Introduction

Set in the days when a healthy paranoia about witches was considered normal, Knights Contract follows the twisted tale of Heinrich, an immortal executioner, and Gretchen, a resurrected witch. Once the victim of Heinrich's blade by the order of the game's antagonist, Dr. Faust, Gretchen now has him under her control as the two must work together to rid the land of the supernatural foes who are cursing its people with the black spell of death.

Armed with a razor sharp scythe and explosive witchcraft, players will use these tools with spectacular effects in order to return civility to the land. As players succeed in their journey, they can deal tremendous damage to their on-comers or unleash a gruesome finisher by coordinating the efforts of Heinrich and Gretchen. However, players must also keep a close eye on Gretchen as her mortality is the key to the duo's survival as Heinrich can never be vanquished. It's time to let the combos fly and lay waste to the hordes of darkness with a liberal dose of medieval panache.

ROADMAP

1) COMPLETE THE GAME ON SQUIRE AND AIM FOR S-RANK.

If you want, feel free to start on Knight difficulty if you're confident in your skills with hack and slash games. Otherwise, I recommend you playing through the game for the first time on Squire, to get the hang of each level. You will be unlocking all of the story related trophies, as well as most if not all the combat and miscellaneous related trophies. However, Your goal in this first playthrough for each episode will be to:

  • Earn an S Rank in each episode
  • Find all of the collectibles

Often times, you might have to sacrifice your S rank in order to obtain a certain collectible, didn't do enough finishers, etc. If you messed up in getting an S-Rank, replay the episode to earn it, or do it after you beat the game; you'll want to get the Spirit Cannon ASAP, preferably on this difficulty. Keep in mind though that everything you do is carried across through multiple playthroughs, ie. collectibles, trophy progress, etc. so don't worry if you're missing a collectible in an episode, you can grab and look for them on your next playthrough through Episode Select.

If you gotten an S rank in each episode, upon defeating the final boss you will unlock the Spirit Cannon. This weapon is very useful in defeating the regular enemies in the game. If you failed to S rank in one or two episodes, go through and S-Rank them via Episode Select, and defeat the final boss again in order to unlock the Spirit Cannon.

Note you must S-Rank each Episode all under one difficulty and defeat the final boss in order to unlock the Cannon; you cannot mix and match Episodes from different difficulties.

2) COMPLETE THE GAME ON HEXEN KNIGHT.

Beat the game once on any difficulty, and you'll unlock Hexen Knight, which is this game's equivalent to Very Hard. One major difference you'll notice is that now QTE's for the bosses get increasingly hard to execute with the increase in difficulty. Aside from the QTE's, the same layouts and strategies still apply even though you'll be incapacitated much more easily and bosses are even more of a pain to defeat.

Refer to Legendary Executioner for tips, especially on the amped up difficulty in the QTE's.

Fortunately, all your upgrades and everything you've collected on your first run is carried over. If you somehow missed any collectibles on your previous playthrough, find out which one's you've missed and collect them this time around.

3) COMPLETE THE GAME ON WITCHSLAYER.

By completing your second runthrough on Hexen Knight, you can play through the game for the third and final time on Witchslayer difficulty, the game's hardest difficulty.

QTE's now require even more precise button presses in order to finish them off, but other than that, its not much of a big jump from Hexen Knight.

With your fully upgraded Witchcraft's, combined with the Spirit Cannon, breezing through this game a third time despite the jump in difficulty should be easy. Although the Spirit Cannon can no longer one shot the mid tier enemies or defeat a boss in one blast, it still does a lot of damage.

Again, refer to Legendary Executioner for tips if you need it.

4) CLEAN UP.

Though most likely not needed, you might be missing one or two of the combat related trophies, particularly the ones requiring you to defeat 200 enemies using Knight's Fury and Witch's Embrace or performing 1,000 Finishers. Refer to the trophy guide for tips in how to grind them.

STORY RELATED TROPHIES

QTE's, courtesy of Aeirou.

As a general rule, most if not all bosses can be taken down with relative ease using all 3 levels of Maar's Lance. Bosses are either vulnerable to the Lances, or will have a very brief window in which the Lances will do massive damage to them. Equip Gretchen with Seal of Magic and Seal of Wisdom to lower the downtime of the spells, and you will be able to easily take down bosses within the first few minutes.

Once you have the Spirit Cannon, bosses get even more ridiculously easy as they go down from it in one or two hits, providing the cannon actually hits them dead-on.

Recommend Equips:

  • Elizabeth's Fangs
  • Vlad's Impaler III
  • Maar's Lance III
  • Spirit Cannon

Damage his legs using Elizabeth's Fangs and Vlad's Impaler III; you'll be able to occasionally stun him which will prevent him from casting his beam attacks. Whenever Maar's Lance III is available to cast, throw it AT him, not the legs, so you can damage him even when he's walking around.

Once he falls down to his legs, cast spells in the following order:

Spirit Cannon from afar -> Elizabeth's Fangs -> Go up to him and press :cross: to get atop -> Perform a short scythe combo -> Elizabeth's Fangs -> Vlad's Imapler III -> Finisher

Repeat till you get his health down and the QTE initiates.

Recommend Equips:

  • Colchis Trap III
  • Maar's Lance I
  • Maar's Lance II
  • Maar's Lance III

Simply trap her with Colchis, and when she's trapped, throw a Lance or two. Occasionally, the Lance will do a lot of damage when you throw it, sometimes even depleting her health bar in one hit, whether she's on the ground or in the air with her shield. Glitch or not, thank god it does that!

Beat the game on Witchslayer.

All of the difficulty related trophies are stackable; if you complete the game on a higher difficulty, the lower difficulties will unlock.

Completing the game for the first time will unlock Hexen Knight difficulty, and completing the game a second time on Hexen Knight will unlock the final difficulty level in the game, Witchslayer.

Some Tips:

QTE's:

  • As you may have noticed, the higher difficulty you play the game on, the harder the QTE's; the window of opportunity you're given to execute the button presses gets smaller and smaller
  • To counter this, do not wait till the prompts appear, the window to press them opens for a split second before the button appears on the screen, start pressing them then.
  • You don't need to necessary time yourself to press the button. You can repeatedly press the button before it appears and it'll still count. However, do not mash the button as the game will automatically register that as a failed attempt
  • QTE's that require the use of the :ls:, if you're having trouble getting the game to recognize your tilt, try holding it to the required direction instead
  • Button prompts that require you to mash a face button, don't literally mash the buttons as quick as you can. Experiment with different rhythms, as each boss differs
  • If you're having trouble with specific bosses, try out different rhythms until it works out. Some bosses require precise timing, others are more lenient. Yes its annoying to have to lower a bosses health bar again, but its pretty much the only way.

In addition, Eye Beams has posted a neat trick you can use in regards to the QTE's on higher difficulties:

Cheap Trick for Witchslayer QTE (maybe)

Characters:

Heinrich + Gretchen

As your 4 main Witchcraft spells, I recommend equipping:

  • Colchis Trap III
  • Vlad's Impaler III/Tannhauser’s Illusion/Elizabeth's Fangs
  • Maar's Lance III
  • Spirit Cannon

Using Colchis Trap to trap enemies, Vlad's Impaler for performing Finishers on the weaker enemies, and Maar's Lance and Spirit Cannon for the bigger enemies. If you want to go scythe frenzy, you can switch the lance out Tannhauser’s Illusion. Always equip Seal of Magic and Seal of Wisdom at all times. Health won't be an issue since you'll be killing enemies left and right before they have the chance to hurt you. Carry Gretchen around at all times when you're waiting for spells to charge, walking around, etc. The AI can be frustrating and unresponsive at times, so carrying her around will ensure her safety, not to mention heal both her and your injuries.

Bosses get ridiculously easy once you abuse Maar's Lance and Spirit Cannon. Occasionally, you can perform a instant kill with Maar's Lance. This is especially true against the final bosses. During boss battles, consider switching out your spells for Vlad's Impaler III for Tannhauser’s Illusion/Elizabeth's Fangs.

Heinrich + Minukelsus

On Episodes 12 and 14, Minukelsus will replace Gretchen and serve as your temporary companion.

Refer to A Worthy Apprentice for strategies.

Gretchen

Equip the following spells when you're in control of Gretchen for Episodes 13 and 15:

  • Colchis Trap III
  • Vlad's Impaler III
  • Elizabeth's Fangs
  • Enoch Hammer III/Hildebrand’s Sword

Since you can't perform Finishers, you'll have to rely on spells that do a lot of damage. Use Elizabeth's Fangs and Hildebrand's Sword as your main source of damage output, as well as using it to destroy the Wight's armors. Use Colchis Trap to trap enemies from time to time, and finish them off with a charged :circle: attack; this usually results in one hit kills, even on the higher and highest difficulty. Replace the Sword with Enoch Hammer whenever you face Phantoms.

You can heal yourself by sacrificing your spirit bar (the blue bar beneath your health) at any time by holding :r1:. If you need to refill, destroy the relics scattered across the levels. Though highly unnecessary, use Witch's Embrace if you need to, especially against the Gold Wights.

Then again, I'm sure you'll have your own tips, so this shouldn't be too hard.

COMBAT RELATED TROPHIES

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/564/34.jpgBlood Spilled (B)

Defeat an enemy.

See Bloody Massacre.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/564/35.jpgBlood Bath (B)

Defeat 100 enemies.

See Bloody Massacre.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/564/36.jpgBlood Massacre (S)

Defeat 1,000 enemies.

Enemies killed carries across all playthroughs, so unlocking this trophy will come naturally, most definitely before the end of your first playtrough. If for some reason you want to get this trophy early and out of the way, consider replaying the first episode over and over as the enemies are relatively weak in this level.

Kill your 1st, 100th, and 1,000th enemy to unlock the corresponding trophy.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/564/22.jpgThe Sonic Knight (B)

Perform a 30-hit combo.

You will most likely get this naturally, especially against the big enemies such as the Dendrolord (Big Tree Monster) and the Dire Wolfs when you first encounter them. Remember, in order to get to a 30 hit combo, you must constantly be attacking enemies and not take any damage. Get hit, and the combo will end and you'll have to start over.

See Combo Master if you need additional tips.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/564/21.jpgCombo Master (B)

Attain the highest possible combo rating.

Like most games, by stringing together a series of attacks, you perform a combo. Combo rating ranges from D to S+. Achieve a combo rating of S+, and the trophy will unlock.

You will most likely earn this naturally, but if you're having trouble. it can actually be achieved rather easily. When you're faced with multiple enemies at once, activate a Colchis' Trap, and follow it with a Mag Mell's Rose. If possible, both spells are preferred to be at Level III. Colchis Trap will pin the enemies down and Mag Mell's Rose will damage every enemy in the area multiple times. Follow it up with a few scythe attacks of your own, and you should earn an S+ rank.

In addition, spamming Witchcraft's and finishing it off with a Finisher does the job as well.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/564/44.jpg'Tis But a Scratch! (B)

Experience your first revival.

See It's Just a Flesh Wound!

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/564/45.jpgIt's Just A Flesh Wound! (B)

Revive 50 times.

Heinrich in this game is basically immortal, so he can't die. If he takes too much damage, he will drop down to the ground and/or explode into pieces. To revive, you can do this in two ways. You can either press :cross: repeatedly when prompted, or call Gretchen to come to you by holding :r1:. She will sacrifice some of her health to automatically revive you.

Repeat this 50 times, using either methods, and the trophy will unlock.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/564/37.jpgExecuted (B)

Land a Finisher.

See Expertly Executed.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/564/38.jpg Skillfully Executed (B)

Land 100 Finishers.

See Expertly Executed.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/564/39.jpg Expertly Executed (S)

Land 1,000 Finishers.

As the name suggests, you can perform a Finisher on an enemy. When an enemy's health is in the yellow, a few hits away from being defeated, you'll be given the opportunity to perform a Finisher. To perform a Finisher, have Gretchen cast a spell (:r2: + a face button) on an enemy when their health is low, and you will see a :circle: prompt at the bottom of the screen, press :circle: at the right moment to unleash a Finisher.

To check an enemy's health, lock on to them with :l1:.

Perform a Finisher once, 100 times, and 1,000 times, and the corresponding trophies will unlock.

If even after your third playthrough you still haven't performed your 1,000th Finisher, go though Episode 3 on Squire. With your Level 3 witchcrafts, almost everything you cast will automatically lead to a Finisher. Simply replay this level over and over until you earn your 1,000.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/564/40.jpg Elegantly Executed (S)

Land 100 Perfect Finishers.

To perform a Perfect Finisher, you must press the :circle: prompt perfectly during the Finisher. Near the end of a spell, a ring of blue light will close in on the :circle: button. When the :circle: glows blue, that's your cue to press it. If done successfully, Heinrich will have a blue aura surrounding him during and after the Finisher move, indicating you performed a Finisher perfectly.

Fortunately, the lower the difficulty you play on, the easier you can perform a Perfect Finisher since the window of opportunity is larger. If you have trouble earning this on Knight or higher, consider cleaning this up on a lower difficulty if you still don't have it by the end of your third playthrough.

Perform a Perfect Finisher 100 times, and the trophy will unlock.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/564/23.jpgTake One for the Team (B)

Perform 10 counterattacks while taking enemy attacks.

Often times, an enemy will grab hold of Heinrich, and you will be prompted to repeatedly press one of the face buttons on the controller, selected randomly depending on the type of enemy. If done successfully, Heinrich will throw off the attacker and perform a counterattack. Repeat this 10 times, and the trophy will unlock.

If you're impatient and want to get this out of the way as soon as possible, you can do this during Episode 4. When you're forced to rescue Gretchen by traversing through a series of caves, head right, where you'll be facing a lot more Wights in this path than you would have had you headed through to the left. Defeat the Hammer Wights, and leave the Sword/Shield Wights alone. Let them slash at you, and they'll eventually perform an attack that you can counterattack on. Counter it by repeatedly pressing :cross:. Repeat this sequence via Episode Select if necessary.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/564/43.jpgNice Try! (B)

Repel an enemy's attack 10 times.

You can repel an enemy's attack by pressing :square: just before their attack hits you. If done successfully, time will slow down and the repel will knock the enemy back, giving you a few seconds to execute a few attacks before time goes back to normal.

Simply repeat this 10 times, and the trophy will unlock. You can use the same method as Take One for the Team if you want to get this early.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/564/42.jpgGet 'Em Up (B)

Pick up the same enemy five times.

See Head Bangin'.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/564/41.jpgHead Bangin' (B)

Bash the same enemy into a wall five times.

You can earn this trophy at the same time as Get 'Em Up.

To grab an enemy, press :circle:. Once you grab an enemy, you can charge forward with the enemy in your hands by pressing :cross:. Aim towards a nearby wall and smack them against one. Repeat this 5 times, picking them up with :circle: when they're on the ground and both trophies will pop.

If you're attempting this on a lower difficulty, often times you'll end up killing the enemy before you can smash him 5 times against the wall for the trophy. Consider attempting this when you're playing on a higher difficulty as they'll have more health to withstand the attack.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/564/46.jpgBodyguard (B)

Save Gretchen from enemy attack.

See Guardian Knight.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/564/47.jpgGuardian Knight (B)

Save Gretchen from enemy attack 50 times.

When an enemy grabs hold of Gretchen, blood streaks of red will appear around your screen, letting you know that Gretchen is in danger. She will continue to lose health until you free her from the enemy. Run up to the enemy and slash the enemy holding her with your scythe to free her. Repeat this 50 times to unlock both trophies.

Depending on the enemy and difficulty, the rate at which Gretchen loses health and the number of attacks it takes to free her from an enemy's grasp varies. You will mostly earn this before the end of your first playthrough, so don't worrying about grinding this.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/564/49.jpgI'm Taking You With Me (B)

Damage both yourself and an enemy with Witchcraft.

See Careful With That!

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/564/50.jpgCareful With That! (B)

Damage both yourself and an enemy with Witchcraft 10 times.

Only certain Witchcraft spells work for this trophy, such as Vlad's Impaler and Colchis' Trap.

To damage yourself and an enemy at the same time, grab an enemy with :circle: and have Gretchen cast a spell with :r2:+the face button you assigned the spell to. You will damage both you and the enemy. Simply repeat this 10 times, and both trophies will unlock.

Keep in mind though defeating enemies using this method can often incapacitate you. Only attempt this method when you're facing the weaker enemies, as Gretchen will most likely die if you leave her with the stronger enemies before you can revive. If you're having trouble, consider playing on a lower difficulty to do so.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/564/26.jpgSouls United (S)

Defeat 200 enemies with Knight's Fury.

Knight's Fury: :l2: + :square: or :triangle:

You won't unlock Knight's Fury until after Episode 2.

The blue bar beneath Gretchen's health bar must be at least half full before you can activate this skill. To fill it, when you defeat enemies they will release spirit power which Gretchen can absorb.

Upon activation, Heinrich will transform into a demonized sort of creature. When active, Gretchen will be off screen, meaning you won't be able to cast her spells. However, to make up for this, the damage you do with your Scythe is dramatically increased, giving you a few seconds to dish out massive damage before the effect wears off. To unlock this trophy, simply kill 200 enemies with Knight's Fury active.

If you don't get this by the end of your third playthrough, consider using Episode Select on one of the earlier episodes, particularly Episode 3. The first group of enemies you encounter is a bunch of Dendrites. Activate Knight's Fury and kill as many of the seven as you can. Once Knight's Fury wears off, quit and return to the Episode Select screen. The amounts you killed will be saved, so you can keep repeating this method until you killed your 200th and the trophy pops.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/564/27.jpgHer True Strength (S)

Defeat 200 enemies with Witch's Embrace.

Witch's Embrace: :l2: + :cross: or :circle:

You won't unlock Witch's Embrace until after Episode 2.

The blue bar beneath Gretchen's health bar must be at least half full before you can activate this skill. To fill it, when you defeat enemies, you'll release their spirit power which Gretchen can absorb.

Upon activation, you'll be treated to 1 of 6 possible scenes in which Gretchen will take all enemies on screen and kill them using different parts of her body . This ability is very useful if you're finding yourself overwhelmed, especially in higher difficulties such as Witchcraft.

Simply use this to kill 200 enemies, and the trophy will unlock. Use the same method as Souls United if you don't earn this by your third playthrough.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/564/24.jpgRing Around the Rosie (B)

Catch and defeat five enemies at once with Mag Mell's Rose.

Mag Mell's Rose is the first spell in the spell list; its the spell where Gretchen summons a bunch of thorns that entraps and damages enemies.

The trophy is easily achievable at when the spell's only at level I or II, but you'll have a much easier time with it fully maxed to III. Simply round up five or more enemies, preferably the weak enemies and once they are grouped together, lock on to one of them with :l1: and cast the spell with whichever face button you assigned the spell to. If done successfully, all five enemies will get trapped by the spell. Press :circle: when prompted to finish it off with a Finisher, hopefully earning your trophy.

A good place to set this up is during Episode 1 when you backtrack for a Lost Page, or during Episode 3 on the Dendrites (Little Tree Monsters).

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/564/28.jpgA Worthy Apprentice (B)

Defeat 50 enemies with the help of Minukelsus.

On Episodes 12 and 14, Minukelsus will replace Gretchen and serve as your temporary companion.

He has 4 different attacks that you can order him to perform:

:r2: + :cross: - Minukelsus will throw an Explosive Flask at an enemy

:r2: + :square: - Minukelsus will perform a powerful sword thrust with his Sword

:r2: + :triangle: - Minukelsus will throw a Flask that will freeze the enemy

:r2: + :circle: - Minukelsus will swing his Paracelsus Sword wildly at his target

The best way to kill enemies is to order Minukelsus to throw an Ice Flask at enemies, and then finishing them off with a swipe of your Sycthe. While you're waiting for the Ice Flask ability to recharge, command Minukelsus to do a powerful thrust. This attack will instantly kill the weaker enemies and/or do massive damage to the bigger enemies; performing the Sword Thrust is the only way to break a Wight's shield. When you're facing the Phantoms, have Minukelsus throw either flask at them so they fall to the ground where you can finish them off.

Have Minukelsus aid you in killing enemies, or have him kill enemies himself, and this trophy will unlock once you've defeated your 50th enemy.

Collect 10,000 souls.

See Soul Reaper.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/564/20.jpgSoul Reaper (S)

Collect 100,000 souls.

Like most hack and slash games, defeating enemies rewards you with experience. In this game, they are called Souls, shown as floating pinkish purple orbs. Luckily, there is no need to run up to them and pick them up; they are automatically collected when you defeat an enemy.

Souls collected is accumulative and carries across all playthroughs; you don't have to have all the souls in your pool at once.

Once you've collected your 10,000th or 100,000th soul, the corresponding trophy will unlock. You will most likely unlock this without trying for it during your first playthrough.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/564/25.jpgKeeping Healthy (B)

Collect 100 Recovery Items.

As with the Souls, occasionally when you defeat an enemy they will drop green crystals that upon picking up will restore your health; these are the recovery items. Since Heinrich is basically immortal, picking these up will instead recover Gretchen's health. Only Gretchen can pick these up, so either carry her towards one or lure her to one with :r1:.

Pick up 100 of these, and the trophy will pop. You will most likely unlock this by the end of Episode 7.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/564/51.jpgTouch Too Much (B)

Carry Gretchen around for a long time.

To pick Gretchen up and carry her around, press :r1:. You need to carry Gretchen in your arms for approximately 2 hours for the trophy to unlock. You don't need to do this in one sitting as the time is carried across all playthroughs. Make a habit of carrying Gretchen around whenever you're not fending off enemies, and you will unlock this trophy naturally with next to no effort.

It's also worthy to note that by pressing and holding :r1:, to track and see where Gretchen is on the map. Very useful when you are getting grouped by enemies and you need to locate Gretchen fast before her health gets depleted. If she's not too busy fending off for herself, holding :r1: will make her come towards you.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/564/48.jpgEye Candy (B)

Use Witch's Embrace when no enemies are present.

Simply perform Witch's Embrace when no enemies are around, and the trophy will pop. For details and how to use the spell, refer to Her True Strength.

I'm sure even if there isn't a trophy involved, you would've most likely used the spell ;).

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/564/29.jpgGrowing Power (B)

Upgrade a Witchcraft.

Upgrade a Witchcraft, and the trophy will unlock.

You can upgrade your spells at any time by accessing the upgrade menu at any time with :start:.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/564/16.jpgThe Witch's Ultimate Weapon (G)

Acquire Spirit Cannon.

The Spirit Cannon is the last Witchcraft in which you can obtain. To unlock it, you must score an S-Rank on every episode, and beat the final boss, on Squire difficulty or higher. Note you must S-Rank each Episode all under one difficulty and defeat the final boss in order to unlock the Cannon; you cannot mix and match Episodes from different difficulties. If you haven't scored an S Rank in certain episodes, you must go back and earn an S Rank on them, and defeat the final boss again.

At the end of each episode, you'll be graded based on your performance in game time in that episode, a C grade being the lowest and the S grade being the highest:

  • Time - The developers were very generous in terms of the time limit required for S-Rank. Even if you go out of your way to collect collectibles, as long as you don't idle, you will have no problem earning a S-Rank on the time for each level.
  • Combos - Getting a S-Rank in combos is all about variety; scoring a lot of hits and the performing Finishers. If you're performing Finisher's and using Witchcraft's whenever you can, this will come naturally.
  • Kills - As long as you kill every enemy you come across as you progress a level, you will get this easily. If you're planning to skip enemies for whatever reason, just make sure you only skip a few and not too many.
  • Finishers - Performing Finishers is the best way to take down most enemies, so use it whenever you can. However, just performing one every so often will suffice.
  • Retries - A retry is when you're taken to the "Continue Screen", not when Heinrich needs a revive. Note that by pressing "Yes" or "No" during the Continue Screen, the game will still register the fact that you had to retry. A neat trick to get around this is to quit to the XMB whenever you die and the "Continue Screen" is displayed. Load back up the game, and select "Continue". You will continue the game from your pervious checkpoint with no evidence of you ever dying. Thanks to Mitsuru Kirijo for the tip!

Your overall rank for the level will be the average of these five categories (ie. S, A, B, S, S will get you an overall S rank). Five S ranks will get you an overall S+ for the episode, but an S rank in each episode is all that is needed to unlock the Cannon.

Achieving S Ranks in each episode might sound challenging at first, but it's easily doable once you know what to aim for.

Collectibles Guide

http://i.imgur.com/BAqwO6u.jpg

Like with most games, there are collectible items scattered across the levels for you to collect.

  • Lost Pages - Apepar as small glowing yellow orb
  • Witchcraft's and Equipment's - Appear as bluish green colored mists.

Fortunately, you can see how many there are in each episode on the episode select screen, under Items. A icon that's dimmed out means there are items you still have not yet collected. A lightened up icon means you have collected that item, obviously.

If you only need one item from an episode, you do not need to finish the episode in order for the game to recognize. Once you've obtained the item you missed via episode select, you can exit back to the episode select screen, and the item will be saved; you do not have to complete the episode or reach a checkpoint for it to save.

Though not tied to trophies, completing certain tasks within the game unlocks costumes that you can use:

  • Default - You begin the game with this.
  • A Century Ago - Complete the game once on any difficulty
  • Modern - Complete the game on Knight
  • Future - Complete the game on Hexen Knight

You can change your outfit at any time in the Episode Select menu under "Extras".

Thanks to Valcryst for originally posting the locations!

Locations for the collectibles is as follows:

Weird, some people say same the same thing (which doesn´t make any sense to be honest), but i beat the game the first time on Squire and only got the 100 years ago costumes.

Got everything else except the two remaining costumes.

I hope this guide include a solid method to unlock the costume. Anyway thanks for the reply.

Can someone explain to me what this game is about?

It's a hack'n'slash game with a few twists in the formula: your character is a burly scythe-wielding knight that cannot die, and your companion is a witch who can die - she has a life bar and you have to keep her safe or it's game over. She has magical attacks you can assign to the face buttons and trigger on command, and the goal of the combat is to combine your physical abilities with her magical abilities into powerful combos. I'll gloss over the plot other than to say it's set in medieval times and you and your companion take on all manner of evil mystical creatures whilst engaged in the usual type of save-the-world -from-destruction-quest. It's pretty standard stuff. The combat is somewhat novel, though the prime novelty (and also the frustration and difficulty) of the game is that it is basically a game-length escort mission.

(to you sir BreadSkin)

I noticed you have one's first play-through to be on Squire difficulty. Is there any reason why one couldn't do Paige difficulty first to get the hang of things as opposed to Squire first? You note that the Hexen Knight difficulty is unlocked after beating the game on any other difficulty, so why not just use Paige as a better/easier starting difficulty?

Or do you just not recommend starting with the easiest difficulty due to the learning curve the game presents when you jump to Hexen Knight (even with carried-over upgrades)?

I'm actually not sure if playing the game on Paige will unlock Hexen Knight. Every person I've asked played on Squire or Knight.

Still, the game is very easy on Squire to the point where it won't be fun, so I recommend playing it on Normal.
