Colosseum Guide

The Coliseum can be unlocked through one of Jocelyn's quest, more precisely one that unlocks after you get your friendship level with her up to level 2. You must sleep before the quest will appear on the quest board. If it doesn't appear, then you need to do some of the other quests to make room for it. Don't do the ones on the bottom, do the quests on top of the list. Jocelyn is only on the island on Thursday, Holidays and Festival days. To get Jocelyn's friends level up, give her a Strange Pot every day you see her (you create one using carpentry). She also has a quest that will appear repeatedly on the quest board where she asks for a Pot, which is easy to solve by giving her another Strange Pot. Also talking to every day you see her levels her up too.

The Coliseum can be located a bit north of the Flame Spirit Shrine, but it should be easy to find when you finally can find it through Jocelyn's quest.

In the Coliseum you will need to fight against 9 "waves" of enemies. The first 3 are normal enemies. The 4th one is a boss you've never seen. The 5th to 8th is the Spirit Shrine bosses. The very last one is a miniature version of the legendary golem. You can't fight the bosses you have not already fought in the main story yet, so with other words, you can't finish all the enemies before you've beaten the game. All the enemies are much stronger than usual.

There is a trophy for beating all of the 9 "waves" of enemies once and twice. The first round shouldn't be a problem after finishing the main storyline, but the second round can give you some headache, especially the latter bosses and perhaps mostly the last boss.

Recommended equipment:

  • Legendary Staff (*)
  • Whale Hat (*)
  • Super Wooly Scarf (*)
  • Super Wooly Belt (*)
  • Art of Magic (*)
  • Fleet Foot

You should also have got your staff skill level to above 6 or 7 (can't remember), this is so you can use the Powerful Magic attack (:triangle:). Fleet Foot let you run very fast while wearing a staff. The Powerful Magic attack is vital to beat the last Coliseum battle with ease.

As you can see above, I have put a star next to them, that's because you will want them to have a star on their image. This makes the item about 30% stronger. When you create the equipment or weapon, you should save before doing so. When you create the item, it might at random get a star. How likely it is might be affected by it's materials condition (if they got a star), but no matter what you can always get a star when creating a new item. If it doesn't have star, just load back and try again.

You should also invest some time into leveling up, and this using some monsters you've caught. I highly recommend these monsters:

  • Wind Elemental
  • Wyvern
  • Gold Dragon

They can all be caught in the Wind Spirit Shrine. Wind Elemental and Wyvern is two special monsters that only appears after you hit those white glowing balls that don't spawn an enemy before after you smash it. These enemies are far more powerful than the normal enemies and they won't get smacked over when you fight them. Wyvern is a special green dragon, and Wind Elemental is a green fairy. Gold Dragon is the red/goldish dragon on the 6th floor.

You may want to level up your characters either at the 6th floor in the Wind Spirit Shrine or at Mystic Ruins (H,5). The main advantage with Wind Spirit Shrine is stronger enemies and permanent stat bonus items randomly dropped from both enemies and from pots (not solid chests). Those red robed reapers can drop items that let you get +2 darkness. If you go right at the 6th floor and take the second path left that doesn't take you to the other side, you should get to a room with a pot that can drop an item that gives you permanent +2 wind when consumed, this room also got a lot of very strong enemies. In the 5th floor there are many pots, and they can at random drop an item that gives you +2 flame or +2 strength. If you consume these items while having your monsters around they will get the permanent stat bonus too. You don't level up slower if you bring your monsters, they don't take any of your xp, in fact they probably kill some enemies making it go faster. Mystic Ruins is just a very quick place to level up and kill a lot of enemies. The enemies aren't as strong, but they still give a lot of xp.

You should also bring along cheap to make, but very efficiently healing food and temporarily stat bonus. You should have plenty of HP healing food and RP healing food. There is also a round where you will be very happy to have brought along some antidote (I think 3rd wave, at least the second time). A type of food I could highly recommend is Mont Blanc. It should be possible to create with things from the stores, though you will need to make butter, but that is created from milk.

Against the bosses in the arena, you should be running around them avoiding their attacks, and after playing them for a while you will know when you can safely attack them without taking any damage. Use your Powerful Magic attack for lots of damage while you run around. Always bring along your monsters. They might not do a lot of damage, but they keep the enemies busy. All of the normal bosses got patterns you can learn so you won't take any damage if you play correctly. The exception is the legendary golem.

When it comes to the legendary golem, you will just need a bit of luck and follow the above tips. When it uses it's homing missile attack, you should stop running to the side (around the golem), and instead go the opposite way and almost go against the golem. Don't go against the golem though, as it usually do a follow-up attack that often will kill you. Since it's way too likely you will die against the legendary golem and to not waste time or food, you should go and select your monsters. Then go back to your house and save before fighting it. I highly recommend you use some food that temporarily increase your intelligence right before you start the battle (+40-60).

Sorry for the bad English and the lack of proper sentence construction, but this post might make someone's life a lot easier, and I thought it was better I wrote it down sloppy in a hurry than not writing it down at all.
