Walkthrough

Step 1: Finish the story mode with Hiccup getting as many story mode trophies as possible. If you follow this guide, you should be able to get all but one of the story mode trophies in the first playthrough. You will have to play through again later as Astrid, but don't worry about that at first.

You should also look out for the arcade mode trophies and one overlapping trophy. As you play this game, you gain the ability to find up to three more dragons for a total of four dragons. While you are free to choose any dragons you like, you should be sure to select at least one Deadly Nadder. Preferably, all the dragons you select will be Deadly Nadders. If you do this in this play-through, you will have a Night Fury dragon (Hiccup’s default dragon) and three Deadly Nadders.

The reason you want to have a Deadly Nadder is because it has two attacks that you can use to spam your way to victory. See below for more details. There are five missable trophies that I’ve marked in the guide. You should take a look at those and make sure you save at the appropriate places to you can be sure to unlock all of them in this run.

There is quite a bit of grinding after you complete the main story and that falls mostly under the “All Stars” trophy’s requirements. Most of the other trophies that you’ll be getting on this run are listed under the Miscellaneous Trophies section. Also, you'll want to refrain from purchasing anything from the store, since the "Viking Gold" trophy requires your character to be holding 10,000 gold at one time.

The Deadly Nadder’s Attacks:
The two attacks that you’ll be using with this dragon are the
:triangle:
:triangle:
:triangle:
attack and the plain
:triangle:
attack. Personally, I liked the flow of the triple
:triangle:
attack better than the plain
:triangle:
. The plain attack is demonstrated here by Tyger 7 over at our sister site:

While I don’t have a video to demonstrate the triple
:triangle:
attack, the reason it works is as follows: This attack begins with the single
:triangle:
attack, as above. Then moves to two quick blows (the second
:triangle:
). And finishes with a devastating blow (the third
:triangle:
). This final blow stuns the opponent. If you dash back after landing this blow and are at the right distance from your stunned opponent, you can repeat this combo so that the first
:triangle:
attack misses, the second
:triangle:
attacks hit and unstun the opponent and the final
:triangle:
attack stuns the opponent again.

If done correctly, the opponent won’t ever attack you, giving you a perfect win! This strategy is key to getting the perfect wins necessary for one of the arcade mode trophies.

Step 2: Finish the arcade mode trophies. Everything you need to know about the arcade mode trophies has been outlined under the “Conqueror” trophy.

Step 3: Complete the main story tournaments with Astrid. First off, do NOT overwrite your primary save file that you used to unlock all of the trophies from steps 1 and 2. I repeat, leave the last save file from that run alone, you’ll be needing it for step 4.

OK, now that that warning is out of the way, all you have do here is plow through the tournaments with Astrid. She starts out with a Deadly Nadder and you can always get more of them as the story progresses. For this run, I had a total of four Deadly Nadders and upgraded three of them to level 13 and was able to clear the story in about 2.5 hours.

Step 4: Play the game for 20 hours. That’s right, there’s a trophy that requires you play this game for 20 hours on a single save file. Obviously, you want to do this on the save file from steps 1 and 2. See the “Viking Inhabitant” trophy for more details.

Main Story (Tournament) Trophies

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/401/08.jpg New Champion (B)

Win against the leader of the first Tournament.

This is story related and cannot be missed provided you complete the story (which you have to do twice for the platinum).

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/401/09.jpg Courageous (B)

Win against the leader of the second Tournament.

This is story related and cannot be missed provided you complete the story (which you have to do twice for the platinum).

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/401/10.jpg Daring (B)

Win against the leader of the third Tournament.

This is story related and cannot be missed provided you complete the story (which you have to do twice for the platinum).

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/401/11.jpg Fearless (B)

Win against the leader of the fourth Tournament.

This is story related and cannot be missed provided you complete the story (which you have to do twice for the platinum).

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/401/03.jpg Glory to Hiccup (B)

Finish the story with Hiccup.

Hiccup is one of two characters for which you can progress through the story. Just play through the game with him.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/401/04.jpg Glory to Astrid (B)

Finish the story with Astrid.

Astrid is one of two characters for which you can progress through the story. Just play through the game with her.

Missable Trophies

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/401/12.jpg Unstoppable (B)

Win the first Tournament without being defeated.

(MISSABLE) This is really simple and no fighting strategy is really needed, since the opponents and their dragons are very easy to beat. Just in case, you should save before entering the tournament. This way, in the unlikely event that you are defeated, you can just reload your save file and try again.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/401/13.jpg In Great Shape (B)

Win the second Tournament without taking care of your dragons during it.

(MISSABLE) While you may not have known this, you can leave any tournament you like in between matches to heal your dragons. There’s a reason most people don’t notice this and that’s because one rarely ever has to do this, if ever. This remains true for the second tournament.

Just make sure you enter the tournament with healthy dragons and you should be good to go. Still, you should save before entering the tournament. This way, in the unlikely event that are defeated, you can just reload your save file and try again.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/401/14.jpg Valiant (B)

Win the third tournament always fighting the lowest rated opponent.

(MISSABLE) This is pretty easy to miss if you aren’t aware that this is a trophy. On the other hand, once you know that this trophy exists, getting it is very easy. Unfortunately, the trophy’s requirement means that you have to play the maximum number of battles in this tournament.

Again, save before you enter the tournament so you can reload if necessary.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/401/15.jpg Brave (B)

Win the fourth Tournament always fighting the highest rated opponent.

(MISSABLE) If you’re trying to plow through this game like I was, then you probably would be going for the highest rated opponents anyway. This is because playing the highest rated opponent minimizes the number of battles that you have to play in the tournament.

Once again, make sure to save before entering the tournament so you can reload if you don't get the trophy.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/401/16.jpg Invulnerable (G)

Win the final Championship with none of your dragons being KO.

(MISSABLE) This can be one of the hardest trophies in the game. However, if you follow the following strategies, it shouldn't prove very difficult at all. First, make sure you have the strength and stamina stats for a Deadly Nadder maxed out. It wouldn't hurt to upgrade his speed so that he can do quick dashes as well. Also, you should obviously heal your dragon so that he goes into the tournament with full health. Be sure save before you enter the tournament.

Now, when fighting, you should spam the :triangle: :triangle: :triangle: attack or the plain :triangle: attack. At this point you should be comfortable with both. (See the road map for more details on these attacks). After each battle, you can exit the tournament and save your progress. Remember to only save if your dragon doesn’t get knocked out. If you do ever get knocked out, just reload the last save file and try again.

Here's an alternate method:

A tip on the "Invulnerable" trophy. The guide stated that "This can be one of the hardest trophies in the game." Indeed, at first I used the same strategy and had difficulties with this. Then I changed things up and breezed through it quickly, didn't even have to go back to the Den to heal my dragons between opponents as they remained near perfect health. Remember, you are not trying to get "perfect" wins here, just want to win each match with minimum damage, so that your first dragon beats all the four of the opponent's. Here's my 'strategy':

In the final Championship, do NOT use a Deadly Nadder. Use a Night Fury (Hiccup’s default dragon) instead. Have its speed fully upgraded to enable Fast Combos. Right from the start of a match, just push the left stick towards the opponent's dragon, and keep spamming http://www.ps3trophies.org/forum/images/smilies/Triangle18x18.png. And I mean just mindlessly hitting http://www.ps3trophies.org/forum/images/smilies/Triangle18x18.png quickly non-stop, without thinking about when a combo starts and ends, without thinking about stunning the other dragon, just keep spamming it. If the dragons switch sides, push the left stick in the other direction (no need to dash), so your dragon always faces the other dragon, and continue spamming http://www.ps3trophies.org/forum/images/smilies/Triangle18x18.png.

That's all there is to it. You will beat all the other dragons easily. I did it again in my 2nd playthru, with just a level 13 Night Fury.

Miscellaneous Trophies

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/401/02.jpg First Step (B)

Win a fight in either Story mode or 1 Player Arcade mode.

If you play this game, you will get this trophy.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/401/05.jpg Great Speaker (B)

Talk to every person on the island in Story mode.

The earliest you can get this trophy is after the second tournament, since all of the townspeople are not yet available to speak to before then. When you are able to go for this trophy, don’t worry; all of the townspeople are in plain view.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/401/06.jpg In Feathers (B)

Catch 200 chickens.

Unless you’re blind, you’ve probably noticed a plethora of chickens in the field just outside your home. To catch one, you have to be next to it and press :square:.

Note: The chickens you collect count towards the ''Rich Harvest'' trophy. You can track how many chickens you’ve captured from the Statistics page in the menu at your house.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/401/07.jpg More Wild Meat (B)

Catch 200 sheep or boars.

Like the chickens, sheep and boars are in plain view everywhere. Sheep are primarily located in the area just above the docks where you can get new dragons and boars are located in the Wild Zone. To catch either one, you have to be next to the animal and press :square:.

Note: The sheep and boars you collect count towards the ''Rich Harvest'' trophy. You can track how many sheep and boars you’ve captured from the Statistics page in the menu at your house.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/401/22.jpg Rich Harvest (B)

Gather 1,000 common ingredients.

These ingredients can be found all over the village and in the Wild Zone. Basically, anything you can pluck with the :square: button is a common ingredient. In particular, chickens, sheep and boars count as common ingredients.

Also, you get common (and rare) ingredients from finishing challenges in the Wild Zone. Because of these facts you should only actively farm this trophy after you’ve gotten the ''In Feathers'', ''More Wild Meat'' and ''All Stars'' trophies. Unfortunately, there is no stat on the statistics page that keeps track of how many common ingredients you’ve collected.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/401/23.jpg Enlightened (B)

Gather 100 rare ingredients.

As far as I know, the only way to get rare ingredients without purchasing them from the shop (which you shouldn’t do) is to complete challenges in the Wild Zone. That said, collecting 100 of them should come naturally in your quest for the ''All Stars'' trophy. So, you should only farm the challenges for rare items after you get that trophy.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/401/21.jpg Cooking Master (B)

Buy all recipes from the shop.

See the ''Viking Gold'' trophy.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/401/20.jpg Shopping Master (S)

Spend 10,000 gold at the shop.

See the ''Viking Gold'' trophy.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/401/46.jpg Viking Gold (S)

Have 10,000 gold in Story mode.

For this trophy, you have to have 10,000 gold at one time in the bank. You get money from completing tournaments and completing challenges. You never need to, and therefore never should, spend any money on anything in the shop. You will, however, need to spend money to play some of the Wild Fights, but you should hold off on playing those until after you get this trophy.

As long as you don’t spend any of your money, you should have over 10,000 in the bank easily after you’ve cleared the final tournament. If not, go farm some cash in the Wild Zone challenges. Once you’ve acquired 10,000 in the bank the trophy should pop. At this point, you should save your game. Afterwards, go the shop and buy everything available, in particular, the recipes. This will net you the ''Cooking Master'' trophy.

Most likely, you haven’t spent 10,000 gold yet, so you’ll need to go back to your home and then back out to the shop so that more items can respawn there. Keep buying items at the shop until you’ve spent 10,000 gold and you unlock the ''Shopping Master'' trophy. Now reload you’re save file from before so you have all your gold back and you can use it for the Wild Fights.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/401/24.jpg Dragon Doctor (B)

Have 4 dragons in a great shape in Story mode.

Having a dragon in great shape means that its status (i.e. health) bar is blue. The earliest you can get this trophy is after the third tournament, since that’s the earliest you can acquire four dragons. Once you have four dragons, just go to the dragon den in your house and bring their stats up; i.e. feed them and let them rest.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/401/28.jpg Perfectionist (B)

Have a dragon with 20 points in a characteristic in Story mode.

When tending a dragon in the dragon den, press :r1: or :l1: to scroll through various attribute pages. There will be a page for characteristics where you can distribute points acquired from leveling up your dragon. I think you’ll have enough characteristic points by the time you reach level seven, but certainly by the time you reach level 13.

Once you have these points put them in to the characteristic that has 20 slots available. There is always once such characteristic for each dragon, but it changes from dragon to dragon. Once you get the trophy, you can redistribute your points as you see fit.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/401/18.jpg Duelist (B)

Win a wild fight.

See the ''Legendary Fighter'' trophy.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/401/19.jpg Legendary Fighter (S)

Win all wild fights.

You will get this in your quest for the ''All Stars'' trophy. That said, you should get the ''Viking Gold'' trophy before doing any of the wild fights that cost money.

See the ''Viking Gold'' trophy for an explination.

See the "All Stars" trophy.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/401/26.jpg All Stars (G)

Have 4 level 25 dragons.

This is definitely the most actively time consuming trophy in the game. In order to fully upgrade all four of your dragons, you will need to do the following for each of them:

  • Complete all of the melee and fire trainings.
  • Get all gold medals in all the challenges on all the difficulty settings.
  • Win all of the Wild Fights. Actually, you can pick any dragons to play the wild fights. In particular, you don't have to use them all. Any experience you gain in these fights will be given to all your dragons.

In preparation for the final tournament, I recommend that you do all of the training and challenges for the dragons before the final tournament. Also, there are some Wild Fights that only become available after you clear the final tournament.

Be sure to get the ''Viking Gold'' and related trophies before finishing the Wild Fights. See that trophy for an explanation. In your quest for the ''All Stars'' trophy, you will have unlocked all the other trophies that reference it.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/401/41.jpg What an Artist! (S)

Sculpt 10 ice blocks in a row in the Ice Sculpting challenge on Expert difficulty.

This challenge is legitimately a challenge. You will need some skill and a little luck. The challenge itself is pretty self-explanatory so just keep practicing and you’ll eventually get it.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/401/40.jpg To Hit the Bull's Eyes (S)

Clear 5 checkpoint rings in a row in the Looping Race challenge on Expert difficulty.

This is terribly easy to do. Just fly through the rings and press the appropriate button(s) as necessary.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/401/42.jpg Shepherd Dragon (S)

Bring back 5 brown sheep in a row in the Flying Shepherd challenge on Expert difficulty.

I played this challenge on expert at least 5 times and each time I was able to easily get 5 brown sheep back to the pen in a row. Here’s how:

First, make sure to collect all of the white sheep. While doing this, you should be scoping out where the brown ones are. Next, you should go for the black (i.e. “dirty”) sheep. Wash them and you may be lucky and get brown ones.

Now, all that’s left over should be brown sheep and you should know where they all are. There should be at least 5 of them. Bring them all to the pen and the trophy is yours.

Now, the 360a guide suggests that there is a random factor in this challenge, but I only slightly agree. As far as I could see, the only randomness came in the placement of the sheep and whether or not the dirty ones were brown or white. In any event, there were always more than enough brown ones.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/401/43.jpg Brainy (S)

Perform 6 sequences in a row in the Memory Torch challenge on Expert difficulty.

At expert level, this challenge can actually be pretty tough. However, PS3 users get a break on account of our wonderful XMB. By pressing the :ps: button to bring up the XMB, you can freeze/pause (not crash) the game. If you do this after each torch flashes, you can write down what buttons you’ll have to press, then when it comes to reciting those button presses just read off your list.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/401/44.jpg Precise (S)

Recreate 3 dragons in a row without mistakes in the Puzzle Dragon challenge on Expert difficulty.

In my opinion, this was the hardest of the expert challenge trophies. Because bringing up the XMB washes out the colors, it is of little help here. I found attempting this challenge with the Deadly Nadder was the easiest, because it was easier to see the attributes and to distinguish between the colors. You should focus on correctly matching one attribute at a time bringing up the reference dragon as necessary. The hardest attribute to match hands down is the color.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/401/47.jpg Viking Inhabitant (S)

Play more than 20 hours in Story or Arcade mode.

First of all, keep in mind that the 20 hours have to be on a single save file. Hence, this trophy is technically the most time consuming trophy in the game. The good news is that you don’t have to do anything to get this trophy besides let your PS3 sit with your save file loaded.

To be safe, have your character standing somewhere in the village. For reference, I was able to get all of the available trophies one can get for a single save file in 12.5 hours. This left just the right amount of time left over to set my PS3 on autopilot and go to bed.

Now, in reference to the estimated time to platinum, I stated 20-25 hours, since the 20 hours played has to be on single save file, and it takes about 2-5 hours to complete the story with the opposite character. (It took me 2.5 hours for my second play-through.)

Win 50 fights without being injured in 1 Player Arcade mode.

See the ''Conqueror'' trophy.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/401/31.jpg Conqueror (B)

Win 100 fights in either 1 Player or 2 Players Arcade mode.

Follow these steps for all your arcade mode trophies:

  1. Make sure you’re playing on a save file for which you’ve unlocked all of the legendary dragons (i.e. cleared all the Wild Fights) and that has four fully leveled dragons all of which have maxed out the strength, speed and stamina characteristics. Note that I’m assuming that at least one of these dragons is a Deadly Nadder.
  2. Now, go to arcade mode and select the export dragons option. Once that’s done, go to the 1P arcade mode and select the hard difficulty.
  3. Once in the arcade mode, press :r1: to import your story mode dragons. This will get you the ''Ally or Enemy?'' trophy.
  4. Now, select your imported story mode dragons. Your imported dragons should be the first four on the far left (i.e. the first two in each row). Select all four them making sure to select your Deadly Nadder first. Have your opponent only have one dragon, namely the Night Fury. This way the fight is severely stacked in your favor.
  5. Now, go and fight. You should be using the Deadly Nadder's :triangle: :triangle: :triangle: or plain :triangle: attacks to pummel your opponents. You won’t be able to get many (if any) perfects since the game is set to hard, but you shouldn’t have any issue beating your opponent. When the match ends, select rematch and repeat nine more times until you get the ''Commander'' trophy.
  6. Now, exit out to the main arcade menu and reselect 1P arcade mode. This time set the difficulty to easy.
  7. Continue to fight with your four dragons against an opponent with a single dragon. Remember to select your Deadly Nadder first and to use the usual fighting tactic. Now, keep selecting rematch until the ''Exceptional Trainer'' trophy unlocks. Assuming you haven’t lost any battles and that you're using the Deadly Nadder attacks, you should have 20 wins and a handful of perfect wins.
  8. Now, it’s time to go back to the main arcade menu again. This time you want to create a dragon. You should create a Deadly Nadder that has maxed out strength, stamina and speeed and also has all the combos unlocked.
  9. Go back to 1P arcade mode on easy and use your created Deadly Nadder. It should be in the bottom row. As usual, you should be playing against an opponent using just a weak Night Fury, selecting rematch after each battle. Continue to use the same old tricks as above to get 20 more wins with this dragon and some more perfect wins. This will net you the ''They Are Alive!'' trophy.
  10. Next, it’s time to use all the legendary dragons. You don’t need to win with each individual legendary dragon. They just need to be on a winning team. So, to make this go fastest, select four legendary dragons at a time and play against an opponent using just a weak Night Fury. Once you win, select the next group of four dragons. Continue this process until the ''All for One'' trophy unlocks.
  11. Finally, go back and select your Deadly Nadder (either the one you created or the one from story mode). Keep playing battles against an opponent using just a weak Night Fury to rack up wins and perfect wins. As long as you’re using the Deadly Nadder fighting strategy (i.e. spamming the :triangle: :triangle: :triangle: attack and/or the :triangle: attack), you should be getting plenty of perfect wins. Irrespective, you will be getting tons of regular wins. Keep selecting rematch until you’ve unlocked both the ''Perfect'' and ''Conqueror'' trophies.

In the end, all of the arcade mode trophies should take you roughly 2 - 3 hours to complete. Assuming you're doing these trophies on your main save file (which you should), be sure to save, since the time played counts towards the "Viking Inhabitant" trophy.

This guide is open for business. Please be patient with the images, as I just submitted them to the staff and I am waiting for them to load them up to the main site.

In terms of difficulty, what game would you compare this to? Something in between UP! and Harry Potter 6 maybe?

I gave this a 3/10 for difficulty. Compared to UP and Harry Potter, I'd say it's closer to Poetter.

  • 3 weeks later...

Hey just a tip for getting 50 perfect matches & 100 matches:

1.) Create a dragon (on dragon editor) & don't put any points to upgrade it (combos & attributes) & let your opponent use it.

2.) Proceed to beat the living crap out of it. It's health will be really low & won't have any combos to really damage you or pose any real threat to you.

This is what I did, made the opponent dragons have no "melee" upgrades, and just dodged and stunned/flamed.

Well, I'm glad you found a method that works for you. It can't hurt to have alternate strategies. So, I'll throw this method in the guide.

Thanks for the great guide as usual...

One thing I might add to the road map is the mention of not spending any money... I'm about half way through the game and have already spent about $5,000. Once I looked closer into the guide I read the part about not spending any money till the end. (whoops)... adding this will probably help a couple people out from not making the same mistake and spending moneyt early.

Just a suggestion but it's up to you.

Again... thanks for the great work.

Yeah, I put a lot of warnings throughout the specific trophy guides, but failed to mention it in the road map. I've added a sentence now. Thanks for the constructive criticism.

@ Guide Team: Please upload the revisions to the main site at your convenience. The only modification was made to the Road Map. In particular, step 1.

Viking Inhabitant trophy wont unlock, spent 2 days trying to get it. I tried first leaving it alone for 24 hours in the dragon's den, and then 24 hours outside in the village, nothing.

Does your controller have to be on, or does it have to be on the screen for the game the whole time, or what am I doing wrong. My controller is set to turn off every 10 minutes, I forgot how to make it stay on. If your controller has to be on let me know so I can stop overheating my PS3 from leaving the disc burning all the time haha

I can't answer for sure, but I'd imagine that your controller is the issue. I think the option to turn off the auto-power settings is under the settings menu of the XMB, somewhere...
