Section 2. Introduction

Rocket Knight is a 2D platformer that carries on from two previous games which were released over 15 years ago on the Sega Genesis (Master System). It's not a graphical upgrade of either game but its own unique game with its own levels; although enemies from previous games are present. The game itself is quite short but keeps the feel of an old game with its infuriating cheap tactics to feel difficult. You may find yourself having to play the game repeatedly to earn some of the more difficult trophies.

Section 2.1 Things you should know

To help make this game easier you should understand three very important things. Your melee attack (:square:) can reflect certain enemy projectiles; enemies that throw dynamite and bombs can have them directed back at them if you strike their attack. Your Rocket Burst (:circle:+:ls:) also gives you invincibility against certain enemy attacks. These may not sound too important but when you find yourself going for the harder trophies, knowing this will help you. If you find yourself going for a specific trophy (score/speed) and find yourself falling short of what you'd like to be at. You can select Restart from the pause menu and it'll have you restart the level with no penalties. Your life count, score and timer will reset to what they were at when you started the level.

Section 2.2 Controls (Platforming)

:ls: = Move

 = N/A

 = Duck

:left: = Turn/Move Left

:right: = Turn/Move Right

:square: = Melee Attack

:triangle: = Burst Shot

:cross: = Jump / :cross: (in air) = Burst Assist

:circle: = Burst Vortex / :circle:+:ls: = Rocket Burst / (double tap):circle:+:ls: = Burst Drill

Section 2.3 Controls (Flying)

:ls: = Move

:up:/:down:/:left:/:right: = Move Up/Down/Left/Right

:square: = Burst Shot / (hold and release):square: = Charge Burst Shot

:circle: = Burst Dash

Section 3. Walkthrough

The game is divided up into 14 levels, 4 of which are bosses and 3 of which are flying levels. You'll need to go through the entire game at least 3 times to earn all the trophies and you'll need to do well to earn the missable trophies. What makes it difficult is you need to perform certain tasks against 3 of the bosses and if you don't you can miss out on specific trophies.

Section 3.1 Normal Mode

Start your new game by selecting Arcade and Normal Mode. Play through the game and learn the ins and outs of it. It may take some trial and error to get through the more difficult spots but it shouldn't pose too much of a problem. You can also work on earning the few combat/level specific trophies here, but I'd advise to attempt them later when you're more familiar with the game.

Section 3.2 Hard Mode

After your first playthrough you'll have access to Hard Mode. So go ahead and start a new game on Hard Mode; the only changes in Hard Mode is there are more enemies and bosses take more damage to kill. Now while the game is mostly unchanged you will need to perform certain actions on the first 3 bosses to complete the game on Hard Mode. If you do not perform these actions at least once in the fight and continue on, the game will automatically revert to Normal Mode and you will not be able to earn any of the Hard Mode trophies.

Level 1.4 - Forest Shredder

You need to hit this boss in its weak spot with its own dynamite.

This stage has 3 wood platform on the left and right side. Get to the top platform and the boss will launch dynamite from its backside towards you. Jump towards the boss and swing your sword to hit a piece of dynamite into the bosses weak spot. If you do it correctly you will hear a chime. After defeating the boss the game will ask you which difficulty you wish to continue on, select Hard.

Level 2.4 - The Wolf King

You need to hit a weak platform when he's on it and make him fall.

This stage has multiple levels on it; you start out on the bottom. The Wolf King has an ability where he howls and makes blocks drop from the sky, some of these blocks will plug the holes in the floor of the upper levels. You need to bait the Wolf King to stand on one of those blocks and then destroy it with the Burst Drill ability. This will make the boss fall onto the lower level and take damage. If you do it correctly you will hear a chime. After defeating the boss the game will ask you which difficulty you wish to continue on, select Hard.

Level 3.3 - Axel Gear

You need to hit Axel with his own Purple Ball attack.

This stage is very small and unfortunately Axel flies and dodges well which can make him hard to reach. He has one ability where he releases a purple ball and stays stationary while laughing. This ball will follow you and you need to lead the ball back to Axel and have it hit him instead of having it hit you. If you do it correctly you will hear a chime. After defeating the boss the game will ask you which difficulty you wish to continue on, select Hard.

Unlike the trophies you earned in Normal Mode, all of the Hard Mode trophies require specific criteria for each one. See each specific trophy in the Trophy Guide for how to unlock them. However even if you are to miss all the Hard Mode trophies but make it to the end of the game you will at least have Gold Sparkster Mode unlocked.

Section 3.3 Gold Sparkster Mode

After beating the game on Hard Mode you will have access to the hardest part of the game. In Gold Sparkster Mode the game has additional enemies spawn on top of Hard Mode while the bosses will require a lot more damage to put down; Sparkster will be in Gold Armor with half his health (4 hearts) but will regenerate power faster. This will require a lot of patience and practice to clear. You only have 3 continues and a limited amount of lives. Use the restart trick to keep practicing without losing any actual progress. Make it through this mode and you'll have earned a very difficult trophy.

Defeat 5 enemies in a single Rocket Burst or Drill attack

This trophy requires you to kill 5 enemies with a Rocket Burst or Drill attack; while it's not too hard there are only a few places where it can be done. At the end of Level 1.1 and 1.3 you will be under attack from wolves, they will spawn in with greater numbers as you kill them. The final spawn will be 5 wolves, bait them to group up and move in for the kill. You'll earn this trophy if you take out all 5 of them in a single attack.

Defeat 3 enemies with a single reflected projectile

This trophy requires you to kill 5 enemies with a reflected projectile that an enemy throws; you can reflect bombs and dynamite. At the end of Level 1.1 and 1.3 you will be under attack from wolves, they will spawn in with greater numbers as you kill them. Halfway through their attack, wolves with dynamite will start appearing. Bait the enemies into grouping up and deflect a thrown dynamite back at them. If you take out 3 enemies with a single deflected projectile you'll earn this trophy.

Completed Arcade Mode on Hard in a Single Playthrough

(Missable) Complete all 14 levels on Arcade Mode while playing on Hard difficulty. You cannot exit the game and come back later, you must play through the entire game in one sitting. This trophy is missable since this is Hard difficulty which means you must also perform the special action against the 3 bosses or the game will drop you back into Normal difficulty. If you defeat a boss without performing the special action you will have to restart your entire playthrough all over again.

Completed all stages below par time

(Missable) Complete all 14 levels par time on Arcade Mode in any difficulty. This trophy can be difficult, especially on the Axel fight. This trophy will pop at the score screen after completing the final levels par time. This trophy is missable since you have to clear every stage within a time limit. If you are cutting close to the par time you can choose to restart the level and try again, but if you clear the level and are not in the time limit you will have to restart your entire playthrough all over again.

Completed Arcade Mode scoring One Million Points or more

(Missable) You need to play Arcade Mode and in at least Hard difficulty to earn this trophy. Everything awards more points on the higher difficulties and this cannot be accomplished on Normal. You can also earn point multipliers by defeating enemies or collecting items in quick succession. You need to clear all 14 levels with a score over 1,000,000 points; this trophy will pop at the final score screen. This trophy is missable on two fronts; the first is you need to clear the game in Hard difficulty or higher to earn enough points, but you must also be sure to score enough points by the end of the game. If you find yourself coming up short or missing a bosses special action you can restart the level and try again.

Completed Arcade Mode on Hard within 60 minutes

(Missable) You need to play Arcade Mode and clear it within 60 minutes on Hard difficulty. This trophy is one of the tougher trophies to earn and is easily missable as you need to beat the entire game in a short time limit. You will also need to play through the entire game on Hard difficulty which means you'll need to hit all 3 bosses with the special attacks or be dropped to Normal difficulty. The timer only runs during the playable levels and not during cutscenes. You can see your total elapsed time at the end of each level or by pausing the game. Beat all 14 levels under 60 minutes to earn this trophy.

Completed Gold Sparkster Mode

To unlock Gold Sparkster Mode you will need to clear the entire game on Hard difficulty. In Gold Sparkster Mode the game has additional enemies spawn on top of Hard Mode while the bosses will require a lot more damage to put down; Sparkster will be in Gold Armor with half his health (4 hearts) but will regenerate power faster. This mode is very difficult and will require a lot of practice, patience and persistence to make it through the game. You won't need to perform the special attacks on each boss to stay in the difficulty, just focus on making it through the game. Collecting the extra lives in each level gives you more tries and you should use the Restart trick if you are having problems.

You may have quit the game but I imagine you continued from your previous spot?

Yes. I didn't know about the restart thing, so I saved after every level to ps plus, and copied back the savegame from ps plus when I lost all my lives and continues.

I thought the trophy is about this, I mean the game watches when the player leaves the game, and when that happens, the trophy won't pop. Seems like I was wrong, and I'm glad I got the trophy :)

  • 1 year later...

Just a little heads up, the original two games were released for the Mega Drive, not the Master System. A different version of Sparkster (the second game) was released at the same time for the SNES too. Apart from that tiny trivial bit - excellent guide.
