Section 02. Introduction

Silent Hill 2 HD is an HD upping of a game that originally came out on the PS2 over ten years ago and is one of two games part of the HD Collection. There was a later version released with additional content; this HD version includes the added content. The most important thing is this platinum is hard to obtain. The hardest and final trophy will have you performing almost every lesser trophy in a single playthrough. You will have to learn the game and excel in playing it if you want to walk away with all the trophies, so be ready for trouble.

Section 2.1 - What to know

There are a few things you should know if you are dedicated to earning this platinum. These are not game breaking bugs or glitches, but bits of advice that can make your journey somewhat easier as you work towards the platinum.

Pausing the game

Pressing :select: will pause the game and the timer so if you forget where to go, you can pause and look at a walkthrough. Pausing will freeze the in game timer and help you make the 3 hour time limit.

Bullet Adjustment

After beating the game once, go to the Options screen and press :r1: to enter the secret options menu. Choosing a higher number under Bullet Adjustment will give you more bullets when you pick them up.

Section 03. Walkthrough

If you're still dedicated for this platinum then steel your nerves and let's get this going. You'll be playing through the game a few times and you should use this time to get a feel for everything, understanding the puzzles and where to go next; remember if you forget something you can always pause the game and check what to do. One last thing, after you clear the game and see your ending results you can save your game; I suggest you do not overwrite a previous clear data.

Before we begin, understand that this game does not have a master file that tracks everything you've achieved. Because of this, earning the 4/4(+2) ending score or access to the Blue Gem requires vigilance on your part. To continue receiving credit for your endings, you'll need to load your results screen before you go to start a new game. Failure to do this will result in your playing through the game and not adding the ending to the total count.

Section 3.1 - First Playthrough

This will be your first time through the game, whether you're new or have played this before; use this playthrough to get used to everything. I'd recommend having the Action level on Normal and Riddle on Easy. By the end of this playthrough you'll have a handful of trophies but will still need many more. This is your initiation playthrough, you'll need to practice more to get the platinum so enjoy this one while you can.

Trophies Earned

(B) Free to Go or Second Best or Goodbye

(B) Childhood Trauma

(B) I Don't Need You Anymore

(B) Where's That Letter

(S) Keep Your Distance or Melee Master

(S) Keen Eye

(S) Say Goodbye

Section 3.2 - Born From a Wish

Go ahead and start Maria's scenario. Her journey isn't too long or have many puzzles. Once you're done with the scenario be sure to save your data after the credits.

Trophies Earned

(S) Restless Dreams

Section 3.3 - Second Playthrough

This is your second playthrough; to get practice in you should have the Action level set to Hard while Riddle is set to Normal. You should work on getting one of the other 2 regular endings here. You can also start collecting some of the special items. Be sure to save your clear data.

Trophies Earned

(B) Free to Go or Second Best or Goodbye

(S) Keep Your Distance or Melee Master

Section 3.4 - Third Playthrough

This is your third playthrough and you should focus on getting the last of the three basic endings. Set your Riddle level to Hard and play through the game again, be sure to save your clear data.

Trophies Earned

(B) Free to Go or Second Best or Goodbye

Section 3.5 - Fourth Playthrough

This will be your first of three playthroughs for the special endings. I recommend going for the Rebirth ending. Have your Riddle level set to Hard again. You'll need to acquire 4 items throughout the game and all 4 of them can be missed. When you clear the game again, be sure to save your data.

Trophies Earned

(B) Fountain of Youth

(B) Not So Lost Memories

(B) Light Reading

(S) Unholy Grail

(S) Say Your Prayers

(G) I.Q. Test

Section 3.6 - Fifth Playthrough

You're almost there, play through the game again but this time you should go for the UFO ending. This requires claiming the Blue Gem from the start of the game and using it in 3 specific locations. Be sure to save your data.

Trophies Earned

(B) We're Not Alone

(S) Never to be Heard from Again

Section 3.5 - 10 Star Playthrough

This is what it all comes down to, all your practice and everything you learned will be put to the test here. You may have earned many of these trophies before this but you will need to perform these and many other functions in this playthrough to earn the 10 Big Stars. You will also be going for the Dog ending this playthrough. If you make it to the end and have performed all required actions for the 10 Big Stars, congratulations on reaching the end of the line.

Trophies Earned

(S) Overkill

(S) Hard to Hit

(S) Don't Keep Her Waiting

(S) It All Makes Sense Now

(G) Warp Speed

(G) Playing on the Edge

(G) Man's Best Friend

Section 3.6 - Last Things Last

You're not quite done, but this will be the most rewarding part. Start the game one more time. Now make your way to the camper on Saul street. Once inside pick up the Green Hyper Spray... Congratulations!

Unlock the "Dog" ending.

(Missable) This is one of six possible endings and one of three of the special endings in the game. To earn this trophy you will need to collect the Dog Key during the main game and use it to unlock the Observation Room on the third floor in the Alternate Lakeview Hotel.

[spoiler=dog]To get the Dog Key you must first earn the three regular endings; Leave, In Water, and Maria; or you can earn the Rebirth ending. Now start a new game and when you head to Rosewater Park, search the east side of the park for a doghouse and search it to find the key.

This is the preferred ending to go for when attempting a Big 10 Stars run as it ends the game without sending you through the last two boss fights.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1058/531.jpgNever to be Heard from Again (S)

Unlock the "UFO" ending.

(Missable) This is one of six possible endings and one of three of the special endings in the game. To earn this trophy you will need to collect the Blue Gem and use it in three specific locations through the game.

[spoiler=ufo]To get the Blue Gem you must clear the game at least once and clear Maria's scenario. It is found in the bathroom James begins the game in.

The first location is the Garden in Brookhaven Hospital; this is the area you wake up in after defeating the Flesh Lips.

The second area is on the docks, in front of the rowboat after defeating Eddy.

The third and final location is in Room 312 in Lakeview Hotel before you watch the video.

Once you use the blue gem the final time, a scene will start and you will be at the end of the game.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1058/FD9.jpgUnholy Grail (S)

Acquire the Obsidian Gauntlet

(Missable) This item is the third of four that is required to earn the Rebirth ending. After clearing the game at least once, search the broken display case in the Historical Society room that has the very long staircase. This is one of the requirements to earn Who Needs a Gun?.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1058/680.jpgRestless Dreams (S)

Unlock the "Born from a Wish" ending.

This trophy is really simple to earn. When selecting New Game from the main menu you can select the main game or Maria's scenario. Choose the latter and clear the scenario to earn this trophy. Be sure to save your clear data so you'll be able to access the Blue Gem.

This trophy requires you to clear the game at least once. Once you start a new game, start running towards the town. Pass through the graveyard and when you near the town you should hear the chainsaw. To your right will be a pile of logs and the chainsaw will be stuck in them. Approach the chainsaw and press :cross: to acquire the chainsaw and this trophy. This is one of the requirements to earn Who Needs a Gun?.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1058/5DF.jpgKeep Your Distance (S)

Defeat at least 75 enemies by shooting in SH2.

This trophy requires you to kill at least 75 enemies by shooting, this does include bosses. You only get three shooting weapons in the entire game and must deliver the fatal blow by shooting. If you knock an enemy down but finish them off by kicking you will not receive credit for a shooting kill. You acquire the Pistol as part of the story, the Shotgun in Brookhaven Hospital, and the Hunting Rifle in Toluca Prison. This is one of the requirements to earn Who Needs a Gun?.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1058/724.jpgMelee Master (S)

Defeat at least 75 enemies by fighting in SH2.

This trophy requires you to kill at least 75 enemies with melee weapons, this does include bosses. You get three standard melee weapons in the game and must deliver the fatal blow by attacking or kicking them while they're down. You acquire the Wooden Plank as part of the story, the Steel Pipe at the Texxon Gas Station, and the Giant Knife in The Labyrinth. This is one of the requirements to earn Who Needs a Gun?.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1058/FF5.jpgKeen Eye (S)

Find at least 150 items + extra items in SH2.

(Missable) This trophy is misworded a little. You do need to find 150 items, but do not need to collect any of the extra items to earn this trophy. Please go over the walkthrough and maps linked in the Roadmap for the numerous places to find items. However, earning 150 items + all 8 extra items is one of the requirements to earn Who Needs a Gun?.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1058/115.jpgDon't Keep Her Waiting (S)

Complete Boat Stage in less than 1 min 20 seconds.

(Missable) This trophy is one of the most frustrating trophies in the game. After defeating Eddy you'll be on a dock with a rowboat. To earn this trophy you need to reach the dock at the Lakeview Hotel within 80 seconds. To reach the Hotel you'll need to follow a bright light through the fog and row towards it. The light starts out to your right and once you line the boat up just row forward and don't stop until you're on the other side.

The controls for the boat are more complex on Hard than they are on Easy/Normal. On Easy/Normal you just need to press the :ls: in the direction you want to row; :lsleft: turns left, :lsright: turns right, and  rows forward. On Hard the left oar is manipulated by rotating the :ls: counter-clockwise and the right oar is manipulated by rotating the :rs: clockwise. This is one of the requirements to earn Who Needs a Gun?.

When going for this trophy you can hold :square: to have James row faster. This can be frustrating with only 2 hands. Go into the Special Options screen and turn Invert Movement on; this will have James run and row faster without holding :square:.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1058/A59.jpgHard to Hit (S)

Receive less than 500 points of damage in one game, in SH2.

(Missable) This trophy can be one of the most frustrating trophies in the game. You need to make it from the beginning of the game, all the way through to any ending while taking less than 500 points of damage. 100 points of life is equal to the damage it would take to kill James if he was at perfect health. The damage you take when Pyramid Head knocks you off the Hospital Roof does not count for this. You can estimate how much damage you've taken by going into your inventory and looking at the screen in the upper left. This is one of the requirements to earn Who Needs a Gun?.

Green Tint = Fine.

No tint = Not bad.

Red Tint = Near Death.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1058/00A.jpgI.Q. Test (G)

Complete SH2 on Extra Riddle difficulty.

When you go to start a new game you may notice there is no Extra difficulty for riddles. To unlock the Extra difficulty you'll need to beat the game 3 times, each time on a different riddle difficulty. Once that is done you need to start a new game and put the riddle difficulty on Hard. Even though it doesn't say it on the menu you will be in Extra difficulty, now beat the game again to earn this trophy. You can confirm it by looking at your save file, which displays the difficulty for Action and Riddles. If you are having a hard time solving a particular riddle, please check the links section in the Roadmap.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1058/B53.jpgMan's Best Friend (G)

Acquire the Dog Key.

(Missable) To first be able to acquire the Dog Key you will need to clear the game with all 3 regular endings; Leave, In Water, Maria; or clear the game with the Rebirth ending. Once that is done, start a new game and when you make it to Rosewater Park you can find the Dog Key in a doghouse on the east side of the park. This is one of the requirements to earn Who Needs a Gun?

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1058/C23.jpgWarp Speed (G)

Complete SH2 in 3 hours or less.

(Missable) This is not as hard as it sounds since you're able to pause the game and the in game timer by pressing :select:. The best advice is run don't walk and skip every cutscene no matter how short. With that in mind, make it from the start of the game to your results screen (you can also skip the credits) within 3 hours for this trophy. This is one of the requirements to earn Who Needs a Gun?.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1058/F1C.jpgPlaying on the Edge (G)

Complete SH2 with 2 saves or less.

(Missable) This trophy is misworded a bit. It's not that you can't save, you simply cannot interact with the red squares more than twice. Even if you don't save your game, the game records you interacting with the save point, so be careful when searching for items that may be near a save point. If you are not good about not taking damage this could be difficult. This is one of the requirements to earn Who Needs a Gun?.

[spoiler=saves]When attempting to play for 10 Big Stars there are two highly recommended places to save. In the Alternate Hospital, before you go down to the basement and get chased by Pyramid Head; people save here because on Hard difficulty, Maria gets killed very easily and this can end your game.

http://i.imgur.com/sXZUIB7.jpg

The other best place is in The Labyrinth before the Eddy fight. It's good to save here as Eddy is the most dangerous enemy in the game and can easily push you over the 500 point damage cap. This is also right before the rowboat and so you can also re-attempt the boat if you cannot cross the lake fast enough.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1058/DBF.jpgWho Needs a Gun? (G)

Acquire the Green Hyper Spray

(Missable) This is by far the most challenging trophy in the game and earning it will require you to perform most of the other trophies actions within a single playthrough. The Hyper Spray is found in the camper on Saul Street and actually changes color based on your most recent game clear results. To have it turn Green you will need to clear the game with a 10 Big Star result. The Hyper Spray is also one of the items you will need to collect to earn the proper rating. Once you've done that, save your data, start a new game and acquire the Hyper Spray from the Camper on Saul Street in South Vale: East.

[spoiler=10big]To earn a 10 Big Star rating you will have to perform multiple actions in the game, many of which aren't so bad by themselves but can be difficult while attempting everything else. To get the rating you will need to;

  1. Beat the game on Action Level Hard.
  2. Beat the game on Riddle Level Hard.
  3. Have cleared the game with every ending. You can be on your final ending while attempting this. Your ending result should read 4/4(+2)
  4. Beat the game while saving no more than 2 times. (Playing on the Edge)
  5. Beat the game in under 3 hours. (Warp Speed)
  6. Beat the game while collecting 150 items and all 8 special items.The Special Items are;
    • Blue Gem (We Are Not Alone)
      Chainsaw (Overkill)
      Hyper Spray
      White Chrism (Fountain of Youth)
      Dog Key (Man's Best Friend)
Book of Lost Memories (Not so Lost Memories)
      Obsidian Goblet (Unholy Grail)
Book of Crimson Ceremony (Light Reading)

[*]Beat the game and defeat 75 enemies by shooting. (Keep Your Distance)

[*]Beat the game and defeat 75 enemies by fighting. (Melee Master)

[*]Beat the game while clearing the Boat Stage in under 80 seconds. (Don't Keep Her Waiting)

[*]Beat the game while taking less than 500 damage points. (Hard to Hit)

[*]Do not use either special weapon; Chainsaw or Hyper Spray.

Every graded statistic should be displayed in yellow to show you've earned maximum points in that area. Below is what your result screen should look like.

Credit to conkervertex for this image.

Unless you missed out on one of the particular trophies earlier, there is no way to keep track of your statistics as you play through the game. You will have to use your own way to keep track of your kills, your time for crossing the lake and how much damage you've taken. This is no small order but if you can pull this off, you will have definitely earned the platinum.

There are two threads on the site dedicated to assisting people earn the 10 Big Star Rank.

Firstly, it's a minimum of six playthroughs (the save file keeps a log of completions).

Secondly, it's nowhere near 50+ hours when an average run takes less than three.

Thirdly, and I believe this calls for a mod, you cannot post incomplete trophy guides.

I've managed to get the Rebirth and Leave ending by making a strategic save and am assuming the same can be done with the UFO ending.

I'm being liberal with the time limit because not everyone is going to rush and even if they do, you can make a small screw up and set yourself back multiple times.

Thirdly I'm still inputting the material so please be patient.

My apologies. I assumed it was pre-typed; one hour had passed.

I'm pretty sure, however, that the save file only saves upon completion. For instance, I was able to get both the In Water and Leave endings through one playthrough from the last save, but they didn't compile into my ending-clear number (stopping the ten-star rank). Then again, that's the PS2 version, and being a New Zealander I'm yet to get the HD Collection.

I'm sure that this is correct. You MUST complete six separate playthroughs (in addition to the 15 minute Maria Expedition). Two of the six are slightly abbreviated (Dog and UFO endings cut approximately 10 minutes off of the duration of a playthrough).

However, since only your final playthrough (preferably the Dog Ending) need be played on Hard Mode, you can complete your first 5 playthroughs in approximately 1.5-2 hours each (unless you want to practice for your 10-Star Run). Of course, this requires familiarity with the maps and goals, so only veterans might pull off the platinum in, say, 10 hours. New players (or casual players from PS2 days) will probably require 20-30 hours to complete the platinum (not counting failed attempts at the 10-Star Run, of course; these are 1-2 hours of wasted time each). Even so, 50 hours is truly an extreme estimate; each of your five casual runs get easier with each successive playthrough, so don't estimate 8 hours per run.

20 hours is way too low. I mean on your first playthrough of this game, even if you are using a guide and watching all the cut scenes. It will take you at least 5 hours. And that isn't to say in the meantime you will take your time and look for things. 30 to 50 sounds about right to me. First time players may probably take about 10 hours on their first play through and the HARD puzzles really are difficult without a guide. That's not to say you aren't going to fail to get an ending or the the 10 star rank a few times.

20 hours I think is going to be pretty tough.

20 hours is way too low. I mean on your first playthrough of this game, even if you are using a guide and watching all the cut scenes. It will take you at least 5 hours. And that isn't to say in the meantime you will take your time and look for things. 30 to 50 sounds about right to me. 30 yes, 50 definitely not.

Sorry for the delay, real life grabbed me and kept me busy and I couldn't do any of the major editing from my phone. I'm back and fixed the problem with the two images not showing up and the spoiler tag issue under the one ending. I would like to link a 10 Star playthrough, but the video you linked starts off at a random place, so it misses the Blue Gem and Chainsaw.

thanks for the guide, good job. so does anyone have the secret to doing the boat run in under 1.20 yet? I cant get anywhere near it.

if you hold square, he'll more quicker, justy like with running. With that said, having movement inverted on hard would dramatically help get you moving and across the lake. I think my time was 1 07 when I did it. Remember, by inverting movement, you'll auto run.

Exactly, there's this trick on the official guide too.

Sorry it's in french but I translate for you

(I hope my translation is correct enough):

http://www.ps3trophies.org/forum/members/dedeurm-albums-sh2-picture26635-boat.jpg

"Sailing advice: when you are on the boat, you can row twice faster by olding :square: button.

You will have to find some additional arms in the hard mode to help you.

The boat max speed is 3.5 meters/second, and you can reach 4 meters/second in hard mode."

So, as beckonthemoon88 said, invert walk/run in the option is a good advice.

Cheers.

Wanna give a tip I don't think it's been given(haven't seen it in guides or videos)

When you fight Pyramid Head the first time, using ammo seems pretty pointless(unless it slows him down)

You can also get Pyramid Head stuck and just stand around, figured this out on accident when I was a kid.

Just run straight, stand in the staircase till he gets close, then when he's right in front of it, run forward and stand in the corner by the dead Spitter, most times Pyramid Head tends to get stuck, and he will stay stuck if you stay in the corner.

It's not very risky either, Pyramid Head hasn't hit me during my attempts of getting him stuck, and only one time he didn't actually get stuck(on Easy, which he seems to move really slowly, so I think that may be why)
