The Prog Thread

Alright, since Jake wants to bring up prog in the metal thread all the time (no, they are not the same, but they could overlap in certain aspects :p), I decided to make a prog-only thread.

To start, here are the giants of prog rock (or the most popular)... virtually all of their albums are good, in my opinion. Classic prog is very muddled since the members of these groups crossed paths a lot and did various side projects and solo albums, etc... there are various spin-offs and side bands, but these are the core bands:

Yes

Genesis (defunct)

King Crimson

Rush

The Alan Parsons Project (defunct)

Emerson Lake and Palmer (defunct)

For newer, younger bands (either rock/metal), these I consider the best ones:

Dream Theater

Spock's Beard

Opeth

OSI

Fates Warning

The Mars Volta

Threshold

Notable related bands:

The Buggles

Asia

Gordian Knot

There are a lot more you could throw in here, but let's start with those... my favorite albums from each of the classic bands are as follows:

Yes - Tales From Topographic Oceans

Genesis - Wind and Wuthering

King Crimson - Discipline

Rush - Permanent Waves

The Alan Parsons Project - The Turn of a Friendly Card

ELP - Brain Salad Surgery

Most recent releases from well-known prog bands:

Yes - Heaven and Earth

Rush - Clockwork Angels

King Crimson - A Scarcity of Miracles (not released as KC, but essentially the same thing)

Fates Warning - Darkness in a Different Light

Opeth - Pale Communion

Spock's Beard - Brief Nocturnes and Dreamless Sleep

Let's discuss.

Here are some samples of prog:

You sure about that? There's a lot of bands that are considered progressive that sound more like instrumental/experimental bands, so I'm not sure if that would be considered as derailing. :p

A few examples:

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=19UZd_DKs2Q]Between the Buried and Me - Selkies: The Endless Obsession *FULL SONG - YouTube[/ame]

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t0oyCXSd02U]Veil Of Maya - It's Not Safe To Swim Today Official Live Music Video - YouTube[/ame]

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=spCmStMOiHE]Periphery - Make Total Destroy (Official Video) - YouTube[/ame]

I think if you want to keep these bands away from here, you might have to mention something about Meshuggah at some point. :p

To make it easier to decide, if they have any growling vocals, discuss them in the metal thread. :) I will remove Enslaved from my list considering that. Opeth has turned into a more traditional prog band, which is why I included them.

Fair enough. Although I think BTBAM's Colors album should be put into consideration. And that means Animals As Leaders are considered progressive on this thread.

Well, lack of vocals don't mean it's automatically in... :p I'd probably still do that one in metal.

But I don't want to argue about what belongs in the thread... so I put some sample songs in the first post. At the risk of sounding condescending, I'm not sure how familiar you are with the bands I'm talking about, but to me there's a distinct difference between those and what you're posting.

That song is great. :D I started listening to the whole album and I'm loving it.

I'd probably still do that one in metal.

I would have to agree with that though. Most of the song sounds like slightly more complex than normal metalcore without the screaming. :p

Also music genres confuse me. :francis:

I was wondering how long it would take for BTBAM to come up, turns out not long :p. I would always consider BTBAM progressive, but like Vy says, there's a difference between bands of their style and the examples in the first post (I haven't listened to them all, but I can well imagine what they're like).

To make it easier to decide, if they have any growling vocals, discuss them in the metal thread. :)

I need me the growling vocals and will retreat to the metal thread post-haste :p!

Me too, I don't worry about such things though; if I like, I listen!

You know what music is missing these days? A massive overflow of keyboards and synth.

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TQQdYokbp4E]Emerson Lake & Palmer - Knife-Edge - YouTube[/ame]

You know what else it's missing? 30 minute long songs.

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fLS0Med0s6E]Karn Evil 9 - Emerson, Lake & Palmer - YouTube[/ame]

EDIT

It's been well over a month since I've sat down and heard this stuff. I think I understand why girls hate my music so much now.

Fuck it, I gotta keep going

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3yar10vUjcc]Yes - Sound Chaser - YouTube[/ame]

I have no idea what this is, or how someone even came up with the idea of making this. It's musically insane. And at 3:00 and 3:48, you've even got some Bach licks thrown in.

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QqYo-iGZ_gI]King Crimson - The Court Of The Crimson King 1969 Remastered - YouTube[/ame]

Then this... omg. No one had, or has since, taken a Mellotron to the level of how King Crimson used them. When I first heard this years ago, I had no idea how someone was capable of building a atmosphere like that. Then at 5:30, I have that whole verse on the back plate of one of my guitars. When people see it they're just like "Wtf is that", and that's exactly how I reacted when I first heard it too, that's why I love it.

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CGzk2O9QhB8]Led Zeppelin: No Quarter 5/25/1975 - YouTube[/ame]

Most people, they only see Zeppelin as the obvious radio songs, and I really hate that. Yeah, they had radio songs, probably the best radio songs ever too. But deep in their discography, and live, they were the complete opposite of a radio band.

It was Maiden and Metallica that made me start getting into longer more complex music. And then one day, I found Zeppelins "How The West Was Won" live album. 25 minute versions of Dazed and Confused with a violin bow guitar solo, 20 minute drum solos, totally different and heavily extended versions of their songs, and even John Paul Jones piano concertos in a almost Keith Emerson fashion (No one really knows that JPJ is actually a heavily trained pianist).

This is the Zeppelin I wish people were more familiar with, because they were just as proggy as all the other bands deep down inside.

I've never heard of Spock's Beard before. That was better than I expected

There can't be a Prog thread without this

This needs some Progressive Metal

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wtHAKEZzrl8

I have to include my favorite band

I can't decide which is my favorite Pink Floyd epic. I keep switching between Echoes and Dogs

This is an underrated King Crimson album. I'm not sure why

Connor, you really just triple posted

And I just woke up, but I think it's time to start the day off correctly.

The lack of mention of the greatest band that ever lived in this thread severely disappoints me and makes me do a giant

I went against my rule of listening to the same album twice in one month today but come on guys....how can you forget.......

Every one of these albums is easily a 10/10.

They'll never be another band like Pink Floyd in my opinion.

Of course I had to triple post. I'm sure hardly anyone will use this thread.

I think apart from Lakes little acoustic ballads, this was the first real ELP song I heard. I know it was pretty much your first too. After I heard this, I fell in love with them.

Lake leaving Crimson made a entire new band in ELP and multiple new bands within Crimson. But sometimes I have to wonder, I wonder what else Fripp and Lake could of done together. Of course, I think the only reason he left was because Emerson saying he was going to recruit Hendrix.

The lack of mention of the greatest band that ever lived in this thread severely disappoints me and makes me do a giant

I figured it was too obvious to post Floyd, I thought someone else would have at anytime :p

Aghh I hate when people ignore Animals. Everyone seems to skip from Wish You Were Here right to The Wall. Animals to me, was the last true Floyd album and I it's just as good as anything else and no one pays attention to it. The Wall is great and all, it's still a 10/10, but it's a lower 10/10 compared to the rest, especially Animals.

EDIT

I've never been a massive fan of this song (But a lot of people seem to be in the ELP camp)

[ame]

[/ame]

But this, on top of a million other things ELP did, makes "Classic" rock turn into literal "Classical" Rock, and that's one reason I love them and Prog in general.

WAHTTT!?!? :francis: You can't ignore Animals! :francis: That's like ignoring peanut butter in peanut butter and jelly, or Ernie in Bert and Ernie....you just can't do that! Animals was an awesome album. I agree with you that The Wall was still a 10/10 but a lower one IMO book too. I could kind of sense faintly the beginning of the end :pout:

Anyways OT: I heard this on the radio today. Overplayed as hell but still a good one I think :D

It's still not as bad as this...

Okay I'll be the first to admit I wasn't a big fan of Syd's Pink Floyd. It was just TOO far out for me :/ There was some good music in there I think but a lot of it is just too trippy for me :(

Honestly the first Pink Floyd album (chronologically) that I really loved was Atom Heart Mother (though I know it often is considered a 'bad' album). I absolutely loved the atom heart mother suite and summer '68 blows my mind and makes me jizz my pants every time I hear it :francis:

I don't like the Syd days either. There's a massive following for him, and I don't get it. Even Waters used to say he depended on Syd for all the songs, and it's just weird to think he depended on songs like Syds.

I hate how no one notices that album, and I hate how Gilmour and Waters both talk massive shit on it. They were like the first band to tour with a whole orchestra, and plenty bands after them copied that, but I guess Gilmour and Waters don't look at it that way. And I wish Wright would have had more vocal time, that was his only stand alone song and it always leaves me with wanting more from him.

Yeah Syd has a huge following and I really don't why :/ I have a lot of respect for the guy for everything he did for the band, and I feel bad he broke down and basically shut himself off from the world, but I really just didn't dig his stuff :/

YEAH tell me about it! I never understood why Waters and Gilmour bashed the album...I thought it was miles ahead of the stuff they did before and was the first Pink Floyd album (chronologically) that I fell in love with.

I seriously loved that album...yet a lot of people trash it for some reason :pout:

Yea...I feel you. I really wish he had heard more from Richard Wright. He was seriously awesome! R.I.P Richard Wright. Enjoy that great gig in the sky...

Ok so you're a Punk who likes Pink Floyd, which is already rare, but what about Progressive Metal? :p

That fuckin bass

If anything I just consider myself a fan of classic rock :p anything after the 50's until the 80's I love :)

Yeah I listen to Iron Maiden sometimes. Listen to Ozzy Osbourne (Black Sabbath) too :)

Although I do admit I stick to more rock than metal. I still listen to metal occasionally though :D
