Introduction

Rock of the Dead is an on-rails, music horror game by Epicenter Studios. The premise is similar to the Dreamcast game, The Typing of the Dead where you used your keyboard and words as your weapons against enemies. Only this time it is more like Guitar Hero meets House of the Dead in which your instrument playing skills is your only weapon. Your main character, voiced by Neil Patrick Harris is on a mission to rescue his love interest, voiced by Felicia Day and has the power of rock to defeat enemies. Music tracks in the game are public domain, and segments of popular Rob Zombie tracks.

Rock of the Dead is compatible with Rock Band, Guitar Hero guitars and drum sets. A standard PS3 controller is also compatible but you are very likely to have a hard time with notes outside of the easy/normal difficulty. The game’s difficulty stems from the fact the music measure setup is greatly different from the popular music games like Rock Band and Guitar Hero. Notes are presented horizontally and in many times, in several layers as opposed to one standard vertical measure that most players are used to. So even expert-level players in Rock Band and Guitar Hero will find the game’s hardest difficulty challenging. This is compounded even more if you decide to play with the tacked-on co-op mode as there will be moments of "is that mine or yours?" when it comes to note measures.

Roadmap

Step 1: Playthrough the campaign on Normal difficulty

Your main focus here is just get through the campaign and unlock all the levels, in-which you’ll defeat all the bosses for the progression trophies and finish with either the evil or good ending. You can decide to play on any difficulty higher than Normal if you so choose, although to get a good grasp of the game mechanics and learning curve I suggest normal difficulty to start your campaign. As the harder difficulties only relate to badges trophies.

As you play though the levels, you are likely to complete more than 20 of the in-game challenges along the way to unlock Fender Bender and Finger Pickin’ Good. As the game is on-rails, all the collectibles, which are guitar sticks and data in this game are in open areas as you progress through levels. You’ll want to be aware of them however so if you see notes appearing anywhere on the screen standing alone, be sure to complete those note measures to "pick up" that collectible. If you pick up any data crystals, you can upgrade your shield or blast attack at the end of each level. You will want to focus on getting one of them to Level 4 for Groovy.

Step 2: Clean-up and Level Select on Thrasher difficulty

After finishing the campaign with one of the endings, you will want to re-play the Brainwashed level one more time via level select and choose the opposite path of the previous ending that you did for the opposite ending trophy. See the trophy guide for the path you need to follow for each respective ending.

With everything unlocked, go to the bonus levels and play the Church level for In the Zone! if still you need that trophy. Also if you did not get Perfect and/or Rock Will Protect Me! during your campaign run, you can replay the evil ending final Level for easier path to those trophies.

Aside from the above, you are likely left with Collector and the higher difficulty badge trophies. You can go back through levels via level select and change to the applicable difficulty to Thrasher if you want to also concurrently unlock the lower difficulty trophies while earning badges. This is where most of your in-game time and expert instrument skills will be spent, practicing and replaying levels to earn all the possible badges for the respective trophies.

Trophy Guide

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/725/01.jpgPerfect! (B)

Complete a level with 100% accuracy.

Here you must complete a level with 100% note accuracy. See spoiler for an easy method on what ending path you should take and how to get this trophy during the final level of the game.

[spoiler=go]

The easiest way to do this is to play on easy mode and take the evil path in the Brainwashed level by turning all the green monitors to red. Once you take the evil route, the following level will be "Game Over!" in-which you must play defense against missile attacks. In easy mode, the missiles are just one note to hit. The music score to defeat the missile launchers are single notes to strum. This should unlock upon completing the level if you were 100% accurate.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/725/02.jpgCollector (B)

Unlock all extras.

This involves getting all the Picks and Data Crystals "collectibles" in all the levels. All of them are in open areas, and you'll need to strum/hit the notes in-time and without mistake to pick these up. Most levels have two Picks and two Data Crystals. You can refer to the level select screen to see how many you have remaining.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/725/03.jpgSilver Record (B)

Aquire all badges on 2 levels. (Normal difficulty)

See Multi Platinum!

You just need to earn all five badges in any two levels in the campaign on Normal difficulty.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/725/04.jpgGold Record (B)

Aquire all badges on 4 levels. (Normal difficulty)

See Multi Platinum!

You just need to earn all five badges in any four levels in the campaign on Normal difficulty.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/725/05.jpgPlatinum Record! (B)

Aquire all badges on all levels. (Normal difficulty)

See Multi Platinum!

All badges need to be completed on Normal difficulty.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/725/07.jpgMulti Platinum! (B)

Acquire all badges on all levels. (Thrasher difficulty)

For this trophy, all badges need to be completed on Thrasher difficulty.

Badges are acquired by completing in-game objectives that are presented on the level screen before you start the level. They can only be earned only on Normal or higher difficulty to unlock their respective trophies. You can work on these one or several at a time, so if you just get one badge out of five on a level. It will remain completed, and in subsequent runs you can just work on any missing progress badges.

For example, if you are having difficulty clearing a level because you are trying for the max combo badge as well, you can just focus on the continues badge first to get that of the way. Than in another run focus on another badge or more. Also not all levels have badges.

These are the five 5 badges that have to be earned in each level that has badges:

Score - Each level has a target score you must achieve to earn this badge. Getting the target score will involve getting the most amount of points by a combination of being accurate, completing challenges, combos, and perfect hits.

Accuracy - Target accuracy required, this is normally 90% to earn the badge. There are no 100% accuracy levels.

Max Combo - A combo is considered the amount of notes you must strum/hit in succession without mistake. A string of "perfect" ratings will increase the combo. However you can also increase combos with a succession of "Great" and "Poor" combos as well. Although this isn't a very consistent way to earn this since the note variations are different between enemies, and you may not always reliably get "Great" ratings if you always miss one note for example.

Continues - This badge involves completing the level without any deaths. You do not lose health by missing notes as only enemy damage will. So if you don't kill enemies fast enough, they will get close to attack or their projectiles will damage you. Do remember the more perfect hits you compile, the more health you will regain. You are welcome to strum, spam, and/or hit every button on your controller during times you feel you are in a health jam. Doing this method however you are likely miss out on score and accuracy badges due to lower accuracy. But it is an option to earn this badge on its own if you are having difficulty with not dying.

Challenges - On the level select screen you will see the number of challenges you will need to complete in that level. These will show up in as roll-off, or enemy challenges in certain areas during a level. The most common challenges are humans trying to get to safety from swarms of enemies in which you will have a limited amount of time to appropriately hit the notes shown on the screen otherwise they will die and the challenge will be considered failed. As you progress late in the game, these challenges will get much higher in number and as much as 60+ enemies would need to be defeated in an allocated amount of time.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/725/08.jpgTrailer Trashed (B)

Defeat the Trailersaurus Boss.

Story-related, cannot be missed. This will unlock upon defeating the Trailersaurus Boss. This boss is straight-forward, you just need to make sure you accurately and timely hit the notes when he is about to claw you.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/725/09.jpgMythbusted (B)

Defeat the Crocodile Boss.

Story-related, cannot be missed. This will unlock upon defeating the Crocodile Boss. There are several sequences to this boss battle. The first you will need to save some workers escaping by hitting notes in succession. Than have waves of enemies to defeat before you can damage the boss again.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/725/10.jpgCrazy Train (B)

Defeat the Rat Boss.

Story-related, cannot be missed. This will unlock upon defeating the Rat Boss. This boss can be tricky at-first as you will be fighting a Rat chasing you on a train. There will be two sets of note measures presented on the screen. Completing the top one will damage the rat, while the bottom will slow him down. You will want to make sure you have some distance between the train and the rat as once he gets too close, you will sustain a lot of damage. So alternate between these sequences when they become available.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/725/11.jpgUnidentified Rocking Object (B)

Defeat the UFO Boss.

Story-related, cannot be missed. This will unlock upon defeating the UFO Boss. You'll be on a roof and have several mob sequences in-between damaging the boss just like with the previous boss. Very straight-forward battle.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/725/12.jpgRocked the Doodlebug (B)

Defeat the Ant Lion Boss.

Story-related, cannot be missed. This will unlock upon defeating the Ant Lion Boss. Same as previous bosses, you'll have timed sequences, followed by enemy mobs in-between until the boss reappears again to defeat.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/725/13.jpgBlack Hole Strum (B)

Destroy the Transport Boss.

Story-related, cannot be missed. This will unlock upon defeating the Transport Boss. Same as previous bosses here. Timed note sequences, and more enemy mobs in-between.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/725/14.jpgHeavy Metal (B)

Defeat the Spider Boss.

Story-related, cannot be missed. This will unlock upon defeating the Spider Boss. Same as previous bosses, timed-sequences and enemy mob battles in-between. I felt the note-accuracy timing sequence against the spider to be a little shorter than all the previous bosses but its still manageable. Just study the pattern and you'll get through it. Towards the end of this battle, the last set of mobs will present several measures on the screen. Just take them one at a time.

Complete 10 Challenges.

See Finger Pickin' Good

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/725/16.jpgFinger Pickin' Good (B)

Complete 20 Challenges.

These will show up in as roll-off, or enemy challenges in certain areas during a level. You just need to complete any 20 challenges in the campaign. It is likely you'll get these naturally considering the amount of challenges in each level. The most common challenges are humans trying to get to safety from swarms of enemies in which you will have a limited amount of time to appropriately hit the notes shown on the screen otherwise they will die and the challenge will be considered failed.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/725/17.jpgIn the Zone! (B)

Obtain a score multiplier of 100.

This involves getting the multiplier box to 100, which is getting 100 enemies defeated in a row without mistake. This will unlock immediately once your multiplier box reaches 100 and can be completed on any difficulty. For an easier method, about half-way in the campaign, you'll unlock several bonus levels. Play the church bonus level on easy difficulty solely for this trophy. As it has manageable challenges when playing on easy. Keep practicing if-needed on this level, and it should be yours!

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/725/18.jpgRock to the Rescue! (B)

Finish the game and get the good ending.

You will know you are near the end of the game for this once you get to the Brainwashed! level. You'll be given instructions on what the monitor colors mean, and how the ending might entail. To get the good ending, you'll want to change all the red monitors to green by correctly hitting the applicable notes on the monitors in the allocated amount of time. If you are too slow, you will take damage and start from the beginning of that sequence again.

After you made the choice, you will proceed to progress to the final level. This will unlock upon conclusion of the game.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/725/19.jpgSocial Destruction (B)

Finish the game and get the evil ending

You will know you are near the end of the game for this once you get to the Brainwashed! level. You'll be given instructions on what the monitor colors mean, and how the ending might entail. To get the evil ending, you'll want to change all the green monitors to red by correctly hitting the applicable notes on the monitors in the allocated amount of time. If you are too slow, you will take damage and start from the beginning of that sequence again.

After you made the choice, you will proceed to progress to the final level. This will unlock upon conclusion of the game.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/725/20.jpgGroovy! (B)

Fully upgrade your shield or blast attack.

As you collect Data Crystals during levels, you will be given the opportunity to upgrade your shield and blast attack at the end of the level. Simply raise at-least one of them to Level 4 for this trophy.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/725/21.jpgRock will Protect Me! (B)

Complete any level taking no damage.

You will need to complete any level, on any difficulty without taking any damage. Hitting notes timely and correctly will defeat enemies and prevent projectile attacks from damaging you. While you can spam, strum, or hit all the keys to get through a lot of notes on the screen. This may not always be a reliable method to prevent damage. For an easier method refer to the Perfect! trophy, as you can obtain this trophy using the same method.

Is this a joke ?

If it is I'm not laughing.

Plus the finger positions of that first poster is wrong, why is the thumb half way across the fretboard. FAIL

haha, seriously! I really want to know what the idea was behind that game cover. Sadly, it is also the only image the developer really uses to advertise the game.

It sure was a sign of things to come!

LOL yeah. I mean playing music to keep zombies away ?

Thats stupid.

Now for ''tapping'' on a guitar I believe in ''anchoring'' the thumb a little over the first string if one is tapping on like lets say the 6th string. But not halfway across the board.

Oh wow thats a plastic guitar in the poster I just noticed. So hes placing his fingers wrong entirely hes playing upside down on a plastic guitar, and in real life aswell :D

Well, the game is not THAT bad, as music is pretty much your ammo. It is a good concept on-paper like Type of the Dead was. But here they missed the boat by being too vanilla, and repetitive. The game builds itself by seeing how many zombies, err note measures it can throw at-once.

Sticker shock ($40) for a short retail title with Wii-like graphics, plus subpar to poor reviews kept a lot of music players running away. Trophy hunters are also turned off by having no (P) and only 21 (B) versus 1000 GS available on Xbox 360 for the same game.

Certainly not a big fan of games where the trophy weight doesn't make any sense for the effort required.

I might get this game when it's bargain basement cheap, but no platinum and a very high difficulty would put me off a lot. I'm curious as to why the XBox version gets 1,000GS, but here we get shafted. Don't developers know that a platinum can potentially sway gamers towards buying the game? Not all gamers, mind.

Yeah, I remember being very surprised a game of this scale only getting small-scale trophies. There are family games that are MUCH shorter, and smaller scale-wise. Yet they get large-scale trophies with a (P). Sony usually makes that call though.

GameFly was selling off copies for dirt cheap recently. This sure was one game I had a hard time finding anywhere.

Despite the issues, it still did not turn me off from wanting to play it. Being a past Guitar Hero-nut and having played the typing game on Dreamcast. I owed it to myself to give it a whirl.

Having said that, COD Classic has a platinum, yet only worth 250GS on the XBox - makes you wonder what really goes on in these developers' heads!

I'll wait till LoAl finishes with his copy, as I'm sure he'll happily send it to me ;)

Sweet! Yeah I forgot all about COD Classic on 360 got the short-end of the stick. What I hated was that game did not stack the difficulty trophies, grr! Boo to GS-to-trophy inconsistency!

Yeah but dude Classic platnium is REALLY respected platnium no doubt. Some say its harder the W@W I doubt that but who knows.

It was testing at-times and its definitely harder on the PS3 than the PC just because you can't save on-demand. Still though, this game can be seen as "harder" merely because of the badge factor. I started Thrasher as I did one level on that difficulty with all badges but spending 10 hours on it is not on the top of my priorities. I'd rather play a more fun game like another Guitar Hero game on Expert in all honesty.

I hear ya. That's the thing, if games had the playability of Guitar Hero or Rock Band (I prefer RB, mainly because of the gaming interface which I feel to be superior), then people wouldn't have issues with a difficult trophy set. I've played The Beatles Rock Band a lot, and I mean A LOT! The fact I may never get the platinum doesn't bother me all that much.

Uh, I don't think the box art is depicting guitar-playing... it looks more like a "victory" pose to me. :| Kinda the same idea as a knight holding their sword in the air, a marine holding their rifle in the air.. things of that nature. Heck, take a look at the Brutal Legend box art.
