About the Game:

Rune Factory: Tides of Destiny (known as Rune Factory: Oceans in Japan) is a Wii and PlayStation 3 role-playing game developed by Neverland Co. and published by Marvelous Entertainment. Players control a male and female character in one, the male side named Aden and the female side named Sonja, as they traverse the seas on a giant beast named Ymir. The beast can raise sunken islands and ships from the sea. Players will be able to farm, fight using a real-time battle system, and form relationships.

This game IS PS Move compatible, but it will mostly just make your arm very, very tired. It is NOT required.

Roadmap

Step 1: Complete the main story while working toward the relationship, fishing, crafting, and monster trophies

The story can be confusing at times, and the game offers little help on what to do. I have provided a spoiler-free breakdown of major game events (I'm putting it in a spoiler tag anyway).

[spoiler=walkthrough]

  • Name your Characters, get a tour
  • Obtain Ymir
  • Restore Spring Island
  • Get Earth Temple Key, Defeat Earth Temple Boss
  • Give Elena Green Core to power-up Ymir
  • Get Fire Shrine Key, Defeat Fire Shrine Boss, get Red core
  • Event with Odette at the Dragon Shrine
  • Get Water Shrine Key, Defeat Boss, get Blue core
  • Get Wind Shrine Key, Defeat Boss
  • Find the Grimoire, Fix Ymir
  • Get Dragon's Souls (talk to the 3 inn sisters)
  • Seal Shrines, Final Boss

Any time there is a Yellow-Star request on the bulletin board, take it and do it (These are the main story quests)

Author's Note: TAKE YOUR TIME! Kill enemies, don't run past them. You do NOT have to finish a shrine in one game-day. Attend festivals, they are fun and you can get some awesome items if you win them. Upgrade your house, James is at the Market in Church plaza on Thursdays and Festival days, it makes crafting a lot easier and gives you a greater range of crafting abilities. Save items you pick up, put them in your in-house storage container. Even if they aren't in your inventory, you can still craft if they are in storage. You will need lots of early game items to complete end-game crafts (magic powders, cheap cloth, etc). Take advantage of Ymir's travel time, it can provide invaluable to passing time since there is no "wait" feature in this game.

Finally, don't forget you can make wishes at the Dragon Shrine. One useful wish improves drop rate. Another can warp you and Ymir to any island already above water (3000G).

Through the main story you will earn:

(S) Golem Repairman, (B) Water Temple Cleared, (B) Fire Temple Cleared, (B) Earth Temple Cleared, (S) Legendary Golem Defeated, (G) Masked Man Revealed, (B) Rock Hard Riddle, (B) Island Raiser, and most of the Monster and Salvaging Trophies

For detailed mechanics on farming, marriage, weapons, crafting, and making tons of cash visit Satoshi42's awesome Gameplay Guide

Step 2: Post-Game and Cleanup

After finishing the main story, you will most likely have these trophies left, if not more:

  • (S) That Which Monsters Flee (Defeat 5000 Monsters)
  • (G) Master Crafter (Craft 1500 items)
  • (G) Master Angler (Land 2000 fish)
  • (S) Germ Factory (Catch a cold 100 times)
  • (S) Most Popular (Earn the goodwill of many residents of Fenith Island)

Not to worry though, you can't miss anything! The game goes on forever.

A Note on Farming (the more prosperity you have, the more you can grow):

Yellow Spirits give 2% prosperity to Spring Island

Green Spirits give 2% prosperity to Fall Island

Red Spirits give 2% prosperity to Summer Island

Blue Spirits give 2% prosperity to Winter Island

You will most likely get this by doing every non-repeatable request that comes your way. I got it right before post-game. If you just want to get it over with without doing requests (I don't really advise this), but if you are bored, why not.

By the end of the game, assuming you weren't lazy in temples and ran past enemies and have done most of the coliseum, you should have in the range of 3000-3500 monster kills. To finish this off, head to the third floor of the Earth Shrine. Take the right at the fork, grab your favorite sword, and whack away (make sure you don't accidentally destroy the monster spawners). There are 3 monster spawners, so you will easily be occupied by an infinite spawning of carnage. By the end of the game you should be able to kill these guys in one hit. I killed roughly 700 monsters per game day, so this trophy took about 20 minutes to finish.

These are the big monsters you find in the game while riding Ymir. A good rule of thumb is to stop what you're doing when riding Ymir if you hear Sonja say, "What was that", hit down  on the D-Pad and there will be a monster there. Kill it, and before you know it, you will have this trophy. For more help, visit Satoshi42's Gameplay Guide.

pstevo123 says: "For Giant Giant Destroyer: when you find one and defeat it, leave the Golem there sleep the night then came back move a little and another Giant Monster will show."

You will assuredly get this if you want money in this game. On the 11th of every month, items are 30% off. This means you can run to the inn, buy milk, take it to a pot, and craft "hot milk". You can then sell these "hot milks" via haggling back to Lily or Odette for roughly a 100G profit. Also, if you are making your own weapons (which you should) and accessories (which you should), you will have this simply raising your smithing and crafting skills to max.

This is an incredibly boring trophy, but it can make you some easy money, especially if you have cooking equipment in your house. You receive a fishing pole early in the game from a request. You can upgrade it at the forge, which improves your chances of catching certain fish.

The best way to grind this out is to catch fish any time it is raining throughout the game. Not for the whole day or anything, but when you get a chance. Rain improves the chances of a fish popping up. You can use the fish you catch to make various grilled fish or shashimi (which can be sold or given as gifts to several residents).

For me, this was my last trophy.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1216/33.jpg Overmedicated (S)

Consume 100 recovery drinks.

Assuming you use recovery drinks throughout the game, you should get this no problem. If by chance you are done with every other trophy and still don't have this, have something wail on you and consume the remaining drinks (recovery drinks can either be made, or bought from the church).

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1216/34.jpg Germ Factory (S)

Catch a cold 100 times.

You have a chance of catching a cold any time you, stay out too late, pass out from exhaustion, or die. Most likely you will NOT get this through normal game progression. I found that it took passing out 193 times, to catch a cold 100 times.

If you need to grind this trophy get comfy in your house, use your weapon of choice over and over until you die. You will wake up with half health and half RP and a 50% chance of having a cold. If you get a cold, GREAT! Rinse and repeat, because the side-effect of having a cold is increased RP cost, so you can die faster!

A similar way, if you have a turbo controller, is to turbo square with the legendary staff. You will die about 3 times per minute, giving you time to catch some ZzZ's or a movie.

You can get a cold healed by making cold medicine, buying cold medicine, or getting an exam for 100 GP from the church.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1216/35.jpg Jumping for Joy (B)

Perform a double-jump 500 times.

A double jump is performed by pressing :cross: to jump, followed by :cross: again while in the air. I got this stupidly early in the game because I jump around a lot in games where I have to walk everywhere. It is also a great way to avoid melee enemies (especially if you use the Storm or Wind Staves).

MISCELLANEOUS TROPHIES

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1216/38.jpg Trophies 101 (B) This trophy is potentially missable

Listen to Maerwen's explanation about trophies.

After getting Maerwen's (the dark elf at the mansion) relationship up to 2, a random conversation with her may result in her asking if you know about trophies, reply no, listen to her blabber and the trophy will pop.

Some say you CANNOT get this trophy if you say "yes" to her, but others claim you can still get it to pop up in conversation after the fact. Also, the relationship does NOT have to be 2 exactly, 2 or above is fine.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1216/26.jpg Failed Chef (B)

Fail at cooking one time.

You will undoubtedly fail at cooking more than once... but just in case you are perfect, purposely fail at cooking until you get a "failed dish" (don't worry, you don't lose any material from a failed craft (just RP))

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1216/27.jpg Insomniac (B)

Stay awake until you collapse at 5 AM.

Pretty self-explanatory... Stay up until 5 AM, at which point you will fall asleep and the trophy will pop.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1216/28.jpg Most Popular (S)

Earn the goodwill of many residents of Fenith Island.

To do this you need to get the following residents to relationship level 6.

[spoiler=residents]

  • Lily
  • Odette
  • Violet
  • Electra
  • Elena
  • Maerwen
  • Sierra
  • Pandora
  • Joe
  • Mikoto
  • James
  • Bismark
  • Beatrix
  • Bacchus
  • Quinn
  • Kelsey
  • Gerard
  • Jocelyn

This can be done POST-GAME, but I highly recommend working on this throughout the story as well. Getting Jocelyn up to 6 is the hardest since she is only around on Thursdays, Holidays, and Festivals. You get relationship points for talking to someone every day, giving them gifts every day, and doing requests for them. You can check everyone's favorite gifts in Satoshi42's Gameplay Guide. Finally, to check relationship progress, go to your menu by pressing "start" and click the villagers tab.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1216/36.jpg Gladiator (S)

Win a battle in the coliseum.

You will uncover the coliseum by doing a request for Jocelyn toward the end of the game. In it there will be several dragon statues with various bosses and free for all fights. I recommend bringing along some help (monsters you have captured) because these fights can be a little overwhelming. If you by chance have the "Legendary Staff" at this point, SPAM :triangle:! It makes these fights so easy you will want to die. After you defeat every dragon, this trophy will pop.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1216/37.jpg Champion (G)

Achieve repeat victories in the coliseum.

After fighting all the dragons and getting the Gladiator Trophy you can fight the dragon statues once again. This time it will be a hell of a lot harder, but kind of fun. Once you defeat a statue, it will crumble. Defeat all the statues again, and this trophy will pop.

If you are having trouble with this, refer to Satoshi42's Gameplay Guide since the last boss can be pretty challenging and frustrating.

STORY TROPHIES

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1216/07.jpg Rock Hard Riddle (B)

Get to the bottom of why Sprout Island turned to stone.

Sprout Island is "Spring Island" and you will get this automatically pretty early in the game.

[spoiler=what]

You have to use a spirit to revive the island. You know, those floaty things that are around tree-stumps and what-not? Drop them from your inventory to restore the island.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1216/16.jpg Golem Repairman (S)

Find out what's wrong with the Plant Golem and get him working again.

[spoiler=ymir]

After finding the Grimoire Ymir will break. Talk to Elena and she will tell you there is an evil inside of him. Go inside and destroy the mini-boss

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1216/17.jpg Water Temple Cleared (B)

Lift the stone curse from the Water Temple.

See Earth Temple Cleared

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1216/18.jpg Fire Temple Cleared (B)

Lift the stone curse from the Fire Temple.

See Earth Temple Cleared

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1216/19.jpg Earth Temple Cleared (B)

Lift the stone curse from the Earth Temple.

The dragon will tell you to restore the temples. You do this by talking to Lily, Odette, and Violet respectively, and asking them to come with you to seal the shrine(s).

[spoiler=boss]

This happens right before fighting the legendary golem

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1216/20.jpg Legendary Golem Defeated (S)

Defeat the Legendary Golem.

[spoiler=golemboss]

This fight is really easy. You fight as Ymir and basically all you need to do is block until there is an opening. Warning, you cannot just randomly swing at this guy, he will most likely 1-shot kill you. Block until you learn his movements.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1216/21.jpg Masked Man Revealed (G)

See the true face of the man in the mask.

[spoiler=mask]

This really wasn't a surprise to me, but anyway, the masked man is the Final Boss of Rune Factory. He isn't hard and you get two free deaths when fighting him (due to the power of friendship??????). If you are having trouble with this fight, grab some enemy companions to distract him, and craft yourself a Legendary Staff. Use it's "powerful magic" component for complete ownage.

From Sarasaland: "In the final boss fight, you get as many lives as you have marriage candidates at FP6. And Sonja, plus the Goblin Pirate Captain. So if you have 10 people (I'm positive they have to be marriage candidates, though I could be wrong) at level 6, they'll all lend you their strength when you lose your HP, and the other two so you'd have 12 lives. VERRRRY useful."

Crafting/Post-Game

Crafting+Farming

Since there is a little confusion between the Romaji and actual English translation of this game I thought I would clarify a few things from Satoshi42's guide.

Accessory Crafting: Make Handknit Hats (1 Yarn Ball, 1 Small Fleece for starting profit in accessories. Once your accessory level is 10, make Handknit Scarves (2x Yarn Balls)

Other:

  • "Harvest" type monsters are largely useless.
  • Buy 500 monster cookies at a time, this will only run you 10,000G, and you will most likely make 100k+ for your efforts
  • The Rusty Axe is used to cut down trees
  • Spirit Wands are used to plan crops/trees
  • The "God Staff" is actually called the "Legendary Staff"
  • The Cheap Hammer can drop fruit from trees and smash mine veins (I actually used the Battle Hammer)
  • The level 3 carpentry craft "Wastebasket" requires 1 oak and will make you a TON of cash, especially if you haggle. Once an item is haggled, all subsequent items in that transaction will be haggled (haggle the wastebasket to 1300, sell it, then sell all your others, they will also sell for 1300)

Post-Game

I assumed beating the game was all that was required to get married. However, you must separate yourself from Sonja first. In the spoiler tag is a summary of what you need to do in post-game.

[spoiler=postgame]

  • Speak to Elena about Ymir, she will tell you she might be able to restore him with 15 shards of Ymir and asks you to return to her when you have them. You get these by talking to your fellow islanders. There are MORE than 15, but having more doesn't seem to do much. Just remember who you talk to and you shouldn't have any trouble. Return the shards to Elena, Ymir will be back the next day.

  • You will notice there are some different looking quests on the board. Most of them are quite nice because they allow you to get the final few islands you might need for the Master Savager Trophy. If by chance you have already happened upon the islands in the quest, just talk to the NPC right after getting the quest, and easily complete it.

  • After some random quests from the 3 sisters Talk to Pandora. She will give you a book to give to Lily. If you lose the book, talk to Joe. Lily will tell you it is possible to separate you from Sonja with a Friendship Compass. Ask Bacchus about the friendship compass and he will tell you to ask Joe. Joe tells you he will get it eventually (the next day), so wait one day and talk to Joe again. Once you have the compass talk to Lily again. Now, head to the Dragon Shrine. You can check the "progress" of the compass here. There are 12 lights on the compass. All the "lit up" lights really are, are the number of people you have up to friendship level 6. Kelsey and Quinn DO NOT count. I have no idea why. After getting 12 people to friendship level 6, check it at the Shrine for a "hey, let's tell Lily event". Return to Lily. Sonja will now be separated, congrats. You have a choice of whether or not you want your power to go to Sonja or Aden. YOUR CHOICE CANNOT BE UNDONE, so chose carefully. You are really just pick the character you want to play as (I'm assuming since I picked the male role).

  • After separation, the Dragon at the Shrine will ask you to seal the Wind Shrine.

  • It is easiest to get married to Aden or Sonja, because they start out at a maxed out 8 friendship level. You can simply talk to them over the course of a few days to get that to 9. Getting them to 10 takes as little as 3 days, since they are completely obsessed with you.

  • The Marriage quest is detailed in Satoshi42's guide (although, I want to clarify that you give the engagement ring as you would a gift to a NPC after the 2nd date. It doesn't automatically happen or anything)

  • After you have your baby, you will get a free stuffed Wooly from Gerard (this is a story quest for some reason)

-If ever in doubt about what monster farms what or what monster drops what, don't be afraid to check the Japanese Wiki. With Google Translate it is surprisingly easy to understand and useful when you can't find information you need.

Nice Guide, I was looking at making one when i got the (P) but could never find the time.

For Master Salvager you can Leave the area sleep a day and then lift the same island this counts to the 30

For Giant Giant Destroyer: when you find one and defeat it, leave the Golem there sleep the night then came back move a little and another Giant Monster will show.

All in all great guide.

Great guide, definitely going to use it, but I might mention that in the final boss fight, you get as many lives as you have marriage candidates at FP6. And Sonja, plus the Goblin Pirate Captain. You shouldn't be missing anything. The request is available after doing like 3 archaeological requests for Jocelyn. I remember getting this quest before I finished the story...

What doesn't make sense to me is you say you can't even go to the island? You should be able to at least do that much. Have you been able to salvage it at least?

The paintings aren't really called "paintings". They have unique names. I don't remember, but I think you can tell it's a painting just by the fact that it has a weird name. An example would be something like, "Sunset over a Dark Sky".

Anyway, you should only have to do her main quests to get it. Focus on completing the "raise up all the islands" trophy and do the non-repeatable requests from the bulletin board (from anyone).... There is a maximum number of requests that can be on the bulletin board.

Great roadmap!

I'll be getting my platinum tonight (just need to get 2 more villagers to level 6 friendship).

I gotta say, I was ready to ship this game back to Gamefly about 3 hours in, but I stuck it out and loved it right up until I had to catch 2000 fish... I was once again ready to ship it back, but stuck it out for the plat because I had invested a good 65 hours into it. :)
