Introduction:

Man vs Wild is a survival game based on the television show on the Discovery Channel. There is one training level and five episodes. There is a completion trophy for each of these. There is also one trophy for reaching a certain level and one for not becoming incapacitated (potentially glitched, see Born Survivor for more info). The rest of the trophies are collectibles so expect to spend much more time in the Collectible Thread.

Walkthrough:

Step 1 - Complete the game and get all the collectibles

There are five chapters plus a tutorial level. You can play on normal difficulty. Each episode (excluding the training level) has a number of collectible sets within them. There are two or three sets of collectibles in each episode. If you don't get all of the collectibles within a specific set during each level, you will need to use Episode Select to go back and get them. They do not save after you complete a level so you will need to get each of them again if you miss one. Same is true if you restart a checkpoint or become incapacitated. These are the collectible trophies, by chapter:

Episode 1

(B)Reminders of the Rush

(S)Animal Kingdom

(S)Horticulturist Grylls

Episode 2

(B)Pack Rat Grylls

(B)Bob's Boats

(S)All God's Creatures

Episode 3

(B)Patton Was Here

(S)Osteologist Grylls

(S)These Belong in a Museum

Episode 4

(B)Casted Away

(S)Flight 815

Episode 5

(B)Nice Place You Had Here

(S)Hard to Pronounce, Hard to Find

Please follow the text and video guides in this thread: Collectible Thread. In addition to not missing any collectibles, try to avoid being incapacitated. See Born Survivor for more information. If you do manage to get incapacitated, just remember which chapters it occurs in and you can clean it up in Step 2.

Step 2 - Complete each episode without becoming incapacitated and collectible cleanup

You will need to complete the game without becoming incapacitated for Born Survivor. Try to complete each chapter during your first playthrough without becoming incapacitated. Any episode where you see the "Bear is Incapacitated" screen with the option to exit or continue, will need to be redone. After completing the game the first time, just play any chapter you pass out in through episode select. However, this trophy can glitch. See Born Survivor for more information. For any collectibles that you have failed to complete, this is the time to get them.

Step 3 - Reach the Level 'Bear Grylls'

You gain SP (Survivor Points) for doing certain activities. This includes building fires, making camps and killing animals. You will need 8,000 SPs. The quickest way to level up is to replay the first episode (not the tutorial) and complete as many tricks in the skydiving section. Once on the ground, and after an autosave, you can restart the skydiving section and repeat this until you reached level 8.

EPISODE 5

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/944/17.jpg A Winter's Tale (G)

Complete the 'Patagonia' campaign.

This is story related and can't be missed. It will pop after Episode 5. This episode features a frustrating sequence at the very end. It requires you to balance yourself on a horse while standing up and jumping into a moving train. It's important to note that any failed attempts during this final part will not count against you for Born Survivor, unless you become incapacitated due to the cold or hitting the branches. If your screen starts flashing red you should restart checkpoint.

For this part with the horse, you will need to do two things simultaneously i.e Control the speed of the horse and keep your balance. To control the speed of your horse, you need to hold down :r2:, but not all the way. At the start of this sequence you will need to hold it just right to turn the light green. That's the amount of pressure you need to hold throughout this entire part. The light will disappear once you find the right pressure but keep this held in for the entire duration, even when the light goes off. Some people recommend using a rubber band with the just the right amount of tension with :r2: to keep it steady and consistent.

The second thing you must do is balance yourself, this is accomplished with the left stick. It's not that hard to balance yourself once you know what you're looking for. Use small and gentle movements. The best way to do this is by looking at the bottom of the train. Keep the bottom of the train horizontal on your screen, don't look at Bear or the Horse. Here's an illustration:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v433/mgunner76/MvW.jpg

The final part of this is the jump to the train. Don't make the mistake and attempt the jump the moment you see the prompt. Wait until you are sure the door is open and that your parallel to it. Just because it says jump, it doesn't mean that you will be successful. Make no mistake, this will take several attempts.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/944/18.jpg Nice Place You Had Here (B)

Locate all of the trash in Patagonia.

There are five pieces of trash littered around. Please follow the text and video guides in this thread: Man vs Wild Collectible Guide.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/944/19.jpg Hard to Pronounce, Hard to Find (S)

Find all five Andiperia Willinki bugs in Patagonia.

There are five bugs you must collect. While I can't tell you how to pronounce their names, I can tell you that they are incredibly hard to see. You can be just a few feet from one and not be able to see it, so keep an eye out for the button prompt. Please follow the text and video guides in this thread: Man vs Wild Collectible Guide.

MISCELLANEOUS

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/944/20.jpg Wild, Man! (S)

Complete the 'Base Camp' campaign.

This is story related and can't be missed. You will earn this after you complete the Tutorial level.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/944/21.jpg Bear Grylls (G)

Reach the Level 'Bear Grylls.'

You will earn this trophy one of three ways. Either while going for all the collectibles, going for Born Survivor or you'll have to farm it once you have earned the rest of the trophies. If you have to farm this, I recommend loading up episode 1 and performing the skydiving stunts. As soon as you land you will auto save. Then hit restart and repeat until you earned the required 8,000 Survivor Points for Bear Gyrlls.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/944/22.jpg Born Survivor (G)

Complete all episodes without passing out.

Glitched

This could potentially be a headache. After you have completed the game the first time, you can simply Episode select any chapter you passed out in. You will know when you have passed out when you see "Bear is incapacitated" on your screen with the option to continue or exit. If you die and get respawned without the incapacitated screen, you should be alright. These are ways that you can pass out.

Dehydration

Hunger

Freezing

Hot Steam

Attacked by animals

In theory, you should be able to fall off a cliff, rocks, die in quicksand, fall off the horse at the end, and it "shouldn't" count against you. If you feel like you are about to pass out, immediately hit start and restart checkpoint. As long as you do that before passing out, you'll be fine. If you do get knocked out, there are reports of people claiming that they quickly hit the PSN button and returned to XMB and restarted the game again successfully. That seems to be hit or miss if it works. There are glitch reports where people swear that they haven't died or been incapacitated and the trophy didn't pop. There's a few things you should do to limit the possibility of a glitch.

  • Complete the entire game (including the tutorial) in one sitting. If you have reached the maximum level, then you will have pretty high resistance to the elements and won't get thirsty as fast. You should be able to "carefully" run through the levels.
  • Restart the Chapter if you get incapacitated. You can try the XMB trick, but you won't know if it worked until you complete the game so better safe than sorry and just restart chapter.
  • Answer the quizzes that appear after each episode. While not important to answer correctly, you will get a little SP boost by doing so.
  • If the above didn't work, play on a new save.
  • Worst case scenario, delete your game data and saves and start fresh, then complete the game in one sitting without any kind of deaths, and don't skip the quizzes.

Episode specific things to watch out for:

Episode 1 - Attacks from animals are your biggest threats. Be careful of the Bears and the Puma. Also watch out for your hydration. When you find water, make sure to top of your hydration level and fill the canteen. Both should be full before moving on.

Episode 2 - There's plenty of water so there isn't much worry about hydration here but keep an eye on it, especially if you get lost in the saw-grass area. Your biggest threat is from the alligators. Avoid them, especially when you're gathering supplies to build the shelter.

Episode 3 - The only real challenge is not to get dehydrated. Avoid sprinting at all. There's only a couple places to refill water, so make sure you drink enough to refill your hydration bar and then refill your canteen to 100% before moving on. When you get thirsty, drink only enough to refill you halfway.

Episode 4 - This episode's biggest challenge is crossing some fallen logs above lava where hot steam shoots out at you. You won't instantly become incapacitated from the steam, but it quickly lowers your health. When you reach the steam and log combo, try to have full health. Cross the first log up until the steam and wait for the steam to stop before crossing. Then you'll have one more to contend with, this time with two steam showers along a single log. You will most likely take a little health damage on that last log, so if you're low on health you may as well restart checkpoint. Also, watch out for sharks when you're in the water.

Episode 5 - This has a couple tricky parts. The first is the ice sheets that you must jump across. If you miss your jump, you can swim to the opposite side and there is a place to get out of the water on the right. The second part that can possibly trip you up is in the ice cave when you are instructed to use the leg to look for thin ice. When you equip it, move really slow for Bear to check for thin ice. The final thing this is that you can become incapacitated when you are on the horse if you hit the branches or succumb to the cold. When your screen turns red, hit restart checkpoint to avoid being knocked out.

great guide, but does the training level count towards the born survivor aswell?

Also i got knocked down by the black bear in the everglades, but managed to press start to bring up the pause menu, so haven't seen the "bear is incapacitated" screen, if i select restart checkpoint will it not count the black bear bit?

EDIT

i went on to complete that level, was the last one i needed, trophy didn't pop, played it again without getting the pass out screen at all, still didn't pop, but i missed the final jump onto the helicopter, do they really matter?

Also do you really have to redo the quizzes on a level when you clear it without passing out, even if you already took the quiz the first time you played the level?

I'm not sure that the training level counts, but it shouldn't be that difficult to complete that without passing out.

The final jump onto the helicopter shouldn't matter. Anytime that the game automatically respawns you, you should be fine. As for the quizzes, always take them. Don't ever skip them. It only takes a minute to do them anyways.

Re-posting from the previous guide, in case anyone needs more details:

About the ending part of episode 5 (on horse, catching up with train, balancing and jumping onboard), like many people, I've had lots of problem with it too. I read all the posts and, based on my experience, I just want to summarize them in great lengths (lol, 'summarize'):

1. After avoiding the trees, you get near the train. The animation will show Bear (riding horse) catching up with the train. You will be prompted to "hold R2 at the sweetspot".

2. There is a red dot at the bottom center of the screen. This dot cannot be moved. (At first I thought I have to move left or right stick to get a cursor, which I cannot see, to within this red dot, like in a couple of mini-games in this game.) It's just an indicator that changes color (red, brown, green, I think there's white too, and it blinks). Forget about this dot, don't even bother looking at it. This red spot is not the 'sweet spot' mentioned in the prompt.

3. There's a door on the train that keeps opening and closing (but not closing all the way, so there is one part of the doorway in front that is always opened). You have to basically get within range of the door (the whole door, not just the front part that is always opened). This is the sweet spot. If you have vibration turned on, your controller will rumble when you are there.

4. Remember, R2 is pressure sensitive. Do not press R2 all the way down. Doing so will make your horse gallop forward and over shoot the door. Instead, press R2 half way down and hold it like that. You do not have to keep adjusting R2 (pressing it harder or softer) to stay within the 'sweet spot'. (Someone gave a great suggestion of using a rubberband to hold R2 down half way. When you first capture the horse, balance on it and it starts running for the first time, press Start to pause the game and place the rubberband. You do not have to remove it, even if you fail and automatically retry, until the episode is over.) The red dot will change color, eventually it turns green and the vibration turns off. You will get a prompt to balance Bear by moving the left stick to left or right. Very important: do not release R2, continue to hold it half way down; do not press any harder on it (in attempt to run forward to catch up with the always-opened part of the door).

5. Through the whole game you were taught to read the camera tilt as indicator of which side you are leaning towards (even just a few seconds ago when you first captured the horse, it's the same). Yet here the camera is always tilted (it has to show you the train, its door, Bear, the horse), it's absolutely useless trying to tell whether you are balanced from the camera angle. Looking at Bear doesn't help much either. Luckily it seems the balance/tilt is fixed, you just have to find it and stick to it, no need to keep adjusting. Some suggested moving the left stick up, some suggested moving it just slightly to the left. What works for me repeatedly is doing both: hold the left stick at the 11 o'clock position. (It is much easier to hold it like that than to hold it a little, but not too much, to the left. If 11 o'clock doesn't work for you, try adjusting it a bit, maybe 10:30, but certainly not 9. 9 will mean pushing it left, 12 means pushing it up.) You can actually start holding it at this position from the animation in Step 1. This way Bear will maintain balance and successfully stand up on the horse.

6. Next you will be prompted to press X to jump when the train door opens. Do not press it immediately, wait for the door to open all the way. (Some say wait 3 seconds. Just to be safe, wait for it to open and close a couple of times.) At the right moment, press X (remember, still holding R2 half way down, still holding left stick at 11 o'clock), Bear jumps onto the train, the end.

The short(er) version: Get near the train, animation starts showing Bear catching up with train. When animation starts, do 2 things immediately: hold R2 half way down (never let go, or press harder, till Bear gets onto train) and hold left stick all the way in 11 o'clock direction (again, never let go). Wait for prompt "press X when door opens", do so.

First off, this is a really !@#$%!@#$% stupid @#$ game. But I am an idiot and bought it so I have to finish it. I feel like I am missing something. How do I escape the deserted island? I keep rowing and rowing and the sharks keep coming and coming until my health is gone and I am dead. WTF am I missing here?

Edit: NVM, it was even dumber than I expected.

Patagonia beginning is even worse. This game offers zero insight into what I am doing wrong and what they expect me to do. Spent 30 minutes flying high, flying low, flying against the wind, flying with the wind...no clue what the game wants me to do. It's just hit the mountain over and over again.
