Heavy Fire: Afghanistan (HF:A) is a budget on-rails first person shooter similar to “House of the Dead” and “Dead Space: Extraction.” But that is where the similarities to those popular on-rails shooters end. HF:A is a modern military shooter and it behaves as such. It has sandy locals, authentic weapons, a cover mechanic, action set pieces, and your basic American Military lingo. It also features some of the cheesiest voice over lines since the original Resident Evil.

HF:A is a offline only game although it does have online leader boards. HF:A does feature local cooperative play as the game allows for up to four players simultaneously. Separate PSN profiles can sign into the game and their stats will carry over to their own profiles (locally saved profiles on the same PS3) but trophies earned will not carry over.

Note: This guide was written using the default settings for the normal Dualshock 3 controller. HF:A has full Playstation Move support and it works pretty well with this game. Using both the Move and its optional navigation controllers works extremely well as these controls are both intuitive and accurate. That being said regardless of what control scheme you use, note that it will take you a couple missions before you feel truly conformable with the cover mechanics.

Attention 3DTV owners: At the time of this writing there is a glitch in this game that defaults the game to play in 3D. The 3D is astonishingly unremarkable; it barely changes the picture if it does at all. The problem is you cannot turn off the 3D from within the game. So if you don’t want to play this game in 3D then you will have to disable the 3D from your TV. After you disable 3D playback from your TV the game will play in 2D mode (your TV will still receive a 3D signal).

Step 1:

The game has two difficulty settings; rookie and veteran. Play though the game on rookie as you must complete the game on rookie before you can play on veteran. The game is both short and simple. The game consists of 14 missions each lasting 8-15 minutes long and two shooting range missions both lasting 30 seconds each. After you complete all 16 missions on rookie you will unlock veteran mode.

During this step will unlock:

  • (B)The Defender
  • (B)No One Left Behind
  • (B)Last Minute Hero
  • (B)Ruthless
  • (B)Survivor
  • (B)The Crusher
  • (B)Rookie
  • (B)Marine
  • (S)Exterminator
  • (B)Marksman
  • (S)Sharpshooter
  • (B)Chain A
  • (S)Chain B
  • (B)Demolition Enthusiast
  • (S)Demolition Man
  • (B)Bronze Bullet
  • (S)Silver Bullet
  • (B)Trigger Happy
  • (S)Pinpoint Accurate

As you play though the game you will unlock armory points. You gain one armory point every 2 completed missions, except shooting ranges. These points are instrumental in making the game even that much easier. These points allow you to unlock new weapons and abilities that make you a deadlier killing machine.

There are 14 total armory unlocks and they include:

-Faster Reload.

-4 clip upgrades.

-3 grenade upgrades; increases how many you can carry in this order 3, 5, and 7.

-4 weapon upgrades; M4 assault rifle, XF8 Machine Gun, FX2000 Machine Gun, and M260 Heavy Machine Gun.

-2 Extra health upgrades; the first adds 2 bars to your overall health and the second adds 4.

You can upgrade whatever you deem necessary but your first upgrade should be "faster reload." Grenades are overpowered and their capacity should be upgraded early on. You will definitely want your health upgraded for your veteran playthrough. Don't worry too much about the guns because all enemies die from a single bullet; you have an unlimited ammo pistol that is just as powerful as the assault rifles and machine guns, and yes, the pistol can take out trucks and even tanks. All the guns pretty much work the same except for the M260 which has a superior rate of fire and an unmatched clip capacity.

You should also take note of how cover is going to be utilized in upcoming sections. This isn’t very important during your rookie playthrough but during your veteran playthrough if you want to save time then you should begin understanding the cover patterns.

If you are coming to a section that has chest high wall in front of you and a ledge to your right then prepare to jump into one of those cover positions as soon as the game lets you by holding either  for the chest high wall protection or :rsright: for the right ledge protection.

Similarly if you are coming to an opening that has cover on the left and right then pre-load one of those cover positions by holding :rsleft: for the left side or :rsright: for the right side. Telegraphing your cover spots isn’t necessary in getting the platinum trophy in this game but it will help you reduce some of the trial and error sequences.

Step 2:

Play though the campaign again but this time on veteran mode. Veteran Mode isn’t much more difficult than the rookie setting. All normal enemies still die from a single bullet and all vehicle enemies still take the same amount of damage to destroy. No enemies do more damage to you than they did on rookie mode.

The only difference between rookie and veteran mode is that the enemies are much more aggressive in veteran mode. This just means they shoot at you more and are more accurate. What this means for you is that instead of popping out from cover and shooting 4-5 bad guys before retreating back into cover, now you can only shoot 1-2 enemies before you need to fall back.

During this step you will unlock:

  • (B)Veteran
  • (G)Demolition Addict
  • (G)John. R.

Step 3 Clean Up:

Use this step to clean up any trophies you may have missed, skipped or need to mini-grind. These trophies probably include:

  • (G)Headhunter
  • (G)Chain C
  • (G)Golden Bullet
  • (G)Without a Scratch
  • (S)Close Call.

See their respective trophy descriptions for tips and strategies.

After completing all of these steps congratulate yourself on your new shiny (P) Trophy.

E81.jpg Veteran (B)

For finishing all levels on veteran difficulty

This trophy unlocks after finishing the final mission of the game on veteran.

The final mission is pretty much the same as each of the previous 13 missions. But at the end of this mission you will battle a Hind Helicopter which acts as the final boss.

Spoiler

This final boss fight is a 4 section battle with a checkpoint after the 2nd section. The strategy is the same for all the sections. 1st eliminate the ground troops, and then you will be given a RPG. Pop out from cover when it’s safe and shoot the Hind with a well placed rocket then immediately duck back behind cover. Repeat this action 3 or 4 times to move on.

The final section is a little different as you will not only face ground troops but a tank as well. This is simple enough though. Just take cover to the right and shoot the tail-end of the tank with your firearm until it explodes. This strategy saves you from needing to pop out of cover to shoot the tank, which is dangerous. After the tank and ground troops are history the game will give you back your RPG. Eliminate the Hind and congratulations you have just beaten the game.

A23.jpg Exterminator (S)

665.jpg Marksman (B)

For 50 headshots in total

See Headhunter.

A23.jpg Sharpshooter (S)

For 100 headshots in total

See Headhunter.

9CF.jpg Headhunter (G)

For 300 headshots in total

Unless you consciously go for headshots during your two playthroughs this will most likely be the last trophy you earn. Two normal playthoughs will net you about 150 headshots.

If you still need this trophy after your two playthroughs load up the 1st mission (Patriot – At Scene) on rookie and take your time going through the mission only focusing on headshots. This is should be very simple because your character is now fully maxed out with the incredible M260 Heavy Machine Gun. The gun holds 240 rounds per clip and has ZERO recoil. You should rack up about 90 headshots in around 10 minutes. Repeat until you get the trophy.

You can check the progress of this trophy at any time from your profile stats in the main menu.

665.jpg Chain A (B)

For chain of 5 kills

See Chain C.

A23.jpg Chain B (S)

For chain of 7 kills

See Chain C.

9CF.jpg Chain C (G)

For chain of 10 kills

Chain kills are basically simultaneous kills. So an example of a chain kill of 5 is killing 5 enemies at once with a grenade. There is a high likelihood that you will unlock the Chain A and Chain B trophies while progressing through the game. Chain C is much more difficult though.

The best place to get Chain C is at the beginning of the 11th mission. The name of the mission is Hawk Eyes – The Escort. In this mission you are the gunner an impenetrable attack helicopter with unlimited ammo and missiles. About 30 seconds into the mission you will come to a small village. You will hear your character telling his convoy not to enter the village because it is full of enemies. You’ll see 3 small groups of insurgents on the ground, kill them or not, it really doesn’t make a difference.

The chopper will circle the village once and return to the starting position. The chopper will be facing down a street. To the right of the street are buildings, just to the north of those buildings there is a large Semi-truck. A large group of hostiles will emerge from behind this truck. Once they are in front of the truck fire a missile :l2: into the truck. Immediately fire another missile into the group of enemies in the center of the street next to building with hostiles on the roof. Also fire your last missile into the group on the left side of the street. If done correctly you will get a chain of at least 10 kills.

Don’t worry if you don’t get it the first try. Just back out to the main menu and try again. I actually got this trophy playing the veteran version of this level. I couldn’t get a high enough chain on rookie but that was probably more my fault than the difficulty mode. But if you are having trouble getting this trophy on rookie than you should try it on veteran.

665.jpg Demolition Enthusiast (B)

100 destructible objects destroyed in total

See Demolition Addict. You should get this trophy in the 3rd or 4th mission.

You can check the progress of this trophy at any time from your profile stats in the main menu.

A23.jpg Demolition Man (S)

250 destructible objects destroyed in total

See Demolition Addict. You should get this trophy by the 8th or 9th mission.

You can check the progress of this trophy at any time from your profile stats in the main menu.

9CF.jpg Demolition Addict (G)

500 destructible objects destroyed in total

This trophy is basically un-missable as you will destroy countless objects playing though the game normally. You should unlock this trophy early on in your veteran playthrough.

You can check the progress of this trophy at any time from your profile stats in the main menu.

665.jpg Bronze Bullet (B)

For 15000 fired bullets

See Golden Bullet.

A23.jpg Silver Bullet (S)

For 20000 fired bullets

See Golden Bullet.

9CF.jpg Golden Bullet (G)

For 25000 fired bullets

You will get the bronze and silver bullet trophies during your two playthroughs of the game but there is a good chance you will not get this golden trophy. You may end up a few thousand shots short. So after you have finished the game on both rookie and veteran load up “Hawk Eyes – The Escort” and fire your unlimited machine gun until you unlock this trophy. The gun will overheat but just wait a few seconds then start spraying again. Repeat until you get the trophy.

You can check the progress of this trophy at any time from your profile stats in the main menu.

9A4.jpg Trigger Happy (B)

For finishing any mission with accuracy 5% or lower

This is best done during one of the two shooting range missions. Just fire wildly into the air until your clip runs dry. Reload and continue to act like its new year’s eve. These missions last just 30 seconds so once that half a minute is up sit back and watch your trophy pop.

3F5.jpg Pinpoint Accurate (S)

For finishing any mission with accuracy 50% or higher

There is a good chance you will get this randomly after a mission during your two playthroughs. But if not you could always load up a shooting range mission and shoot one bullet and hit one target. This will give you 100% accuracy and the trophy.

3F5.jpg Close Call (S)

For finishing any mission with only one Health bar left

Load up the first mission (Patriot – At Scene) on rookie and when you are nearing the end of the mission stand out in the open and let some enemies take your health down to one bar. Kill the enemies and finish the level to collect your trophy.

EC8.jpg Without a Scratch (G)

For finishing any mission without being hit (except shooting ranges and “Hawk Eyes - The Escort”)

Don’t try for this trophy during your two normal playthroughs as it will be to frustrating. Wait until after you beat the game on both rookie and veteran so your character and his weapons will be maxed out. Now load up the first mission (Patriot – At Scene) on rookie and carefully navigate yourself through the mission. This first mission on rookie is very simple. Enemies hardly ever shoot at you and they actually miss you at times as well.

You have an awesome weapon in the M260 Heavy Machine Gun and you have the capacity to carry seven overpowered grenades. Just take your time through the level and use your grenades liberally. If you see an enemy with a big red exclamation mark ("!" above an enemy's head means he is about to shoot you - immediately!) over his head then get into cover as quickly as possible. It’s not worth the risk of trying to shoot him before he shoots you because if you miss and he hits you then you will have to restart the whole mission. Go slow and you will have no problem with this trophy. I bet you’ll get it on your first try.

TIP: If you are somehow having trouble trouble with this trophy, try this;

Mr Bubbles said:

Checkpoint approach.

If you take a 'hit', do not proceed because you risk making the next checkpoint, just stay out of cover and let the enemy kill you.

You then get the choice to load 'Last Checkpoint', proceed from there rather than restart the mission.

On a sub-account I deliberately took a hit and died three times, reloaded the last checkpoint each time and still got the trophy.

i didnt look for the cheapest for him. It was set to "Best Match" everytime I search for it on eBay you can find it straight away. I don't know why he can't find it?

It's pretty rare. I only got a copy in Canada because I found it used and I can tell it's from an American Gamestop (the label is the labels they use in the US, I shop down there a couple times a year). Gamestop, EB Games, Future Shop, none of em in Canada had even heard of the game.

That's definitely been my experience so far hahah. I sat down and busted out 80% of my Rookie playthrough in one sitting, but I had to take a break because... well, frankly I'm bored as shit LOL. I'll finish the rest of it tomorrow, preferably with a beer in hand - I'll need it. :p
