Introduction

Ion Assault HD is a tough, rewarding and extremely fun twin stick shooter. If you’re after an easy 100% I suggest you look elsewhere, this game requires a fair bit of dedication and practice to play successfully. On the other hand, if you’re after a gaming experience that delivers superb gameplay, the addictive 'one more go' mentality and some trophies to be proud of, then look no further. For some reason, it would seem this game is somewhat of an unknown amongst the masses, which I have to say is a real shame - if you’re on the fence whether to give this game a try, I highly recommend taking the plunge.

Walkthrough

Step One - How to Play & Survival Mode

First things first, from the main menu go to ‘Help’ followed by ‘How to Play’. These videos and instructions prove useful to understanding the gameplay mechanics and techniques you need to be using when playing the game. Once done you have two options, Campaign Mode or Survival Mode; I highly suggest starting with the latter. Tackling Survival Mode and ultimately earning "The will to live" trophy will better prepare yourself for obtaining the "High Score Hunter" trophy in Campaign Mode.

Step Two - Campaign Mode

With the experience you’ve gained in Survival Mode, it will make beating Campaign Mode and earning the "High Score Hunter" trophy far less daunting and infinitely more achievable. Throughout Campaign Mode you can earn the various miscellaneous trophies available, however these really needn’t be worried about, as your primary concern is aiming for the elusive 5,000,000 + points total. Any miscellaneous trophies you may be lacking after beating Campaign Mode can be earned in literally a few minutes if you actively seek to achieve them.

Complete the single player campaign.

The campaign mode consists of five areas:

  • Echelon Territory
  • Solaris Spacedump
  • M1 Crab Nebula
  • Tombs of Tau Ceti
  • Matrix Obscura

Each area has six stages, the sixth being a boss stage. To obtain this trophy you just have to make it from the start of Echelon Territory to the end of Matrix Obscura. (It's worth noting that while using continues does reset your score, it does not prevent you from earning this trophy).

Complete the cooperative campaign.

This trophy is the same as "Triumph", except you need to complete the campaign with a co-op partner via local co-operative play.

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/1311/B7D.jpg Battleship (B)

Destroy five asteroids at once.

You don’t need to worry about this one as it will come naturally during play - remember the size of the asteroid is irrelevant. There are many instances where you will destroy beyond 5 asteroids utilising the various power-ups available or a fully charged shot.

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/1311/9DE.jpg Abstinence (B)

Complete a stage without collecting a Power-Up.

This is a very simple trophy, just play the first stage of the Echelon Territory and don’t collect the power up that becomes available.

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/1311/B77.jpg Hyperspeed (B)

Finish a stage in less than 60 seconds.

This is another trophy that is easily obtained via the first stage of the Echelon Territory. Pay no attention to the tutorial that runs through this stage, or the enemies that spawn. Just concentrate fire on the asteroids and you will finish the stage in under 60 seconds. (This may take you a couple of attempts).

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/1311/328.jpg Jackpot (B)

Score 1,500,000 points in a single game.

Please refer to "High Score Hunter".

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/1311/592.jpg Survivor (B)

Survive 3 stages without dying once.

Please refer to "Untouchable".

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/1311/216.jpg Rock'n'Roll (B)

Destroy 50 big obstacles in a single game.

Another very easy trophy. Make it through stages 1-4 of the Echelon Territory destroying all asteroids, enemies and enemy spawners without using a continue. For me it unlocked mid-way through stage 4.

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/1311/CD4.jpg Hard to kill (B)

Score exceeds 1,000,000 points (Survival).

Please refer to "The will to live".

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/1311/43C.jpg The will to live (B)

Score exceeds 2,500,000 points (Survival).

This trophy is very tough, and will require a lot of perseverance and practice to acquire. I cannot stress enough the importance of keeping combos going for as long as possible, especially your initial combo at the beginning of your run.

Learning how to deal with each enemy type is integral to success with this trophy. Each enemy has distinct spawn shapes and noises, you need to learn how to recognise these, thus ensuring you can prepare yourself to deal with every situation. Prioritise fire on the enemies that give you the most hassle, you must keep on the move and avoid being bogged down by enemies, all the while keeping a steady stream of score orbs flowing in.

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/1311/FBC.jpg High Score Hunter (G)

Score exceeds 5,000,000 points (Campaign).

This is another very tough trophy. It's made slightly easier to cope with if you have taken my advice and started with survival mode first. By doing this you will be used to enemy movement, dodging, and how to keep a multiplier going. The time you are given to link multiplier/score orbs together in campaign mode is slightly more generous too.

The ability to achieve this mammoth score in campaign mode, pretty much boils down to how you can handle the 'Matrix Obscura' area. Playing from the start of the campaign you need to be reaching here with around 3,000,000 total points. Well over 2,000,000 points are avaliable for the taking in this last area, you just need to practice. Put everything you have learned in survival mode to use and above all, try your best to keep calm and composed when things get hectic.

Arguably this is tougher than "The will to live" so expect to put a few tries in before achieving this.

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/1311/CB0.jpg Untouchable (S)(H)

Complete a whole sector without dying once.

This is easiest using the Echelon Territory. It may seem obvious but the main focus when going for this trophy is to simply survive, not keeping your combo going or scoring points. Try to keep your screen as clear from enemies as possible as you can be bogged down rather quickly, so your main focus of fire should be on them, as and when they spawn.

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/1311/C91.jpg Field Medicine (B)(H)

Collect enough Score Orbs in a single run to get two extra lives at once.

This cannot be done in survival mode. I fulfilled the criteria for this using survival mode first and the trophy did not pop. I don't think the trophy is glitched, just poorly worded. Given that this feat is easier to achieve in campaign mode anyway, it does not particularly matter.

In campaign mode extra lives are awarded every 100,000 points achieved. With that in mind you want to try to end a stage near to a multiple of 100,000 - for example 98,000. When you enter the next level combo from the start, you would only need ‘5 x 20,500’ to reach beyond 200,000 which would get you two extra lives.

I know this guide was done awhile ago, but thought it should be noted that you can play through Allied Victory(S) (Complete the cooperative campaign), with just a second controller turned on. The extra lives aren't shared, so it doesn't matter if the other ship is destroyed. Just play as if you're playing the single campaign. The other ship will return every time you score 100,000 points, causing the screen to zoom out; but other than that, play as if you're going for the "Triumph" trophy again.
