Introduction:

You have bought yourself the new Vita and have opted for the new ModNation Racers! I will assume that you haven't played the original so every concept is new to you (I haven’t played it yet either!). In my opinion it is a brilliant game. They took Mario Kart, added a little Burnout Paradise, and then added a sprinkle of LittleBigPlanet!

The main focus of this game is to build yourself new tracks and add them to the community. This means that when you beat the career, you will never run out of new tracks to play. Unlike LBP, a half descent track feels like it has been built by the developers, whereas a community level in LBP still feels as though it was made by a community member. I strongly recommend this title for any Vita player who even slightly enjoys racing games!

Walkthrough:

Step 1: Build and publish your own creations

Most trophies can be attempted whenever you feel like it, but I do recommend - before doing anything else - go and build a track, a kart and a racer and publish them to the community. You never know, the chances are slim but they may become the next hot race and shoot up the leaderboards! From this you will earn the three trophies for building a kart, a track and a racer, plus 1 for publishing your creation. For the next easy trophy, swipe you finger across the base menu until you see a vending machine. Click the machine, wait two seconds, and ding the next trophy for visiting the shop!

From this you will earn the following:

(B)Mechanic

(B)Sculptor

(B)Dresser

(B)Shopping Spree

Step 2:

Now for the career! There are five tour rounds and a bonus round, each consisting of 5 races, so there are 30 races in total for your Platinum. For the Platinum you will need to come first in every race. To unlock the next tour you simply need to place in the top three overall which should be easy, however, to unlock the bonus tour you must beat all of the stats available at the start screen of the career. Don't worry about this until stage three.

Step 3: Career mop-up

This is the time to pick up those missed tokens and miscellaneous trophies. Like most karting games, ModNation has collectibles. I found that none of them are difficult to find, if you find a shortcut the chances are there is a token at the end! The tokens are big enough to see in the distance and are always easy to spot. They look like small purple/pink nitrous oxide canisters surrounded by hovering gold sparkles. You can expect to find 5 per race. You can always repeat tracks to find missing ones.

In each race there are three challenges. The first is always to finish the race so I wouldn't worry about remembering that one but the other two are important for the Platinum. If you ever miss one, you can just repeat the race whenever you feel like it.

The challenges are always similar i.e:

  • Come first (or sometimes third) whilst not falling off the track.
  • Come first (or sometimes third) whilst not hitting any walls for one lap.
  • Come first (or sometimes third) whilst gaining X amount of spin points. (spin points are when you spin whilst in a jump, hold the right stick to spin)
  • Come first (or sometimes third) whilst gaining X amount of drift points (to drift hold :cross: and the direction of the corner curvature like most other karting games).
  • Come first (or sometimes third) whilst sideswiping X amount of opponents (just simply hit the right stick right or left when in line with an opponent to sideswipe).
  • Come first (or sometimes third) whilst taking out X amount of opponents (take them out wither with a sideswipe or a weapon)

Try and hit every objective of a race, get every token and win!!! Don’t worry if you don’t though, you can repeat any race at any point and you don’t need to get all challenges done in a single race, simply one per go.

Things to consider when aiming for that first place:

  • Aim for a speed start (hitting accelerate at the right time will get you this)
  • Don't fall off! This is obvious but just take extra care round drop off points, the time you will lose from falling will far outweigh the time it takes to be slower!
  • Drift whenever safe, you will get used to drifting all the time in races but you want to build up your boost!
  • Avoid weapons; if you get fighting weapons absolve them to drift (by holding triangle for 2 seconds). If you are able to take out an enemy with a weapon you are behind them, this is not where you should be! Always aim for the light green boost weapon pods, save up three for a warp boost which will give you a huge advantage!
  • Remember, if you are in eighth place, all is not lost as the A.I will slow right down. I have won many races going from 8th to first in the last lap!

Bonus Tour

You must now unlock the bonus tour, which to be honest will be a bit of a pain. There are five stats you must beat to unlock the bonus tour, all but one will undoubtedly be completed when you finish the tours (assuming you are a bit rubbish like me and repeat a few races):

  • Drift Distance – breach 65,000 meters
  • Shortcuts used – more than 50
  • Weapons expert – use more than 60
  • Item use – use more than 425

You will however find the next one is horrible:

  • Target time differential – beat -200.0s

Each track has a developer target time, you must beat all of these to gain the Join the Team trophy and then beat them all collectively by 200 seconds, when finishing the career my differential was 15.2 seconds and took a long time to make up the time! All I can say is race your best, utilise level 3 boost, drift to earn boost, absorb weapons to turn into boost and know your tracks. Take the shortcuts and avoid falling at any cost!

Here is a list of lap times that I got, this can help you choose what races are good to get big time differences in:

Tour 1

Race 1 - 1:54.979 (-10.026s)

Race 2 - 1:49.007 (-13.538s)

Race 3 - 2:10.713 (-7.362s)

Race 7 - 3:10.976 (-0.33s)

Race 9 - 2:35.558 (-22.055s)

Race 10 - 3:55.370 (-10.867)

Tour 3

Race 11 - 3:45.736 (-9.070s)

Race 24 - 4:38.484 (-9.151s)

Race 25 - 4:45.378 (+7.137s)

TOTAL TIME = - 232.8s

Step 4: Gather the remaining trophies

It is hugely unlikely after finishing the tour you will have any misc trophies left but just in case, here is what you may have left. Check the description and explanation for more information:

Complete all the race tutorials

Make sure when you start the career you do not choose to disable the tutorials when given the chance or you will have to unlock them in the game menu. In the first three tours there is the occasional tutorial, it simply pauses your game and gives you a diagram to explain something. There are around six tutorials and the last is in the second or third race of the third tour. The last tutorial is about ModBotz.

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/1105/40.jpg Bonus Tour Winner (S)

Get 1st place overall in the Bonus Tour

After you have unlocked this tour (see Bonus! for more details) you need to place at an average of first place across the five different tracks in the bonus tour, however, for the (P) you need to get firsts in all races so aim for that.

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/1105/41.jpg Join the Team (S)

Beat all 30 developer best lap times in career

This will come naturally with Bonus! (or should do anyway), see the racing tips in the Road Map but just try your best to get the quickest time you can on the career races to beat those target times.

It should be noted (as there was some confusion) that you need to beat the target lap time not the target race time. It's not that difficult, when I finished the first 5 tours I only had two to beat! When you go for the time differential on the race times this should definitely come naturally, although I was quite lucky with the early races and only had to beat the race time on the first three tours to get the 200 seconds. Just make sure you check the lap times!

This is something that I found that made this very easy. Take it easy on the first lap and make sure you go about 30 seconds behind the last opponent, this way on your speed lap they won't get in your way. Hang back and on your first slow lap make sure you get to a Level 3 boost weapon. Also, make sure you Drift a lot and fill your entire boost meter then when you approach the second lap, start boosting to get a good start and use your boost weapon earlier because you can get it again (as you will be in last place it will appear more). Do your best throughout the lap and at the end at the top of your screen you will see the lap time. If it is not better then the developer lap time then restart. I got most developer lap times first time with this method.

  • Come first (or sometimes third) whilst gaining X amount of drift points (to drift hold :cross: and the direction of the corner curvature like most other karting games).
  • Come first (or sometimes third) whilst sideswipe X amount of opponents (just simple hit the right stick right or left when in line with an opponent to sideswipe).
  • Come first (or sometimes third) whilst taking out X amount of opponents (take them out wither with a sideswipe or a weapon).
  • Check out the challenges in the track menu under the title "Achievements".

Collect all the tokens in the single player career

As said in the Road Map if you find a shortcut, the chances are you will find a token. There are no difficult to find tokens in a track, just try your best to explore. Every track has 5 tokens, if you get one and then finish the race, that one is then saved and you will no longer have to collect it. If you find tokens and then restart the race though you will have to collect it again, this can be annoying when you have one last token and you have to complete all three laps to save it.

A tip for those who struggle on finding some tokens. The stats page shows them in same order they are located on that race. Means that if your stats show something like this:

( ) (*) (*) (*) (*)

Means the token you are missing is somewhere near the start of the race. If it's something like this:

(*) (*) (*) ( ) (*)

The missing one is somewhere between the middle and the end of the track, and so on. It helped me a lot when I was missing only a few tokens, as you don't need to search the entire track, only the part you know the token is.

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/1105/45.jpg Dominator (G)

Come 1st in every race in the career

Again, read my race tips it really isn't too difficult. Just remember the A.I is as good as you are so if you are well behind, you will catch up!

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/1105/13.jpg Fill 'Er Up (B)

Fill your boost meter

Turn off your assisted driving as this will annoyingly use your boost when it feels like it. I got this on my first race, just drift and take out opponents and well. I don't even need to talk about it, just play one track and you will get it.

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/1105/14.jpg Third Eye (B)

Hit 5 opponents with mines in a Career Race

I thought when reading through the trophies that this would likely be a pain but it really isn't. Collect the mine weapon, upgrade it to level three by finding more of them, lay it and the chances are as long as you are not at the back of the pack, you will take out at least three if not more. I got this without realising after about 5 or 6 tracks.

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/1105/15.jpg Knockin’ Boost (B)

Drive over 100 boost pads

If you haven't been aiming for boost pads throughout the game then you really should. Just hit the boost pads and the trophy will pop round about your tenth track. In the stats menu in the favourites on the base menu I had used 732 of these by the end of my career.

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/1105/16.jpg Shields Up! (B)

Successfully defend yourself with your shield 20 times

You don't have to use your boost to boost, using circle will shield you. A full boost meter will shield you for around 4-5 seconds so if you see a target over you or can hear a homing missile beeping, use it! After twenty you will hear the ding (or not as my Vita sometimes won't make that coveted trophy noise). In the stats menu in the favourites on the base menu I had completed 640 of these by the end of my career.

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/1105/17.jpg Headspinner (B)

Do a 1080 spin and land successfully

You will get an in-game tutorial for this, I got this on the second or third track. Simply press the :rs: right or left whilst in the air and you will spin, do three complete spins and the trophy's yours. In the stats menu in the favourites on the base menu I had completed 83 of these by the end of my career.

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/1105/20.jpg Trigger Happy (B)

Use all the weapons in the game

There are 8 weapons in the game and each weapon has three levels so that is 30 weapons. To level up your weapons simply collect more of them before using one.

  • Dark Blue – Sonic Boom/Sonic Cannon/Sonic Rift
  • Dark Green – Pebble Blaster/ Dust Devils/Rockslide
  • Red – Straight Shot/Swarm/Hydra
  • Purple – Bolt/Chain Bolt/Bolt Storm
  • Orange – Flaming Fury/Triple Fury/Phoenix
  • Light Blue – Freeze Spray/Ice Vortex/Snow Boulder
  • Yellow – Plutonium Mine/ Toxic Cloud/Toxic Cesspool
  • Light Green – Jumpstart/Super Charger/Warp

If you hit the stats in the main menu (in the favourites bit) you will be given a list of what you have used! You do not need to hit an enemy with one, just use it!

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/1105/25.jpg The Drifter (B)

Drift 1,000 times in total

To Drift, hold down the :cross: button and point in the direction of the corner, like any karting game really. This won't be too much trouble, I had completed over 3,000 by the end of my career! (Check you progress in the stats page in the favourites menu at the main base menu). If you are behind, use my track - My PSN ID: phish1987

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/1105/29.jpg Cashing In (B)

Cash in an Item Pod 50 times

When you receive an item that you do not want, hold :triangle: down for 2 seconds and it will be cashed in for a bit of boost in you boost meter. Do it 50 times and the trophy is yours.

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/1105/32.jpg Bruiser (B)

Get a total of 200 takedowns

Using either a sideswipe or a weapon, take out an opponent. I got this around my third tour. Just try to get a couple of sideswipes at the start of the race when you are grouped!

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/1105/33.jpg Aggro Racer (B)

Sideswipe 75 opponents

Using the right stick, you can flick it right or left respective of what side of you your opponent is on. They must be pretty close or it will throw you off course a little.

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/1105/37.jpg Startline Booster (B)

Successfully boost off the line 20 times

Again like in most Karting games, you can boost from the start. I found that if you start to accelerate just as the start light goes green to begin, you will boost. You need to be getting these to beat those developer times. You can check your progress in the game stats in the favourites menu (at the base menu).

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/1105/24.jpg Drifting Superstar (B)

Earn 100,000 drift points in one drift

Win an action race in Career without using any boost or boost pads of any type

This needs to be on an action race. An action race is one with weapons so this counts out the first few races. It depends on the type of racer you are but I got it on Tour 1 Race 4. The opponents don't take the shortcuts so this is an easy one.

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/1105/27.jpg Pacifist (B)

Win an action race in Career without firing any weapons

Just make sure you keep cashing in your boost. I got this on Tour 1 - Race 4.

GLITCHED

There are reports of this trophy glitching and not popping when it should but don't give up as it will pop eventually, though most likely at around 120,000 XP (credit to corsaftw for this info).

This will be difficult and will highly likely be the last trophy you get. You level up by gaining XP, to gain XP you must get people to download your stuff and then rate it for more. The higher the rating, the better your XP increase will be.

There are three ways to go about it:

Method 1: Really lazy, just build stuff, publish it, cross your fingers and pray. Check it in a year or so and you might have got enough XP.

Method 2: Do something unique, make it funny or interesting and remember, the upload picture is what needs to look interesting.

Method 3: Join a download-4-download forum like most people do but please be honest. If someone rates you then rate them back, don't be selfish!

To reach level 28 you will need to have earned 100,000XP, this will likely, if you have used all of your creation slots, take around 30 downloads and votes per creation so get creative.

Also, if you are creating and publishing just for the XP, then make all of your creation slots ModRacers. This means that people can download your creations much quicker. I have a dodgy connection so the time difference between downloading a ModRacer and a ModTrack can be 30-60secs, which can be a long time when having to download 20 of peoples creations!

Here is the link to this site's D4D thread: http://www.playstationtrophies.org/forum/modnation-racers-road-trip/147383-download-4-download-vita.html and here's one for the normal boosting thread: http://www.playstationtrophies.org/forum/modnation-racers-road-trip/146302-trophy-boosting-thread-read-first-post.html Don't get the two mixed up, please keep all the D4D requests in the D4D thread.

To view your progress, go to the uploads menu screen then view community... click on search by text, enter your PSN name and hit search. Find an upload that is yours and hit view creation info, then from there hit view creator card, this shows all your XP they have ever earned.

Nice Guide.

Just remember though that you can never go into too much detail.

For instance for the Tutorial Trophy, go ahead and list all the races that have tutorials.

I'll even help with this one:

Tour 1: Race 1, Race 2, and Race 3

Tour 2: Race 6 and Race 7

Tour 3: Race 13

Thanks for the pointer! When I get home this afternoon I will give it a good second read and see what I can add!

I am new to the guide writing but I am trying ! [=

Guys, I am a trophy guide writing newbie... I hope you can't tell too much from reading the guide!

I have only done two before, one I didnt know I had to submit it so someone copied it and got it stuck... lol and the other is for Ben 10 racing (ps3 version).

So if there is any advice you can give to make this guide better I would really appreciate it!

Thanks guys!

PS, if you message me I will download and vote on your tracks if you do the same! but please message to PSN (phish1987)

Do not assume that everyone has an easy time finding the tokens. There are a few I cant find. And like it or not collectibles are a part of this guide.

1 star for ignoring this.

Well that is a bit "arsey"!

A simple private message would suffice, then I could look at writing it! I am still looking for the last bits of XP, then I can delete game data and find them again for the guide.

But how.... master guide writer... would you personally suggest describing points in the tracks for all the collectables....

And was the rest of the guide shite, or was the one star purely on the basis of missing info on about 1.6% of the trophies.

A little lack of construction in your methods, message me and I can look into doing it, it is only my second f****** guide!

Good day to you sir

Is this confirmed? In my experience this ain't true!

I think the online trophies could be more specific with maybe just a step for it? Other than that, i good guide, but i must mention one thing.

To unlock the next tour you simply need to place in the top three overall

Not quite true, you must actually complete a specific amount of points in order to open the next round.

Not that i give much a damn because you must beat all 1st either way. But thought it was nice poiting that out.

Overview:

-Estimated trophy difficulty: 6/10 (Platinum Difficulty Thread), 5/10 (my opinion)

-Total Trophies: 47

-Offline: (28 (B), 6 (S), 1 (G))

-Online: (8 (B), 1 (S), 2 (G), 1 (P))

-Approximate time to Platinum: 20+ Hours (Depending on skill)

-Minimum number of playthroughs: 1 but more likely each race will be completed approx three times

-Number of missable trophies: None

-Glitched trophies: None reported yet.

-Does difficulty affect trophies: Nope!

I think you should add a section explaining the need for 2 vitas. For me this is the same as needing peripherals...also other vita games that have his same need have it menioned up front (table top tanks for example).

You don't need two Vitas. That's like saying for any PS3 multiplayer game, you need more than one PS3. Vita is not a peripheral, and so the likelyhood of anyone having more than one, is kind of slim.

Credit to CajunShooter for the following list of races with tutorials in:

  • Tour 1: Race 1, Race 2 and Race 3
  • Tour 2: Race 6 and Race 7
  • Tour 3: Race 13

Okay, if i may add, for this trophy you must also complete the tutorial inside the "Time Trial", might save some people a lot of time.

Ok well I was under the impression that for the ad hoc trophies you need to be in close proximity with another vita. If this is true then for some it effectively means owning another vita. I don't know anyone but me that has one and I have never seen anyone playing one either. So my only chance of getting an ad hoc trophy is to buy a second vita. That was the point I was trying to make. But if there is another way then please tell me.
