Introduction:

Pure chess was released for the vita one week after the PS3 release. It's almost exactly the same game but there are some differences:

  • There are 5 hidden trophies instead of 6, that's because Piece Collector was hidden on PS3 but on Pure Chess (Vita) it's a normal visible trophy.
  • Two of the hidden trophies are changed. There is a Bronze trophy replaced by a new Bronze trophy and a Silver trophy replaced by a silver trophy. There is no difference in trophy points.

    The two replaced trophies:
    • Double Check (PS3) = Cross Check (Vita)
    • Epaulette Mate (PS3)= Pion Coiffé (Vita)

  • The last difference is step 1, the tutorials. There are some additional tutorials for the Touch Screen on the Vita, after finishing them you will know how to play Pure Chess with the Touch Screen. It's not difficult and can be done quickly.

Step 1 - The Tutorials

Complete all the tutorials. This will give you the Amateur trophy and will explain you all the rules of chess. This can be useful for starters but also for casual chess players like me. Because not every casual chess player knows the "En Passant" rule by example, do the tutorial, it's easy and won't take more than 10 minutes.

Finishing this step will earn you:

  • Amateur (B)

Step 2 - An Exhibition game

Plan an exhibition match against the computer. Make sure that you win the game, because then you will get the trophies Check and Checkmate. Also keep in mind at the end of the game when you're winning, you should start moving your pawn to the eight rank. Replacing your pawn for another piece will also give you Promotion.

Finishing this step will earn you:

  • Check (B)

  • Checkmate (B)

  • Promotion (B)

Step 3 - Bonus Play

I suggest you to start with Bonus Play now but steps 3 and 4 can be switched if you like. You have to solve all 100 situations. The goal is always the same: you must put your opponent checkmate in 1 move, 2 moves, 3 moves, 4 moves or 5 moves. Once you've solved them all the trophy should pop. When you play Bonus Play you will also earn some random trophies if you haven't earned them already. There is one trophy that you will earn with a specific challenge and that's Pion Coiffé (mate in 1- challenge 20). Check the trophy guide for more information.

Finishing this step will earn you:

  • Problem Wizard (S)

  • Pion Coiffé (S)

Step 4 - Offline tournaments

You have to complete the three offline tournaments to receive this trophy. The first one is easy but the other two might be a bit challenging. Just try not to do a stupid move and take your time to think, there are no time limits. You will also get Piece Collector when you play a couple of matches. When you've won the third tournament, Tournament King will pop.

Finishing this will step earn you:

  • Piece Collector (B)

  • Tournament King (S)

Step 5 - Play a game via "Play by mail"

Play a game against somebody who is a part of your friend list and win. As a reward you’ll get the only online trophy in this game. If you have nobody in your Friends List with the game you can search for a partner at the Boosting thread. After you win the match, Pure Correspondence will pop.

Finishing this step will earn you:

  • Pure Correspondence (B)

Step 6 - Remaining trophies

If you followed the guide then you should have earned every trophy except O-O-O, En Passant, Cross Check and Grandmaster. Cross O-O-O, En Passant and Check must both be earned in an Exhibition game otherwise the trophies won’t pop. For more info check the trophy guide.

Finishing this step will earn you:

  • O-O-O (B)

  • En Passant (B)

  • Cross Check (B)

Step 7 - Play, play and play

For Grandmaster you will have to play a lot. The only thing you can do is play as many games as you can. You must reach an ELO of 2500 points or the Grandmaster Pure Chess rating to obtain Grandmaster. For more information you can check the trophy guide.

Finishing this step will earn you:

  • Grandmaster (G)

Win an exhibition game against the computer.

When you are at the menu, go to the top left and start an exhibition game. You simply have to win one game against the computer. I advise you to do this after you've done the tutorials. Just make sure that you will win the game. When it's just a matter of time before you will win, start moving with a pawn to the eight rank which is the last line on the board. Doing this will also give you the Promotion trophy.

Note: You will also receive Check when you put your opponents King at check for the first time.

Complete all the tutorials.

I highly recommend you to do the tutorials before you start with anything else. This will be very easy if you know a bit of chess but some rules can be new for you so to be sure that everything is clear you should do the tutorials. With that out of the way you can start playing the game modes in any order you like.

Win a game of Play By Mail.

Another easy trophy. Just invite somebody from your Friends List for a game and win it. If you have no friends playing Pure chess, you can search for a boosting partner in the Boosting thread. You can put each other checkmate in a minute so this will be a very easy trophy to get.

If you really want to get this out of your way, you can just challenge your second account. Than let your first account win and after you log in you will get the trophy. Thanks to Roughdawg4 for this information!

Capture 100 pieces.

This trophy will come automatically after you play a few games, the only thing you have to do is capture 100 pieces. This shouldn't take more than 5-6 normal games to unlock.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1505/CF3.jpgTournament Kinghttp://www.ps3trophies.org/images/site/icons/trophy_silver.png

Complete Tournament mode on all three difficulties.

For this trophy you have to win the three offline Tournaments in this game. Every Tournament stands for a difficulty. You have to win 4 times in a row to win a Tournament.

Tips for the first tournament:

At this difficulty I advise you to make sure you get your opponents Queen as soon as possible. This will make things a lot easier and because of the low difficulty you can easily get the Queen by only sacrificing one piece, a Horse by example. The computer will almost automatically take anything that it can get with its Queen, without thinking about losing the piece. I also advice you to play with your Queen and lead your attack with it. This will make the four games easier and they will be done quicker. Just pay attention that you don't lose your Queen. I can't give any further tips because this isn't hard and shouldn’t give you any trouble.

For the harder Tournaments (the second and the third) there are no real tips. Everybody has there own style of playing. The only thing you can do is be careful that you don't give pieces away and take your time, there are no time limits. Keep trying and after a while you will get better and better.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1505/FC1.jpgProblem Wizardhttp://www.ps3trophies.org/images/site/icons/trophy_silver.png

Solve 100 mate problems.

This is one of the harder trophies in this game if you try to get it without using the video guide. There are 100 situations divided in 5 categories: mate in 1, mate in 2, mate in 3, mate in 4 and mate in 5. Every category has 20 situations where you have to get a checkmate in 1,2,3,4 or 5 moves. They are fun to play but get harder and harder. If you can;t find one or when you just want to earn the trophy without thinking too much you can use the video guides. Every video shows 20 from the 100 challenges.

Note: When you finish the first 20, you will automatically get Epaulette Mate and Double Check.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1505/0D2.jpgGrandmasterhttp://www.ps3trophies.org/images/site/icons/trophy_gold.png

Achieve an ELO of 2500 or a Grandmaster Pure Chess rating.

First of all we're going to get the "Grandmaster Pure Chess rating" as playing online is a waste of time. Instead of winning, you should play 1 move then offer a draw. In most cases the computer will accept it. If he doesn't then you should keep playing random moves, offering a draw after each. This may give you only half the points of a win but it also takes a lot less time (~15minutes/win with Chess Engine) versus (~1-2minutes/draw). The problem comes when you get to around ~950 rating, because draws will stop netting you points.

From this moment on, you should start (or you can play by yourself, if you're good) using a Chess Engine, inputting the Pure Chess' moves as your own, basically pitting A.I vs A.I. After a fair amount of wins, you'll finally get your much earned trophy.

Secret Trophies

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1505/70C.jpgCross Checkhttp://www.ps3trophies.org/images/site/icons/trophy_bronze.png

Play a check in reply to a check

This could be a very annoying trophy if you want to get it in a normal game. It's much easier to do it like this: Go to Play, Exhibition game, settings. Then choose to play against a player. Now you can just do it by yourself. You are both players now so you can just create a situation where you can get the trophy.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1505/50C.jpgPromotionhttp://www.ps3trophies.org/images/site/icons/trophy_bronze.png

Advance a pawn to the eighth rank in an offline game.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1505/EE6.jpgO-O-Ohttp://www.ps3trophies.org/images/site/icons/trophy_bronze.png

Perform a castling move on the queenside during any full game.

When you have played the Tutorial you will know how to do this. Just start an Exhibition game, move a pawn so you can put away your queen, move another pawn so you can move your bishop. Now move your horse and there should be three empty places between your rook and your king. Now select your king and move him to places to the left.

Note: The trophy will only pop in an exhibition match, not in a tournament game.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1505/4DC.jpgEn Passanthttp://www.ps3trophies.org/images/site/icons/trophy_bronze.png

Perform an En Passant during any full game.

In the Tutorials is explained how to get this. Just move with a pawn at your opponent and stop when there are 2 empty places between your pawn and your opponent’s pawn line. Now you must wait until a pawn moves two places ahead so you can make the "en passant" move.

Note: The trophy will only pop in an exhibition match, not in a tournament game.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1505/A9B.jpgPion coifféhttp://www.ps3trophies.org/images/site/icons/trophy_silver.png

Deliver checkmate with a pawn.

This trophy is a lot easier then it seems, the only thing you have to do is finishing challenge 20, mate in 1. It is a very easy challenge and I got the trophy in this way without even trying.

You can also do this in an exhibition game with 2 players, no CPU. Play against yourself and make sure that a pawn will make the last move but doing that challenge is much easier. Save yourself some time and just finish the challenge.

Update about trophy guide:

So I've put all vita-specific things in it:

-I made piece collector a visible trophy, not by the hidden section

-I replaced the links for clicking boosting thread so you'll go to the vita thread and not the ps3 thread.

-I've put all the trophies in the same row as they were posted on the main site's trophy section

-I changed the names for the 2 new trophies and the information on how you can get pion coiffé.

-In overview I changed the trophy breakdown

Anything else, send me a PM and let me know!

For the GPC-rating you must get 1000 points so this could take a lot of time. But there is a little trick to ern a lot of points in a short period:

Step One: Play PCR 1000 (you could use Der Bringer). Play until Mate in 1

Step Two: :start: save the game, then finish the match.

Step Three: Load saved game and keep pressing :cross: then finish the game.

Step Four: Rinse and repeat.

Bad news, on PSVita it doesn't work... Or I can't do it...

Bad news, on PSVita it doesn't work... Or I can't do it...

I know this is the VITA Guide but I want to get the Guide author's attention since they wrote a guide for both games.

This also doesn't work at all on the PS3 version. I've tried so many times beating PCR 1000 & doing this trick. There is also a notation saying (Info: Viewing and playing a saved match does not affect your profile statistics.) I have the U.S. version that was released this past week , so I think they patched it.

This trophy can't be done with two accounts because the PS Vita can only handle 1 account not 2. And I have tried playing my PS Vita against my PS3 and it will not work.

So, playing against two account is out of the question.

Yeah he probably just copied that from the ps3 guide. Obviously you can challenge a created account on your ps3 since you can have 16 or so active and obviously only 1 on the vita.

I can confirm it works but if they patched it that sucks. Can you not delete the patch or is it built in when you downloaded it?

It works, I'm doing it right now, I've never come across that message though, is it an exhibition match you're playing?

You are correct and not at the same time. No, the Vita can't have multiple accounts. HOWEVER, if you REALLY want to get the trophy without playing a real person, than you can use one Vita to do it. It will be a pain in the butt because changing IDs on the Vita involves deleting all info on your Vita and reloading with a different account. This would have to be done after every move. So it is impractical.

Main reason for my post though is the trophy involving making your pure chess rating to grand master. The guide said that it would work with ANY exhibition game. I played three exhibition games and it stayed at 100. But when I played the first tournament and won, it went from 100 to 106. So it looks like its only tournaments that affect it.

Or is there something I'm missing?
