NBA 2K13 General Questions Thread

I realize it's a bit late but hey, better late than never, eh? :p

Anyway, use this thread ask questions about the game. Whether it's about the game of basketball or how to unlock certain stuff, etc. If you have trophy related questions, you can ask here but be sure to check the trophy guide or existing thread(s) first please.

Anyone know how assists work? Sometimes I get them, sometimes I don't. Does the other person have to shoot in a certain amount of time? If so, even that doesn't make sense because sometimes a player will take a shot in two seconds and it will count but later, same thing but no assist for this fella. :(

Not a big deal but I like to see my stats go up especially since I'm going for the Hall-of-Fame trophy.

The game is really stingy when it comes to assist. If you receive a bad pass on your team grade, then it doesn't count as an assist even through it leads to a layup and there are other times when it leads to a clean score and no assist.

But to answer your question, If the set-up moves immediately lead to a basket, it counts for an assist. Example: you pass the ball to a player, who drives down to the rim and slams it in > counts as an assist

But if you pass it down to the post and the player decided to dribble a few times and pull off a drop step > no assist because the player made an offensive move to score a basket.

Well, the game mechanics doesn't really always behave as it should or as expected.

During my career, in tons of games I received credit for an assist even when my teammate dribbled the ball a few times before score. Mostly when I passed to guys and they did post moves, like dribbling and backing up or doing a hopstep or a hook shot, my pass counted as an assist.

The crude definition of assist says it is the pass that immediately leads to a score. But it can be subject to interpretation... like the receiver dribbling fact counting or not as an assit. The pass leading to a shooting foul and basket was not considered an assist in the NBA, but always counted in the FIBA. I don't know how NBA deals with this matter nowadays.

I think it's mostly like if the pace of the play you intended to make is not completely interrupted, it counts as an assist.

The thing I can state for sure is that if you have a pass tipped by the opponent and a teammate still receives that pass and make the basket, it won't count as an assist.

Anyway, the system is not 100% reliable.

Hey, I need some help. This is my first basketball game. I got it a few days ago, so I'm just getting used to the buttons at the moment. I'm mainly playing the career mode with my created player.

A few questions, if you don't mind:

How do you defend? I can't steal, block or even run with my guy. He beats me EVERY TIME :(

What camera angle is best?

Is there any way you can edit the CPU ability? Just while I get used to the game.

Defense can be quite difficult at first. My recommendation would be to not get too close to your man if he's out on the perimeter or else he'll blow by you.

Instead of going for a block, if you're in the paint try stealing the ball instead (:square:), sometimes you can strip big men before they're able to go up for the shot. If you're in mid to 3pt range, instead of pressing :triangle: to block if you hold up the right stick you stick your arms up to pressure their shot without leaving your feet (which means you won't get up in the air if they pump fake). You can still go for a block sometimes, but be wary of pump fakes.

In terms of stealing, since the patch reach-in fouls are called a lot more often. Your best bet to steal is to try anticipate the pass and get in the passing lanes. A lot of these things may seem tough at first, but it'll come easier with practice.

What camera angle is best?

There is no "best" camera angle, but I like to use the 2K camera, as it allows you to see floor spacing/passing lanes easier than the default view. However the downside is that it has to do a 180º spin when possession changes, which can mess up an opportunity for a fast break if you're not used to it.

Under settings in MyCarrer there should be a difficulty option. Unfortunately Pro is the lowest it can go in this mode. If you wanted to get a bit of practice on an easier difficulty first you could try Association and set the difficulty to Rookie. There are also sliders you can alter, but these are not available to be customized in MyCareer.

But my main recommendation would just be to practice. This is your first basketball game and will take a bit of time getting used to. Don't be discouraged if you're not fantastic straight away, just keep at it. :)

Thanks for the advice.

What buttons do you use? I try and do a spin move but sometimes end up shooting. I don't like the right analog at all, I use :square: to shoot.

I'm thinking of becoming a C, might be easier to defend. Thoughts?

I also use :square: to shoot, and then the :rs: to pull off dribble moves. Make sure you don't hold down :l2: if you're trying to do a dribble move, or else you will end up shooting (assuming you have the default controls set).

I haven't really played too much of a proper MyCareer at C, so I can't really tell you. You may as well try it out and see how you find it. :)

Thanks.

I started as a pass first PG, then changed to a scoring PG, then a scoring SG, then a C and now I'm a 3pt specialist SG. Any tips on getting a good grade in the rookie showcase game? I'm trying to get the draft-related trophy but the highest I've been drafted is 19th, I think.

By the way, I'm sticking as a 3pt SG. I take way too many shots :p

EDIT - I've just been drafted 11th by the Trail Blazers :)

Congratulations! Now just the long grind to the Hall of Fame. :p

I doubt I'll get there tbh. I miss too many shots :(

Get ready to get shown up by Lilliard at almost every game. That dude is a serious ballhog. :p

Yeah, he's scoring points though

EDIT - I have 20k points to spend. What would you recommend me to buy?

It depends on your play style. Mid-range shot, 3-pt shot, shoot off dribble are all valid choices (offensively). Speed can help too, if you like to make cuts/run the fast break.

Basically, to start off, see what you're doing the most and upgrade that.

Shall I boost them up to 99 or can I get away with 95? Trying to spread my coins out as much as I can :D

It's up to you. 95 will suffice for the most part, but I like to max some things out (like speed, even if it is pretty damn expensive). But if you're trying to be as well rounded as possible, 95, or even lower values, should be more than fine.

Which trophies will be affected when 2k shut down the servers...all the online ones or just some of them? Getting this soon but don't want to be screwed out of being able to complete the game I paid for, so would focus on those first.

I did have a look at the guide but am unaware how it connects certain things

Alll the online ones will be unavailable when 2K shuts down it servers. Best to earn them now.

I've selected the "Play Next Key Game" option at least twice now. They need to move that. Why would they even put it at the top? It's also above the "Play Next Game" option. Missed out on quite a few games.

Edit: While I'm here, I might as well ask for some tips. The last game I played from this franchise was 2K8, so almost everything feels different. The entire game sort of feels overwhelming to me right now.

MyCAREER:

  • Tips for playing better defense?
  • How often should you buy attribute points and how many different categories should you be upgrading simultaneously?
  • I picked a 3 point specialist, can I still upgrade him to where he can attack the basket?
  • What are some recommended signature skills for a 3 point specialist?

Thanks again Drof

After playing, I can see I'm in a similar situation as Brandon (probably worse haha), last sport game I played was NBA Live 95 for the Mega Drive, so this is an entirely different experience.

When it comes to defence I've been holding :l2: and moving :rs:, but much of the time the guy will slip past me (though sometimes even when he scores I get a little nice defending thing in the top right bar), so far only one steal attempt has been successful the rest have resulted in fouls yet I have the ball stolen from me all the time, and when attempting to shoot more often than not the shot is blocked or it's a rebound.

Putting what little VC I have into Shot Inside, Shot Close and Shot Medium

Tl;dr

Mostly need tips on defending and stealing

Oh, and what's the easiest and/or quickest way to earn VC? I mean without buying it

I've found defending to be a lot more difficult in this game as it seem that players can get past you so easily. I usually stand back a bit and rather them shoot over me than the layup. They have made it more difficult to steal recently after the patch so unless you are trying to steal the ball from a big man it is better not to do it. Try get into the passing lanes to get steals and easy fast break points.

To quick VC, you can get the app and earn a maximum of 1000VC per day. Or play blacktop offline and get 150VC per game. You can online as well get earn 250VC per game I think? There is also a Facebook App where you can earn a "Facebook Dunk Package" after you get to a certain level.

Hope this helps. :)

How long does it take for videos uploaded in the game to show up on the 2K website?

Also, is there a button in the pause menu that does an automatic montage of the last completed play? Like, it adds a color filter and music and just shows you the play. I swear I've accidentally done it before, but I just can't remember how.

So I've put about 5k VC into my guy so far, saving up 20k+ to ding that trophy, afterwards would I be better pumping that into my existing player or retire him early (if possible) to start again and get a lottery pick with a beastly new player?

Thanks man, stopped trying to steal all the time to stop giving them free points trying my best with defence and practised a move to get past defenders and my game is improving but I'm still really bad (just won my first quick match, now I'm at 1-4). For VC I just decided to run NBA Today games in coach mode for the simple reason that it takes seconds to set up and I can go do other stuff while it's running, grabbed that dunk package in that terrible facebook game too.

The lack of fouls being called in this game is mind-blowing. Can't believe it.

It's also extremely frustrating when players are missing layups and shots right under the basket. I understand them missing if there's body contact or whatever, but fouls never get called when you do get bumped. Ridiculous.

It's like they call shooting fouls when there's barely any contact. There's not even an animation most of the time, it's just one player barely clipping through another. Yet, they never call a foul when there's a ton of contact clearly showing up during an animation. I don't understand it.
