Introduction

Welcome to John Daly's Prostroke Golf! This is a very straight-forward "minimalist" golf game, as you don't have to worry about levelling up or progressing your character's attributes at all. The only thing that you can change or customize are your golfer's appearance and whether you're left-handed or right-handed. The default clubs in your bag is what you will keep for the entire game, as there is no option to trade out a 6-iron for a 2-iron, for example. You do not earn money, skill points, new clothes, better/different clubs, or anything else of that nature. New courses however DO have to be unlocked. There are 12 courses total, with only the 1st course - Mystic Rock - being available at the onset.

This title is PlayStation Move compatible, but hardly necessary or even recommendable. The standard DualShock 3 controller is superior for trophy play, as it offers much better precision in terms of hitting exact percentage distances, and for consistently hitting the ball straight. This roadmap/trophy guide is written with the DS3 in mind, but for those who like the extra challenge the Move can most certainly be used instead.

While playing the game you will have the option of doing so in either "Prostroke View" or "Caddie View" (as long as you're using the DS3, that is). For trophy play "Caddie View" is definitely the way you want to go, as it is simply easier to be more successful this way. "Prostroke View" REQUIRES you to learn how to correctly shift your weight between your back foot and front foot for accurate shots, while "Caddie View" does not even allow you the option of weight-shifting at all (which is a good thing!). Consistently making good shots can be troublesome enough already, and there is absolutely no need to add an extra layer of difficulty to the process! **For those using the Move, only "Prostroke View" can be used.** For casual play this is all well and good, but for trophy play you are just making things harder on yourself for the reasons mentioned above (less precision on nailing exact percentages, keeping the ball flight consistently straight & the inability to play in "Caddie View").

And lastly, beware of the putting meter! For some reason the numbers are NOT accurate... everything will come up a little bit short for some reason. This doesn't matter a whole lot early on when the greens are easy and the putts are straight, as you can simply overhit your intended percentage by about 5% and not have any problems. But make sure to NEVER hit a straight putt exactly on the percentage you need to get it there (or let alone a little short!)... as you will frustratingly miss a lot of putts short this way. For example (as a left-handed putter):

If you stop at exactly the 25% marker, you will get 22%-23%

If you stop at exactly the 50% marker, you will get 47%

If you stop at exactly the 75% marker, you will get 72%

Luckily a 100% putt stays true at 100%

For the longer, curving putts later in the game, exact percentages are often required to make the putt. If you have a sweeping curve lined up center-hole at 64%, and accidently miss your number, it will change the line of the putt and either stay high of the hole for an overhit or obviously dip below your line for an underhit. You can use the graphics beneath the putting meter to establish certain percentages to make things easier, for example a left-handed putter (like I am) can stop the meter right at the long stem of the "P" in "Putter" to get a consistent 60%. Or stop the meter where the dark box begins underneath the meter (the box where the word "Putter" appears) for a consistent 80%. Likewise stopping the meter as soon as it touches the "50%" graphic will always go 38%, or stopping it as soon as it hits the "100%" graphic is a reliable 88%. These particular numbers only work for the left-handers though, as the relationships change between a right-to-left meter movement and a left-to-right one. But regardless of which side of the ball you're putting from, this just takes some practice until you get comfortable nailing the percentage that you're aiming for. **I do not know if the percentages are also short like this when putting with the Move, as I do not own one myself.** My opinions above about the Move being more difficult overall for trophy play mainly come from other online players with whom I've communicated with. Literally every one of them at some point had to trade in the Move for the DS3, as their trophy progress came to a grinding halt with the Move. Not that it CAN'T be done... it's just harder.

Walkthrough

Step 1: Play in an offline pairs match

This will get you Two's Company and can be done offline with one controller. Choose the "random three" option in the course setup to make this go faster.

Step 2: Beat John Daly on all 12 courses

This is done under "Challenges" in "Career Mode", and is a 4-step process for each course. You must first beat Daly in a Driving Challenge, a Close Approach Challenge & a Putting Challenge (in any order), which will then unlock the 4th and final Match Play Challenge. Beating Daly in the Match Play event will both unlock that particular course for tournament play as well as earning you the "Beat John Daly at (insert course name)" trophy. Each Challenge is 9 holes in length, and there are 12 total courses & corresponding trophies that need to be dealt with here. By completing all of these you will also earn North American Domination, Mediterranean Domination & British Domination as well.

This mode seems to incorporate a "Mercy Rule" where if you repeatedly fail at one of the first 3 challenges, the game will eventually let you just skip it and move on to the Match Play Challenge. While this will let you unlock that particular course for tournament play once you win the Match Play, you will NOT earn the "Beat John Daly at (insert course name)" trophy until you go back and beat whatever challenge that you were stuck on in the first place. In my case I failed a Close Approach Challenge about 5 times in a row and then got frustrated and turned the machine off. The next day when I turned it back on, the Match Play Challenge for that course was mysteriously unlocked. The exact parameters of this "Mercy Rule" is still unknown however.

Step 3: WIN all 12 tournaments

This is done in "Tournaments" under "Career Mode". You cannot play in a course's tournament until you beat Daly in Match Play under "Challenge" mode. There are 12 total courses/tournaments to compete in, and you must place in 1st place in all of them to earn the gold World Champion trophy. Along the way you will also earn the corresponding trophy for each individual tournament, with the requirements being anywhere from you having to finish within 8 strokes of the winner to you having to win the tournament outright.

Step 4: Online play

Time to get online and go for Predator and Perfect Host. Predator just requires you to win one online match, regardless of mode. Perfect Host requires you to BE THE HOST and complete a 4-player match. Game mode does not matter as long as you have 3 other people playing with you. You do not have to win this, but all 4 players must hang around until the last hole is completed. For ease and quickness for both of these trophies select the "random three" option when setting up how many holes to play. Unfortunately the online servers are completely dead, so go here to find some boosting partners > http://www.ps3trophies.org/forum/john-dalys-prostroke-golf/72600-boosting-online-partners-thread.html.

Step 5: Clean up/Misc. trophies

If you've completed the first 4 steps, you will have no more than 11 misc. trophies remaining. These are Driving King, Dialed In, G.I.R., Pin High, Crash and Burn, Birdie, Monster Putt, Approach Work, Eagle, First Ace and Birdie King. In reality you will most likely pick all of these up along the way without even trying, except for perhaps First Ace. Follow the guide below to get some tips on all of these if you're having any trouble.

Go to "Career Mode" > "Challenges"

All 12 courses have a series of 4 challenges in which you must beat John Daly in. The trophy will not unlock until all 4 challenges have been won. The challenges are:

Driving Test

It's you vs. Daly in a 9-hole long drive contest. The game will tally all 9 of your drives together and compare this score to all 9 of Daly's accumulated drives. For example if you hit all 9 drives exactly 300 yards, and Daly hits all 9 of his 290 yards, you will win this challenge by a score of 2,700 to Daly's 2,610. This is rather easy and should give you no trouble at all. Simply hit your drive full blast and keep it as straight as possible. Your ball does NOT have to land on the fairway for the distance to count, so keeping it straight really isn't that big of a factor here. Just keep away from water at all costs, as this will result in an "out of bounds" shot and give you a score of 0 yards for that hole. Daly's drives are not that impressive, and he often hits his out of bounds a good one or two times per challenge (but not always). So if you are having trouble with a particular Driving Test, just keep replaying it until Daly chokes and hands you the win.

Approach Ordeal

It's you vs. Daly in a classic 9-hole "closest to the pin" contest. This can definitely be the hardest of the 4 challenges, as you have many decisions to make while standing over your shot. Some of the shots will have you just off the green using a wedge, while others will have you 100+ yards away using mid or even long irons. The scoring works opposite of how the Driving Test does, as the lowest score wins this time instead of the highest score. For example if you hit all 9 of your approaches to exactly within 1 yard of the pin, and Daly hits all 9 of his exactly 2 yards away, you will win with a score of 9 to Daly's 18. A perfect score would be considered 0 yards, if you somehow manage to actually make all 9 shots (which isn't going to happen).

Make sure you activate the yellow "shot shaper" line by using the :r2: button, as this will help you see how you have your shot lined up. Understanding how your different clubs work for this challenge is a MUST. The LW (loft wedge) has the highest trajectory, and because of this the ball will fall straight down onto the green and generally stay put. This is the club that you want to use for anything 80 yards or less, as that is it's maximum distance. The main drawback to using a LW however is the wind. Since your ball will be in the air for a longer amount of time, it gives the wind more opportunity to push your shot right or left, or to be way short or way long depending upon where the wind is coming from. That being said, you may want to choose a different club if the wind is stronger than 5mph, as it's rather hard to know how much to adjust your shot since the ball is going so high into the air.

The PW (pitching wedge) is just the opposite, and has a greater maximum distance of 130 yards. This is the wedge with the lowest trajectory, meaning that the ball will not stay in the air as long, nor will it go as high up in the air as the other wedges. This is a great way to combat crosswinds, as the lower trajectory will hardly be affected by the winds. The drawback here though is that the ball will hit the green at an angle, and almost always kick forwards and roll quite a bit. When using this type of shot you generally want to aim around 5 yards short of the pin to allow for the extra roll. Depending upon how the green is designed your ball could literally roll 20+ yards, so 5 yards is more of just a basic starting point. The SW (sand wedge) is in the middle of the LW & PW, and will kick forward and roll less than the PW (but more than the LW), and be affected by the wind more than the PW (but less than the LW).

Any shot over 130 yards in distance will require a 9-iron or higher, but luckily you can manually change the trajectory of these shots by pressing either up or down on the :r3: button. By pulling down before your shot you can raise the trajectory to eliminate the ball rolling on the green, but if there's any wind you could be in troule. By pressing up before your shot you will lower the trajectory to keep the ball out of the wind, but it will be harder to stop the ball from rolling once it hits the green.

If you're having trouble beating Daly - who by the way will often choke on these shots also - simply grab a pen and paper and "map out" the holes. Start on hole 1 and keep retrying it until you find the perfect shot for the conditions, and then write it down! Move on to hole 2 and repeat. If you don't write them down it's easy to forget that hole 3 (as a random example) requires a PW aimed at the left edge of the green with 68% power.

In The Hole

It's you vs. Daly in a 9-hole putting contest. The scoring for this one works like the "Approach Ordeal" challenge, whereas the lowest accumulated score wins. ALWAYS use the yellow "shot shaper" (:r2:) when putting, as this will tell you EXACTLY where the ball will go as long as you hit it at the proper percentage distance. Line up the yellow line so that it's hitting the dead center of the cup and putt away. Putting in this game is extremely easy, and with a little practice you will be making ridiculous putts from literally any spot on the green regardless of distance. Daly doesn't choke as much on this challenge as he does on the others... but it hardly matters. As long as you line up your putt dead center and hit your percentage strength correctly you simply cannot be beat. I was able to get a perfect score of 0 yards quite a few times by making all 9 putts, and with just a little practice, you will too.

Match-Up

It's you vs. Daly in a 9-hole match play event. By combining what you've learned in the previous 3 challenges it's time to beat down Daly in a head-to-head match. This should not be too troublesome at all, especially if you've mastered how to make putts. The "money shot" is always your approach shot to the green, and I recommend always aiming for the center of the green regardless of where the pin is actually located. Daly mostly will make pars, with an occasional birdie or bogey thrown in. Just drive it relatively straight, aim for the middle of the green on your approach shot, and use the "shot shaper" to sink the long putt. That will get you a birdie on a Par 4, giving you an extra shot just in case you mess up somewhere to still get your par.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/570/28.jpgBritish Domination http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/site/icons/trophy_silver.png

Defeat John Daly on all five British courses

These regional trophies are a bit misleading... since it appears that only 5 of the 12 core courses are actually licensed, with the other 7 being "fantasy courses". Some of the fantasy layouts seem to be loosely based upon real courses, but that's really just speculation on my part rather than established fact. Obviously fantasy courses only exist in the developer's head, and cannot be tied to exact locations with 100% certainty. I'll break down each course below, but again, outside of the 5 that are licensed, the rest of the information is pure speculation:

Mystic Rock - Licensed, North American

The Belfry - Licensed, British

La Gomera - Almost certainly Mediterranean

Harpers Lake - Almost certainly North American

Dale Hill - Licensed, British

Edwards International - Most likey either British or North American

The Shire - Licensed, British

Viannos Steps - Almost certainly Mediterranean

McIntosh Forest - Most likely either British or North American

Chart Hills - Licensed, British

Mijas Gardens - Almost certainly Mediterranean

Bedsfield Hall - Most likely either British or North American

To obtain these trophies you need to clear the 4 challenges for each course, and if you're going for the platinum you'll be be clearing out all 12 courses anyway. For more information on clearing out the challenges see Bedsfield Hall Challenge.

Trophy Guide (cont.)

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/570/29.jpgWorld Champion http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/site/icons/trophy_gold.png

Win all twelve tournaments

A specific course tournament is first unlocked by clearing out all 4 challenges for that course under "Career Mode" > "Challenges". Once unlocked the tournament is accessed under "Career Mode" > "Tournament". Tournaments can be 9 holes, 18 holes, 27 holes or 36 holes depending upon which course you're playing. You must finish each tournament in 1st place for the trophy to unlock. If you happen to tie for 1st place after the conclusion of any tournament the trophy will still unlock as long as you successfully win the playoff.

The majority of these tournaments are quite easy to win, but the final 2 can be a bit troublesome (Mijas Classic and Bedsfield Hall Masters). They are both 36 holes in length and feature aggravating crosswinds to complicate things. You'll need to exercise everything that you've learned up to this point while beating the Challenges, especially the "Approach Ordeal" ones. Please refer to Bedsfield Hall Challenge for some tips about understanding club selection and trajectory to help combat the crosswinds.

Hit a ball further than 320 yards

This will most assuredly happen throughout the course of the game on it's own. But if you would like to farm it anyway, simply choose "Quick Game" > "Strokeplay" from the main menu (do not select "Practice" as this mode does not have the quick restart option). Select any course that you like (it really doesn't matter), and make sure to change the wind option to "Strong Wind". Then just whack away on the first tee, and if you don't get it, press :start: and choose "Restart". This will take you right back to the tee for another try without having to quit the game and set it back up all over again. The ball need not go straight or even land on the fairway, it just has to travel 320 yards in any direction.

Hit a green in regulation

This will most assuredly happen throughout the course of the game on it's own. A "green in regulation" simply means that your ball has come to rest on the putting surface either on your 1st shot of a Par 3, your 2nd shot (or better) on a Par 4 or your 3rd shot (or better) on a Par 5.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/570/36.jpgPin High http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/site/icons/trophy_bronze.png

Hit the flag from an approach off the green

This trophy description should technically read "flagstick" rather than the actual "flag" itself (big difference!). Although this one might sound a little hard, I can almost guarantee you that it will happen naturally in the course of the game without you actually trying for it. It can be done from any distance away from the green, be it 1 yard out or 100+ yards away. It also does not matter where on the flagstick that you hit it, be it 1 inch off the ground or 1 foot or more. Obviously the closer to the green that you are the better chance you'll have of forcing this one to happen. I would recommend waiting until you have a shot right off the edge of the green, and then select your PW (pitching wedge). Line up your shot dead straight to the hole, and put just a tiny bit of extra power behind it. For example if 33% is what you need to get the ball to the hole while still in air, try to hit it at 34%-35% instead. But don't stress it... this one will happen eventually!

Hit the ball from one bunker to another

This one is quite easy, it's just a matter of finding a hole with multiple sand bunkers. Hole 1 on Mystic Rock will work just fine as there are 3 different bunkers to the right of the fairway & the green. Just remember that when you're playing from the sand you're going to incur a 40%-50% distance penalty. So if your target is say 60 yards away, you need to make sure that you're using a club that has a range of around 120 yards to get it there.

Finish a hole one shot under par

This will happen quite naturally in the course of the game. You should always press :r2: when putting to take advantage of the yellow "shot shaper" line, as this will instantly make any putt sinkable even from a very long distance.

Sink a putt from over 30 feet away

As mentioned above, always use the :r2: when putting to take advantage of the yellow "shot shaper" line. Make sure your putting line is aimed directly at the center of the hole and putt away. Refer to the roadmap above for tips on how the putting meter works concerning hitting exact percentages for your distance. The only trick here is to wait until you have a putt at least 30 feet away, but considering that some of the greens in this game are absolutely enormous... you won't have to wait too long.

Score a hole in one

This could very well be the last trophy that you get before platinum. Hopefully you'll get lucky and get one while playing through the tournaments and such, but if not, it can be farmed without too much frustration. What you want to do is choose "Quick Game" > "Strokeplay" from the main menu (do not choose "Practice" as that mode has no quick restart option). Use the :r2: button to select "The Shire" as your course, and then set it up to play all 18 holes with NO WIND. The very first hole is a Par 3, and you will even be automatically lined up straight at the hole. The game gives you a 7-iron as your default club here, but you'll want to manually drop this down to an 8-iron instead. From here it's simply a matter of hitting a nice straight shot at 100% power (don't hit it any extra though), and with a little luck you'll drop it right in the hole. If you miss just hit :start: and then hit "Restart" and it will take you right back to the tee with the 7-iron again. Remember that you're already lined up perfectly straight, so just drop down to the 8-iron again and swing away. The whole process takes maybe 10 seconds max, so you can realistically have 120 swings at it per every 20 minutes invested. Just remember... constant repetition breeds success! This will also unlock Approach Work and Eagle if you haven't already earned them elsewhere.

Play in a pairs match

From the main menu choose "Quick Game". On the next screen use the :square: button to add players to all four slots, all configured to Controller 1 for ease. If done correctly you'll see two players labelled as "Team A" and two players labelled as "Team B". Continue on and choose "Match Play" as your game type. It doesn't matter which course you choose or the corresponding options, but you may want to choose the "random three" option when selecting how many holes to play to make this go quicker. From here just use Controller 1 to play all three holes with all four of your attached players, and the trophy will pop once the last player completes the last hole.

Score 100 Birdies in tournament, challenge, exhibition or online matches

This is not nearly as bad as it sounds, and will easily come if you're playing all the way through for platinum. In my estimation it will take at least 100 birdies to win all 12 tournaments, let alone if you have to play a few more than once. Throw in the fact that you also have to beat Daly 12 times in Match Play just to unlock all of the tournaments... trust me, there's no need to farm this.

Trophy Guide (cont.)

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/570/42.jpgPerfect host http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/site/icons/trophy_bronze.png

Host and play a four-player online match

This requires you to HOST and complete a 4-player match. Game mode does not matter as long as you have 3 other people playing with you. You do not have to win this, but all 4 players must hang around until the last hole is completed. For ease and quickness select the "random three" option when setting up how many holes to play. Unfortunately the online servers are completely dead, so go here to find some boosting partners > http://www.ps3trophies.org/forum/john-dalys-prostroke-golf/72600-boosting-online-partners-thread.html.

Win a game online

Just win one online match, regardless of game mode. Your opponent will need to hang around until after the last hole is completed for the trophy to unlock. For ease and quickness select the "random three" option when setting up how many holes to play (if you are the host). Unfortunately the online servers are completely dead, so go here to find some boosting partners > http://www.ps3trophies.org/forum/john-dalys-prostroke-golf/72600-boosting-online-partners-thread.html.

Nice to see guide for this game! I might just start working for a plat again. good job :)

Thanks... it's my first ever try at writing one. I admittedly just got this platinum two days ago, the last tournament at Bedsfield Hall gave me all kinds of fits. For future reference, Daly will finish at anywhere from -21 to -24 for the 36 holes. I finally nailed it at -26 which put me at the #4 spot on the global leaderboard. Good luck!

Very nice guide, thank you kindly for making this. Just wanted to add a note to help with the First Ace trophy. I found doing the method in the guide, the ball would constantly hit the flag and bounce away. Also, was having a hard time hitting 100% without getting flagged for overswing. So I did this instead:

Same hole, instead of 100% 8 Iron, I did 87% 6 Iron, and aimed a hair right of the hole. This allowed the ball to roll up to the hole, and in. All the other settings were the same as the guide.
