Gain mastery for all fighters

For those who had previously put immense time into obtaining this one trophy, you'll be doing it a second time on your Vita system on account of save transfer being absent here. The big difference is that Versus Mode is replaced with Ad-Hoc , requiring a secondary Vita system for a quick grind on X-Rays and Blood Spills.

Those who are unfortunate to not own 2 Vita systems and are aching to find alternate solutions towards faster mastery progress on a single Vita, welcome to my guide on "My Kung Fu is Stronger" for solo Vita owners, as well as additional advice when boosting offline with 2 Vitas.

After so much trial and error using a combination of what Single Player has to offer, I can defiantly say these steps have made my journey to mastery a bit less stressful, but there will be much work ahead. For now, follow these steps of mine to show what my strategies were.

Just a quick note ahead, only Devotion Time is counted in Training Mode, much like the PS3 version. If you try out blood spills or X-Rays, it will not be added even if you have gone to Arcade Mode afterwards.

Step One

Hour Devotion

You may have seen this in previous guides for this trophy that it is recommended to begin your mastery by aiming for the total hours for the purpose of saving time. You also have heard that using a rubber band or any other item or method to keep the analog stick in one place for the character to move is also a necessity. You also heard that this must be done in Tag-Team Training so both characters can receive the same hours added even if the other isn't involved in the fight. There is one difference to this step.

You will aim for 22 hours instead of 24 hours.

You may be wondering why not 24 to get it over with? I do agree that 24 hours is all it needs, however there's a reason why you'll be aiming for 22 hours. After you have reached this cap, as you embark in Arcade Mode and additional single player mode, you'll be adding in additional hours to your character. After all X-Rays, Blood Spills, and "-alities" have reached their caps, you may notice the hours have also reached 24, completing the character mastery.

As you begin Arcade Mode grinding, it will approximately take up to 1+ hours assuming you're doing it the correct way which will be explained in the next step. Finishing that will put your hours into 23. Then as you boost X-rays, you'll be adding in another hour to your mastery, reaching 24 hours.

Therefore you have saved up to 2 hours of Vita screen time, and can use those extra hours into playing other Vita games before returning back for more grinding or continuing with offline trophies in MK9. That's optional though, so if you still feel like getting it done in one step, go for 24.

One crucial part that must be mentioned. While you're putting hours into your character, you must immediately win one match in Arcade Mode without going to Nekropolis after leaving Training Mode. Failure to do so will cause all your hours to be lost when checking your stats, so be very careful and always go to Arcade Mode after you feel that your hours have been met.

Step Two

Victories and "-alities"

(Of course, if you feel like doing the X-Ray part after the Hour Devotion, skip this section and go to Step Three, then return here. This is my method on how I progressed towards the mastery. Choice is yours.)

The second process towards your mastery is grinding in Arcade Mode for the next two parts. If you have been aiming to complete all character's endings via Tag Ladder, you should have gained 10 victories already, but have acquired little Fatalities along the way. For this step, you will be playing in standard Ladder but with a few differences.

Instead of Fatalities, you will be performing Babalities.

To perform a Babality, you must not block any incoming impact be it a standard attack or projectile throughout the round. Once you reached the finishing state, do your character's specific inputs for a Babality. These inputs aren't initially revealed when you start your game, but after one performance, it will be there for viewing.

Full list on all Babality inputs on the Vita version.

Fatalities can often drag out for a couple of minutes until it ends and stage fatalities (including The Pit) also carries several minutes with every activation. Babalities last for a shorter time allowing you to move much quicker to the next level. One important benefit is that Babalities can be performed at any part of the arena so you don't have to worry about accidental inputs such as a quick jab, instant win without a point added to "-alities".

Unfortunately Babalities don't carry over to Goro/Kintaro and Shao Kahn if you are playing with the time limit of 30 seconds in Beginner at 1 round, which is the recommended method when grinding. Therefore as you move pass Shang Tsung, after entering the fight with Goro/Kintaro, you must back out to the Main Menu and repeat the process.

You have up to 8 "-alities" added to your mastery, with every match straight to the Babality lasting about a minute. About 8+ minutes will be spent per Arcade run while going the Babality route.

There are two important notes to keep in mind.

Should you enter the Cathedral Stage, there's a chance you'll meet up with Classic Noob Saibot, which requires not tapping the Block Button for a duel against him. Unless you have not acquired the trophy of encountering Classic Noob Saibot once, it's not important to fight him seeing as you cannot do any "-alities" on him. Therefore to avoid a fight with Classic Noob Saibot without backing out to Player Select, simply let the timer run out. Otherwise you have to do a regular Fatality on your foe to get a point added.

You'll know when the chance of meeting Classic Noob Saibot comes if you see him standing in the background.

Also when playing Beginner, it's recommended to perform a combo that nets your character more blood spills throughout the ladder. This will save you a hefty amount when approaching the next step of mastery. The same goes for X-rays, you'll be saving up as you reach 100 "-alities".

Before we move on, there is one step should you decide to boost "-alities" if you have 2 Vita Systems be it solo or with a partner. This method can also be done on the PS3.

  • When boosting "-Alities" (should you be chaining this with X-Ray boosts if needed but it's optional), have your Tag Team opponents be Jax/Rain (or Jax/Sheeva for those on the PS3 that do not have access to Rain). After putting either Jax or Rain in the Finishing state, activate your character's Babality in any stage.

What's different about this compared to the standard Pit Stage Fatality?

The animation length of a Babality for Jax and Rain is the most shortest than the Pit Stage Fatality! This way, you'll save up minutes when continuing to boost, as well as have low risks on a mistimed input and the ability to perform this anywhere in any stage. It's heavily recommended to do this route should you be boosting with 2 Players.

Step 3

X-Rays and Blood Spills

And finally we've reached the longest part in single Vita grinding. You are now required to get 150 X-Rays along with 10,000 Blood Spills. This will be the last part you'll be doing towards mastery.

Many have attempted to do this via Arcade Mode with enough rounds for the opponent to continuing hitting you in order to boost your meter. Then there's the boosting method with 2 Vitas, which is also a preferred choice.

However, not all characters require boosting this way, and there are other alternatives for single Vita owners.

Test Your Luck

Most players use this only for their Jackpot trophy, but this mode serves another purpose. For starters this is as close to a standard "Versus" mode, except that your opponent will be randomized. The slots can range up to 4, but there are cases of 3 reels. Before going in this mode, first set your rounds to 3, and the Timer to off. With the Timer disabled, all reels that have any effect on the Timer will be null, increasing your chances on obtaining your desired spot. 3 rounds, we'll go over that soon.

After selecting your character, set the opponent's difficulty to "Easy" (or Medium if feel decent in Fighting Games). You could go for "Beginner", but "Easy" is my preferred pick, seeing as you need an opponent that isn't always aggressive, but also doesn't stay motionless for a period of time. This is important in order to extend the number of X-Rays and Blood Spills gained in every round. Afterwards you'll be greeted with the dreaded slots. The goal here is to aim for at least one slot that grants you Meter benefits (this is the important part). These are as follows.

  • Super Meter Regeneration

  • Gift of Super

  • Infinite Super Meter

The other spots you'll need is that which grants Health benefits BUT I do not encourage constantly resetting after getting your Meter benefits . I'll explain more, but if you do gain any of these first or last with the Super Meter, you're in the money.

  • Gift of Health

  • Health Meter Regeneration

  • Vampire Touch

Also, avoid getting any of these effects even if you reach Meter benefits. They will lock out your ability to do X-Rays.

  • X-Rays Disabled

  • Super Meter Disabled

  • Headless/Armless Kombat

  • Super Meter Degeneration

  • Health Meter Degeneration

There are also Stage Hazards such as Flame Floors and Missile Lock On, but as long as you receive Meter benefits, stay. If you receive any of these negative spots, retry Test Your Luck and attempt again.

Always get the First Hit, but even if you miss the chance, continue anyways.

If you received the "Meter Gift" benefit, continue soaking damage and whiffing special moves while attempting to snatch the falling buffs. As you reach full meter, launch an X-Ray for a point. You need at least 3 X-Rays if you have received this benefit, but it you let your opponent win after using an X-Ray, you'll get an additional chance for another increase. This is why I ask you to pick 3 rounds. It is needed to squeeze a bit of Extra X-Ray points whenever possible.

Again, if possible, after using an X-Ray, let your opponent win a round, then finish the entire match if you opponent has 2 wins. Be careful of Stage Hazards that can snipe the last bit of health!

If you received the "Meter increase" benefit, even better! Now you can patiently wait out the match, whiffing moves and soaking damage to further increase Meter and launching X-Rays. With this method you'll be receiving 5-8+ X-Rays if you let your opponent win matches after using several X-rays.

Take note that sometimes 3 straight X-Rays can snipe all your opponent's health (there are certain characters that require 4 X-Rays non-blocked for straight kills such as Sektor). Therefore on a match where you want your opponent to win, do 2 X-rays, then let the opponent win. As always, watch out for Stage Hazards stealing your opponent's last health.

If you received "Infinite Meter" benefits, you just gained the opportunity to receive up to 13 X-Rays in a match! Take this chance right away when you get it, but careful for negative spots such as Health Draining, Stage Hazards, and so on from the list. The method to max X-Ray gaining is this.

First/Second Round. 2 X-Rays (Or 3 depending on how much damage the X-Ray does), then let your opponent win the round.

Third Round and beyond, spam X-Rays until you win the full match.

Doing this correctly win net you a chunk of points.

Unfortunately, after you completed the full match, you will have your benefits reset. Good luck getting them all back as you retry!

If you received both a Meter AND a Health benefit during the reels, you just won the Jackpot! That's right! Now the rest of the match allows you to farm for an Infinite number of X-Rays until you reach the cap. It's simply performing an X-Ray, let your opponent recover health, repeat until you feel as if you reached the requirement. The process will be long as it took me about 80+ minutes with the number of X-Rays done about 100+ to get a full boost (it may vary), but at least you'll have it all done in one go.

That is of course IF you're lucky to reach this part. I do NOT encourage to endlessly retry so you can reach both a Health and Meter benefit seeing as a Meter benefit alone is enough to start X-Ray grinding. But if you still feel like getting this chance and getting it over with, good luck as the process to getting both Benefits can be slim.

If you don't feel like waiting between reels for your benefits, you can simply start the match as long as you don't get a spot that locks out X-Rays seeing as the entire match generally feels like an Arcade Ladder. This alone can net you 2-3 X-Rays depending on the process, but at least you'll get them without waiting too much.

But if you still don't feel that luck is at your side, there's another method.

Challenge Tower 300

After you have finished the Challenge Tower, it will be available for continuous usage. This, like Test Your Luck, also feels as close as "Versus" mode, but your opponents will always be Goro, Kintaro, Mileena, and Shao Kahn.

All characters can be entered here, including Kratos who does not have a Challenge Event in both Towers. In this mode, you're goal is to survive long enough to gain an X-Ray or two. This place is also a good way to grind Blood Spills due to Goro and Kintaro's high health, making it easy to get a good portion for your mastery requirements.

But I recommend losing the first few rounds to Goro after performing an X-Ray so that after you defeat him, your health will slightly increase, giving you more chances at taking hits from Kintaro and Mileena for further X-Ray chances. This will be even longer than the Test Your Luck (depending on how good your chances were) but at least you'll have more chances at gaining Blood Spills and X-Rays.

Also, it's important to get your First Hit. If you failed to do so, retry.

Some characters have moves and combos that increase Meter Gain even when blocked at a much higher rate, such as Liu Kang's Bicycle Kick, or Sindel's Step Kick. Find the combo string or the move that you feel nets you more Meter increase, and good luck.

Speaking of the Challenge Tower, did you know there are certain characters that benefit greatly in the Challenge Events due to the Meter benefits instantly increased? These characters are not needed in Test Your Luck, Challenge 300, or boosting with 2 Vitas seeing as you can simply retry in these Events for more X-Ray farming. The characters not listed will be the ones you'll do in the aforementioned ones. If you like, you can start off with these characters after reaching your Hour Devotion.

Challenge 77

Baraka

Meter is set to Infinite on the third cap after doing a combo of over 5 hits (Use Back, Back, 1/Square to do this). Take every chance when you receive this buff. There's a bug where the meter is disabled until you receive a hit. You can net up to 10 X-Rays per challenge here.

Challenge 95

Nightwolf

Use an X-Ray early on and on your fourth round, your Meter is set to infinite with a Power increase to boot, giving you at least 2 X-Rays in this state. If you feel that it's taking too long, go to Test Your Luck.

Challenge 117

Stryker

In this mission you are given Health/Meter gifts falling from the sky. You can tank hits to further boost your Meter for X-Ray usages and alternate between you and Jax's for Health Boosts. Try to evade his moves using Stryker's rolling attack (gives good meter gain if blocked) as you continue snatch Meter gifts.

If you feel this takes long, use Test Your Luck.

Challenge 124

Raiden

The only buff given is Health recovery that switches between Raiden and Kung Lao. As always, try to get the first hit and either tank hits or spam Raiden's Torpedo or Teleport to boost his meter. If Kung Lao's health is low, let his health recover by a bit and let him hit you to further boost your meter.

There's always Test Your Luck if you find this tricky.

Challenge 137

Jax

You can get up to 3 X-Rays here. You are pitted against Cyrax, Sektor, and Cyber Sub-Zero with your health recovering to full with every victory. Your goal here is to land as much X-Rays as possible. Should the AI be a bit much for you, refer to Test Your Luck for farming X-Rays.

Challenge 148

Sonya Blade

4 against 1 here. You can net up to 4 X-Rays if you continue to soak damage while your health recovers to full in every victory. Once again like Jax, if you feel the AI being a bit much, rely on Test Your Luck.

Challenge 177/275

Ermac

In challenge 177 you will fight against Sindel with the Meter benefit altering between the two. After a few seconds, you will receive said benefit to boost your X-Rays. However, Sindel's AI is slightly higher than normal, making it a tough fight. Challenge 275 pits you against 3 Goros for Blood Spill chance as well as additional X-Ray boosts. Their high health and large damage output should be enough to reach full meter for an X-Ray.

Otherwise if both seem to take long, go to Test Your Luck.

Challenge 226

Reptile

You will start off with full meter. against an Armored Cyborg. The trick is to always stock up meter using attacks that do not harm the Cyborg. To perfectly get the X-Ray chance, back away from the Cyborg and wait for it to jump towards you, then launch the X-Ray and attempt to soak up damage and pelt him with Reptile's Slide or Dash (careful you don't kill it with the Slide if you want another X-Ray point).

If this seems too tough to do, go to Test Your Luck.

Challenge 229

Kano

Probably the most easiest character to boost X-Rays. You should not be using him for 2 Vitas X-Ray grind seeing as this mission alone can net you a solid 10 X-Rays with Infinite Meter to boot. Keep spamming X-Rays is basically all you need.

Challenge 247

Shang Tsung

Moves that are considered "magic moves" are the only way to do any damage such as Quan Chi's projectiles and specific combos. Any other attack that Quan Chi does while it won't do anything to your health will greatly increase your meter for X-Ray, allowing you to tank as many hits for more meter. Also, Shang Tsung's own X-Ray won't do any damage to Quan Chi. Once you feel you have reached enough, use Shang Tsung's projectiles to finish Quan Chi or let him defeat you for a quick retry.

Challenge 280

Mileena

If only all characters had these kinds of specific rules.....Mileena has full X-Ray in the match so keep spamming it against Sindel. You can get up to 3 X-Rays, but if you managed to hit all 3 without Sindel blocking once, you can get an additional one for 4 X-Rays. The turbo settings makes this the most fastest method for a character's X-Ray available.

The following are exclusive to the Vita version.

Vita Bonus Challenge Mission 12

Rain

Continuously shake your Vita system to drop benefits from the sky. Use Rain's teleport to boost up your meter slightly as you continue to snatch Meter gifts for X-Rays.

Vita Bonus Challenge Mission 16

Scorpion

You can easily boost up X-Rays here while soaking up Shao Kahn's epic taunt damage. Careful you don't perform in the middle of his taunt or it will cancel out the effects.

Vita Bonus Challenge Mission 72

Sub-Zero

Simply fast tap the X-Ray button to fill up your meter, then launch it. During Sub-Zero's X-Ray, continue pressing the meter to have another stock waiting. Also, to squeeze out an extra X-Ray point, have Sub-Zero freeze Scorpion, although this may be tricky seeing as Scorpion's AI is slightly tough.

  • There's a bug in this mission that can happen at any time in the last second. If you try to activate Sub-Zero's X-Ray with little health remaining, should Scorpion's special moves make contact, there's a chance Sub-Zero will be stuck in one position, and it will stay this way even after the timer reaches 0, forcing you to retry and lose your points in the process. Be very careful.

Vita Bonus Challenge Mission 130

Kung Lao

With limited space you must hit Shao Kahn a total of 60 hits under a minute before time runs out. Here Kung Lao will not receive any damage allowing you to greatly gain meter from Shao Kahn's high output. Keep soaking hits and use X-Rays until time is out. Repeat. (Credit to Kotsam)

All other characters not mentioned, refer to the early steps to boost their X-Rays and Blood Spills. Of course, even after reaching full X-Ray requirements, you'll be steps away from their blood spills. Certain characters, especially those that do not use weaponry, will require more usage in order to chain as much blood spills as possible.

The guide by Obie83 goes in-depth for blood spills that can also benefit for Vita users.

But there's one in particular I like to point out of everything else.

Johnny Cage's X-Ray

Cage's X-Ray is unique for it's a counter move and requires an impact in order for activation. One special note about him is to not attempt to grind his X-Rays in Challenge 300 due to Goro and Kintaro possibly not making any contact, letting your Meter go to waste.

It's heavily recommended in Test Your Luck to get the Infinite Meter benefit as oppose to the other 2 in order to make the most of his counter X-Ray grind. If all else fails, he is also the only one you might need to boost Online or offline because of it if you feel that the opponent isn't doing any attempt of offense to activate his X-Ray.

Final Step

Clean Up

Even after achieving all requirements, there is a chance that you might miss a few minutes of Hour Devotion as well as Blood Spills. You can easily do this in Challenge 300 against Goro by using a character's combo that nets you enough Blood Spills. Refer to this thread for more info, but you don't get infinite X-Rays here. If you still need those extra minutes or hours, come by to Training Mode and stay there until you feel the requirement is reached, then proceed to Arcade Mode and win a round.

And that should be all there is for my method of the "My Kung Fu Is Stronger" trophy for the Vita. Please let me know if there's anything to point out. Hope this helps out in at least lessen the time of grinding for the requirements.

Anything discovered, need clarity, help updating, etc, let me know in advance and I'll make these changes as soon as possible.

Thanks for reading!

Tnx for this, some great tips, didn't occur to me to try boosting in Test your luck :applause:

Also, great tips for Challenge tower and bonus Challenge tower, I knew about Mileena, and a few others, but not about all of them mentioned, will save me some time.

I would like to point out one place where i got all my Xrays for Kung Lao easily - Vita bonus challenge tower 130. You are stuck there in limited space with Kung Lao against Shao Kahn, and the objective is to hit him 40 times if i recall. This is a great spot to quickly boost his Xrays.
