Introduction:

First off, this is my very first guide, so any feedback is welcome. Skylanders Giants is the sequel to Skylanders Spyro's Adventures. You can use all your Skylanders figures from the first game for this. Kaos has returned to try to take over Skylands again, it is up to you and your Skylanders to defeat him and his Archeyan robots.

Remember, have fun! It's mostly an easy game so just play casually. Nightmare mode can be a pain, as the title suggests, but it is possible, especially with multiple Skylanders.

Step 1: Story Mode

Playthrough the game. Now is a good time to level up any new Skylanders, and all the old Skylanders can now level up to 15 also

Make sure to go into the Arena battles on the ship, and also the Kaos minigame on the ship.

Step 2: Nightmare Mode

This is the most difficult level. You cannot change difficulty on Nightmare mode.It isn't too hard until the later levels. Having multiple Skylanders certainly helps.

Step 3: Clean Up

Go back through the levels via chapter select to get any missed trophies.

Conclusion:

This is a fun game that is a good sequel to the original Skylanders game. Co-op is well done, and switching characters is easy. Enjoy!

For "To the Max", "Upgrade Uniter" and "Spend that Loot", note that you can use figures from the first game here. Just change ownership to yourself.

I have all my 3 starter kit figures from the first game maxed out previously. Got the "Upgrade Uniter" immediately, since there is no new skill to learn. My Spyro had maxed cash but as the cap is increased to 65k in the second game, I had to get some 5k more for "Spend that loot", but that wasn't a big grind. The max level in the first game was 10, so just grind a few more levels to 15 for "To the Max".

If you have played the first game, this will help quite a fair bit. Since you will probably need more figures anyway, especially for Nightmare mode, reusing (and further leveling) previous figures is very useful.

Got my plat and would like to contribute some tips. (@smurfn, if you want to incorporate these to the guide, pls feel free to do so.)

Nightmare Avenger

You will unlock Nightmare difficulty after completing the story once. However you cannot just change difficulty to Nightmare and redo every chapter. You have to start a new game, on another save slot, and play through the story on Nightmare difficulty. Once Nightmare difficulty is selected at the start, you cannot change difficulty during the playthrough. Since you are starting a new game, all story progress will NOT be carried over. This includes chapters completed, areas visited, collectibles (soul gems, legendary treasures, hats, luck-o-tron wheels, etc.), skystones and so on. However character progress, which are stored in the figures, will be intact. This includes the level of each character, skills unlocked, gold, hat equipped, etc.

During your Nightmare run, you might want to focus on completing each chapter instead of sidetracking to look for collectibles. This is especially so in the later chapters. The only collectible that helps with the Nightmare run is the Luck-o-tron wheel of health. Even that doesn't make a significant difference in the playthrough and is probably not be worth the risk. In the extreme case, finding yourself ambushed by 3 Gill Grunts or Flameslingers can easily result in all your characters KO'ed in quick succession. Stay on the main path and get through the chapter. If you do have to restart a chapter (eg. all KO'ed), note that any collectibles you have found during that failed run will remain collected. Upon restart, you do not have to repeat the sidetracking and take the risk again.

Completionist

[...Pretty easy to do on the first level.]

If you are doing this on the first chapter, note that the Luck-o-tron wheel can be a bit tricky to find. After clearing the chompy pit, there is a series of bounce pads to get you to the top. Don't go to the top yet, instead use the first bounce pad, then go to the right. You will need a giant to lift the boulder to get through. Then drop back down to the chompy pit from there. The pit will close up and you will have to clear it once again. You will then notice that there is still one chompy up on the platform on the right. This is your cue that you have to use the bounce pad, go right to reach that chompy, drop down again and clear it one more time. The wheel will appear after that.

Great Gladiator!

I recommend using Tree Rex for these. His shockwave attack (hold X to slam onto the ground) clears the ring quickly. For the last challenge in each series where you must not get hit, just be familiar with where the enemies appear. Use his projectile attack (O button) to take out some enemies further away. Give him a hat with good speed boost to let him move around quicker to avoid attacks from bigger foes.

Elemental Enthusiast

There are 3 elemental areas in Chapter 1, corresponding to the elements of the 3 starter pack characters (life, air, undead). You have to unlock all 3 areas during the same run to get this trophy.

Autogyro Pyrotechnician

You need to destroy all the planes. I would suggest that you hold the L2 button all the time during the on-rail robot segments (this fires your cannon) and keep mashing square button non-stop (this throws punches), except during the big robot fights.

Learn the patterns. There are a couple of easy-to-miss ones. At the beginning you will go through a narrow passage. The robot will turn right for you to destroy the enemies there. Then it will center again but after a few steps, it will turn left for more enemies there. In between the right and left portions, there is one plane taking off in the distance. You have a very short time to destroy it, so make sure you shoot it down. After the first on-foot segment, there will be another passage like that, but turning left first, then right. As before, make sure to destroy the plane taking off in the distance in between.

(At times the enemies launch a set of 4 bomb thingies each with a helicopter propeller. I don't think it is necessary to destroy all of those.)

Talker in a Strange Land

Some Wilikins appear in multiple places, make sure you talk to them every time. Particularly, look out for the girl Seraphina (she's the one who helps you at the boss fight). She appears inside the 2 tunnels with the flowing red and blue magical energies. One is Wing Caves, located at where you roll the big bomb for the first time. The other is Roc's Elbow, after the whole series of crates that move up and down. Activate the switcher to get into the Wilikins realm (full color) so that she is awake and talk to her in the tunnels.

Clean Jersey

On the main deck of Flynn's ship, go through the hatch at the bottom left of the screen to get to the gun deck. Activate the gun to start a mini-game. (Note that after playing a mini-game, you have to exit back to the main deck before another mini-game can be started.) There are 3 mini-games appearing randomly: Stop the Sheeps, More Burning Barrels, and Stop the Artillery Shells. "Kaos' rockets" refers to the artillery shells in the latter. Don't get hit by any of them during the Stop the Artillery Shells mini-game to get this trophy. Much easier done with 2 players. Note that depending on the character, your rate of fire and type of projectile vary. So try other characters to see which works best.

Power leveling and gold farming

Personally I recommend using chapter 11 (Drill-X's Big Rig) for farming gold and chapter 15 (Lost City of Arkus) for leveling. Obviously later chapters tend to yield more gold and xp but they may include time-waster segments (flying plane, fire traps, etc.), so I stick to these chapters.

With a brand new figure, I will start with chapter 11. (Before that, on Flynn's ship, set up as many luck-o-tron wheels of wealth as you can. For a brand new figure, you will want more gold early to buy all the skills. Give the character a good hat too.) Even a level 1 new character can complete this level if you skip the final boss fight. Just exit (back to the ship or chapter select this chapter again) just before going into the boss fight arena. If you get KO'ed at any time, restart chapter when prompted. Since you are farming for character progress, those are stored on the figure, so it does not matter that you restart a chapter, nothing will be lost. Skip some of the rooms (those with platforming puzzles) to save time, or just enter and pick up easy-to-reach wealth items and leave. Skip the elemental and giant areas too.

Each run through the chapter should take a little over 10 minutes and will get you more than 3000 gold. If you are using a new character, after each run, return to the ship to purchase skill upgrades. Then repeat the chapter again. After about 4 or 5 runs, you should have purchased all skills and reached level 10.

You can continue on chapter 11 or switch over to chapter 15 for quicker experience gain. Chapter 15 can be tough, depending on what character you are using. This is also a good place to experiment with your character's skills, you might be surprised by some seemingly weak characters and discover their usefulness in certain situations. (Before that, on Flynn's ship, set up as many luck-o-tron wheels of experience as you can.) Anyway, go as far as you can, until you get KO'ed (just restart chapter) or when you reach the puzzle at the end (the 2 lasers for opening the door; don't waste time doing that, just chapter select again or return to ship).

Depending on the character, it should take 2 hours to max the character (level 15 and all skills learnt, not max gold though). You may also want to do some of the Heroic Challenges to increase your Skylander's stats. Once you are familiar with each challenge, it can be quite easy.

By the way, a solution to the unskippable lock puzzle in chapter 11: RRR-LLLLL-RRR-L-RRR (perfect score).

If anyone intends to get more Skylanders to supplement the 3 starter pack characters (you most likely need to, in order to get through Nightmare difficulty), I recommend getting the triple character pack from the first game consisting of Drobot, Flameslinger and Stump Smash. (I have series 1 and 2 Drobot, they play exactly the same. The series 2 Drobot does not have any additional skill, so getting the series 1 works just as well. All figures from the first game work on this second game.)

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41aVAWK0lOL._SL500_AA300_.jpg

Drobot and Flameslinger are 2 of the most powerful characters. Drobot plays like Cynder and Spyro, except that he does not have charge attack. However his 4 laser beams are fast and furious (explode when hitting target) and can reach much longer range, making him a great attacker. Flameslinger's multiple flaming arrows (explode too) are powerful and his volley shot (triggered quickly with the O button) rains arrows down onto enemies, even if they are on higer or lower platform.

Stump Smash is rather lame, but surprise!, he is very useful in later chapters against the bigger enemies. While his acorn projectiles are slow and weak (and he only shoots 2 of them, after skill upgrade), there is one useful unadvertised feature - they act as decoys. The enemies tend to turn towards where the acorns are hitting and go attack the acorns instead, giving you free shot at them using said acorns. Just be patient, under the right situations, Stump Smash can slowly but surely help you through the tough spots. (On a similar note, Zook's mortar attack work as decoy too. Spamming mortar attack, by hitting O button, will get you through most tough spots.)

Another character you should consider is Terrafin. He can go underground for extended period, dealing damage to enemies that he swims pass while underground, and thus avoid taking damage from big bosses. He is particularly useful against Drill-X and the final boss. (There seem to be a bug with Terrafin though. As he swims around underground, he picks up health and wealth drops, however the health drops do not heal him, bummer.)

Those, and the starter pack (Cynder, Tree Rex, Jet-Vac), is basically the cast of characters that got me through Nightmare difficulty.

By the way, I find the giant characters (I have Bouncer and Crusher) rather useless in-game, even in normal difficulty. Tree Rex is probably the only giant you will need.

One hint to figure collectors: You do not need to remove the figure from its packaging in order to use it in the game. Just place the whole package on the Portal. The game will recognise it, read and write to it, without problem. (Only difficulty is when you want to play co-op, as it may be a bit tricky putting 2 figures on the portal with their packaging.) Your figures will stay in mint condition even though you have played with them.

When you put Jet-Vac on the portal, press Select, go to Upgrades, then scroll thru the skills to the one after the branching in the skill path. It will tell you that in order to learn this skill, you need the soul gem located in Autogyro Adventure (ie. chapter 14). So you are right, it should be chapter 14, not 15. (Can't remember where exactly in the level though.)

Similarly, Tree Rex's soul gem is shown as being in Molekins Mountain (ie. chapter 12). If I remember correctly, this is at the end where you have to do a block-moving puzzle, then before you drop down to the platform below, remember to push a block down first. That block will stack on top of another block below, and with some simple pushing, you should be able to reach the soul gem that is in plain sight, before going in to the arena.

  • 3 weeks later...

Time required to Platinum:

If you're collecting everything, chapters can take as long as 30mins. When you race through them it is a lot shorter, ~10-15mins.

1st playthrough: ~9 hours

2nd playthrough: ~4 hours

+ Arena... ~1 hour?

Recommended Figures:

I had figures from the first game and played co-op, so it was quick. I'd highly recommend:

Prism Break (Crystaleer path): His "Triple Crystal Shard" move acts as a good barrier and enemies see the crystals as targets. It hits an area for 40-60dmg with each crystal and can strike enemies on different platforms.

Sonic Boom (Medea Griffin path): Babies assist in attacking and enemies will try to attack them. She's quick and the roar attack does decent damage, hits multiple enemies.

Drobot (Master Blaster path): His range is crazy, so much so that it used to glitch the first game because I could kill enemies that were off the screen. I never had that trouble in Giants though. Repeated blaster hits can disrupt enemy attacks.

Flameslinger (Marksman path): Long range, shoots three arrows at once, very fast. The "Volley Shot" damages larger enemies and groups quite well and it can hit enemies on different platforms.

General Tips:

- I'd second what someone else said about the giants, none were very useful in combat, but Tree-Rex was ok.

- Don't bother buying Lightcore figures, they lack the additional power of S2 figures and the bonus only triggers once. (Prism break does look cool though)

- Keep your distance from enemies. Attacks that don't look like they should have hit you, will hit you.

- It never hurts to have two of your favorite figures. I've got reposed figures of Prism Break, Flameslinger, Sonic Boom and Chop Chop.

- When playing on nightmare difficulty, be aware of areas you can just run through without defeating enemies.

Conclusion:

I didn't enjoy Giants nearly as much as the previous game. The levels were longer and didn't have the same personality. There were fewer chapters, 16 compared to 21, but the game seemed to drag on and it felt like a grind to get through the story the first time. Nightmare mode felt like it was there to get you to buy more figures and getting 65,000 gold was a really pointless achievement. None of the new figures added much to the gameplay, Giants weren't really necessary. It was fun to dust off some of my old figures and bust some troll heads, but this doesn't feel like as much of a winner as the first game.

Giants weren't really necessary.

I kinda felt the same way after the first 2-3 days and the gimmick wore off. while Giants usually do a ton of damage, they have huge hit boxes and just takes hit after hit after hit. I would rather just grab Ignitor (Any version of Ignitor) and plow down the enemies. Or better yet, just take someone ranged. Using the Giants makes the game harder than it needs to be.

The only time I use Giants now is when I play co-op. Even then, I'm not the one using the Giant.
