to. Just grab the easy ones then before the point of no return then back track through.

Anyone else find this game really easy even on hard, I'm only about half way but every boss so far I've beaten first time, the fact that you can just jump every where and not really get hit makes it a joke, especially as nearly every boss type enemy has a pattern where they will stop every now and then and just wail on them. Gotta love mashing square over and over again, lol.

Also is annoying you have to backtrack to get to over areas, I tried going back into a area yesterday after getting the double jump and found no way of getting back, it was blocked by electricity!
