Guide to destroy VR Mission 18 [Video/Screens]

this will show you how to reach wave 3 in 60 seconds and take down the fenrir within 80-90 seconds, which basically means you won the mission as the rest is a joke

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y4qeZwvWi64]VR Mission 18 completely destroyed in 3:44 [Metal Gear Rising Reveneance/PS3] - YouTube[/ame]

first, memorize the corners for the spawn locations (i called them A,B,C and D, clockwise from the starting position)

http://www.abload.de/img/18aq1xt0.jpg

kill the first wave however you like, i prefer to perfect parry the leg sweep but he will most likely use his rush 90% of the time

http://www.abload.de/img/18b2ixya.jpg

when the first wave is down, run to corner C and face it

http://www.abload.de/img/18cp8yxk.jpg

http://www.abload.de/img/18dvczmo.jpg

turn the camera to see the next wave spawn between A and B

http://www.abload.de/img/18ersby5.jpg

the mastiffs (gorillas) will always jump to the right side, follow them with the camera

http://www.abload.de/img/18fjlzgg.jpg

when they jump towards you, perfect parry them (this is really really easy to time and it will always hit both)

http://www.abload.de/img/18gqdxyj.jpg

if you trigger the zandatsu move the twirl should kill the other mastiff too, but sometimes raiden can't hit him if he jumps back or something

now comes the fun part, wave 3 spawns between B and C, try to stand around here when they spawn

http://www.abload.de/img/18h4uy06.jpg

this will force the fenrir (wolf) to throw his projectiles at you, you don't need any luck for that, he will do it 100% of the time unless you are standing wrong

we want him to throw projectiles because it's an instant kill for the hammer guys if they are hit with it, so walk behind the hammer guy close to you to bring him in the line of fire (don't forget to block!)

http://www.abload.de/img/18iqpbzp.jpg

http://www.abload.de/img/18j4myul.jpg

and he's down. if you get super lucky the fenrir can kill both if they are close but it's not required

http://www.abload.de/img/18kbty6p.jpg

now hunt down the wolf at all costs, don't let him out of your sight, if he charges his laser or jumps on a wall outside your view you are dead

he will constantly try his wall jump attack, so when you see him glowing red, punish him with a perfect parry (you can also hit him 1000 times but watch out for the other hammer guy)

http://www.abload.de/img/18l56bkn.jpg

http://www.abload.de/img/18mm2bvv.jpg

wave 4 are only 3 dwarf gekkos in the middle of the room, kill 2 and change to your sai

wave 5 is just a single GRAD which will spawn between D and A

http://www.abload.de/img/18n50boi.jpg

your sai will charge faster than he can recover from the stun, so just stun loop him

http://www.abload.de/img/18o7aliy.jpg

if you want to beat the mission in under 3 minutes you can try to perfect parry the GRAD, but why would anyone risk his run run for that? i sure didn't :p

hope this helps some people, the mission really is not that bad

Great guide. I also discovered that corner trick for the Mastiffs on my own and it does indeed work 100% of the time. It's just a matter of keeping your bearings. If you kind of face the wall to your right once they've begun their wall jump attack, they will usually land with their backs facing it which reduces the chance of the second Mastiff jumping out of the way of your execute getting you an insta kill on him. It makes really the only tricky part to this VR mission dealing with the Fenrir. Perfect parry is definitely your best bet there.

idk why u say is same difficulty as challenge 6 in vanquish.

I honestly had more trouble with Mission 19 than this one. And I don't think any of them were anywhere near the difficulty of Vanquish Challenge 6. Completing challenge 6 took way more practice and skill than any of these. Still it's a decent challenge for sure.

This will certainly be helpful to anyone struggling. I didn't think this mission was so bad. For wave two I usually stayed at the left and only one Mastiff jumped, but good to know you can get both consistently regardless, it seems you'll get at least one that jumps no matter what. I was pretty inconsistent at getting the wolf to kill the hammer guys so when I finally cleared this I had to deal with both hammer guys standing. They didn't actually take that long to kill with the polearm and I finished with more than enough time to spare.

Go to hell wave 3. I've been attempting you for 2 days. I guess I just dont have the skills for this one.

Oh and one other thing, no way a friggin dwarf gekko in the way can momentarily stop a charging gekko. NOT POSSIBLE. That gekko would run the thing over, not pause begind it and hit me just as the block is down. BS!

Ok I just got this an hour ago.

I've never been good with the perfect-parry, but it came through in the end.

Eventually got Wave 1 & 2 down to a science. I followed the guide for the start of wave 3. Could normally get the hammer guy on the right killed with the wolf's throwing knifes. The hardest part was keeping track of the wolf. In the end my method was pretty much run around the exterior of the field and keep the camera panned to the center. The remaining hammer guy and the dwarfs all congregated there while I ran around. So about the wolf. It only attempted 3 attack types because of the running. The laser, the "claw", and that twirling-death-missle-tackle-thing. If the laser started to charge, I b-lined it there, if you get close to the wolf, he knocks it off. As long as I kept running, his claw attack never contacted. I was victorious when it tried the twirling-death-missle-tackle-thing. He missed the first try (because of my frantic running) and I knew he usually follows up with one or two more. So I stopped after the first miss and got ready for the second attack. Luckily got the perfect parry and ended the wolf. (the other way I beat him was with combos I layed on him after I rushed his laser charging. It takes a little more time, but if you got to Wave 3 quick, and you use the Sai method on Wave 5, you can still finish with loads to spare)

Another benifit to the running around is the wolf had to jump over all the enemies in the center, and that slowed him down and gave me time to realize he was getting close to make a move of some sort.

This method worked pretty well. I managed to defeat the wolf several times using it, but got caught by a hammer to the face, or back later on. Believe me, that really made me mad. To get the hardest part over with, then die.

Sorry for the log winded post, but I hope my misfortunes help others.

Thanks for this guide! It made this mission much more manageable. Surprisingly I failed on the GRAD once I got to him because I didn't know you had to wait for the Sai to turn purple before it would stun lock for the longest time lol. I was so frustrated wondering why I couldn't stun lock the GRAD and died to it at least 3 times.

Thanks man! VR18 was the last one I needed for the (G) trophy. I messed up at the GRAD so had to improvise, but I got it. Final time was barely within the time limit...

Now, back to trying to S-Rank/no damage Monsoon  I hate this fight...

EDIT: Just beat him  total fluke, but a win is a win :)

Is there any way I can dodge the lasers?

If i run, It doesn't seem to work. If i dodge, Since it shoots like a billion lasers, while i'm dodging either the heavy's catch up to me and hit me, or a damn dwarf gekko grabs on to me and i get killed.

Any tips/help on that?

Edit : Not required anymore! I beat the mission :D!

is there a way to dodge the wolf's laser attck? that attack is so cheap its not even funny 99.9999% of my deaths are because of wolf's lasr attack

EDIT:40 min after i posted i finally beat VR18.

about the wolfs laser attack, i didnt figure out how to dodge it. i got a really lucky wave lol, almost messed up wave 5 too.

Thanks jigsaw for the awesome guide! I finally did it xD

I thought something was wrong with your guide because the fenrir would never throw the daggers at me, but then I realized I was standing one line to close to him :D

He ended up butchering the 2 heavy cyborgs :)

I have not been this infuriated with a game since Shadow of the Colossus HD's HTA #3 in late '11. This is absolute, utter bull****. -_-

Beat it after another 25 minutes of retries. All in all it probably took more than 150 minutes worth. Tactical Mission 6 didn't piss me off as much as this did. I get that TM6 is harder, but I never, ever died UNFAIRLY. Key word there. THIS God-DAMN 18 though was cheaper than second-hand aeroplane headphones on or darkest of Fridays. -_- Too often I died because the camera wasn't going where I wanted it, enemies were out of frame, enemies would charge as a dwarf pounced on me, or a Dwarf blocked me or the charge moves that are easy to counter. Heck, I was so close to beating round 3 a few times but I'd get stuck or become immobile against a surviving Hammer dude. If I wasn't so relieved I'd break the damn disc.
