Racist Hunger Games Fans... Seriously... WTF!?

a few articles on the internet have recently sprung up due to fans of the Hunger Games book going to see the movie and being (for some odd reason) majorly surprised at the inclusion of black characters. They then proceeded to post extremely racist things on their twitter accounts which Tumblr user "Hunger Game Tweets" has been keeping track of, some of these tweets can be seen in the spoiler:

the Tumblr page (found here) has received many posts by followers (of all races) expressing their distaste in the pure idiocy, ignorance, stupidity, and plain retardation of the racist twitter posts.

the outrage has gotten so out of hand that most of the twitter users who posted these stupid tweets have been forced to either close their twitter accounts or change them to private.

personally I think they all deserve to have the shit beat out of them.

the worst part about this idiocy? in the book it CLEARLY indicates that they are indeed black, or at least brown.

Phillip DeFranco expresses EXACTLY how I feel about this moronic droll better than I ever could myself (skip forward to 2:54 and watch until 4:39).

youtube user formando has been nice enough to upload the entire audiobook to youtube. split into 2 5 and 1/2 hour videos the total audiobook is 11 hours long, so you could very well finish it in a day. lol. anyways the links are in the spoiler.

I get what you're saying, and some of those tweets are brutal, but it seems like some of the people were just genuinely surprised that the character in the movie is black. It seems like there's a lot of confusion regarding the character's race if it's expressed explicitly in the book (I haven't read them myself), and discussing race doesn't immediately make it racist.

Personally, I raised an eyebrow when they cast Michael Clark Duncan as Kingpin in the Daredevil movie, simply because that wasn't what he looked like in the comics. It irritates me when a studio will cast a guy like Sasha Baron Cohen because he looks similar to Freddie Mercury for his movie, but they're fine with changing the skin color of established characters just for the hell of it. People also initially complained about Jennifer Lawrence's casting choice because she didn't "look like the character was described.

Needless to say, most of those tweets are way out of line, but you did say that someone who says "I didn't know Rue was black" should have the shit beaten out of them is unreasonable.

On the other hand, if these fans weren't biased toward whites in their entertainment, there'd have been no need for Hunger Games in the first place...

First time I heard about Hunger Games I immediately thought it was a remake of Battle Royale just with a different name... Still think it is >_> Just some ass wrote a book first so it didn't look like a remake, and thus they didn't need to get the Japanese to agree to it.

That bugged me... Last I checked, Kingpin was a big fat white guy. And Catwoman was also white... And Goku was Japanese (Ok, I grant that film was shit beyond belief but for fuck sake, get peoples race right).

Anyway, on topic. It is rather pathetic that people react this way even now. Ok, if the characters are portrayed as being white in the book then it is understandble to be surprised, and even a tad annoyed, if they have changed them for the film. That isn't racist. But the majority of those comments are.

all valid points you make, but for the last part, I actually meant the ones who were intentionally racist. Like I said, Mr. DeFranco says it better than I can. :o

sorry for the confusion.

While reading the book I thought Rue was a latina. Oh well. I definitely could tell she was a non-white. Haven't seen the movie, yet, but my wife is going to drag me to it sometime in April.

And for those of you comparing Hunger Games to Battle Royale, they are both excellent, even if Hunger Games is a Westernized copy of the basic premise. I've been able to convince several fans of the Hunger Games books to watch Battle Royale and they've all liked it, too.

Yeah heard about this yesterday. Those tweets are so weird they become funny as hell.

"kk call me racist but when I found out Rue was black her death wasn't as sad"

Wtf!

In all honestly stuff like this is pretty ridicoulos. Wasn't it the same when Idris Elba was to play Heimdall in Thor? Who gives a shit about skin color, as long as it isn't relative to that characters story.

I should also point out that I haven't read the book nor seen the movie but the little girl (Amandla Stenberg) who plays Rue is the sweetest thing ever.

lol, in the the video I posted Phil says "my favorite tweet is the girl who says 'I expected Rue to be black, but they made her TOO black' this one is my favorite because it's a special kind of racist."

lol, that line he said had me rolling.

Maybe people are just taking these tweets the wrong way round? I see these as humor comments. I think there is a difference in actually calling someone a 'n' and to having humor about it. But hey if he was black and said the 'n' word it be ok right ^^.

Racism I think just gets taken to heart too much. I think we got just grow up ourselves and not let words effect us. As mentioned racism will always be here.

EDIT: On tweeter there are worse comments I see there but ones you kinda pointed out in OP aint as dramatic as those.

as i started reading i thought immediately of michael clarke duncan as kingpin. :D glad he was mentioned. how about how they remade nick fury? he's so much cooler now.

when i read the book i actually completely missed the fact that rue and thresh were dark skinned. haha. i got my friend to read it and i told her that i pictured thresh as the hulk (yes, completely green and with purple shorts). and she called me stupid, and said he's more like michael clarke duncan. and i said, "what??? he's black???" made me feel very stupid. but just saying that i did miss that fact too somehow.

Actually this is Nick Fury from the Ultimate Marvel comics:

Clearly they modeled him after Sam Jackson, so there's no surprise there. Kingpin was a weird choice though.

I don't see how he is wrong, look at Halle Berry as Catwoman and Will Smith's son as Karate Kid.

Both are mediocre movies.

No idea what you're getting at here, but "Karate Kid" isn't a specific character, so they could cast whoever they wanted in the movie. Hell, they already did "The Next Karate Kid" in the 90s with Hilary Swank as the kid in question.

How does the ethnicity of a character pertain to the story? I've never read these books so if somebody could help me better understand this I'd appreciate it. Was the characters ethnicity a big part of the story? Was she a native of a specific country where the setting and culture had a major impact on the book(s)? Even if this were the case, using such bigoted remarks to express your opinion is always unnecessary.

I raised an eyebrow too. Could you imagine them casting a white man as Blade?

It works both ways, but the comments people have posted are disgusting. If it's not clear in the book what colour a character is, how can you be mad?

I read about this when it happen. People are dumbasses. The book describe the two characters as "Dark skinned". That's enough information right there to tell you that Rue and the other guy wasn't white. No need to throw the racist comments up on tweeter just because you're disappointed by the truth of the author's characters.

^ This.

Get this Hunger Game bullshit, outta here. Another showcasing of Hollywood plagiarism on a novel/film already made in another country.

Hate seeing the limelight stolen from Battle Royale, and get pissed seeing friends/family/acquaintances go crazy over Hunger Games when I tried to show them Battle Royale YEARS AGO ...

https://www.youtube.com/movie?v=tgFt63qpD80

I'd say save your money, either buy Battle Royale or even pay to watch it on YouTube, and enjoy a MUCH better film, that was made 10 years before Hollywood jumped on their "young adult fiction novel" bandwagon...

I'd say this sounds more like The Running Man than Battle Royale.

There's so many different adaptations around of Battle Royale, But they just tend to have there own spin on it.

Another one that jumps to mind is The Condemned, That plus the Running man ran with the Criminal aspect to it, They would never be missed from society etc

I fail to see why everybody gets there face bent out of shape. If anything it will increase peoples perception of Battle Royale and in turn will increase its exposure
