Overview:

  • Trophies: 1 (G) 4 (S) 6 (B) (11, all offline)
  • Difficulty: 8.23/10
  • Time: 20+ hrs
  • Glitched: None
  • Cheats: N/A

Lumines Supernova is a Tetris-style puzzle game that's easy-to-learn, yet difficult-to-master. Earning its trophies is a feat that's reserved for those willing to devote their time to attaining that mastery. There's no easy way to get 100% here other than by getting better, which is the focus of this guide.

100% Road Map:

  • Challenge Mode: Complete one 20-skin cycle of Basic and one 20-skin cycle of Advance.
  • Time Attack Mode: Score 50 points in 60sec, and 210 points in 180sec.
  • Dig Down Mode: Complete all 20 stages.
  • Puzzle Mode: Complete the Easy, Hard and Super Hard puzzle sets.
  • Mission Mode: Complete the Easy, Hard and Super Hard mission sets.

Consult the following trophy guide for detailed tips for completing these requirements.

General Tips:

  • The Basics - Consult "Tips" under the game's "Help" main menu item for basic strategies.
  • If At First You Don't Succeed - Lumines is a deceptively brain-intensive game that focuses as much on pattern recognition as it focuses on motor skills. The more you play, the better you will get at recognizing these patterns and reacting to them.
  • Try, Try Again - Mission Mode aside, the blocks you're given are random. This will have a dramatic impact on your scores, particularly in Time Attack Mode.
  • Diversify - While Challenge Mode is the meat and potatoes of Lumines, the other modes are extremely valuable in perfecting certain aspects of your game: Time Attack for speed, Dig Down for getting out of a jam and Mission Mode for judicious block management.
  • Know Your Enemy - Avoid creating checkerboard patterns...

Challenge Mode Trophies:

Unlock 3 skins in Challenge Mode "Basic".

See "Advance 10"

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/75/001.jpgBasic 10 (B)

Unlock 10 skins in Challenge Mode "Basic".

See "Advance 10"

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/75/002.jpgAdvance 10 (B)

Unlock 10 skins in Challenge Mode "Advance".

Challenge Mode is comprised of 40 skins (read: stages), 20 Basic and 20 Advance, that progressively increase in difficulty. You only need to get halfway through a 20-skin cycle of each to earn these trophies, but full completion of both Basic and Advance is required for the "Skin Master" trophy.

Challenge Mode Tips:

  • Are We Clear? - Start slowly and focus on clearing the board, getting big point bonuses for Single Color / All Cleared bonuses. Remember that the more you allow the board to fill up, the more you risk having your game cut short. Youtuber junkanet provides us with an example of some competent gameplay, featuring some examples of smart, brisk-paced block management.

  • Tower Of Power - Another popular Lumines strategy is to the Tower Method, in which blocks of the same type are separated into columns. 3/1 blocks are placed in a column, checkerboard blocks are placed in another column, and solids and 2/2s are placed together in another. Here I've illustrated how 3/1 and checkerboard blocks fit together:

A place for everything, and everything in its place. Many of the top Lumines players swear by this deterministic strategy.

Time Attack Mode Trophies:

Score 50 points in Time Attack Mode 60sec.

See "Time Attack 210"

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/75/006.jpgTime Attack 210 (S)

Score 210 points in Time Attack Mode 180sec.

Earn the given number of points within the time limit, with 1 delete equalling 1 point. Completion of 300sec and 600sec are not required.

Time Attack Mode Tips:

  • Grace Under Pressure - Luminoobs are going to have to put some practice in, as there's no trick here other than staying focused, matching colors and keeping your eyes off of that clock!
  • Fix The Fight - That said, remember that block sequences are random. If you're starting off with a series of checkerboard blocks, restart.
  • Follow The Leader, Wayne Beam shows us what you need to do:

Dig Down Trophies:

Clear all stages in Dig Down Mode.

Clear two columns of squares within the time limit to progress through a total of 20 stages, which are all arranged randomly. The same skills used in Challenge Mode will see you through here.

Puzzle Mode Trophies:

Clear Puzzle Mode Easy.

See "Puzzle Master"

Clear Puzzle Mode Hard.

Puzzle Mode involves creating pictures with squares of one color and surrounding the picture with squares of another. Completion of these sets, as well as the Super Hard puzzle set, is a requirement of the "Skin Master" trophy. Completed puzzles are marked by a 'check' in the puzzle select menu.

Puzzle Mode Tips:

  • Draw And Win - Even as a Lumines veteran, I found Puzzle Mode somewhat tricky. You can make it a great deal easier on yourself by sketching out the puzzles as they appear in the puzzle select menu on graph paper like so:
    http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/game/75/guide/lumines_puzzle_master.jpg
In this diagram, the red squares represent puzzle #49 (Typhoon Mark). The diagram has been separated into 2x2 blocks, akin to those in the game. During play, I look at the block I'm given and consult my diagram. If it's a block that I can use, I put it where it belongs. Otherwise, I leave it on the other side of the board and wait for something more useful. I found this technique very helpful, particularly on the Super Hard puzzles.
  • Brain Power! - Some puzzles require more than graph paper. That's right, folks... brain power. But don't panic... skippycue has lent us his to show us how to tackle puzzle #92 (5x5):

This technique can also be applied to the 4x4 puzzle.

Mission Mode Trophies:

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/75/004.jpgMission Beginner (B)

Clear Mission Mode Easy.

See "Mission Master"

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/75/009.jpgMission Master (S)

Clear Mission Mode Hard.

Mission Mode ranges from simple problem-solving puzzles to more demanding 'clear the board' challenges. Again, the same skills used in Challenge Mode will see you through here. Completion of these sets, as well as the Super Hard mission set, is a requirement of the "Skin Master" trophy. Completed missions are marked by a 'check' in the mission select menu.

Other Trophies:

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/75/010.jpgSkin Master (G)

Unlock all skins.

By full completion of Challenge, Puzzle and Mission Modes, all 51 skins will be unlocked. Good luck!

I can't understand why my brain isnt letting me learn the basic's of this game. Once I hit a certain level its as if someone flipped the retard switch!

Don't feel bad... this game was really hard for me, but it comes completely naturally to other people I've seen play it. With a lot practice you should be able to get the trophies, but if it doesn't come naturally to you, then like me you will never become a pro at it.
