Astro Admiral Videos for X-Treme (by Sajiko)

Introduction:

What do you get when you cross a Bullet Hell game with a Rhythm game, then reverse it? Retro/Grade, that's what! Retro/Grade is a very unique and innovative game that fuses the white knuckle thrills and over the top visuals of a shooter with the broad appeal of a rhythm game. Players are forced to dodge enemy projectiles while positioning the ship to be in the correct place to fire their lasers when their shots come back to them. Earning 100% in Retro/Grade will take a significant amount of skill, as X-TREME difficulty really is just that. You'll need to practically memorize the levels and have awesome fast reflexes to earn some of the trophies.

Before you start - Controller or Guitar:

In Retro/Grade, you get two options: using the humble controller, or using the any PS3-compatible guitar. With adaption, a guitar would be far better for the game, however it takes a great deal of getting used to, as the game is different to other rhythm games in that you have to dodge enemy fire as well as hit the notes. So if you're willing to adjust to these differences, then you'll most likely benefit from using a guitar. However, a controller is perfectly fine for this, though you can get overwhelmed at times. I personally prefer the controller, as adapting to using the guitar is just too awkward.

Walkthrough:

Step 0: Complete the Tutorial

While not required, it is advised you do the Tutorial before jumping into the game, as the gameplay is unlike any other. Even if you're very familiar with rhythm games like Guitar Hero, you'll still benefit from doing the Tutorial.

Step 1: Complete the Campaign

Before attempting to get the Campaign Rank trophies, I advise you complete the game once to get a feel for all the levels. I highly recommend you do this first playthrough on Casual difficulty, as Beginner is ridiculously easy and it won't really help prepare you for the higher difficulties. If you've had a lot of practice with rhythm games, then feel free to do a higher difficulty first. If you're very confident with rhythm games, you can probably get through X-TREME without too much difficulty whatsoever.

Upon completing Step 1, you will earn:

(B)

Beginner Campaign Complete

(B)
Casual Campaign Complete

You may also earn:

(B)

Mediumcore Campaign Complete

(B)
Pro Campaign Complete

(B)
Tough Campaign Complete

(B)
X-TREME Campaign Complete

Steps 2-3: Earn Astro Admiral on all Beginner and Casual difficulty levels

Now that you've completed the game once and gotten a rough understanding of what needs to be done, it's time to earn the rank of Astro Admiral on the Beginner and Casual difficulties. In order to earn Astro Admiral, you must complete the respective levels without a single mistake or using Retro/Fuel to reverse time. Unlike the Campaign Complete trophies, these Rank trophies do not stack, so you'll still have to earn Astro Admiral on all 10 levels on each difficulty. Try and learn the patterns of the levels, and more than anything, get into the beat of the levels. If you're into the beat, hitting all the notes is easy compared to playing without any rhythm.

Upon completing Step 2-3, you will earn:

(B)

Beginner Continuum Captain

(B)
Beginner Astro Admiral

(B)
Casual Continuum Captain

(B)
Casual Astro Admiral

Steps 4-5: Earn Astro Admiral on all Mediumcore and Pro difficulty levels

After getting Astro Admiral across Beginner and Casual, you'll want to move onto Mediumcore and Pro. Mediumcore is like Casual in that there are three rows of notes, just with more notes. Pro moves onto the fourth row of notes, so fast reflexes will be essential for this. By now you should know the general beat for each level, which will be invaluable knowledge for Tough and X-TREME difficulties.

Upon completing Step 4-5, you will earn:

(B)

Mediumcore Campaign Complete

(B)
Mediumcore Continuum Captain

(B)
Mediumcore Astro Admiral

(B)
Pro Campaign Complete

(B)
Pro Continuum Captain

(B)
Pro Astro Admiral

Step 6: Earn Astro Admiral on all Tough difficulty levels

Next up is Tough difficulty. Like Pro, Tough difficulty has the four rows of notes, except now the notes will be all over the place, so it'll be a lot harder to hit them in rapid succession. If you're using a controller, then I highly advise you try to think about your movements as little as possible, as I found that whenever I thought about what I was doing, my reactions would be delayed and I would start missing notes.

Upon completing Step 6, you will earn:

(B)

Tough Campaign Complete

(B)
Tough Continuum Captain

(B)
Tough Astro Admiral

Step 7: Earn Astro Admiral on all X-TREME difficulty levels

Lastly, we have X-TREME difficulty. X-TREME will introduce the fifth and final row of notes, with notes becoming extremely frequent. If you haven't done so already, learn the patterns, learn the beat and don't think too hard. I have found these three tips to be the most vital of tips in conquering X-TREME. If you're having difficulty adjusting to X-TREME, then you could progress through Challenge Mode and do the X-TREME Challenges as practice.

Upon completing Step 7, you will earn:

(B)

X-TREME Campaign Complete

(B)
X-TREME Continuum Captain

(B)
X-TREME Astro Admiral

Step 8: Complete Challenge Mode and complete all challenges

I have this labelled as Step 8, but the challenges can be done at any point really - I did most of mine between my Casual and Pro difficulty playthroughs. Challenge Mode consists of 130 challenges (labelled A1 through Z5) across all 6 difficulties, and if you're capable of finishing the respective levels on their respective difficulties, then you shouldn't have too many problems. Most of the challenges are redundant, though a select few can be a real challenge if you don't know what you're doing.

Upon completing Step 8, you will earn:

(B)

Challenge Mode Complete

(B)
50 Challenges Completed

(B)
All Challenges Completed

In order to achieve the rank of Continuum Captain, you must complete a level without any mistakes with the use of Retro/Fuel. Retro/Fuel (:circle:) allows you to rewind time (well actually fast forward time, given the game is in reverse), allowing you to get any notes you miss, or dodge any enemy fire you hit. Every time you make a mistake, make sure to use Retro/Fuel to correct your mistake and you should be able to achieve Continuum Captain without too much hassle. You will have to do this for each of the 10 levels for each respective difficulty, as the Campaign Rank trophies do not stack across difficulties (although the Continuum Captain and Astro Admiral trophies per difficulty will stack).

Get an Astro Admiral rank on all the levels in the X-TREME difficulty

In order to achieve the rank of Astro Admiral, you must complete a level without any mistakes and without the use of Retro/Fuel, as well as getting a rating of 'Great' on most notes. You will know if it is 'Great' instead of 'Good' or 'Okay', as you will receive full points for it (which will be either 100, 200, 400, 600, 800 or 1,600 points, depending on your difficulty). This means you will need perfect runs to do this. There's not a huge deal I can say to help with this, other than a few tips that helped me:

  • Listen to the beat: This is perhaps the most vital tip. Listen to and get into the beat and rhythm of the music, otherwise you'll never be able to hit notes in rapid succession, especially on the higher difficulties.
  • Learn the patterns: Knowing when and where the notes and enemy fire will appear for each level and difficulty will help a great deal in clearing a level flawlessly. You may need multiple tries at a level before you've learnt it enough to get through without any mistakes.
  • Don't think too hard: I found that whenever I tried to concentrate or think too hard about what I was doing, I would fall out of tune with the beat and become overwhelmed, especially on Tough and X-TREME. Get into the beat and just go with the flow, don't over think.

Using these tips and trial and error, you will eventually succeed. If you need to practice, then you can use the Practice Mode to do just that: Practice Mode allows you to do any level on any difficulty with infinite HP and Retro/Fuel, so you can refine your skills during certain sections as much as you like. You will have to do this for each of the 10 levels for each respective difficulty, as the Campaign Rank trophies do not stack across difficulties (although the Continuum Captain and Astro Admiral trophies per difficulty will stack).

If you would like to see some videos of each level being completed on X-TREME, please see this thread. Videos are courtesy of Sajiko.

Challenge Mode Trophies:

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1684/DD5.jpg Challenge Mode Complete (B)

Get to the end of the challenge mode map

Challenge Mode is essentially the campaign levels from all six difficulties with certain criteria attached to them. Some are as simple as reaching a certain multiplier, some will be at a faster speed, while some will require you to get 'Great' on every single note without Retro/Fuel (this is especially difficult). To reach the end of the challenge mode map, you simply must advance through the challenges on the main path. You can take the wormholes that you gain access to as you progress, but these will take you to a much higher difficulty, so if you're not prepared for higher difficulties, then just advance along the main path. Once you finish the last challenge along the main path, which is X3: The End?, the trophy will unlock.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1684/3D3.jpg 50 Challenges Completed (B)

Complete 50 challenges in challenge mode

In total, Challenge Mode consists 130 individual challenges, so simply complete 50 of these for the trophy. The challenges get progressively harder, so the first 50 available challenges are recommended for this.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1684/458.jpg All Challenges Completed (B)

Complete all the challenges in challenge mode

For this, you must complete all 130 challenges (labelled A1 through Z5) with any rating. Most are simply unlocked by completing the preceding challenge, though a select few require a rating of S-, S or S+ to unlock the path it leads to. These challenges are:

  • A1: Multiply!

  • D1: That's a Laser of a Different Color

  • F2: Speed Demon

  • H4: The Fuel of Perfection

  • K2: Do a Barrel Roll

  • N2: Tough Streak

  • P3: Fastest

  • P5: Infinite Fuel

  • Q3: Multiplicand

  • S3: Think Fast!
  • X2: Brutal Bullets

S-, S and S+ ratings are for the most part earned by having perfect games with or without the usage of Retro/Fuel, though some challenges will have different conditions for these ratings. Do note that X2: Brutal Bullets is the only one that is required to have an S-, S or S+ rating on, as the paths opened by every other listed challenge are just shortcuts. Thanks to julianportman for pointing this out.

For the X_TREME difficulty: dont look at anything but the beat u have to hit. dont look at whats coming at you, you'll avoid MOST of em by just going for the stuff to hit. just learn the patterns where u have to wait or go around some shots.

but i have 1 question left and didnt wanna grind it out to find out myself, lol

Challenges: X3 - there is a path to a black hole - where does it lead ya to? :)

another question: how do points count for challenges? depending on rank? if so, how many points for S+ to A- ?

"Guitar Hero" + "Braid" + "Child of Eden" = Retro/Grade :)

Thanks for the guide. I'd change the following:

"Challenge Mode consists of over 100 challenges ..."

There are 130 challenges. This info is shown in the PSN Store and on several other game pages, e.g. Retro/Grade Review - IGN

"In order to earn Astro Admiral, you must complete the respective levels without a single mistake or using Retro/Fuel to reverse time..."

In my opinion this isn't correct in general: Although you shouldn't use Retro/Fuel often, I got "Astro Admiral" on two Beginner Chapters even by using one (1) Retro/Fuel.

More important: Completing a level without a single mistake and (in addition) no use of Retro/Fuel will not give you this title automatically. It depends on how exactly you met the notes - if you have too many "Good" or "Okay" instead of "Super", you will not get "Astro Admiral" even with an otherwise perfect run.

I haven't unlocked the X3 path yet, but I assume the black hole just leads to an earlier black hole that is locked. As for the points and ratings, the requirements for specific ratings would be largely different for most challenges, depending on the challenge criteria. S+ is mostly for a "perfect" game, S and S- are mostly for hitting all notes with 'Great' with the usage of Retro/Fuel, whereas the lower ones are for hitting most with 'Great' or whatever else.

I haven't quite reached the end of Challenge Mode, hence the number. Now that there's a confirmed number, I'll change it. As for "Astro Admiral", I've simply written what I thought were the requirements, as that is what I've had to do for "Astro Admiral" everytime. I'll keep changing it until the exact requirements are set in stone. Also, receiving "Astro Admiral" by using Retro/Fuel is only applicable to Beginner difficulty I believe, as I've tested it on Casual, Mediumcore and Pro and never receive "Astro Admiral" by using Retro/Fuel, even if it's only one usage and a perfect run.

A breakdown of the different rankings you can get would be nice. I think I got Captain on every level my first time, with good scores, but I'm not sure what ranks are higher and lower.

I may include them eventually, but I'll need to figure out the exact requirements for each rank before I do that.

It doesn't. Its a forward black hole. You can tell if it goes back or forward by the curve. Its on a secret path so I assume you need to S rank X2. Which is the stage 01 on X-TREME, good luck with that everybody.

All letters have 5 stages.

So the warp goes to the remaining challenge stages. If you scroll to the P's and Q's, you can see the hidden part of the map floating there.

Looks to be 13 more stages. Along with 7 unlockables.

X4, X5, Z1, Z2, Z3, Z4, Z5, and then 5 more stages that you can give a guess what they are, cause I dunno. We ran out of alphabet letters.

yeah the Level 1 and S rank was the reason for me to not grind it out (yet)

at least if there are 130 challenges it would make sense cuz i can count to 118, A1-5 to X1-3 - 12 left for letters and 12 left to get to the 130 ....

has any1 completed "all" 118 challenges yet and can say if u get the last challenge trophy or not?

@Raven, ya i know about rankings, but u get "points" for the leaderboard" how do u score these points?

Oh those points. I know an S+ is worth 12 points, but beyond that I'm not entirely sure. I haven't paid enough attention to my leaderboard score increasing.

What do you mean by a -5 run?

If Z3/Y5 are on Level 4 or 1, then they won't be fun at all :S However T4 is by far the hardest I've come across so far: Get 'Great' on every note (Tough difficulty). You do have Retro/Fuel, but one single mistake can throw you off the beat and deplete half your fuel before you're back in the rhythm, it really sucks :(

Z4 and Z5 are worse xD

Z4. (first try xD)

- all perfect on extreme (u have fuel here too - not lvl4 or 1 tho xD)

Z5: (Level 1) (on my second try)

- Reverse gameplay

- Reverse lines

- no color (al lines are green, so are the dots u have to hit, all dots to avoid are yellow)

- cam zoomed in

could pass Z3 on my 4th attempt tho

-> unlocked the ending, now i have to go back and clean up the remaining 110 challenges xD

by -5 i mean i failed 5 times for a full combo. hit 100% the dots, failed to avoid em 5 times.

Ah okay. I'm not particularly good at Rhythm games, so I've done every challenge along the way to slowly increase in difficulty. Only 15 or so left :)

I forgot my alphabet. :(

Gonna note though, you figure you can do significantly better on challenges that have disco coloring/single coloring, zoom in, reverse screen by getting a video of a regular run of the song and playing to that.

I haven't gone to that extreme. But its an option for when the time comes.

I guess if it was completely synced, you could do that, however if you make a mistake, you won't be aware of it. Also, I somehow doubt there'll be uploads of every level on every difficulty that are synced and of good quality.
