Introduction

No More Heroes tells the story of Travis Touchdown, an anime fan who lives in the fictional town of Santa Destroy, California. After an unexpected turn of events, Travis finds himself at the bottom of an Assassins' organization. Travis will have to prove himself worthy and defeat 10 other bloodthirsty killers - all with deep stories of their own - to make his way to the top of the assassins league. A ton of video game references, sexual innuendo galore, plus witty and humorous dialogue, what is there not to like about this game? Oh and did I mention Silvia?

This game is VERY import friendly, so I highly suggest you get this if you don't want to wait for the NA release. Definitely a must play for beat-em up fans, especially if you've never played the Wii version. Almost everything is in English, from the voice acting to the menus; you have the option to select both Japanese and English for the voice acting. Unfortunately, the subtitles and NPC dialogue are fixed to Japanese. That said, the game is straight forward enough that it's really easy to pick up and play despite most of the in game stuff being Japanese. You should have no problem earning the platinum by following my guide.

* The JPN version of NMH does not have Move Support. Please take this into account before purchasing.

** The coming NA release however, will support the Move.

Differences from the original Wii version:

  • High-definition graphics
  • Japanese voice-acting
  • "Very Sweet Mode" - Depicts the game's female characters wearing more revealing attire
  • Players are now able to revisit Ranking Battles and cinematics, in the form of nightmares and dreams respectively
  • The Japanese import is censored (blood is replaced with purple mist), but the 2011 NA release will be uncensored

ROADMAP

1) COMPLETE THE GAME FOR THE FIRST TIME

Play on any difficulty you wish, choosing between Sweet (Easy) or Mild (Normal). Quickly get rid of a few of the Combat Related trophies in the opening tutorial, such as You're Pretty Good and Did It Make You Remember the Calgary Hurricanes Era?

Just have fun on your first playthrough, though make sure you to collect each of the five cards in each assassination stage, working towards Otaku's Always Have to Get the Complete Set, Don't They for obtaining all the cards. Don't worry if you missed them though, as they're always available on a NG+ as well.

In addition, don't worry about S-Ranking the boss battles or earning the Boss Related Trophies, you can do them again on your 3rd but optional playthrough on "Very Sweet Mode". Collect all the Lokilov Balls in Santa Destroy, earning you You're a Master. Don't Hestitate, Rush Forward. Ignore purchasing clothing or finding T-Shirts in the dumpsters if you wish, since you'll probably want to save up your money for weapons and upgrades.

This playthrough would also be a good time to earn gold medals in the Side-Jobs, Assassination Gigs, and Free Fight Missions, though it's okay if you don't, as earning a gold medal is much easier on "Very Sweet Mode".

Finishing up your first playthrough will earn you all the Story Related Trophies and if you've met the requirements for the Real Ending, you'll earn This is the Heroes' Paradise.

2) COMPLETE THE GAME A SECOND TIME ON BITTER DIFFICULTY.

Save the "Clear Data" after the credits roll and load it up again now that "Bitter Mode" is selectable. With NG+, everything from your first run is carried over, so even if some bosses may prove to be more difficult, you should have no problem breezing through the game.

Now that you're on a NG+, as soon as you're in Santa Destroy again, collect all the newly placed cards that you have to dig around the city, referring to the map in the guide for their locations. Also, collect the new cards in the UAA Ranked Assassination Missions, in addition to the cards you might've missed your first time through. Collecting all the cards will earn you Otaku's Always Have to Get the Complete Set, Don't They.

3) THIRD (OPTIONAL) PLAYTHROUGH

Play on "Very Sweet Mode". Note that you can do all this on your 2nd playthrough, it's just that a lot of the side missions are easier on this playthrough; this run is completely optional. You might as well play the game a third time since you'll need 5,100 kills for a particular trophy.

Use this final playthrough to watch the female assassin's ridiculously underdressed, but also to clean up Side-Jobs, Assassination Gigs and Free Fight Missions that you have yet to obtain a gold medal in.

If you haven't already done so, grab the Boss Related Trophies via Armchair Mode but also replay each boss fight with the Blood Berry for Did You Have Sweet Dreams?

At this point, the only thing stopping you from your platinum will be purchasing every piece of clothing from Area51 and getting the 5,100 kills. With your fully upgraded Tsubaki-Mk III, keep on replaying Assassination Gig 18. Not only will this get you 150+ kills every 5 mins, but will also grant you a crap load of cash. Keep replaying this mission until you're able to buy everything from the store and have killed your 5,100th enemy to finally unlock your well deserved platinum

Upon beating the game, every time you save the game in the Motel, after you save, you'll be given three options:

  • Return to Santa Destroy
  • View Ending
  • View Real Ending

The requirements you need to fulfill for the "View True Ending" option to appear is to simply buy all the Beam Katanas available. A total of $744,000 LB is needed to purchase all Katanas. There are only three Katanas for you to buy; the Tsubaki, the Tsubaki Mk-II and the Tsubaki Mk-III. The upgrades do NOT count towards the requirements; it's only the Katanas that are required.

Don't fret if you don't have all the Katanas purchased after beating Rank 1, as you can free roam and grind for money after beating the game.

In order to unlock "Bitter" difficulty, you must first beat the game for the first time. Make sure you save the "Clear Data" after the credits, as Bitter is only playable on New Game +'s.

Everything is carried over in your NG+:

  • Beam Katanas you purchased as well as all of their upgrades
  • $ LB from the end of the previous playthrough
  • Training done at Thunder Ryu's Gym
  • Assassination Gigs, Free Fight Missions and Side-Jobs that you unlocked

Finish this game a second time and you will earn this trophy following the credits. Note that watching the Real Ending is NOT required for the trophy to pop.

BOSS RELATED TROPHIES

ドクター・ピースのガード不可の早撃ちをビーム・カタナで打ち返した / Reflect a bullet during the Dr. Peace assassination battle

This trophy is earned in the UAA Ranked 9th battle against Dr. Peace. His attacks consist of firing single bullets at you, firing a huge barrage of bullets at you and firing several powerful bullets at you. When he performs and charges up his Super Bullet Attack, that's when you have the chance to deflect the bullet. Swing your Katana with :triangle: just as the bullet is about to hit you and you should easily deflect it.

Might take a few tries but once you've successfully deflected a bullet, the trophy will pop.

デストロイマンのデストロイキャノンをビーム・カタナで打ち返した / Block Destroyman's Destroy Beam

This trophy is earned in the UAA Ranked 8th battle against Destroyman. His attacks consists of the Destroy POW, a punch to the ground, sending out a red shockwave, the Destroy Cannon, a fast moving ball of energy and the Destroy Spark, where he will extend one of his hands and shoot a short range flurry of sparks. The attack you need to wait for him to perform is the Destroy Beam.

With the Destroy Beam, Destroyman will put his hands on the sides of his head and fire a long range yellow beam. Simply block this attack with :r2: and the trophy will pop when he recharges. Make sure you recharge your Beam Katana as blocking the beam uses a lot of energy!

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/532/51.jpgうとう魔法使いになった? / You're a Magician? (B)

魔法のステッキから回復アイテムを出しました / The Magician's Stick of Recovery was produced

This trophy is earned in the UAA Ranked 4th battle against Harvey. The trophy requires you to change your Katana into one of those magician wands from Travis' favorite anime show. How? Early on in the fight is when Harvey swings his weapon at you the most. Try your best to time your swings with his, hopefully resulting in a weapons clash. Purposely lose the clash and he'll transform your Katana into a magician girl wand. During this very brief window of opportunity with your transformed weapon, try your best to land a hit on Harvey.

Just holding the transformed Katana isn't enough, you must hit him with it for the trophy to unlock. Do it properly and you'll earn yourself another "Ding!"

バッドガールがバッティングで飛ばしてくるクローン人間をビーム・カタナで打ち返した / Use your Beam Katana to reflect a human clone back at Bad Girl

This trophy is earned in the UAA Ranked 2nd battle, against Bad Girl. Similar to the trophy with Dr. Peace, rather than reflecting a bullet, you're reflecting one of her human clones. Fight her as usual, the same way you've been doing with previous battles and get her to half health.

Once you wipe away half of her health she will run over to her batting station and slam her underlings at you. Counter this by swinging your Katana while they are in the air (the hit window is small!) with :triangle: and you'll enter a weapon clash. Twirl the crap outta the :rs:, and you'll bat them right back at Bad Girl to damage her and stop the attack.

Do this successfully and the trophy will unlock.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/532/49.jpg師匠超えちゃった? / You Surpassed Your Master? (B)

ダメージを受けることなく、ランキングステージをクリアした / Ranking stage was cleared without receiving damage

The requirements for this trophy includes both the lead up to the Boss Battle and also the Boss Battle itself. You are not allowed to receive any damage.

The easiest way to earn this is on the 5th UAA Fight, against Letz Shake. The entire stage is a single grey corridor and the most resistance you ever face are pairs of Beam Katana wielding Helghast wannabes. Playing conservatively and using the Lovikov Skill, "Memory of Demon" (Lock on, :r2:+:triangle: for a leaping slash) and "Memory of White" (Lock on, hit :r2:+:square: for a Downed Kill at any range) you can easily clear all 9 enemies in this stage without taking a hit. The boss will, as NMH fans know, be absolutely zero issue. Thanks again goes to Malice_Mizer for the tip.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/532/22.jpgSはシルヴィアのSなのよ 知ってた? / The S stands for Silvia, You Know? (S)

すべてのランキング戦でSランクを取得した / Earn an "S" rank on every UAA Rank Assassination mission

This requires you to earn an S Rank on every UAA Rank Assassination. This must be earned when you're playing the Story Mode, so it is suggested you attempt this trophy at least on a second playthrough on NG+, with the Tsubaki Mk-III fully upgraded.

At the end of each Ranked Fight, you will be ranked on two things, Time (how fast you completed the level) and Damage (how much health you've lost, the less damage you take, the higher the rank). You are required to earn both an S Rank on both Time and Damage. Fortunately, the Ranks you've obtained are cumulative. S Ranks you've obtained on previous playthroughs (provided you've been starting each new game through your "Clear Data") are carried to the next.

Earn a S Rank in both categories for each boss fight, excluding the boss from the Real Ending and the trophy will pop. If you're having trouble, consider attempting this on "Very Sweet Mode".

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/532/42.jpgいい夢見れた? / Did You Have Sweet Dreams? (B)

“悪夢のリターンマッチ”にBLOODBERRYで全勝した / Defeat all the UAA rank fights without losing using only the Bloodberry Katana

As the name of the trophy suggests, this can only be earned in Armchair Mode in your Motel, unlocked after beating the game once and playing a NG+ on your "Clear Data"; using the Blood Berry in each fight in the Story Mode doesn't work.

Replay each boss fight with the Blood Berry, including the boss from the Real Ending (despite not using the Blood Berry), and the trophy will unlock. Let Shake and Speed Buster are not selectable in Armchair Mode and therefore do not count towards the trophy (can you guess why?). Contrary to what the trophy description says, you are allowed to died, so just win the rematches.

COMBAT RELATED TROPHIES

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/532/44.jpgやるじゃない / You're Pretty Good (B)

ノーダメージで敵を倒し続け、30チェーンを突破した / Defeat 30 enemies without taking any damage

This is easily obtainable right from the start in the opening tutorial, when you're taught the controls. When you're required to perform Charged Slashes (Hold) :triangle: or :square:, where six guys drop down waiting for you to perform the move, ignore the tutorial. Instead, use this time to get a 30 kill chain for the trophy. The game won't continue until you perform a Charged Slash and enemies will keep respawning until you do.

The trophy will unlock upon killing the 30th enemy, provided you haven't gotten hit yet.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/532/47.jpgカルガリー時代の日々を思い出した? / Did It Make You Remember the Calgary Hurricanes Era? (B)

プロレス技を10回連続で成功させた / Execute 10 successful wrestling moves in a row

Wrestling moves are performed after stunning an enemy with a Beat Attack :cross: or :circle:, or by performing a long combo with a Beam Katana. Walk up to the stunned enemy and push the :r2: button to initiate a grab and follow the on screen prompt to do a wrestling move; the left arrow corresponds to the :ls:, and the right one corresponds to the :rs:. Move them in their respective directions at the same time to perform the wrestling move.

Occasionally you will need to perform a second on screen prompt to finish up the wrestling move. Wrestling Moves almost always kill enemies, or leaves them downed so you can perform a Down Attack :r2:+:square:.

Use them whenever the opportunity presents itself, perform 10 wrestling moves in a row without messing up the on screen prompts and the trophy will unlock.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/532/48.jpgなんか剣の達人みたい / Like a Master Swordsman (B)

ジャストガードを5回連続で成功させた / Execute 5 successful guard attacks in a row

Guard Attack: :r2:, just before getting hit from an enemy. A successful guard attack is indicated by a white flash on your Katana

A really easy way to earn this trophy is in the 9th Ranked Match against Dr. Peace, the first half of the stage leading up to the boss. The enemies that throw flaming baseballs are perfect for this trophy. When you first encounter them, leave one of them alive but defeat the other enemies. Get to a good distance when he's the only one left, then whenever he throws a flaming ball at you hit the :l2: button when it gets close enough. If you do it right, you'll reflect the ball and a big thin circle will appear on Travis' Katana. Do this 5 times successfully in a row and you'll the trophy will unlock.

Note, that you can't be locked on to do this, you have to be in regular combat mode. Thanks goes to Malice_Mizer for this method.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/532/23.jpg殺り慣れてきたわね / You've Gotten Used to Killing, Huh (B)

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/532/25.jpg殺りまくり! 最高よ、トラヴィス!!/ It's a Massacre! You're the Best, Travis!! (G)

あらゆる手段で5100体のザコエネミーを倒した / Defeat 5100 enemies

The only trophy in the entire game that really requires grinding, this will most likely be the last trophy you need before getting the platinum. This trophy is cumulative, so kills you've logged on previous playthroughs are carried to the next, again provided you've been loading through your "Clear Data".

A good way to grind kills is by replaying Assassination Gig 18. You will fight in the Gold Town alley for three minutes and enemies will infinitely respawn. Come into this mission with a Tsubaki Mk-II fully upgraded and simply kill until the time is up. Spamming the Lovikov Skills, :r2:+:triangle: and :r2:+:square: and you'll easily amass 150+ kills.

Kill your 5,100th enemy and the trophy will unlock. Coincidentally, this is also the best way to earn money in the game.

Cards are all available for you to view in your Motel room under the "Cards" option. Cards range from pictures of wrestling masks, to concept arts of the characters, assassins and previous concepts for NMH. There are a total of 150 cards available for you to collect.

Any cards you missed on your first playthrough, you can collect on your second playthrough as they appear on your NG+, so it is essentially "impossible" to miss a card. As a note however, make sure you've gotten five cards for each boss level before moving on to avoid replaying the game another time.

  • Cards 001 - 050 are available on your first playthrough, five in each boss level.
  • Cards 051 - 090 and 136 - 147 are available on your NG+ , with an additional three to seven cards in each boss level.
  • Cards 91 - 135 and 148 - 150 are found through digging around Santa Destroy, indicated by pink dots. Please refer to the map below for their locations, via gamer-seven:

All of the clothing you can dress up on Travis can be either found in your closet, bought from Area51

after ranking up or found in the various dumpsters near buildings in Santa Destroy. There's really no point in listing each and every piece of clothing as all you have to do is purchase them.

ロビィコフのテクニックを皆伝した / Learn all techniques from Randal Lovikov

You meet Randal Lovikov, the Russian drunk, in a local bar in Santa Destroy after defeating Rank 8, Shinobu. The bar is indicated by a glass of beer on your map. When you first meet him he will tell you to go find a bunch of Lovikov Balls scattered around Santa Destroy in order to master his techniques. Orange and pink dots will appear on your map after speaking with him. Lovikov Balls are orange, pink dots are buried treasure.

There are a total of 49 Lovikov Balls scattered around town and for every 7 you bring to Lovikov, he'll teach you a new technique. The techniques are as follows:

  • Memory of Three - Displays enemy positions on mini-map
  • Memory of Demon - Allows a "jumping slash attack" to be performed, :r2:+:triangle:
  • Memory of Child - Allows a "dash" to be performed, via :cross:

Before every ranked fight you will find a Wrestling Mask on the ground, usually beside the save point of the level. You learn a new wrestling move every time you pick these up, which are moves you can then perform in the immediate upcoming boss for massive damage.

Wrestling moves are also learned through videos purchased from Beef Head Video, indicated by an orange logo with bull horns, accessible only after you defeat Shinobu. Every time you purchase a video, you must go back to the Motel and view it on the TV to learn it. Videos from Beef Head are:

MISCELLANEOUS TROPHIES

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/532/50.jpgもうトイレに住んじゃえば? / Why Don't You Just Live In the Toilet? (B)

すべてのトイレを使用した / Save at every saving point

Saving the game in NMH, is through using the toilet. Enter the bathroom and Travis will do his business on the toilet, coincidentally also saving the game. Every bathroom serves as a save

point and there is always one available before each boss fight.

Use every save point, including the one in the Motel and the trophy will unlock when Travis takes a dump at the last save point.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/532/43.jpgそのコーデ ドン引きでしょ… / Those Clothes... You're Such a Loser (B)

コスチュームをビザールジェリー系で統一した / Dress Travis up like his favorite anime character

To earn this trophy, you will need to dress Travis up in pink in his favorite anime attire, "Pure White Lover Bizarre Jelly". The clothes you need to put on him are:

  • Sunglasses 005 - Peony (LB$19,800)
  • Jacket 010 - Bizarre Jelly (LB$258,000, after clearing Rank 2)
  • T-Shirt 002 - Bizarre Jelly (already available)
  • Jeans 012 - Pure White Lover (LB$108,800, after clearing Rank 2)
  • Belt 010 - Pink Bomb (LB$24,800, after clearing Rank 2)

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/532/38.jpg随分 お盛んみたいね / Aren't You Popular (B)

すべてのちょいエロコスチュームを堪能した / While playing on Very Sweet Mode watch all five female characters in their new erotic costumes.

Complete the game once to unlock "Very Sweet Mode", which allows you to view all the female assassins in scantily clad clothing.

You can either replay the game a third time on "Very Sweet Mode" and view the cutscenes that way, or select "Very Sweet Mode" upon loading up your "Clear Data", finish the first Ranked fight and go back to the Motel and watch JEANE ep. 1 in the Armchair in your Motel, under Dream mode. The trophy pops strangely in the middle of the cutscene, which I'm assuming is because the game believes you've watched every cutscene until that point and gives you the trophy as if you've watched the entire thing. Thanks to Malice_Mizer for this method.

Do this on either method and the trophy will unlock.

サンタデストロイ内の器物を510個破壊した / While riding motorcycle destroy 510 objects

Controls for your Bike, Schpeltiger:

Calling Your Bike: Press :square:, when you're in Santa Destroy

Accelerate: :r2:

Brake/Reverse: :l2:, hitting the brakes while in motion to drift

Boost: :cross:, amount of Boost available indicated by a Gauge on the right hand side of the screen

Similar to the other trophy, this one however doesn't require you to do it in one boost. Simply drive around Santa Destroy knocking down trees, mailboxes and any other form of destroyable object and the trophy will unlock after you knock down the 510th.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/532/45.jpgデストロイ超特急 フルスロットル! / Destroy, Super Express Full Throttle! (B)

バイクのブースターを切らさずに、サンタデストロイ内の器物を51個破壊した / While using turbo on your motorcycle destroy 51 containers

The trophy requires that you destroy 51 destroyable objects around Santa Destroy in a single boost charge. This is much easier than it sounds because your Boost Gauge can be recharged by drifting. A good place to start to earn this trophy is to start at the Bike Jump (where you do Side-Job 9) and follow the shoreline knocking down the trees all in a row until you reach the end of the shore. Drift around, knocking down objects and trees and whatever you can find from this point on.

Knock down 51 objects in one boost, making sure to recharge your boost via drifts and the trophy will pop.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/532/46.jpgあっちの運転も下手そうね / He's Not a Very Good Driver, Either (B)

バイクに乗って、サンタデストロイ内の通行人と51回ニアミスした / While on your motorcycle get 51 near misses

Near misses are done by "hitting" pedestrians found throughout Santa Destroy. This is easy to accomplish but takes a bit longer since pedestrians hardly ever spawn. Drive around town and whenever you see a pedestrian, drive up really close to them and they'll stumble trying to regain their balance, followed by a grunt, which counts as a "near miss".

Do this 51 times, doesn't have to be in row and the trophy will unlock.

Why is the number 51 constantly used? Suda 51, duh.

nice guide, i was just about to import it pretty much because of ur guide. luckily i checked first, and i noticed that the japanese import doesnt have move support, which would be a major minus for me, as i have a move that is desperately in need of a good game.

i would put that the japanese import doesnt feature move support if it indeed doesnt, as i didnt see it in the part about it being a very import-friendly game,

then again i might consider stacking the trophies, so i think i may end up importing anyway if this game is as good as killer 7

My definition of import friendly means that you'll be able to understand the game even though its developed in another language .

Anywho, I'll add to the guide that the Japanese title does not have Move support.

Hi guys, I'va a problem, I buy and watch all 4 vhs for the trophy:

"トラヴィス! オマエの投げは最高だ! / Travis! Your Throws Are the Best!"

but the trophy doesn't pop-up! Is this a glitch?

(my english is a glitch :) )

You learn the very final wrestling move once you enter the fight with the boss from the real ending, it should pop about 10 seconds into this fight. :)

I had the same issues as you, I think the :r2: is an error in the guide as it didn't really do anything for me. After blocking millions of beams with :l2: it still didn't pop for me so I tried holding :triangle: and use a charge attack the next time he used it. After preparing for a charge attack he shot a blue energy ball instead of the beam so I just unleashed my charge attack onto him in order to not get damage. The charge attack cut through his energy ball and hit him, after this point the trophy randomly popped for me even though it shouldn't have.

Long story short, I've got no idea how to actually do it, I managed to get it by cutting through his blue energyball with a charged :triangle: attack and hit him. I hope it works out for you aswell :D

Does anyone know how much damage you can take for each mission and still get an S ranking? Also I know the S ranks carry over per playthrough but can I redo them in the nightmares?

The maximum amount of damage you can take is 25%.

You cannot do this in nightmare mode unfortunately. I personally did a third playthrough on very sweet mode for this, the only mission that can be a pain is the Holly Summers mission in my opinion. It's easy to avoid damage when you're at the boss, but the goons with the guns are the problem. I recommend that you fully upgrade your Tsubaki III , you won't lose any energy while blocking bullets this way :D

Yes this is the mission I keep having trouble in. I wish you could see how much damage you've taken without having to beat it. I keep getting like 35% and its pissing me off. I don't see how people voted this a 4/10 plat difficulty.

Edit: I just beat with 29% damage and still got an S

Forgive me if the following is a bit unclear, English isn't my mother language :(

A very easy place to lose health is right at the start with 2 gunmen spawning near you, there's nothing that you can do about them apart from trying to get rid of them quickly.

When you've dealt with them and move on to the other side of the starting area, some gunmen and people with close-combat weapons will appear from the sand. If there are any gunmen run back to where you spawn and "take cover" behind the concrete stairs. One attacker will move towards you slowly and you can take him out with ease without getting damaged much. You can repeat this for most of the goons in the starting area.

The only other dangerous thing in this mission would be the 3 handgun goons that drop out of the helicopter. They will spawn once all the others have been taken out in an area so you can predict when they will spawn. Try to move to their spawnpoint just after you finish the last guy in the area and deal with them as soon as possible.

The final thing would be to make an extra save at the toilet if you're sure that you've not taken much damage. If you were to get hit by Holly a few times and lose your S rank because of this you can always reload this save and try to finish her while taking the least amount of damage possible, just make sure that you don't save it over your main save.
