Introduction:

NASCAR Unleashed is a racing game made by Activision and Firebrand Games. The game feels more like an arcade-style racer than anything remotely realistic to actual race car driving, since the game is very much designed around boosting and smashing into other cars. The game does have decent controls and all of the official licensing/drivers, so if you are a NASCAR fan, you'll likely enjoy the game. It also has a fairly easy and straightforward trophy list for those who are simply interested in the trophies, but please be aware that the game has very unforgiving AI at times and will likely frustrate you at some point. Those who are excellent at racing games will breeze through this, but those who are not very good at racing games will struggle.

In addition, there is a Trophies option at the Main Menu, which outlines all the trophies in the game and shows you how close you are to completing them. This is very useful to keep track of how well you are progressing towards the “grinding” type of trophies in the game.

Walkthrough:

Step 1: Play Through Championship Mode - You are basically required to start the game in this mode anyway, as the other modes aren't unlocked until you play the first race. There is no difficulty selection, so no need to worry about looking and the drivers/cars all seem to control the same. Technically all you have to do is complete the primary goals on each track in Championship Mode, which are very easy (finish top 10, 5, etc.). Although you can fly through Championship Mode, I would suggest concentrating on unlocking as many trophies as possible along the way, in addition to completing as many challenges as possible towards unlocking every paint color in the game to save grinding at the end.

Step 2: Earn Gold In All Time Trials – This is the most difficult part of the game, as some of the time trials require you to boost at a certain point during the lap and do a lot of drifting to maintain the boost for an extended period of time. Check the individual time trial trophies for additional tips.

Step 3: Complete Quick Race Season & 2-Player Co-Op Trophies – These trophies are completed in Quick Race Mode and should be very quick. Thankfully you can do the 2-player trophies by yourself with a second controller fairly easily.

Step 4: Miscellaneous Clean-Up – This is where you may have to grind more points towards unlocking all the paint colors and/or clean-up any other trophies missed along the way.

Championship Mode Trophies:

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1256/02.jpgJust A Scratch (B)

Use pit lane to repair your vehicle 50 times

Pretty simple, just drive through pit lane 50 times throughout all of the races. It's a good idea to finish The Hard Way first, then try to drive through pit lane on every single race/lap you can until you get this. You can check your progress towards this in the Trophies section at the Main Menu and the Time Trials also count towards this.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1256/03.jpgNot On My Watch (B)

Wreck a car in pit lane before the repair

The easiest way to get this is to save a boost and press :triangle: to smash into another car while in pit lane, before they cross the start/finish/pit line.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1256/04.jpgThe Hard Way (B)

Finish 5 races without using pit lane

I suggest doing this in the first 5+ races, as it's much easier and your opponents aren't as aggressive as they are later in the game. Simply drive a bit safer and avoid damaging your car enough to require you using pit lane. I'd suggest working towards Just That Good along with this trophy.

You can also unlock this via Time Trials, which makes it even easier. In addition, you can check your progress towards this in the Trophies section at the Main Menu.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1256/05.jpgJust That Good (B)

Finish 3 races without wrecking or using pit lane

You should get this naturally while working towards The Hard Way trophy. If you are having trouble, try to play it safe by not creating rivals during the game so they won't wreck you. You can also unlock this via Time Trials, which makes it even easier.

See The Hard Way for additional information.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1256/06.jpgI Meant To Do That (B)

Drive over 15 oil slicks

This will happen naturally, as over the course of the game you will drive over many oil slicks. You can check your progress towards this trophy in the Trophies section at the Main Menu.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1256/07.jpgWatch Your Step (B)

Bump another car into an oil slick

This trophy is essentially unmissable, as the game requires a lot of bumping and you'll naturally bump them into an oil slick throughout the game. If you see an oil slick coming up, get close to another car and push them into it when it gets close.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1256/08.jpgDidn't See You There (B)

Bump another car into a hazard

This trophy is essentially unmissable, as the game requires a lot of bumping and you'll naturally bump them into a hazard throughout the game. If you see a hazard (tires, boxes, etc.) coming up, get close to another car and push them into it when it gets close.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1256/09.jpgTurbo Speed! (B)

Complete 50 Slingshot boosts

Slingshot boosts are when you build up your boost meter to full by drafting other cars in front of you. This trophy is essentially unmissable, as slingshot boosts are a critical part of winning races and completing challenges. You can also check your progress towards this trophy in the Trophies section at the Main Menu.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1256/10.jpgIt Still Counts! (B)

Wreck your car across the finish line

This is probably the trickiest trophy in the game, since it's pretty tough to create the timing perfectly. You can try damaging your car a lot during the race and smashing into the wall right at the finish line, or I'd suggest using 2 controllers (preferable with a friend). It's much easier if you have a second person to help you, but you can do it by yourself as well.

For the 2-controller method, you'll want to set up a Quick Race at the Daytona Speedway Oval Track and set it up on Easy, with 1 Race and 2 Laps. Have the 2nd player join in and start out the race by controlling the 2nd player until you can generate a slingshot boost. Save the boost for the last lap, so you can try to time the 1st player going around the track to the finish line where you will smash into them with :triangle: . The part that makes it tricky is that the game makes the cars always move in a continuous rolling start. If you time the 2nd player to finish the first lap (while generating a boost), then pick up the 1st controller and build up a lead, you can get them to approach the finish line at the same time. It'll take a few tries to figure out the timing, but you'll eventually get it.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1256/11.jpgWinner! (B)

Place 1st on the Daytona Oval

Just finish first in a race at Daytona, on the Oval Track. You'll likely get this in your first race, which is more like a tutorial anyway.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1256/12.jpgShow-Off (B)

Perform a donut and go on to win the race

This is a very easy trophy as well. I'd suggest the 2nd to last event in the Rookie Event Championship Mode, on the Daytona International Speedway Oval Track. This event is very easy to win and to catch up, so just do a donut at the start by holding :r2: , :square: , and cranking the left stick all the way to the left or right.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1256/13.jpg2 Birds, 1 Stone (B)

Make 2 Rivals at the same time

You'll get this naturally during the game as you need to create many rivals for the various challenges in order to score points. The quickest way to do it is to boost into side of a few cars while they are taking a turn. You should cut the corner on the inside, the press :triangle: and boost into them.

Drift around 75 turns

Drifting is done manually by pressing :square: while rounding corners, but you automatically drift after you boost by just continuing to accelerate. You'll get this naturally throughout the game and definitely during the time trials if you don't get it by the time you finish Championship Mode. You can also check your progress towards this trophy in the Trophies section at the Main Menu.

Score higher than 175,000 in a single race

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1256/16.jpgSun Was In My Eyes (B)

Wreck your car 15 times

This will likely happen naturally during Championship Mode just by racing, since the other cars like to smash into you a lot. If it doesn't happen by the time you are finished, then just pick a track and keep boosting and smashing into walls until your car blows up. You can also check your progress towards this trophy in the Trophies section at the Main Menu.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1256/17.jpgLook Mom! (B)

Drive over 35 ramp jumps

This will likely happen naturally during Championship Mode and/or Time Trials. If it doesn't, then run the time trial on Talledega Superspeedway Canal Run over and over until it unlocks. This track has several jumps on it, so just hit them all on each lap. You can also check your progress towards this trophy in the Trophies section at the Main Menu.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1256/18.jpgStuntman (B)

Perform 5 barrel rolls in mid-air

This is very easy and you'll likely get it during the Championship Mode. If you crash really bad, you'll go into a barrel roll spin and unlock the trophy.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1256/19.jpgRocketman (B)

Slingshot into 25 ramp jumps

This will likely happen naturally during Championship Mode and/or Time Trials. All you have to do is use boost ( :triangle: ) over ramps. If it doesn't, then run the time trial on Talledega Superspeedway Canal Run over and over until it unlocks. This track has several jumps on it, so just hit them all on each lap. You can also check your progress towards this trophy in the Trophies section at the Main Menu.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1256/21.jpgStylin' (B)

Customize any car with an unlocked paint job

This description isn't quite accurate, as all you need to do is customize your car with anything. You will unlock customizations as you progress through Championship Mode. Once you've unlocked an item, you can assign it at the vehicle/driver selection screen by pressing right to change the paint color or by pressing :square: to go to Rewards.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1256/26.jpgTough Guy (B)

Make 75 rivals

To get a rival during a race, you simply need to wreck them by smashing into them. Draft behind the other cars until you get a boost, then press :triangle: to use it and smash into the other cars on the track. Stay in the middle to back of the pack when going for these, since if you are leading you won't have any opportunities to wreck other cars.

Score a payback

See That'll Learn Ya!

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1256/29.jpgThat'll Learn Ya! (B)

Score 10 paybacks

Paybacks are scored when you crash someone who has crashed you. You'll know they are eligible for a payback when they have a green square above their car. You may unlock this naturally throughout the Championship Mode, if you pay attention to the green square cars and ram them with your :triangle: boost. If you don't have 10 paybacks by the end of Championship Mode, the 2nd tier (Pro Event) of races has a Bonus Event (Payback Challenge) that is specifically designed to get a payback easily. Just grind out the rest of the paybacks you need here.

Score 125 slams

See Unnecessary Roughness

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1256/31.jpgUnnecessary Roughness (B)

Score 250 slams

Slams are when you smash into another car with force. You'll easily get 250 of these by the time you finish Championship Mode and any grinding for all the paint jobs.

To get a rival during a race, you simply need to wreck them by smashing into them. Draft behind the other cars until you get a boost, then press :triangle: to use it and smash into the other cars on the track. Stay in the middle to back of the pack when going for 5 in a race, since if you are leading you won't have any opportunities to wreck other cars.

Drive over oil, dirt, sand, gravel, water, and grass

You'll get this naturally by playing through the game in Championship Mode. You'll drive over everything except sand in the first few races and then sand is unlocked on the first race (Beach Run at Daytona) of the Pro Event in Championship Mode (the 2nd set of races).

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1256/35.jpgHot Shot (B)

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1256/47.jpg That All You Got? (G)

Complete the legend tier in championship mode

You'll unlock all three of these trophies by simply completing the game in Championship Mode and fulfilling the Primary Goal on each race. This mode isn't all that difficult since, thankfully, most races you don't even have to finish in the Top 5 to continue on. The AI can be very unforgiving at times, especially in the later races. You can use the rubber-banding to your advantage though, as I would often stay near the back of the pack and come back to win or at least place in the top 2 or 3. I found it was much more difficult to stay in 1st place than it was to just save up a boost and use it near the end of the race.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1256/38.jpgWorld Traveler (B)

Unlock all race tracks

This trophy is unmissable, as you will play on all tracks in the Championship Mode. You should unlock this when you unlock the last three tracks of the Pro Event.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1256/39.jpgDrive By Healing (B)

Boost through pit lane restore

Simply save a boost for the pit lane and hit :triangle: before you pass the finish/starting line.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1256/40.jpgPiece Of Cake (B)

Complete 10 challenges

Challenges are always shown in Championship Mode on the left-hand and right-hand side of the screen while you are racing. You'll need to complete them to score points in the game and most are very easy. You'll easily get this trophy over the course of playing.

Challenges typically center around five categories:

  1. Getting to a certain postion in the race (3rd Place, for example)
  2. Destroying hazards/items on the road (tires, cones, boxes, etc.)
  3. Drifting on turns
  4. Slamming into other cars
  5. Destroying other cars to make them Rivals

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1256/41.jpgOver Achiever (B)

Complete 5 challenges in a single race

Challenges are always shown in Championship Mode on the left-hand and right-hand side of the screen while you are racing. You'll need to complete them to score points in the game and most are very easy. For this trophy, you'll need to complete five in a race, which is very easy. If you have any trouble, I'd suggest the 2nd to last event in the Rookie Event Championship Mode, on the Daytona International Speedway Oval Track. This event is 5 laps and very easy, so it should give you ample opportunities to complete 5 challenges during the race.

See Piece Of Cake for additional challenge information.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1256/42.jpgDomination! (S)

Score higher than 225,000 in a single race

Points are essentially XP in the game and this trophy is very easy, as I got it on the 4th race. Pay attention to the challenges listed on the left-hand and right-hand side of the screen and try to complete them for the most points. You score points in many ways, but the best way to get a high scores is simply drafting behind the other cars until you get a boost, then press :triangle: to use it and smash through the other cars. Also, make sure to finish in first place in a race in order to score a bunch of points as well. To add some detail, here is some of the point scoring in the game:

  • Slams = 500 Points
  • Slingshot Boosts 1,000 Points
  • Rivals = 2,500 Points
  • Paybacks = 10,000 Points

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1256/44.jpgGotta Have 'Em All (S)

Unlock all vehicle paint jobs

To unlock various paint jobs, you need to score points (XP) in the races by completing challenges and finishing time trials. The more challenges you complete (and the higher you place), the more points you'll earn in the game. You'll need 10,000,000 points across all modes in order to unlock the final paint job in the game (and the trophy). To add some detail, here is some of the point scoring in the game:

  • Slams = 500 Points
  • Slingshot Boosts 1,000 Points
  • Rivals = 2,500 Points
  • Paybacks = 10,000 Points

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1256/45.jpg Lightning Reflexes (S)

Drive in boost mode for 12 seconds or more in a race

You'll get this naturally by going for the golds in the time trials. There are a few tracks that require you to maintain your boost for an extended period of time in order to achieve gold. After boosting with :triangle: , you can keep tapping or squeezing the accelerator to keep your boost/drift going for quite a while. I'd recommend the Daytona Oval to go for this if you are impatient, but trust me that you'll get it during the time trials.

Avoid walls and track barriers to score 2 perfect laps in one race

You'll probably get this just by playing, but the best Ptrack for this is the Daytona International Speedway Oval Track. The second to last event in the Rookie Championship Mode is raced here, so you can get it in Championship Mode. Basically, if you can get to an early lead on the first lap, just ride around the track as normal and don't hit any walls, barriers, or go into pit row (since there are barriers in there). I got 4 perfect laps on this 5 lap event.

Earn gold trophies on all time trial tracks

This is the most difficult part of the game, as some of the gold times are very easy, while some will make you want to break a controller. A few tips throughout:

  • Do not be afraid to restart the race if you screw up (especially near the beginning of the race). Some of the time trials have very unforgiving times, so it is critical to make sure you get a great start and very good first lap (on those that require 2 laps).
  • Always make your boost last as far as possible. You can keep tapping or squeezing the accelerator to keep your boost/drift going for quite a while sometimes.
  • Use good racing sense by taking turns tightly, boosting in straightaways, and knowing when to let off the accelerator are the most critical pieces of the time trials. Personally, I didn't use :square: to manually drift or press the brake during the time trials and eventually made the gold times on every track.

In addition, here are some tips on a couple of the tough tracks:

Talledega Superspeedway Canal Run – Goal 25 Seconds - This was a very tough track, because you want to go fast, but you have to be very careful not to overuse the boost and accelerator. The key is really staying off the grass (especially in the narrow section with ramps), avoid hitting too many obstacles, and keeping a high speed throughout. Don't worry about smashing into the narrow corner after the straightaway (going into the second lap), as the game usually auto-corrects you so you won't crash out of control.

Martinsville Speedway Mountain Pass – Goal 30 Seconds - The key on this track is knowing exactly when to boost. Keep practicing the very first section (through the grass) until you can use one boost all the way through it and through most of where the road is split by a median. Boost out of the first median section and into the bridge section with the semi trailer. Don't bother hitting the ramp though, just go to the right of it. As long as you can maintain about 200 mph or so through the tunnel, you should be able to save that boost you got at the beginning of the tunnel until after the second median section and hit it right before the checkpoint, so you'll have another in waiting case you screw up. It's critical to maintain a very high speed in the section passing pit lane (going into Lap 2). My personal checkpoint for Lap 1 is that you should have at least 32 seconds on the clock to be on pace to finish with gold.

Quick Race & 2-Player Trophies:

Why did this get a 4/10 it's easily a 2/10 I beat it twice in the same week when it first came out

It isn't. I clearly wrote "TBD" for the rating and that my personal estimate is 4/10. This will be a 2/10 for some and 5/10 for others (please see the difficulty thread), hence I believe it'll land in the ~4/10 range.

If anyone is having trouble in the Legend Tier of the championship, you can start a 2 player co-op and you'll only have ten cars to contend with. So when you crash, you can get back in front really quick. Much easier than trying to pass all 20 again. The race will start with 20 cars, but in co-op, half the cars will stick with player 2. After passing the event, you'll have to pick up controller 2 and finish the race for it to count. This makes the last couple events easier as you have to finish top 3, then first.
