Sam & Max: Beyond Time and Space- Episode 4 ~ Road Map, Trophy Guide, and Walkthrough

This guide is intended for use on PS3Trophies.org only. You may not copy this guide and post it elsewhere, regardless of if you try to pass it off as your own work or give me credit. Changing the wording slightly to try to pass it off as your own work is also forbidden.

If you still have any questions to ask about this game and its trophies, or just want to say thanks, feel free to create an account and say hi. I'd be happy to answer any questions you have, and there are plenty of other great guides for other games written by others who will be happy to help you get your trophies.

- Online: 0

- Approximate amount of time to 100%: 1-10 hours

- Does difficulty affect trophies?: N/A

- Do cheat codes disable trophies?: N/A

Introduction: Chariots of the Dogs is your standard point-and-click adventure game: you'll explore various locations looking for clues and items, talk to various people, and solve puzzles to advance in the game. And as a Sam & Max title, it's full of all the great humor, interesting characters, and crazy plot twists you would expect from the franchise.

The 2/10 difficulty rating is due to this episode not having a Pimp Le Car driving challenge like the last three episodes did. Thus, your only concerns will be getting through the story and obtaining the missable trophies. Neither of those tasks pose any significant challenge.

The three missable trophies are AI Interrogator, The Willard Libby Trophy, and Intelligence Crisis. As you progress through the game, events will take place that can change things in the game world and make these trophies no longer possible to get in your current playthrough. Check the guide for information about when you can first get them and when your chance to get them has been lost.

Step 1: Simply play the game. Reaching the end of the game will net you 9/12 trophies just for story completion, and if you manage to get all of the missable trophies as well, you can complete the entire game in this playthrough. Refer to the guide if you get stuck, or just use the walkthrough from the start of the game to finish it in the most efficient way possible.

Step 2: If you missed AI Interrogator, The Willard Libby Trophy, and/or Intelligence Crisis in your first playthrough, start a new game to mop up.

01.jpg A Land Few Dare To Enter (B)

Gain access to Bosco's secret room.

At the start of the game, you'll be in Bosco's store looking for him. Hop behind his counter and take the toy moai head on the floor. Hop back over the counter and place the moai head into the x-ray machine in the back of the store. Use the x-ray you receive with the x-ray viewer above Bosco's counter to get the code for the laser grid. Hop behind the counter again and use the keypad to enter the code. Go back over the counter one last time and enter the bathroom. The trophy unlocks once you're inside.

02.jpg No More Boscow (S)

Get Bosco back to his normal paranoid human self.

Spoiler

The first thing you have to do is finish looking for Bosco. The A Land Few Dare To Enter trophy left you in Bosco's bathroom. Open the stall door there, and take the wine bottle inside. Sam will comment that it's been left open too long and that it's now vinegar, and it will be marked in your inventory as such. Use the big gun to shoot a hole into the industrial-sized baking soda can, and pour the vinegar into the can. As the writing on the walls suggests, the explosion from this causes T-H-E-M to appear and abduct you. Aboard their ship, you will find Bosco. Or rather, Boscow.

You cannot help Bosco from here, so go to the elevator and use Bosco's time card. You'll find yourself in a 1960's version of Bosco's Inconvenience run by Bosco's mom. Talk to her and you'll learn that a vandal was in the store recently and bumped into her baby-maker, ruining the father's sample she had picked out by spilling milk into it (hence, Boscow). Trying to end the conversation will result in her become infatuated for Max and starting the temporal anomaly you have to fix for the Temporal Anomaly Corrected trophy. Don't worry about that for now and end the conversation again. Pick up the modified carbon dater from the floor in front of the gun case, and take the chemical sampler on the counter right next to the baby maker. Use the carbon dater with Max and Momma Bosco to get Stinky's time card and the Oval Office time card, respectively (if you didn't talk to Momma Bosco yet, using the carbon dater on her will force you into a conversation with her). Use the cards with the elevator, and then try to use the elevator. You'll be forced to go back to the spaceship to look at the temporal anomaly you created.

The only thing you can do here is to use the carbon dater with Boscow to avoid missing The Willard Libby Trophy. After you do that, go back to the elevator and use Stinky's time card. You'll find yourself in a 1980's version of Stinky's Diner where Grandpa Stinky is still in charge. Take the screwdriver on the floor all the way in the back next to the Jukebox, and use it with the nearby letter display to steal the letter inside. Now return to the elevator and use the Oval Office time card.

You'll find yourself in the Oval Office of the White House during the 1960's. Superball is here guarding the War Room door. Show the President's letter that you just stole from Stinky's to him. He'll unceremoniously toss the envelope aside and read the letter, and then the game will make a big scene of Superball spitting on a pillow. Ignore Superball's spit and use the chemical sampler with the envelope, which has landed on the President's desk, to get a sample of the President's DNA. Return to the elevator and use Bosco's time card once again. Swap out the open sample on the baby maker with the President's sample. Shortly after the AI announces that the time stream has been altered, the trophy will unlock.

Returning to T-H-E-M's spaceship by using the home button on the elevator will allow you to go visit with the now normal human Bosco. If you've already unlocked Temporal Anomaly Corrected as well, you'll advance to the next part of the game when you do this. If not, you still have more work to do to save Bosco.

03.jpg You'll Need This (B)

Provide an inventory item for use in Episode 5.

This trophy is story related and cannot be missed. You'll unlock it while working towards Of Death and Eggs, so see that trophy for more details. You can unlock this sooner if you find the location and item that triggers it early, though. It unlocks after a brief cutscene where Sam trades one of his items away for a different item.

04.jpg Temporal Anomaly Corrected (S)

Fix Bosco's temporal anomaly problem.

Spoiler

You will have triggered the temporal anomaly while going about the events required for the No More Boscow trophy. Be sure you've taken the chemical sampler on the counter next to Momma Bosco's baby maker if you don't have it yet. When trying to use the elevator after causing the anomaly, the elevator will automatically return you to T-H-E-M's spaceship to show you how you've compounded Boscow's troubles. You cannot do anything to help him with either problem from the spaceship, though. The only thing you can do here is to use the carbon dater with Boscow to avoid missing The Willard Libby Trophy.

After you do that, go back to the elevator and use the Intergalactic Freelance Police time card. You'll find yourself in a futuristic version of Sam & Max's office. Examine the poster on the bulletin board to learn about Stinky's adhesive made with Bitumen-13. Now head back to the elevator and use Stinky's time card. You'll find yourself in a 1980's version of Stinky's Diner where Grandpa Stinky is still in charge. Use the chemical sampler to take a sample of the tar cake that's sitting on Stinky's counter, next to the cash register. Return to the elevator again and use the Oval Office time card.

You'll find yourself in the Oval Office of the White House during the 1960's. Superball is here guarding the War Room door. Show him your tar cake sample to apply for a patent. Superball will ask what ingredient makes it unique, and the answer is of course Bitumen-13. Giving this answer will cause Superball to grant you a patent for the tar cake. Head back to the elevator and use it to go back to Stinky's diner. Show Grandpa Stinky your brand new patent and he'll throw his tar cake away, causing the time stream to be altered and the portable AI to fall off the elevator.

The next thing you must do is convince Little Sam & Little Max to stop messing around with Bluster Blaster and go to their prom. To do this, you'll need to return to T-H-E-M's spaceship using the home button on the elevator. Talk to the Central Device and choose "50 System Settings." Change it's personality to abusive, and then use the elevator to return to Stinky's Diner. Give the portable AI to Little Sam, and he'll upload the AI into Bluster Blaster. The abusive AI will cause the game to start insulting Little Max, who will then get sick of playing and drag Little Sam off to the prom. However, doing this can cause you to miss all three of the game's missable trophies in one shot, so be careful! First, ensure that you have already used the carbon dater with Little Sam and Little Max to avoid missing The Willard Libby Trophy as after this, Little Sam and Little Max will leave and not be seen again. Second, make sure you have already unlocked the AI Interrogator trophy, because after Little Sam uploads the abusive AI into Bluster Blaster, you will be unable to change the AI's personality. Finally, be sure you give the other three AI personalities to Little Sam for him to upload first before you give him the abusive AI to get the Intelligence Crisis trophy, because as mentioned above, you will not be able to change the AI personality and Little Sam will no longer be there to upload a new one even if you could.

Once you have avoided missing any trophies and had Little Sam upload the aggressive AI into Bluster Blaster, present day Max will suddenly have a new love of the ladies. Use the elevator to go back to Bosco's, and Max will automatically start hitting on Momma Bosco. This will turn her off and correct the temporal anomaly. The trophy will unlock shortly after the AI informs you of this.

Returning to T-H-E-M's spaceship by using the home button on the elevator will allow you to go visit with the now time-stable Bosco. If you've already unlocked No More Boscow as well, you'll advance to the next part of the game when you do this. If not, you still have more work to do to save Bosco.

05.jpg Recording Artist (B)

Get a recording contract for the youngest Pedro.

You'll need to have unlocked both No More Boscow and Temporal Anomaly Corrected and returned to T-H-E-M's spaceship to advance the game to this part of the story. Also, be sure to use the carbon dater with "Captain Mariachi" before proceeding to avoid missing The Willard Libby Trophy.

Spoiler

Returning to the room where you first entered T-H-E-M's spaceship and found Boscow will cause you to witness a scene where the Captain Mariachi is planning to play for the Soda Poppers at the Embarrassing Idol competition that took place during Episode 2 of Sam and Max Save the World, an earlier game. The computer will print out an Embarrassing Idol time card for use with the elevator. Take it after the cutscene ends and put it with the rest of the time cards on the elevator, and then use it to travel back in time to the competition. After viewing a familiar scene, you'll find yourself in conversation with your past selves. Honesty is the way to advance here: tell them you came for the recording contract, and after they refuse to give it to you, try to leave.

After a rather unfortunate scene, you'll find yourself back on T-H-E-M's spaceship. Talk to Past Sam, and he'll ask how to get to the moon. He still has the recording contract you need, and a little payback never hurts either. Tell him that he needs a time traveling phonebooth, and that Agent Superball in the future has one. Past Sam & Max will head off to talk to Superball, and come back with their memories erased. Talk to Past Sam again. He's still trying to get to the moon, and he still has the recording contract, but he's forgotten why he wanted to hang onto it now. Tell him that he needs a screwdriver, and that you have one. After some convincing, he'll trade you the recording contract for it. Give the contract to the youngest Pedro in the captain's chair. He'll leave to pursue his new music career, and the trophy will unlock.

06.jpg Indefinite Birthday (B)

Get rid of the middle-aged Pedro from his communications post.

You'll need to have unlocked both No More Boscow and Temporal Anomaly Corrected and returned to T-H-E-M's spaceship to advance the game to this part of the story. Also, be sure to use the carbon dater with "Listening Mariachi" before proceeding to avoid missing The Willard Libby Trophy.

Spoiler

The middle-aged Pedro is in the room where you first found Boscow. Talking to him reveals that he's listening for people to mention that it's their birthday so he can go play for them. With this information in hand, go to the elevator and use the Oval Office time card. Once there, go to the giant calendar next to the President's desk. You can move the yellow "TODAY!" sticky note to change the date. Pick it up and place it on Friday, September 6th. Now speak with Superball and ask him if it's his birthday. He'll look at the calendar, and if the "TODAY!" note is on the 6th, he'll say that it's his birthday. This will trigger the middle-aged Pedro to appear to play a song for Superball. Return to the elevator while he is still playing to make Sam and Max leave without him, causing him to be stranded in 1963. The trophy will unlock once you're back at T-H-E-M's spaceship. If you let Pedro finish his song, he'll get back in the elevator and make you go with him back to the ship. Just go back and ask Superball what day it is again to make middle-aged Pedro come back to sing again.

07.jpg Of Death and Eggs (B)

Answer and prove the two questions the older Pedro has.

You'll need to have unlocked both No More Boscow and Temporal Anomaly Corrected and returned to T-H-E-M's spaceship to advance the game to this part of the story. Also, be sure to use the carbon dater with "Old Mariachi" before proceeding to avoid missing The Willard Libby Trophy.

Spoiler

Talking to the Old Mariachi will reveal that he won't quit his soul crushing/time traveling duties until he finds out how he will die and whether or not the chicken or the egg came first. Head back to the time traveling elevator and use Bosco's time card to go back to Momma Bosco's. Go to the bathroom and you should find the same rack of toilet wine in the stall that you visited at the start of this episode. Go to that same wine bottle and Sam will take the cork out. Leave the bathroom and use the Oval Office time card at the elevator to pay Superball another visit. Use the carbon dater on him to get a time card for Sam & Max's office. Use that time card to go there now.

You'll find yourself in a present day version of Sam & Max's office this time. The first order of business is to pick up the Boxing Betty Remote on Max's desk. This will trigger a cutscene where a future version of Sam out on the street will ask present Sam for the remote, and in return, you'll receive an egg. This will unlock the You'll Need This trophy. With that done, go to the model volcano on the floor under the bulletin board and use the cork you took from the wine bottle to plug it. Now return to the elevator and use the Intergalactic Freelance Police time card.

In Sam & Max's future office, you'll now notice that the papers on the bulletin board are no longer ruined from one of the volcano's explosions due to it being corked. Go to the bulletin board and take the obituary from it to learn that Pedro dies due to complications from inhaling ink ribbon fumes. Return to T-H-E-M's spaceship via the elevator's home button, and show this obituary to old Pedro. News of how he died will cause him to become annoyed with the printer, and he will no longer care if you mess with it. So, of course, you should mess with it. Interacting with it once will cause the covers to pop off, exposing the ink ribbon. Interacting with it a second time will cause Sam to throw out its ink ribbon (if you hadn't shown Pedro the obituary, he would prevent you from tossing the ribbon).

With the ink ribbon removed from the printer, return to the Central Device and ask it to print you a time card (if you haven't taken the Embarrassing Idol time card yet, Sam will take that first and you'll have to ask the computer to print a second time). Due to the lack of ink, the time card will be blank. Use this blank time card with the elevator. The elevator will take you to a time before the universe as we know it even existed. Mr. Featherly is also there. Scan him with the carbon dater first to avoid missing The Willard Libby Trophy, and then use your egg with Mr. Featherly to swap the two. Return to old Pedro and show him Mr. Featherly. All his questions will now be answered, and the trophy will unlock.

08.jpg No More Birthdays (S)

Get rid of all three Pedros from the ship.

This trophy unlocks automatically after you have unlocked Recording Artist, Indefinite Birthday, and Of Death and Eggs.

09.jpg Chariots of the Dogs (G)

Complete Episode 4 - Chariots of the Dogs.

Spoiler

After unlocking No More Birthdays, return to the soul crushing room. In his excitement over having complete control over the ship, Max will jump on the control panel and accidentally step on the "suck" button, causing Bosco's soul to be sucked away. Whoops! Now you have to find a way to reach the portal yourself so you can go after it. Walk towards the screen and then head right to find the bridge control button. With the Pedros gone, you can now extend the bridge. However, first be sure you have unlocked The Willard Libby Trophy, because proceeding with the story at this point will cause you to be stranded on the spaceship, denying you access to all remaining characters you need to scan except for Sam and Max. Once you're ready to proceed, push the bridge button.

Bosco's corpse will be dumped into the soul crushing area by the bridge. Go back to the first control panel that had the "suck" button Max accidentally pushed on it. Push the suck button yourself. Bosco's corpse will start to get sucked into the portal, but will stop about halfway up. Quickly use the tar cake sample you took earlier in the episode with the time controls directly to the right of the suck button to freeze time. If you're too slow, the portal will stop sucking and drop Bosco's corpse. If that happens, just push the suck button again. When you do it properly, time will stop with Bosco's corpse suspended in midair. Now you must be quick again; this time go to Bosco's corpse and use it. If you're too slow, time will resume, and shortly after Bosco's corpse will fall. Simply repeat the process of pushing the suck button and then stopping time with the tar cake if needed. When done correctly, Sam and Max will use Bosco's corpse as a stepping stone to reach the portal, and the trophy will unlock.

10.jpg AI Interrogator (B)

Choose every dialog choice with each AI personality.

MISSABLE! The thing you'll be talking to is called "Central Device" and is found on T-H-E-M's spaceship in the same room where you find Boscow. See A Land Few Dare To Enter and No More Boscow for details on how to get there. Once you talk to the Central Device, you'll be presented with 7 dialog options:

  • 10 System Identification
  • 20 Owner Identification
  • 30 Obvious Query
  • 40 Elevator Usage
  • 50 System Settings
  • 60 Print Time Card
  • 70 Terminate

The 5 options you need to concern yourself with are 10, 20, 30, 40, and 50. 10 through 40 are the only four dialog options that change based on the selected personality, and 50 System Settings allows you to change the AI personality between four options: Politically correct, suggestive, abusive, and passive-aggressive. Simply run through options 10, 20, 30, and 40 with one personality, then select a new personality and repeat. After you've chosen 10 through 40 with each personality, the trophy will unlock.

You will lose your chance at this trophy once you have Little Sam upload the abusive personality into Bluster Blaster. After doing that, the "50 System Settings" dialog choice disappears when talking to the Central Device, which means the personality is stuck on abusive for the rest of the game.

11.jpg The Willard Libby Trophy (B)

Use the Carbon Dater on every possible character.

MISSABLE! The Carbon Dater is found on the floor of Momma Bosco's store, which you can reach by using Bosco's time card at the elevator. See A Land Few Dare To Enter and No More Boscow for details on how to get there. Once you have, it there are 15 characters you need to scan. Below is a list of all characters needed, where you can locate them, and when you lose your chance to scan them. Big thanks to p78ch201 for helping confirm and eliminate possible characters.

Everywhere

  • Sam: The player character. Thus, can be found everywhere. You can miss Sam if you don't scan him before you finish the game, but as he's always there, this shouldn't be a problem.
  • Max: Sam's best friend and partner, he follows Sam everywhere. Thus, like Sam, he can be found everywhere. And like Sam, he can be missed if you finish the game without scanning him, but he's always by your side.

1960's Bosco's Inconvenience - Use "Bosco's Time Card" at the elevator

  • Momma Bosco: Found behind the counter of her store. Cannot be missed, as she provides the Oval Office Time Card needed to advance the story.

T-H-E-M's Spaceship, Main Room - Use the "Home Button" at the elevator, or use the exit door if in the soul crushing room

  • Boscow/Bosco: Found standing in front of the speaker. The form he takes depends on what you have done with the Baby Maker at the 1960's version of Bosco's Inconvenience. By default, he's a cow, but he can also take one of two possible human forms. You only need to scan one of three three forms to get credit for the trophy. If you unlock both the No More Boscow and Temporal Anomaly Corrected trophies without scanning him, your chance to do so is lost.
  • Captain Mariachi: Found sitting in the captain's chair later on in the story. If you unlock Recording Artist without scanning him, your chance to do so is lost.
  • Listening Mariachi: Found standing by the speaker later on in the story. If you unlock Indefinite Birthday without scanning him, your chance to do so is lost.

T-H-E-M's Spaceship, Soul Crushing Room - Use the exit door in the main room of the spaceship

  • Old Mariachi: Found near the exit door, in front of a control panel. If you unlock Of Death and Eggs without scanning him, your chance to do so is lost.

1980's Stinky's Diner - Use "Stinky's Time Card", found by scanning any version of Max, at the elevator

  • Grandpa Stinky: Behind the counter. If you press the Bridge Button after unlocking No More Birthdays without scanning him, your chance to do so is lost.
  • Little Sam: At the side of Bluster Blaster, tinkering with its insides. If you give him the Portable AI set to an abusive personality without scanning him, your chance to do so is lost.
  • Little Max: Playing with Bluster Blaster. If you give Little Sam the Portable AI set to an abusive personality without scanning him, your chance to do so is lost.

1960's Oval Office - Use "Oval Office Time Card", found by scanning Momma Bosco, at the elevator

  • Superball: Standing in front of the door to the War Room. Cannot be missed, as he provides the Office Time Card needed to advance the story.

2008 Sam & Max's Office - Use "Office Time Card", found by scanning Superball, at the elevator

  • Superball (again): Found guarding the door to Sam & Max's closet. If you press the Bridge Button after unlocking No More Birthdays without scanning him, your chance to do so is lost.

8100's Sam & Max's Office - Use "Intergalactic Freelance Police Time Card', found by scanning any version of Sam, at the elevator

  • Future Sam: Found by the window, sitting in a futuristic wheelchair. If you press the Bridge Button after unlocking No More Birthdays without scanning him, your chance to do so is lost.
  • Future Max: Found floating over Sam's desk on a hoverboard. If you press the Bridge Button after unlocking No More Birthdays without scanning him, your chance to do so is lost.

Beginning of the Universe - Use the blank time card at the elevator. See Of Death and Eggs for details.

  • Mr. Featherly: Found standing at the right side of the screen. If you swap him with an egg without scanning him, your chance to do so is lost.

12.jpg Intelligence Crisis (B)

Use each of the wrong personalities of AI in Bluster Blaster.

MISSABLE! To do this, you'll first need to cause the Portable AI on the elevator to fall off. See Temporal Anomaly Corrected for details on how to do that. Once you have the Portable AI, you can give it to Little Sam in Stinky's Diner and he will upload whatever AI personality you selected back at the Central Device on T-H-E-M's spaceship. As with AI Interrogator, the four AI personalities are politically correct, suggestive, abusive, and passive-aggressive. The trick here is to make sure you give Little Sam the abusive personality last, because the abusive personality will advance the story and make this trophy unavailable if you didn't give him the other three personalities first. Changing the AI personality requires a trip back to T-H-E-M's spaceship to talk to the Central Device, so you'll have to do a lot of back and forth for this one. The trophy will unlock once you give Little Sam the abusive personality, assuming of course you gave him the other three personalities prior to that.

Also, be sure you used the carbon dater with Little Sam and Little Max before giving Little Sam the abusive personality to avoid missing The Willard Libby Trophy.

It's late, and I can't force myself to keep playing the episode yet AGAIN after all that Willard Libby testing I did today anymore. I'll finish the rest of the guide tomorrow. I'm not sure anyone really cares about the guide though, because the walkthrough is already done.

Awww it didn't give me The Willard Libby Trophy :( Did I do something wrong :(

I hope so. I spent 4-5 hours straight playing this episode yesterday to narrow down which characters actually count. If after that, I still screwed up, I'm going to go insane. So yeah, I hope you did something wrong and not me. :p

You crazy, fool!

lol, but then again I spend MAX 10 min per mini game, I think I spend like 5 min on the one in ep 3:P might have been lucky and didn't get anoyed by it. lot's of ppl are having trouble with it, but I really don't see the problem, mjc, you described what and where to look for, so it's just about reflexes really...

really? yeah I had to wait for that the longest too, but it couldn't be much more then 10 min. I must've got really lucky:P (while I normaly NEVER get lucky in video gamesXD). ow well if they would fix the rate those random things spawn and make a couple of more challenges per episode I'd love to see this kind of mini game back in season 4:) (I sure hope they're working on a S4, but seeing how populair the series is, they gotta be:P)

They better be! Since they've been busy with Jurassic Park (which releases today) and the Walking Dead we might get a Season 4 on december 2012... or maybe a Season 2 for Back to the Future before that?
