Introduction

"IL-2 Sturmovik: Birds of Prey" is a WW II flight game/simulator in which you will take part as a pilot over the aerial battlegrounds above Europe and the USSR.

This game itself isn't too difficult to platinum, most trophies will just require you to play the campaign or some single missions (usually on simulator difficulty), get a certain amount of kills or unlock certain stuff. And with the release of the v1.01 update the online trophies have become drastically less time consuming. (To give you an idea, I boosted 6-8 hours a day for a period of 10 days before the update. Now it will probably take 4-5x less time)

Walkthrough

Step 1: Completing training and unlocking "Realistic" and "Simulator" difficulties

Before being able to start the campaign, you will need to complete the 3 primary training missions. After completing these necessary training missions you will go to the campaign, but it's important to go back and finish a couple of optional training missions in order to unlock the realistic and simulator difficulties. These are the 2 optional training missions called "Realistic" and "Simulator".

Step 2: Completing the campaign (on simulator)

If you want to beat the campaign in one playthrough, you should choose the simulator difficulty. If you're not very familiar with flight games, it could be a bit challenging at first, but you should get the hang of it easily. Remember to give commands to your wingmen, since they're a great help on simulator.

If you're stuck on a certain mission, you can always try it on arcade first. This will be of great help, especially in the missions where you need to attack ground targets, since these can be difficult to spot.

You can start on a lower difficulty if you prefer though, it doesn't really matter that much, since you can easily replay the missions you already did on any difficulty you like.

Completing the campaign on simulator will give you all of the campaign related trophies, with the exception of 3 if you're not careful ("Good Partner", "Real Feelings" and "Side Mission"). Check the trophy guide below in order to see what you'll need to pay attention for to earn these trophies.

You will probably also earn all of the kill related trophies during the campaign, but don't worry if you didn't. The kill related trophies are cumulative over all of the single player modes (tutorial, campaign, single missions and training).

You can also set the amount of attempts you get to try a mission, before starting it. Since this doesn't affect trophies, I would suggest to keep it on unlimited.

Step 3: Completing the single missions

After completing the campaign, I would suggest to move on to the single missions. Note that the difficulty on which you complete a single mission doesn't affect trophies, so feel free to complete them on any difficulty you want.

Start by completing the "Escort" mission (in the Battle of Britain section), make sure to set it so that you have limited fuel/ammo and additional attempts set to 0.

This way it will earn you the "Invulnerable pilot" trophy and in addition if you completed the entire campaign and the "Escort" mission, you will have unlocked all of the single missions (which in turn earns you the "Be ready!" trophy).

All that's left now is to complete all the single missions that have either a “Ground attack”, “Need cover” or "Fighter" tag, to earn the three trophies linked to these missions. (When a mission is selected, you will see "Type: ..." in the description. If you don't see anything, then you're not required to complete that mission for the trophies.)

Also make sure you complete the two single missions "Inspect AAA" and "Inspect Airfields" (Battle of Britain section), these don't have any tags, but are necessary to earn the "Well-read Pilot" trophy. If you followed this roadmap and completed these 2 missions you will earn this trophy.

Step 4: Earning the online trophies

The online part in this game used to be extremely time consuming, but the 1.01 update drastically reduced most of the unlock requirements that needed to be done online.

Even though in my opinion this can now be done without boosting it, I would still suggest to find a boosting partner. Because there aren't that many people who play this game online and those that do are possibly very skilled.

Click
to find a boosting partner. (All the online trophies, with the exception of "Comrade-in-arms" can be done with two players.)

I would suggest to concentrate your efforts on the "Weapon Collector" and "Bird Fan" trophies first and when possible try to combine it with some of the requirements for the other online trophies. After you earned those two trophies, finish up the other online trophies.

Check the trophy guide below for detailed instructions on the requirements for every trophy.

Step 5: Finishing the last trophies

Now that you've completed everything in the game, all you need to do is earn the trophies you might have missed (e.g.: "Master of acrobatic flight", "Flying Tank",...) or couldn't earn yet (e.g.: "Test Pilot" - Complete a training mission with each aircraft).

Have a look at my trophy guide below for details on how to earn a particular trophy. I ordered the trophies according to the order in which you would earn them by following the trophy guide.

Tutorial & Campaign Trophies

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/208/37.jpg First step (B)

Conduct a flight manoeuvre during the first mission of the tutorial.

Near the end of the first tutorial mission, you will need to perform a loop. If performed successfully, this will be your reward.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/208/07.jpg Born to be ace (B)

Destroy 5 aircraft in one mission.

You should get this one easily during the third mission of the tutorials, where you will need to engage a large group of bombers.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/208/36.jpg Fresh forces (B)

Complete Primary Training.

You'll earn this trophy after completing the third mission of the tutorials.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/208/50.jpg Real aviator (B)

Complete the first mission in the “Battle of Britain” chapter on Simulator.

Earned by completing the first mission of the campaign on simulator.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/208/49.jpg Good partner (B)

Successfully defend your leader in the “Baptism by Fire” mission.

As long as you complete the first mission of the campaign, without losing your leader, this trophy will pop up. It's really easy, I got it on my first try without even trying, with the difficulty on simulator. Can be done on any difficulty.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/208/51.jpg Royal Navy’s Friend (B)

Complete the “Convoy” mission.

Achieved by completing the second mission of the campaign on any difficulty.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/208/08.jpg To hit the bull’s eye (B)

Destroy a ship using bombs.

You will get this easily during the third mission of the campaign. Bombing on arcade is ridiculously easy, if you play on simulator then dive-bombing will be the most accurate way to put your bomb on a target.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/208/48.jpg Real feelings (B)

Complete “The Red Skies of Dover” in the real cockpit view.

This is the fourth mission of the campaign, and the last one of the first chapter. I personally never swapped to another view and got it at the end of the mission.

The real cockpit view is the only view that looks like an actual cockpit, so it shouldn't be too hard to recognize. When you play on simulator this is also the view in which you always start. But if you're playing on arcade or realistic, the real cockpit view won't be the default view, so you might want to set it as default before you start this mission (go to Main Menu > Profile > Options > General).

Find the Brandenburg Gate and attack the vehicle near it.

This trophy can only be achieved during the last mission of the campaign.

First you will want to find the Reichstag building in the middle area of Berlin. It will be a big black/grey building next to a large forest. The gate is to the south/south-west of here. Try to fly low and slow if you can't find it, and circle the forest. The gate is not very far from the Reichstag Building and it borders the forest. Once you find it, just drop as many bombs as you can on top of it. When I got this trophy, no red enemy markers came up, but I dropped about four bombs on it and the trophy popped up. (Credit: USAFCOM)

Here's an in-game picture of the building and a map, the gate is more or less near the little aircraft icon.

Online Trophies

Note: The online community for this game has completely died, so I would advise you to find a boosting partner using this thread.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/208/12.jpg Weapon collector (S)

Unlock all weapon presets.

All the weapon packs must be unlocked in online matches by achieving various goals. See the full list of unlocks here.

To unlock everything you will sometimes have to get ground kills with certain small aircraft, which is pretty difficult to do. In this case it's best to use the kamikaze technique explained here.

Since this trophy requires a big effort, I would suggest focusing on this and doing all the other online trophies along the way.

This trophy is slightly glitched, because there is a problem with the loadouts of the B-17G. The game will tell you that you've unlocked the 8x 1000lb bombs as soon as you unlock the aircraft itself. But, even though you can use these bombs, you will need to win 20 strike matches with the B-17G for it to unlock properly! Only when it gives you the message that it got unlocked again will it count for the trophy.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/208/29.jpg Any sky is home for me (B)

Win an Online match at each location.

When joining or creating a match, you will notice that the map name consists of a country/main region and possibly a sub region (e.g.: Britain, Kent). You only need to win a match on every main region to get this trophy. These are: "Britain, Sicily, Stalingrad, Winter in Stalingrad, Korsun-Shevchenkivskyi, The Ardennes and Berlin".

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/208/30.jpg Not a rookie anymore (B)

Win an Online match in each mode.

You need to win one online match in Capture the Airfield, Dogfight, Strike and Team Battle mode to earn this. You will need to play 30 Dogfight matches and 50 each in the other modes, so this will come naturally.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/208/31.jpg Honoured fighter (B)

Play 50 ranked matches.

There are only ranked matches for the PS3 (Xbox has both player and ranked matches). You will get this in no time while winning all the matches needed for other trophies.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/208/26.jpg Capture Airfields champion (B)

Win 50 matches in Capture Airfields.

This is IL-2's variant of Capture the Flag. Your objective is to capture airfields by landing on them and spending a certain amount of time on the ground without being destroyed, the team that controls the most airfields wins.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/208/24.jpg Dogfight champion (B)

Win 30 matches in Dogfight.

This is a simple death match game, it's every man for himself.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/208/25.jpg Strike champion (B)

Win 50 matches in Strike.

In this mode you will need to destroy as many enemy ground targets as possible. While defending your own to the best of your abilities.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/208/23.jpg Team Battle champion (B)

Win 50 matches in Team Battle.

This is the traditional team death match. Players will be divided in two teams and you have to kill as many of the other team members in order to win.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/208/34.jpg Comrade-in-arms (B)

Invite two friends in your team and win a match.

For this trophy, you will need four people. The host is the only one who will earn the trophy, so make sure you switch so that everyone can earn it.

The host should start by creating a 4-player game and inviting the others. Once everyone is in the lobby, the host together with 2 players will have to set their team on A (press triangle when in the lobby), while the 4th player has to set his team on B. Make sure you win the match to earn this trophy.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/208/32.jpg Landing master (S)

Conduct 50 successful landings on Realistic in Capture Airfields.

You will need to join/create "Capture Airfields" matches with the difficulty on realistic. While playing these matches, conduct 50 landings on an airfield. You just need to come to a full stop, there's no need to capture the airfield. (This doesn't need to be done in one match.)

If you don't mind boosting, I would suggest using the first map ("Britain, Mandon"). This map has a long and easily accessible runway, on which you should be able to do 3-4 landings in quick succession before reaching the end of the runway.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/208/28.jpg Immortal pilot (B)

Destroy 5 player aircraft without dying.

I would suggest doing this in "Capture Airfields" or "Strike" matches, since other players are less likely to crash their plane or bail out in these matches. These two actions can prevent you from getting the kill. Try to shoot down 5 aircraft in a row.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/208/27.jpg The Ace of Aces (S)

Destroy 100 player aircraft.

You should get this trophy easily, seen as how many matches you need to win or kills you need to make to get certain unlocks.

Miscellaneous Trophies

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/208/11.jpg Bird fan (S)

Unlock all aircraft.

A lot of the aircraft can be unlocked by completing the campaign or certain single missions, but some have to be unlocked by playing online. See the full list of aircraft unlocks here.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/208/10.jpg Test pilot (B)

Complete a training mission with each aircraft.

To complete this, just fly a quick match (Training) with every available aircraft. Make sure you complete it, don't just start and leave the training. Fastest way to do this is to set the amount of enemies to 1 and give him an easy aircraft to shoot down.

You cannot complete this if you haven't unlocked all the aircraft yet (see "Bird Fan").

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/208/21.jpg Allied aircraft expert (B)

Complete one mission or match with each Allied aircraft.

You will get this when doing the "Test Pilot" trophy.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/208/22.jpg Axis aircraft expert (B)

Complete one mission or match with each Axis aircraft.

You will get this when doing the "Test Pilot" trophy.

For some reason the Ta-152 H-1 isn't needed for this trophy, while it's actually an axis aircraft. So you can get the trophy a little earlier.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/208/20.jpg Soviet aircraft expert (B)

Complete one mission or match with each Soviet aircraft.

You will get this when doing the "Test Pilot" trophy.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/208/33.jpg Real experience (B)

Conduct a successful landing on Simulator.

Make sure the game is set to Simulator and land your plane (preferably on an airfield).

Planes with tricycle landing gear are the easiest type of aircraft to land. They're also almost impossible to 'nose over'.

In this game the aircraft with tricycle landing gear are the A-20, Arado-234, He-162 and Me-262. But I would suggest using the A-20, since the other ones are experimental jets that are more difficult to handle.

If anyone is experiencing difficulties earning this trophy, have a look at the spoiler:

[spoiler=problem]

Under the advice of a friend and the Xbox site I decided to play the single mission 'Going Home'. I limited fuel and ammo. The mission will ask if you wish to engage a flight of Henkels... I said 'no'.

I then flew to the only airfield on the map and tried to land. I crashed once before successfully landing. NO TROPHY POP. I then tried again and made sure that I stayed on the runway the entire time....my previous successful attempt was a little sloppy. I DID get the trophy on the second attempt where I stayed on the runway.

So, what can really be learned from this? I have no idea... But, it does seem that 'Going Home' is at least worth a try if players are stuck.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/208/35.jpg Master of acrobatic flight (S)

Perform all the aerobatic manoeuvres on Realistic.

To achieve this trophy you will need to do the five aerobatic manoeuvres listed under stunts in the encyclopedia (Main Menu > Profile > Encyclopedia > Stunts). These are: "Barrel Roll, Inside Loop, Split-S, Spin and Immelmann". (If you don't know how to perform these, check the description in the encyclopedia.)

Best way to do these is by starting a quick match (Training) and pick your favorite aircraft (I personally used a Spitfire Mk XVI).

Biplanes (I-153 and Po-2) are also a good choice for stunts. They have a great maneuverability because they have about 20% more lift than equally sized monoplanes. But they are slower than monoplanes, so watch your airspeed.

Before starting a stunt, make sure you have enough altitude to perform it. Take your time to do each stunt, watch your airspeed and adjust when needed. Try to maintain a proper altitude and airspeed throughout every stunt. If done properly a little card will pop up with the name of the stunt you just performed.

This can still be completed even if the card doesn't pop up. The card is more of a: "You did that one perfectly" thing (No card popped up for me when performing my spin). But if you want to be sure, try getting the card.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/208/18.jpg Flying tank (G)

Complete 100 missions in single player or online mode with the IL-2 Sturmovik.

Since this is the aircraft the game series are named after, they had to give it a trophy. Completing 100 missions/matches can be time consuming, just try using it from time to time and you will get there eventually. ('completing a mission' = 'winning a mission')

This can be farmed by flying training missions. Have one enemy fly around (I-153) and kill it. It should take about 30 seconds at most. (Credit: Fido996)

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/208/01.jpg Platinum (P)

Awarded for successfully collecting all trophies from IL-2 Sturmovik: Birds of Prey.

You will be awarded this final trophy once you got all the other ones. Congratulations if you made it this far pilot.

Hey, great work on the guide Aruberikku,

i wanted a trophy guide for this game soo much, and Aruberikku saves the day;)

Thanks

Yea, I heard:D. This game is actually really easy so far. Simulator is not difficult at all.

Here are a few simple tips.

1.)If your having trouble with stalls and spins on Simulator, turn dow your sensitivities, it really helps.

2.)If your having trouble finding ground targets, use the zoom button and scan the ground. Look for muzzle flashes. If you can't hit your targets, just dive into them, as you have unlimited lives (if you choose the right settings). I call it "Commie-kazie". Get it? You know, Soviet Union and what not.:o

3.) Be aware of chasing enemy fighters. Some may look like like they are going to crash after you hit them, but will pull up close to the ground. Confirm your kills, but don't end up crashing also.

4.)Make use of your Trim and WEP. Trim will set your altitude and direction. If you keep flying up or down without touching anything, re-set your trim. Also make sure to use WEP. You will need it to catch up to faster targets on some levels. Don't overuse it, becuase it will ruin your engine.

5.)Know how much damage you've taken. If your engine is riddled with bullets, bailout and re-spwn (in the pause menu).

6.)Use your Comrades. My wingmen shot down many more planes than I did, and completed some of my objectives for me.

No, didn't want to take the risk of flying 100 missions using training, if there's a possibility that it won't count. Did it like this:

If you want to "farm" this trophy, I would suggest doing this on the "Counterattack" single mission in the "Battle of Stalingrad" section. You will only need to destroy five ground targets.

Once you know the five targets closest to your starting position , this mission can be completed extremely fast on arcade difficulty. (My personal record is 34 seconds :D)

Is there any missable or glitched Trophies in this game ??

Not as far as I know.

I only need the "Weapon Collector" and the platinum. Had no problems with the other trophies.

Although I thought "Bird Fan" and "Test Pilot" were glitched, because I thought I had all the aircraft. But the first unlock list posted on the official forums didn't include data on unlocking the Ta-152 H-1 and after posting there, one of the developers responded. I've also updated it on the list here.

Since the Ta-152H-1 is an axis aircraft, and I was able to achieve "Axis Aircraft Expert" without it, you could say this trophy is "bugged". But not in a bad way.

There's also a glitch in the game were sometimes if you kill another player the kill can be awarded two times. It happened for me, on my fourth kill, when I was trying to get the "Immortal Pilot" trophy. It happens randomly and is, as far as I know, pure luck if you get it at a time like me.

Dont think so, just PM Aruberikku, he'll tell you:)

Fixed lol...

RE. Unlockable encyclopedia articles.

I think you've missed 'Air to Ground Rockets' and 'Anti Aircraft Defences', because they're still locked in my encylopedia!

Thanks!

Seems I forgot all the encyclopedia articles that get unlocked in single missions. Should be fixed now.

The two you still have as locked should get unlocked by completing the single missions "Inspect AAA" & "Inspect Airfields", both in the Battle of Britain section.

Let me know if you find anything else missing/wrong :p

  • 1 month later...

Need a bit of help with landing master.

I've spent the last hour landing in a capture airbase match with a friend, waiting till the blue "plane landing on runway" icon at the top, but I didnt come to a full stop, i went down to about 20, took off again and landed and repeated

do I have to stop fully to get the trophy?

Also, do you need to get 50 llandings in the one match?
