Introduction

Magic: The Gathering (commonly referred to as Magic or MTG) is an established trading card game since 1993 and now makes its way to the Playstation 3. Players will start with a basic deck of cards that follows a certain theme and duel against the AI opponents in offline Single Player or Co-op Campaign, or Online against other players using a variety of creatures and spells summoned from the deck. As you win, more decks and cards can be unlocked and you will be able to customise your deck to a certain extent. The basic objective of each duel is to reduce your opponent's life to zero, or make them run out of cards to draw, though there are other means to victory.

There is an ingame tutorial available, but to be really proficient at playing MTG you will need far more than that. For newcomers to MTG, some useful links are provided below and it is up to your own initiative to play, experiment and refine your skills.

Roadmap

Being a trading card game, there is no one way or best way to go about the game given the endless possibilities of ingame situations and combinations possible in MTG. It all comes down to which set of cards suits your personality, playstyle and your knowledge of the opponent's deck as well as your own.

Step 1: Complete Single Player Campaign

The Core Game's Campaign has a total of 16 Duels and you need to win all of them to unlock Epic Conclusion trophy. Also try to work on Life Preserver while going through the campaign.

Step 2: Complete Co-Op Campaign

You may play the offline Co-Op Campaign with a friend on the same console or by yourself with two controllers. There are 14 Duels in the Co-Op Campaign. Do refer to Master of Artifice trophy for tips.

Step 3: Complete Challenges

8 Challenges are available that throw you into tight situations right away and your task is figure out a solution to avoid defeat and/or achieve victory on the same turn. Do refer to Puzzling Master trophy for details. You will also have unlocked Devastator at the end of this step.

Step 4: Complete Online Trophies and Planswalker

Select "Play Magic: The Gathering on Playstation Network" to play online. Win 5 Ranked Matches for Duelist, 1 Game of Two-Headed Dragon for Defender of Foriys, and an additional 4 matches (total of 10 matches) of any type for Duel Master. Spellsinger is a viral trophy and you will need to seek out someone who currently has it and beat him. The last one you need is most likely Planeswalker, you can either keep playing and win against the AI or find a boosting partner to work on this which will reduce your required playing time to achieve 100% significantly.

Step 5: Complete DLC: Expansions 1, 2, 3

For those of you with the DLCs, each Expansion introduces more Campaign duels, Challenges, Additional Decks and more Unlockable Cards as well as 3 trophies for each expansion. Do refer to the following guides for each DLC

CORE GAME TROPHY GUIDE

Win a game

Achieve victory in any Single Player or Multiplayer game to unlock this trophy.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/824/02.jpg Life Preserverhttp://www.ps3trophies.org/images/site/icons/trophy_bronze.png

Increase your life total to 30 or more in single player, or 60 or more in Two-Headed Giant

This is easily done in Single Player. You will start off with 20 life so you just need to gain an extra 10 life. This can be easily done by playing a Custom Duel against AI, using a Green "Teeth of the Predator" deck against Garruk or Nissa while having a couple of Wurm's Tooth (Gain 1 life for each Green spell) in play. Garruk plays a Green deck, whereas Nissa plays a Black-Green deck. All you need to do is to block any attacks and play Natural Spring (Gain 8 life) when you have it for an easy trophy.

Deal 20 combat damage to a player in a single turn in a game

As the the trophy says, you must deal a total of 20 damage to a player in a single turn. The 20 damage can be spread across any way you like, through the use of spells, abilities and/or creature(s). This can be easily obtained in the second campaign battle or a Custom Duel against AI using the Green "Teeth of the Predator" deck, just play lots of lands and creatures, Blanchwood Armor, Overrun, and Giant Growth to increase your attack also keep up some pressure by attacking periodically forcing him to block and sacrifice his creatures.

You will also automatically achieve this trophy for clearing Challenge 7 as this challenge requires you to do deal 26 damage in a single turn to win. See Puzzling Master for details.

Defeat Tezzeret in the final single-player campaign battle

There are 16 Duels in the Single Player core campaign and you must win the first duel to unlock the next one and so on. Playing on Mage (Easy) difficulty definately speeds up the pace as opposed to playing on Planeswalker (Hard) difficulty.

You will get a first taste of Tezzeret's Blue-Black deck in Battle 14. I used the default Green "Teeth of the Predator" deck, took out all unneeded cards that I unlocked previously like Masimo, Wurm's Tooth to keep my deck card count low and didn't have any problems facing him. He plays alot of artifacts and creatures that compliment them and if he gets 3 of the 2/1 creatures out it'll be a race to see who can whittle down the opponent's life first.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/824/10.jpg Master of Artificehttp://www.ps3trophies.org/images/site/icons/trophy_silver.png

Defeat Tezzeret the Seeker & Sarkhan Vol in the cooperative campaign

Select "Play Magic: The Gathering" then select "Co-Op Campaign". This is just like the Single Player Campaign except you now play with a friend beside you (or with 2 controllers) against 2 AI opponents. There are 14 Duels and again you must beat the first one to unlock the next and so forth. Tezzeret & Sarkhan are the final pair in this Campaign. Playing on Mage (Easy) will help alot as on harder difficulties both AI players are smarter and can string together card combos and effects that leave you frustrated.

Tips:

1. Always remember to use :square: to stop the timer to give you time to evaluate your options and analyze the situation, especially if you're playing by yourself with two controllers. Its kind of overwhelming to manage two decks, two separate hands and mana pools and keep track of two opponents all at the same time by yourself. (Having a wide 40" HDTV still does not help by the way )

2. Use complimentary combinations of decks based on the each deck's color & playstyle, such as Red-Green (Direct Damage/Aggro), Black-Green (Destruction/Aggro), Blue-White (Control/Protection). You can also checkout the deck compositions in the website below and determine what your opponent has and what deck you should play as or avoid. Clicking on individual card names on the site will bring up a new page with details of the card.

3. Ensure you have enough lands in BOTH hands from the start otherwise pause and restart the duel. The mana pool is NOT shared (i.e player 2 cannot tap player 1's lands for mana). Having 1 player with insufficient lands effectively renders him useless (Mana Screw or Mana Short in MTG Jargon) as he can't play anything and the other player will have an uphill task of battling against the 2 AI players on his own until the other player gets lucky and starts drawing lands.

4. Both players in a team share the same pool of lifepoints, and one player's creatures may be used to defend his partner from attack.

5. Creature abilities are affected by the entire play situation. Although each player will have a direct opponent, your creature's abilities such as Forestwalk and Fear can be applied or nullified by the other partner.

Example 1: You are matched directly against Garruk, and your partner against Liliana. You have a creature with Swampwalk (unblockable as long as opponent has a swamp in play). Garruk doesn't have swamps, but Liliana has. Therefore your creature is unblockable by both opponents.

Example 2: You have a creature with Fear (unblockable except by Black or Artifact Creatures). Garruk doesn't have any of these creatures, but Liliana might have one in play, so your creature can be blocked by Liliana.

Complete a challenge

See Puzzling Master below.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/824/09.jpg Puzzling Masterhttp://www.ps3trophies.org/images/site/icons/trophy_silver.png

Complete all challenges

Select "Play Magic: The Gathering" then select "Challenge" to access a list of 8 challenges available for you to test your wits in various difficult situations. These challenges will test your ability to analyze, strategize and execute your plan to earn victory in one turn or suffer defeat. If you stuck with a particular challenge, do refer to Rappappar's excellent Challenge Guide.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/824/06.jpg Spellslingerhttp://www.ps3trophies.org/images/site/icons/trophy_bronze.png

Defeat someone who has earned the Spellslinger trophy

This is a Viral trophy and you will need to defeat any player that has unlocked it. Seek out the Trophy Boosting Thread if you need help with it

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/824/05.jpg Defender of Foriyshttp://www.ps3trophies.org/images/site/icons/trophy_bronze.png

Win a Two-Headed Giant game

Select "Play Magic: The Gathering on Playstation Network" then Player or Ranked Match choose to host or join a Two Headed Dragon game. This is basically a 2v2 mode similiar to the Co-Op Campaign and can be either played by having 4 individual players separated into 2 teams, or played by you and a guest player on your console against another opponent and his guest player.

This can also be unlocked for attaining victory in any Co-Op Campaign Duel. Credits to S3xnStilletos.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/824/07.jpg Duelisthttp://www.ps3trophies.org/images/site/icons/trophy_bronze.png

Win 5 ranked PlayStation Network matches

Select "Play Magic: The Gathering on Playstation Network" then Ranked Match and choose to host or join a current game. There are 4 types of Ranked Matches: 2 player Versus, 3 and 4 player Free for All, and Two Headed Dragon (2v2) matches. Playing alot and having good observation skills, and obviously a good balanced deck will increase your chances of winning.

If you're poor at the game, then you can boost this by hosting a Ranked Match and have a friend keep joining until he finds you. There aren't alot of people playing online so it will be easy to find each other. Start the game and have one player pause and select "Concede Game" and repeat as needed. Trophy Boosting Thread

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/824/11.jpg Duels Masterhttp://www.ps3trophies.org/images/site/icons/trophy_silver.png

Win 10 PlayStation Network matches

All you need to do is win a total of 10 matches of any game type online. You will have won 6 games if you've done Defender of Foriys and Duelist trophies above, so just win 4 more games in either Player or Ranked matches.

Unlock 100%

This trophy is a little tricky. Basically you need to have complete the Single-Player and Two-Headed Dragon (Co-Op) Campaign, the Challenges, and unlocked all the cards for each deck. Each time you win a game of any type in Single Player or Multiplayer, you will unlock a card for the deck you're currently using. Certain decks are unlocked upon completing the Single Player Campaign. You can press :triangle: in the main menu to see a list of decks you've unlocked, number of cards unlocked for each deck, as well as change decks and/or customize them to a very limited extent.

Now here comes the tricky part, at the bottom of main menu you will see a % counter that indicates your total unlock progress. The problem is, this counter tracks your overall unlock progress of the Core Game AND DLC if you have it. If you had 90% in the Core Game and decided to install all 3 DLC, your unlock progress tracker will drop to somewhere about 40%. So if you have installed DLC, you obviously have much more to do by completing more campaigns, challenges and even more Decks to unlock and complete.

My advice is to complete 100% of the Core Game before installing any DLC if you want to save ALOT of time.

Note: I can confirm that you can delete the game if you have DLC installed, reinstall the Core Game only then work on this trophy. Don't worry your save file will still contain your DLC progress. As soon as the counter hits 100% the trophy will unlock. Sometimes the game will round up your progress from 90+ % to 100% even if you have not unlocked everything. I had one more deck to complete when the trophy unlocked. You can then re-download your DLCs from PSN store and work on the expansions if you like.

One method of boosting this is to create an online match and trade wins with another player by having one side concede the game upon starting. The winner will continue to unlock cards for the deck he is using, but first he should make sure he has unlocked all the decks via Single Player Campaign.

Defeat Nicol Bolas in the single player campaign (Duel the Dragon)

Expansion Pack 1 introduces 5 additional campaign duels and Nicol Bolas is the 5th and final opponent you will battle against. Defeat him to unlock this. Take note that he has the Platinum Angel artifact creature card (Controller of this card cannot lose the duel, and the opponent cannot win the duel) in his deck and if you reduce his life to 0 while this card is in play, you lose instead. The "Ears of the Elves" deck is a good deck to use and also has Naturalize (destroy target artifact or enchantment) that can be used to get rid of Platinum Angel.

spacer.png Overkill spacer.png

Control creatures with a total power of 75 or more (Duel the Dragon)

This is easily done with the "Ear of the Elves" deck. The key cards you should have in the deck are:

Immaculate Magistrate (Tap, Put a +1/+1 counter on target creature for each Elf you control)

Coat of Arms (Each creature gets +1/+1 for each other creature in play that shares at least one creature type with it)

Other useful cards are Elvish Champion, Jagged-Scar Archers, Imperious Perfect, Nath of the Gilt-Leaf. This deck is full of Elf Creatures and you should be looking to play as many of them as possible. When you have Immaculate Magistrate out, just stall the game and use his ability every turn until your creatures have a combined total power of 75 and the trophy will unlock. Tokens also count as creatures. I did this against Jace Beleren in the second duel of this expansion.

Earn Puzzling Master and complete all Duel the Dragon expansion challenges

There are 3 new challenges that come with Expansion 1. Please refer Rappappar's excellent Challenge Guide if you are stuck. You also need to have earned Puzzling Master in the Core Game trophy set.

Defeat Sorin Markov in the single-player campaign (Expansion 2)

Expansion Pack 2 introduces 8 additional campaign duels and Sorin Markov is the 4th and also 8th opponent you will battle against. Defeat him to unlock this. He plays a very aggressive mono-black Vampire deck that uses alot of low cost creatures with abilities that compliment each other and can easily overwhelm you in the first 5 turns if you don't have any creatures/spells to defend with. You also need a really good hand to beat him, so it'll take a couple of restarts. I used the "Heat of Battle" deck for this duel.

Some pointers from Tigerlust:

• Using the White deck, Wings of Light, make sure to unlock bonus cards to get Wrath of God, and some Mass Calcify's.

• This deck has a number of creatures with First Strike ability and they are useful for blocking and eliminating attackers without losing your creatures. Notable creatures are Paladin en-Vec and Voice of All which have protection from Black and thus immune to whatever Sorin throws at you

• Having some Luminesce/HolyDay's will come in handy early on by nullifying any damage you receive.

• When his hand is depleted or if you are threatened by a Nocturnal Vampire, drop a Wrath of God/Mass Calcify Bomb and the setback for him will be more staggering than it is for you.

spacer.png Tsunami of Pain spacer.png

Deal 12 combat damage to an opponent in a single attack with one blue creature

1. Select the deck "Relics of Doom", remove all extra unlocked cards except for any Master of Etherium (Power/Toughness equal to number of artifacts you control) cards you have unlocked. There is only 1 copy of this card in the basic deck but you can unlock up to an additional 3 copies by winning with this deck in any type of duel. I played using the basic deck only as Step 4 below will solve this little issue.

2. Choose Custom Duel, press

:square: to access an advanced options screen. Set both player's lives to 40, your starting hand size to 9 and AI hand size to 5. Choose Gideon or Garruk as your opponent. Start the game and mulligan/restart until you have Master of Etherium or Sharding Sphinx in your starting hand. Having both will speed things up alot quicker.

3. Play as many artifacts as you can. Save your Terror (destroy target non-black creature) for getting rid of any opponent creatures that are above 4/4.

4. If playing against Garruk, ensure you have enough mana and the card Cancel (counter target spell) in hand to nullify Howl of the Night Pack (add 2/2 token into play for every Forest) when he plays it because it will stall the game for too long if he manages to play it

5. If you have Sharding Sphinx attack with it to generate a 1/1 artifact tokens, then next turn hold your sphinx back and instead slowly whittle down your opponent's health with the tokens which will create even more tokens, but don't kill off the AI.

6. Play Master of Etherium when you have it, and use it to attack the enemy, getting rid of blockers if there are any present. Any tokens generated by Sharding Sphinx will also contribute towards increasing Master of Etherium's power/toughness. When this card eventually deals direct damage of 12 points to the enemy player, the trophy will unlock.

Alternatively you can use Jace's "Thoughts of Wind" deck and include Sphinx of Magosi in it, which is the last unlockable card (Win 25 times with this deck to unlock). Play against Gideon and restart until you have Sphinx of Magosi in hand then play normally until you get the Sphinx into play. Use the Sphinx's ability (3 mana: Draw a card and put a +1/+1 counter on Sphinx) to beef it up then attack with it.

The other option is to boost this by using the same deck against your partner, and have your partner do nothing while you draw and beef up Master of Etherium and attack with it.

spacer.png Salt in the Wound spacer.png

An opponent's last permanent leaves the battlefield

Follow the steps below:

1. Select the deck "Thoughts of Wind", remove all extra unlocked cards if you have them to increase your chances of drawing Boomerang (Return target permanent to its owner's hand)

2. Choose Custom Duel, press :square: to access an advanced options screen and set your starting hand size to 9, AI hand size to 5. Choose Chandra Ablaze as your opponent (Credits RappappaR)

3. Start the duel, and mulligan or restart until you are chosen to play first, and you have 2 Islands and 1 Boomerang in your starting hand. On your first turn, play an Island and any other card if you wish.

4. On Chandra's first turn, she will play a Mountain and should end her turn. If she plays any card that stays permanently on the battlefield, restart the duel and repeat from step 3 above.

5. On your next turn, play another Island and cast Boomerang targetting Chandra's sole Mountain, thereby removing all her cards in play. Trophy will unlock.

spacer.png Madness Suppressed spacer.png

Defeat Sarkhan the Mad in the single-player campaign (Expansion 3)

Expansion Pack 3 introduces 8 additional campaign duels and Sarkhan the Mad is the 4th and also 8th opponent you will battle against. Defeat him to unlock this.

He uses a Black-Red deck with small creatures with Deathtouch that he uses the stall the game until he gets his big creatures into play. I use the "Ears of the Elves" deck that has plenty of creatures and buffs so losing a creature or two to get rid of those blockers isn't a problem for me. As an extra note, I tried using Jace's "Thoughts of Wind" deck for this campaign and didn't get far because of its lack of pace, especially against Sorin Markov.

Good stuff. Definitely will do the delete->reinstall for the 100% trophy.

Just thought I'd mention you can still get Overflowing Harvest and also win the match if you use the strategy detailed in my challenge guide. Saves people from having to do it twice. :)

Edit: Also for Tsunami of Pain, it's much easier to use Sphinx of Magosi. Use Jace's Thoughts of the Wind deck and play against Gideon Jura's deck. He has nothing at all that can kill it (he can Excommunicate it but you can just counter it or play the Sphinx again no biggie) and if he tries to Guard Duty it you can either counter it or you can just let him cast it and then Into the Roil the GD on one of your turns and attack with it.

I can't remember wich challenge it was but I earned the Overflowing Harvest trophy completing the challenge. I recall playing a spell that removed all lands from the game and then having the lands return to play on the same turn. If I can remember which challenge it was I'll repond again.

That would be one of the Challenges in Expansion 3, but considering this Overflowing Harvest trophy comes in Expansion 2 and not everyone might buy Expansion 3, I thought it best to put a method that can be done in Expansion 2.

I researched on RappappaR's advice on Tsunami of Pain about using Sphinx of Magosi but problem is there's only one copy of this card in Jace's "Thoughts of Wind" deck and its the last unlockable (so you have to win with Jace's deck 26 times before you get to use it), its a creature that costs 6 to cast, has 6 power and it'll take 3 turns to beef it up to 12/12assuming no threats come your way at all, earliest you can achieve the trophy is only on Turn 9 or 10.

Very good guide. It should look nice once you get the trophy images.

Thanks, I submitted them and just waiting for it to be uploaded

3 small points to add:

For "Salt in the Wound" its better to play Garruk (green deck) because he has no 1 cost permanents to screw things up for you.

For "Tsunami of Pain" you can do this pretty easily with the Relics of Doom deck by equipping a blue creature like Air Elemental with several power boosting equipment artifacts.

For people that don't get DLC 3 they can get "Overflowing Harvest" using the Rhys the Reedemed Green/White Heart of Worlds (Landfall) deck also. It has several cards that allow you to put additional lands into play so there are many ways to get this trophy using that deck. Example: Play your normal land, cast Rampant Growth, sacrifice 2 Evolving Wilds (lands), then cast 2 Harrows for a total of 8 lands in 1 turn.

Defender of Foriys (bronze)

This trophy comes naturally if you play the co-op campaign for 100% trophy. After winning first co-op campaign battle this will unlock. Thought this would be a better way to mention in guide description of how to obtain. ^_~

Thanks for the info. Credits to u

1. Garruk has a few Wall of Wood that costs One Mana

2. Relics of Doom does not have Air Elemental

Deck Lists and Card Unlocks : Duels of the Planeswalkers : Digital Games : Magic: The Gathering

And even if it did, Air Elemental is a 4/4, so I'll need a minimum of 5 Leonin Scimitar (impossible as there are only 3 including unlockables) AND a Loxodon Warhammer (only 1 copy which is an unlockable).

3. The video's method is still the easiest because you already have everything you need on the game board and in your hand, as opposed to waiting until you draw/have the right cards in normal play.

Sorry dude, I have nothing personal against you, but you need to come up with something more concrete.

Have you submitted those images? I have them but am too lazy to submit, since I already have credits for the rest. Figured someone else would want credits as well

Thanks for the great guide and tips.

For the DLC 2 & 3 Campaigns thou, here is some strategy I think would help a lot of people to beat the final bosses. Take some work to unlock cards (easier with a partner, have them concede and each time you get a card), but it makes these battles less overwhelming.

Sorin Markov: Using the original white deck (Wings of Light), make sure to unlock bonus cards to get Wrath of God, and then later some Mass Calcify's. Make sure you have one of those drawn, and Paladin en-Vec or VoiceOfAll are great cards to enchant. Having some Luminesce/HolyDay's come in handy too. When most of his hand cards are used (or right after that Nocturnal vamp comes out), drop the Mass Calcify Bomb on him and you should be able to stake him over the next few turns.

Sarkhan the Mad: Unlock all bonus cards in Scales of Funy. Make sure to draw the "Karrthus, Tyrant of Jund" and then play as normal. Sarky tends to have that guy that drops 5/5 dragons after six lands. Let him drop 2 or 3 of these dragons (depending on your life and defenders), then drop your secret stash (bringing all dragons to your side) and wipe him out!

I checked out the White deck card list and yeah it seems like the perfect anti-deck for Sorin, so I'll add that in. For Sakhan though it still seems a little risky to me, I'm gonna have to test play it a little.

PS: I rephrased what you said about Wings of Light, have a look and see if I got it correct.

Thanks for adding the Sorin strategy, looks good.

Scales of Fury is a powerful late-game deck in it's own, you get some very powerful dragons you can place once you have enough lands out - arguably the third most powerful deck after the overpowered vamps and elves - "Karrthus, Tyrant of Jund" is just a trump card if Sakhan has some dragons out, as they all convert to your side!

You might want to put this in the guide. I found it on the sister site by poster, Shinobi273 as to which deck works best against which deck:

Teeth of the Predator beats itself*

Hands of Flame beats itself*

Claws of Vengence beats Teeth of the Predator

Wings of Light beats Hands of Flame

Thoughts of Wind beats Teeth of the Predator

Eyes of Shadow beats Teeth of the Predator*

Ears of the Elves beats Teeth of the Predator*

Scales of Fury beats Hands of Flame

Mind of Void beats Wings of Light*

Red/Green beats Teeth of the Predator

Blue/Black beats Teeth of the Predator*

Green/White beats Hands of Flame

Heat of Battle beats Hands of Flame*

Red/Blue/Black beats Wings of Light*

*You should be able to win no problem

Thanks but the list focuses only on, arguably the most basic decks:

Teeth of the Predator (Garruk),

Hands of Flame (Chandra), and

Wings of Light (Elspeth Tirel)
