Weapon Upgrading Guide

ShadowAFC

Recommended Posts

Welcome to my comprehensive Weapon Upgrading guide for NIER. The details listed within this guide will helpfully help you achieve Upgrade Apprentice, Reform Specialist, Forging Master and of course, The Final Verse.

The first section of this guide contains an overview, posts 2-4 detail where every Material required for the trophy can be found and the total number required. The final section lists all Weapons, their location, price and each material required for upgrades.

There are thirty weapons in total which require full upgrades for the Platinum, this does not include DLC weapons. Each weapon requires three separate upgrades, with each upgrade needing 1-3 different raw materials in various quantities. Weapons can only be upgraded at the Two Brother’s Weaponry near the Junk Heap, with each upgrade also costing 1,000 Gold in addition to the raw materials required. The first upgrades for Nameless Blade & Iron Will are free as they occur as part of the story, although you still need to gather the materials. Once you begin part 2, you will be unable to upgrade your weapons for a short while.

Words from the ‘mah’ group increase the item drop rate percentage, making rarer items a little bit easier to obtain. You can apply collected words to your weapons and magic by selecting Word Edit List within Grimoire Weiss. Playing on hard also increases the item drop rate, but the difference is minimal.

Enemies may drop orbs, green or yellow, once they are defeated. Yellow orbs contain rare items, so you should rush to them as soon as they drop or they will disappear.

When suicide jumping to make a gathering point spawn, change the difficulty to hard via the options in the main menu screen. When you die and choose to continue, your health won't refill meaning less jumping required.

Area Overview

Prologue:

The Prologue is the very first part of the game, which can be returned to after completing the quest 'A Magical Stone' after completing all pieces of the Shadowlord's Key. Enemies in the Prologue can be continually farmed for items such as Dented Metal Bat, Broken Wristwatch and either of the three machine by talking to the Fortune Teller at the Forest of Myth again.

Barren Temple:

Barren Temple can be found by traveling through the sandstorm near Facade or using the fountains to fast travel after activating a minimum of two. It will be your go-to spot for rare materials that can only be dug up, although the annoyingly common Clay is the most present item here. You'll find many necessary items while searching for Pyrite in the temple. Taking advantage of the magic room is also the very best way to obtain any of the three machines.

Junk Heap:

Anybody order some junk? Yeah, that's what most of the stuff you'll be finding here. On a massive plus note though, there is a room to the far north on level B2 that contains many crates, crates that drop the rare items, Amber, Fluorite & Damascus Steel. Damascus Steel is not needed, but several Amber and many more Fluorite are required.

The Aerie:

There is only one place to gather materials in the Aerie, but its an important one. On the catwalk under the chief's house is a glowing gathering point and the only place to obtain Eagle Egg's. Now, why anyone would need an egg to upgrade a weapon is quite frankly beyond me. While searching for Eagle Egg's you'll find yourself a whole load of crap and Ores, plus some Broken Pottery, if you're lucky.

After a certain event in the story, the Aerie will no longer be accessible. Make sure you have all the items you need before completing the Aerie in part 2 to prevent additional playthroughs as you will be unable to return.

DLC:

One area in particular is VERY productive for quite a few items: Amber, Damascus Steel, Gold Ore, Silver Ore, Copper Ore, Iron Ore, Crystals, Eagle Eggs, Rusty Clumps, Meteorites, Pyrite, Titanium Alloy, Moldavite, and Fluorite.

You have to fight through the first two areas first, then you will unlock the third door. This is the door you need. There are about 5 areas inside the door, first a dock area that will drop nothing particularly useful, second is the library, and again nothing great will drop here, but the third area is where you are looking. The area in question turns into another of the "top view" areas, full of boxes. These boxes can be smashed up and the rare items will basically fall into your pockets. The first area you'll find lots of Rusted Clumps, and perhaps a Crystal and one of the "ite's". The second part will be a round room just clearing out enemies. The next section will be where the majority of your items will be found, a long bridge covered in boxes to smash, a few enemies in between. Here's where the even rarer things will appear. At one point I played through and got 1 eagle egg during 3 subsequent playthroughs.

The best part? After you have smashed the last box on the bridge, if you've already finished the missions completely (a 50,000 gold reward awaits, and a new weapon I seem to remember, but I might be wrong), you can simply kill yourself by leaping off the bridge a few times, and when you return to Nier's house you'll have retained all the items, then you can jump right back in and go for another run.

Raw Materials - Part 1

Amber(6)

In the Junk Heap, level B2, blow up the barrier on the left and keep heading north to enter a big room. In this room there are a large number of crates, every time you smash a crate you have a small chance of obtaining Amber, Fluorite or Damascus Steel. Mind the holes!

Black Pearl(15)

Black Pearls can only be found at gathering points on the Seafront Beach. If you prefer using a high brightness, make sure to turn it down or it will be difficult to spot the gathering points.

Broken Antennea(37)

A common drop from the grey robots in the Junk Heap.

Broken Arm(49)

A common drop from the grey robots in the Junk Heap, but not as common as Broken Antenna’s.

Broken Battery(5)

A common drop from the flying robots in the Junk Heap.

Broken Earring(4)

A rare drop from Shaman shades, the ones that unleash a barrage of magic located on the Northern Plains and the top of the Lost Shrine. See Forlorn Necklace for more details.

Broken Lens(5)

An uncommon drop from the grey robots in the Junk Heap. It can also be brought from The Two Brother’s Weaponry for 1,100 Gold.

Broken Motor(11)

A common drop from the flying robots in the Junk Heap.

Broken Pottery(2)

A rare find from the gathering point on the path to the Aerie and the eagle egg gathering point under the Aerie chief’s house.

Broken Saw(4)

Rare drop from the small shades on the Northern Plains, also dropped from the small hat-wearing shades at Southern Plains.

Broken Wristwatch(11)

Rare drop from the heavily-armoured shades roaming around the Southern Plains, Shadowlord’s Castle and the Prologue after completing the quest, A Magical Stone.

Tip from Cetra:

Broken Wristwatches are harder to collect. But if you are strong enough to destroy the greater armored shades in the Southern Plains with one hit then it is okay. And you should only do the Southern Plains if there are many greater armored shades. And that means when the sun is shining and you can see some grey clouds or some brown-orange clouds. If the air is completely covered with grey clouds only three of the greater armored shades spawn and more of the smaller armored ones with the wok-lke helmet. And you don't need those. At least not really.

Clay(18)

Clay can be found at gathering points around the world, most commonly at Barren Temple. It can also be purchased from Facade for 800 Gold.

Complex Machine(8)

Dropped from large shades, rarer than simple machine, but more common than elaborate machine.

  • An easy way to obtain several machines quickly is inside the Barren Temple, although if you’ve cleared all the rooms again, the chance has gone. One of the rooms forbids the use of magic, in this room is a rather large shade and a few medium sized shades. The larger shade can deal some serious damage in earlier playthrough even on easy, so watch yourself! Completely ignore the other shades and only focus on the large shade. Once it’s dead, pick up the item and use magic to reset the room, rinse and repeat.

  • Once you obtain all the key pieces, go to the lost shrine and you will face two giant enemies as you go up the tower. Just keep exiting and entering the building to make them respawn.

  • Inbetween the Village and the Seafront, a large Shade that drops machines will randomly appear. The drop rate i received and it's disappearance in part two makes this a poor spot for farming machines, but a spot nonetheless.

Copper Ore(88)

Copper Ore’s can be found at gathering points around the world. They can also be purchased from The Two Brother’s Weaponry for 480 Gold.

Crystal(8)

Crystals can be found at gathering points around the Desert and Barren Temple. They can also be purchased from Facade for 2,400 Gold.

Dented Metal Bat(21)

A rare drop from small shades. A good place to collect them is the Underground Laboratory. There is a blue grey room with six pillars. The room is split in two smaller rooms and in one of them a great amount of unarmored small shades spawn. They have the Dented Metal Bat as one of their rare item drops. Clear this room, exit it and revisit it again and soon you will have all your Dented Metal Bats.

Other locations include Northern Plains, Shadowlord’s Castle and the Prologue after completing the quest, A Magical Stone.

Eagle Egg(4)

Found at the gathering point in the Aerie along with many useless and common materials. If you fail to obtain one, continually jump off the catwalk until you die. Once revived, the gathering point should respawn. After receiving an Eagle Egg, save your game as users have reported it disappearing from their inventory after jumping down again. Before attempting the above strategy, change the difficulty to hard in the main menu as your health will not refill when you die meaning less jumping.

Elaborate Machine(5)

Dropped from large shades, the rarest of the three machines.

• Inbetween the Village and the Seafront, a large Shade that drops machines will randomly appear. The drop rate i received and it's disappearance in part two makes this a poor spot for farming machines, but a spot nonetheless.

Fluorite(18)

  • In the Junk Heap, level B2, blow up the barrier on the left and keep heading north to enter a big room. In the room there are a large number of crates, every time you smash a crate you have a small chance of obtaining Amber, Fluorite or Damascus Steel. Fluorite can also be found at gathering points at Barren Temple.

  • Complete the 'Disturbing the Sleep of Kings' quest, this will make the bridge leading to the boss room accessible again. On the bridge there are 2 gathering spots. Harvest the items and then continually jump off the bridge until you die, select continue at the game over screen. When you respawn 1 or 2 of the gathering points will have also respawned, if they haven't suicide jump again. Once you obtain Fluorite, wait a few seconds and then suicide jump or they may lose it. Before attempting the above strategy, change the difficulty to hard in the main menu as your health will not refill when you die meaning less jumping.

  • At the beginning of the Barren Temple there are a few gathering points. One in the room on the right, one by some rocks near the room on the left and one in the room on the left. If you travel further within the temple, you'll come across more gathering points before reaching the bridge. Collect the items and then exit the temple. When you re-enter none, some or all of the gathering points will have respawned.

Raw Materials - Part 2

Forlorn Necklace(4)

A rare drop from Shaman shades, the ones that unleash a barrage of magic located on the Northern Plains and the top of the Lost Shrine.

  • After collecting all parts of the key, there will be one shaman and two armoured shades two ladders up from the boss room, returning to the boss room and exiting will cause them to respawn.

  • Another place to farm for Forlorn Necklaces is at Northern Plains, although they only appear when the weather is very cloudy. There will be six in total, one fighting the boar, one on the ledge above the boar(sometimes fighting the boar as well), one under the big bridge, one by the wooden bridge, one on the village side of the plains and one near the Junk Heap Bridge. I managed to get two in a row here! See the following video for details, thanks to gtasthehunter.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nBf5hQbUNBA

Giant Egg(6)

Giant Eggs can only be found at gathering spots around the village, search there regularly.

Gold Ore(22)

The only ore that cannot be brought from The Two Brother's Weaponry. Can be found at gathering points at Barren Temple, Desert & The Aerie.

Iron Ore(199)

Iron can be found at gathering points all over the world or purchased from The Two Brother's Weaponry for 1,000 Gold.

Large Gear(6)

A rare drop from the grey robots in the Junk Heap.

Machine Oil(5)

A rare drop from the flying robots in the Junk Heap.

Memory Alloy(8)

A rare drop from the P-33 Drones in the Junk Heap, level B2. There are only four of these robots(that I know of) in B2, so this will likely take a lot of grinding.

An efficient way to obtain Memory Alloy is to skip the first robot on floor B2, take the rail cart and defeat the robot in the next room. If you don't receive a Memory Alloy, let the remaining robots kill you. You'll respawn right outside the room. Repeat this strategy until you obtain an Alloy. After receiving one, go ahead to the next room with two P-33 Drones. Kill them both, if you don't receive an Alloy, die on purpose. Repeat until you obtain another Alloy.

Metal Piercing(4)

A rare drop from the flying shades in the desert, before these shades will even appear you must complete Facade in part two. There will then be three flying shades in the desert, but they will not appear until you trigger them, by stepping on a certain area. Not far from the entrance to Facade there will be three shades, the first flying shade will pop out from the ground to the left of them, watch out for scorpions! To the north, near the stairs leading to the fast travel boat, there will be another bunch of shades. Once again, the flying shade will pop out somewhere to the left, you wont even have to worry about scorpions this time. The final flying shade will appear as soon as you enter the sandstorm, you'll be appear to faintly see it in the distance. Since i've most likely confused the hell out of you by now, refer to the following video from PhDF1:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=puOoZoTBHtM

Meteorite(5)

Meteorite can be found at gathering points around the Desert and Barren Temple.

Once you obtain Meteorite, wait a few seconds and then suicide jump or you may lose it.

Moldavite(8)

Moldavite can be purchased at Seafront for a whooping 5,000 Gold or found at gathering points around the Desert and Barren Temple.

Once you obtain Moldavite, wait a few seconds and then suicide jump or you may lose it.

Mysterious Switch(9)

Uncommon drop from the flying robots at the Junk Heap.

Natural Rubber(1)

Can be found at gathering points at Southern Plains or brought at Seafront for 700 Gold.

Pearl(1)

Found at gathering points on Seafront beach or brought at Seafront for 3,000 Gold.

Pyrite(14)

Pyrite can be found around gathering points in the Desert and Barren Temple.

  • Complete the 'Disturbing the Sleep of Kings' quest, this will make the bridge leading to the boss room accessible again. On the bridge there are 2 gathering spots. Harvest the items and then continuously walk through the gate. The gathering spots will randomly shine.

Rusted Clump(9)

Found while fishing. Use Lure at the Desert or Northern Plains for the best odds, expect to catch lots of other junk in the meantime.

Rusty Bucket(10)

A piece of junk found while fishing, use Lure at the Desert or Northern Plains for the best odds.

Rusty Kitchen Knife(9)

A rare drop from small shades roaming around the Northern Plains. Also dropped from the small hat wearing shades in Southern Plains & Shadowlord's Castle.

Scorpion Claw(10)

Scorpions Claws are the most common drop from Scorpions, which can only be found in the desert. They spend most of the time under the sand and will only jump up and attempt to poison you once you are really close, be careful!

Silver Ore(121)

Silver Ores can be found at gathering points all over the world or brought from The Two Brother's Weaponry for 1,500 Gold.

Simple Machine(6)

Dropped from large shades, the most common of the three machines.

  • An easy way to obtain several machines quickly is inside the Barren Temple, although if you’ve cleared all the rooms again, the chance has gone. One of the rooms forbids the use of magic, in this room is a rather large shade and a few medium sized shades. • Inbetween the Village and the Seafront, a large Shade that drops machines will randomly appear. The drop rate i received and it's disappearance in part two makes this a poor spot for farming machines, but a spot nonetheless.

Stopped Clock(3)

A rare drop found from the sword-wielding shades in The Lost Shrine early on in the game and the Underground Lab.

An easy way to obtain Stopped Clocks without saving and reloading or exiting the floor is in the last room of floor B2 in the Underground Facility. Don't open any doors other than the one containing three Sword-wielding Shades. Walk back towards the previous floor(You don't actually have to exit) and then turn around and go back to the room with the Sword-wielding Shades, they will have respawned. The following video by gtashunter shows how it's done.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a6kMFpWD3sk

A common drop from the yellow robots in The Junk Heap or brought from The Two Brother's Weaponry for 900 Gold.

Hi

In regards to the DLC and the rare items, it is true that one area in particular is VERY productive for quite a few items: Amber, Damascus Steel, Gold Ore, Silver Ore, Copper Ore, Iron Ore, Crystals, Eagle Eggs, Rusty Clumps, Meteorites, Pyrite, Titanium Alloy, Moldavite, and Fluorite.

You have the fight through the first two areas first, then you will unlock the third door.

I've collected ALOT of items by doing that myself about 15 times now, it takes about 10 minutes to do a full cycle (playing until the bridge, then suicide) and you'll have lots of the rare items.

Damascus Steel seems the least common in there, I've had it about 5 times out of the roughly 15 playthroughs. But it's there.

Hope that helps someone.

There is another method for obtaining Simple, Complex and Elaborate machines.

Once you obtain all the key pieces, go to the lost shrine and you will face two giant enemies as you go up the tower. Just keep existing and entering the building to make them respawn.

I hope that helps ;)

Any advice regarding difficulty levels? On easy everything is a one shot but I hear the drop rates are reduced. Does anyone notice a big difference in rare drops on a harder difficulty?

According to NIER's producer, playing the game on Hard increases drop rates by a certain degree but some people never see any improvement so your mileage may vary.

I tried it on my completion of NieR Replicant and on some materials I saw a clear difference in time spent gathering them from Gestalt but on others I saw little to no improvement. You can try it, it may work, but it may not. Put on your +30% Drop Rate word, have a high level, grab something insanely strong like a Phoenix Spear or that DLC sword at max level which has 999 Attack and try it.

Hard is supposed to increases drop rates, but it appears to be very minimal and is still massively based on luck. While playing on hard it took about 100 kills on the same Shaman until i got a Forlorn Necklace. When i was wandering around the Northern Plains on easy, i actually got two in a row :o_O:

Complex Machine(8)

Option 1: Dropped from large shades, rarer than simple machine, but more common than elaborate machine. An easy way to obtain several machines quickly is inside the Barren Temple, although if you’ve cleared all the rooms again, the chance has gone.

Option 2: Once you obtain all the key pieces, go to the lost shrine and you will face two giant enemies as you go up the tower. Just keep exiting and entering the building to make them respawn.

Got my first and an Elaborate from large shade between Village and Seafront

Titanium Alloy(24)

A rare drop from the yellow robots in The Junk Heap, also a common drop from the large robots, also found in The Junk Heap.

You probably mean the RED robots..Not YELLOW

It's a pretty poor spot to farm them, but i'll still add it.

Yes, yes, i do. Wait..no?

Depends, if youre doing the sidequests you will run back and forth Village - Seafront

No harm if you start killing them when youre already there..Not like i force spawn them and farm :D

But if youre going for speedrun they are such a waste of time...

I farmed over 20 Alloys now all dropped from the red robots

Junk Heap B1 (Part 1) just after first elevator is one yellow bot

3 reds and just down path 1 red followed by room with 6 yellows

this is part from elevator to the minecart.

So far...Last 4 I farmed took about 1 hour 100% of the alloys came from the Red robots
