INTRODUCTION

GH:VH is without a doubt one of the toughest music Platinums out there. You will need to all but master every instrument on expert difficulty (expert+ on drums). I recommend that you use an official GH guitar controller, as other guitar controllers tend to not play nice with the game's engine - you will find yourself losing your combo and missing notes for no apparent reason, making songs like "Eruption" and "Spanish Fly" almost impossible to 5-star. I also recommend using a GH drumkit as the 5-lane charts are much easier than the 4-lane RockBand-style drum charts. That being said, crack your knuckles and warm up your voice...

STEP 1: Tutorials (Trophies: 1)

If this is your first music game, you'll want to play through every tutorial available to get a handle on the advanced techniques you'll need to get through the game. If you feel comfortable skipping them, then simply sit through any tutorial level to get the "Have You Seen His Grades" trophy.

STEP 2: Career Mode (Trophies: 33)

Next you'll play through all 4 instruments career modes, as well as band career. For band career, simply place a microphone in front of a fan on beginner difficulty while you play whatever instrument you prefer. You must play band career in order to unlock the "EVH" trophy, however you do not have to finish it. The career difficulty trophies are stackable, so playing through them on expert will prevent you from having to replay any of them. After playing through the first two songs, you'll be asked to choose a rocker and name your band. Create a custom rocker and make sure you create and save a custom tattoo, guitar and drum set. Name your band "Van Halen" and you will have earned 4 easy trophies. Don't forget to watch a VH Facts video along the way. Once you've completed all 4 careers and half of band career on the highest difficulties you'll have a total of 34 trophies if you earned 5 stars on all the VH songs in the 4 instrument careers.

STEP 3: Guest Artist Trophies (Trophies: 5)

Here you will play guest artist songs as the characters you unlocked in the various career modes. You do not have to play the instruments related to each character - you can play drums as Eddie or guitar as Alex so long as it's not a VH song. You will also choose one character and play any song (VH or guest) on all 4 instruments with that character. This step will bring your trophy count to 39.

STEP 4: 3-4 Player Trophies (Trophies: 7)

These have to be done offline with real people, because the servers have now closed. With the exception of "You Really Got Me", all of these trophies will require 4 people, one on each instrument, but if you don't have a singer and the trophy doesn't require expert difficulty you can use the fan trick. "Hot For High Scores" will require everyone to play on expert. This step will bring your trophy count to 46 and unlock the Platinum for 47. If you're still missing some trophies you'll move on to...

STEP 5: Cleanup

While playing through the various career modes, it's probably safe to say you didn't quite manage to 5-star every VH song on every instrument. You may not have scored 225,000pts playing "I'm The One" on guitar, either. Now it's time to sharpen your skills and practice, practice, practice. Check out the forums or search for YouTube videos for hints on how to get the most difficult songs under control. Earning this platinum comes with some serious bragging rights... Good luck!

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/256/01.jpg Platinum Artist (P)

Earn all of the Bronze, Silver and Gold Trophies in Guitar Hero Van Halen.

One of the most difficult of any music game out there. If you get it, congratulate yourself, ice down your hands and feel the pride....

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/256/04.jpg Have You Seen His Grades? (B)

Complete a tutorial level.

Simply sit/play through any tutorial for any instrument. You don't have to finish the entire tutorial, only one section.

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/256/05.jpg It's Alive (B)

Unlock Eddie's Frankenstein guitar.

You will get this as you progress through the guitar career. See "EVH".

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/256/17.jpg Intruder (B)

Complete the career intro.

When you begin career mode on any instrument, you'll play through "Panama" and "Runnin' With The Devil". Simply pass these two songs.

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/256/18.jpg Van Halen (B)

Complete a career on Beginner.

See "Diver Down".

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/256/19.jpg Every Band Wants Some!! (B)

Complete a song in a full band. (4 player band)

This can be done locally or online, with any song in the game. Any difficulty can be used, so placing a beginner mic in front of a fan (the "fan trick") will work if you can only get three people.

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/256/20.jpg They Ran With the Devil (B)

All band members hit a 50 note streak at the same time. (4 player band)

The easiest way is to have every instrument on beginner. You'll get this while going for "Somebody Get Them A Doctor". The fan trick is helpful here, too.

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/256/21.jpg Somebody Get Them A Doctor (B)

Hit 100% of the notes in a song as a band. (4 player band)

This should also be done with everyone on beginner to avoid frustration. It's alright if someone overhits/strums and breaks their combo so long as every note is played correctly. Again, the fan trick will work.

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/256/22.jpg Atomic Power Punk (B)

All band members activate Star Power at the same time. (4 player band)

All 4 instruments must have star power activated simultaneously. The activation itself doesn't have to happen at exactly the same time. This trophy should be done at the same time as "Hung High" (see below). It is not necessary to finish the song - the trophy will pop as soon as everyone is activated.

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/256/23.jpg Hung High (B)

All band members earn an 8x multiplier at the same time. (4 player band)

Same as "Atomic Power Punk", only everyone must have a 4x multiplier when star power is activated. If you're using the fan trick while playing another instrument, keep your PS3 controller handy as any button will activate SP. Either tap a button with your foot or quickly reach down from whatever instrument you're playing so you don't break your combo. It is not necessary to finish the song - the trophy will pop as soon as everyone is activated with a 4x multiplier.

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/256/24.jpg EVH (B)

Unlock all of the Van Halen instruments.

There are a total of 15 instruments to unlock in the various career modes: 6 in Guitar, 3 in Bass, 1 in Vocals, 1 in Drums and 4 in Band. You will unlock a new instrument for every 25 stars you earn in each career mode until you have them all.

*Note: it may not be necessary to unlock the Monster Kit in drum career for this trophy, as it's not a VH-specific instrument.

(**Credit to Squodge for confirming 4 band instruments)

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/256/28.jpg The Broken Combs (B)

Complete a gig in West Hollywood.

Complete every song in West Hollywood on any instrument.

Complete a career on Easy. (Band or Solo)

See "Diver Down".

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/256/31.jpg Jump (B)

Complete all Van Halen songs. (Band or Solo Career)

Pick any instrument, and play career mode until you've unlocked "The Early Years" venue, then finish every VH song in that career.

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/256/32.jpg Unchained (B)

Unlock all Van Halen characters.

There are eight characters to unlock, 2 in each instrument's career: each of the four members of VH and their "classic" counterparts. Earning 100 stars in a career unlocks the regular character and 200 gets you the classic version.

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/256/33.jpg Far Away Lands (B)

Complete gigs in London and The Netherlands.

Complete every song in London and The Netherlands on any instrument.

Complete a career on Medium. (Band or Solo)

See "Diver Down".

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/256/36.jpg Guitar God (G)

5 star all Van Halen songs on Guitar Career. (expert)

Start a guitar career on expert and finish every VH song with 5 stars. While "Cathedral" will give your fingers a bit of a workout, it's "Eruption" and "Spanish Fly" that will give you the most trouble. GH:VH is actually quite accurate with guitar technique - you'll probably have to work out Eddie's two-handed tapping style to get these two songs down. Practice them at slower speeds until you've learned the note charts inside & out, then gradually increase the speed until you get them down. Turning on hyperspeed in the cheats menu will also help a bit by spreading the notes further apart making them easier to see. Good luck!

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/256/37.jpg Diamond in the Rough (S)

5 star all Van Halen songs on Vocal Career. (expert)

Start a vocal career on expert and finish every VH song in the game with 5 stars. There's no trick to this one, you just have to earn it. Dave's vocals are all over the place at times so the best advice is to practice, practice, practice. Be sure to make good use of star power and freeform sections as these are crucial to getting the scores needed.

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/256/38.jpg Double Bass Master (S)

5 star all Van Halen songs on Drum Career. (expert)

Start a drum career on expert and finish every VH song in the game with 5 stars. Again, there's no easy way to get this. Alex Van Halen has a very unique drumming style, and it's represented well in the game. "Hot For Teacher" and "Loss Of Control" are by far the two most difficult songs to 5-star. Finding a second person to work the kick pedal while you hit the pads will help, but you'll both need to practice quite a bit.

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/256/39.jpg 316 (S)

5 star all Van Halen songs on Bass Career. (expert)

Start a bass career on expert and finish every VH song with 5 stars. This one is nowhere near as difficult as the other instruments. Some the basslines can get tricky at times, but there's nothing too tough to worry about.

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/256/40.jpg The Tour is Ending (S)

Complete a majority of the gigs. (Band or Solo)

This will unlock in any career once you finish every song in over 50% of the cities.

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/256/41.jpg Fair Warning (S)

Complete a career on Hard. (Band or Solo)

See "Diver Down".

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/256/44.jpg Diver Down (S)

Complete a career on Expert. (Band or Solo)

Complete any instrument's career to 100% on expert difficulty. Just finish every song in the game. It doesn't have to be pretty, you just have to pass them. Easiest on bass or vocals. Can also be done in band career.

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/256/45.jpg 1984 (S)

Complete a career on Expert+. (Solo Drum)

Start a drum career on expert+ and finish every song in the game. You'll need to have two kick pedals on your drum kit in order to do this. Once again, "Hot For Teacher" and "Loss Of Control" will be your most difficult challenges.

5 star guitar for 'Little Guitars', 'Cathedral', 'Spanish Fly', and 'Eruption.' (expert)

See "Guitar God".

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/256/47.jpg 5150 (G)

Complete all Van Halen songs on every instrument. (Guitar, Bass, Drums, and Vocals)

This will unlock as you finish each instrument's career mode. Again, you only have to pass the songs, not 5-star them.

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/256/02.jpg Can I Borrow a Quarter? (B)(H)

Create a custom guitar.

This should say "create and save a custom guitar". Under the edit rocker menu, select "instrument", then "guitar". You can just use the "random" option as long as you save whatever you end up with.

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/256/03.jpg Bang your Gong (B)(H)

Create a custom drum set.

This should say "create and save a custom drum set". Under the edit rocker menu, select "instrument", then "drums". You can just use the "random" option as long as you save whatever you end up with.

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/256/06.jpg Ouch!! (B)(H)

Create a custom tattoo.

This should say "create and save a custom tattoo". Under the edit rocker menu, select "body", then "tattoos". You can just use the "random" option as long as you save whatever you end up with.

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/256/07.jpg Break that String (B)(H)

Complete the song 'I Want It All' as Eddie playing guitar.

Once you've unlocked Eddie in guitar career, select him under the "select rocker" menu and finish the song on guitar. Easy.

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/256/08.jpg Beaten (B)(H)

Win a guest artist song as Eddie.

See "Break That String".

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/256/09.jpg The Ice Cream Man (B)(H)

Win a guest artist song as Dave.

Once you've unlocked Dave in the vocal career, select him under the "select rocker" menu and finish any non-VH song. Can be done on any instrument.

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/256/10.jpg Brown Sound (B)(H)

Rock out as classic Eddie.

You do not have to unlock the classic character for this trophy. Once you've unlocked the last gig in guitar career (the early years), all VH characters will become the "classic" versions. Just play one of these songs on guitar.

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/256/11.jpg Diamond Dave (B)(H)

Rock out as classic Dave.

You do not have to unlock the classic character for this trophy. Once you've unlocked the last gig in vocal career (the early years), all VH characters will become the "classic" versions. Just play one of these songs on vocals.

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/256/12.jpg No Brown M&M's!! (B)(H)

Watch the facts for a Van Halen song.

After completing any VH song in any career, you'll notice a flashing red exclamation point beside the song title in the song selection list. Choose "song extras", then "facts. You must finish watching the entire song to get the trophy.

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/256/13.jpg Born to Rock (B)(H)

Rock out as classic Wolfgang.

You do not have to unlock the classic character for this trophy. Once you've unlocked the last gig in bass career (the early years), all VH characters will become the "classic" versions. Just play one of these songs on bass.

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/256/14.jpg I Have a Sound System (B)(H)

Create a band named 'Van Halen'.

In the "band info" menu, rename the band "Van Halen". Punctuation is important here - "vanhalen" won't get you the trophy.

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/256/15.jpg You Really Got Me (B)(H)

Win a song as a band with Eddie on guitar, Alex on drums and Wolfgang on bass. (3 player Band)

This will not work with a 4-player band - it has to be 3. Choose any song in quickplay or career and make sure that each instrument is using the right character. You must finish the song to get the trophy. Here's a perfect strategy submitted by Squodge:

This trophy can be gotten by 1 person who has the 3 required instruments.

Set the 3 players on the correct instruments and characters. You will play Eddie on guitar (choose whatever level you like), and for bass & drums choose beginner. Now choose the song Eruption - there are something like 5 notes for bass and 2 notes for drums, so it's impossible to fail this song even though the bass & drums aren't being played. After the song finishes, you have your trophy.

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/256/16.jpg Good Times (B)(H)

Perform on every instrument with a member of Van Halen in Quickplay or Career.

Once you've unlocked any of the VH characters, select them as your rocker and play a song on every instrument with that character.

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/256/25.jpg Hot for High Scores (B)(H)

Score 800,000 on 'Hot for Teacher' as a band on Expert. (4 player band)

This is not as difficult as it sounds. You don't actually need to be on expert for this to pop - you just need 800,000 pts, which is easier if at least a couple of people are on expert. Make sure you finish the song, or the trophy won't pop.

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/256/26.jpg I'm the One (B)(H)

Score 225,000 on 'I'm the One' on expert guitar.

This one can be tough, but it's not nearly as hard as some of the other guitar-related trophies. As always, practice the song until you know the chart. Keeping a combo going through the rhythm parts is a must, but it is not necessary to hit the solo 100%. Keep practicing and it will come.

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/256/27.jpg Respect the Wind (B)(H)

Win a guest artist song as Alex.

Once you've unlocked Alex in the drum career, select him as your rocker and finish any non-VH song with him on any instrument.

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/256/42.jpg King Arthur (B)(H)

Rock out as classic Alex.

You do not have to unlock the classic character for this trophy. Once you've unlocked the last gig in drum career (the early years), all VH characters will become the "classic" versions. Just play one of these songs on drums.

EDIT: I recently spoke with one of the players I was with and apparently my memory sucks - although it is possible to score well above 800,000pts on HFT with some instruments on hard, all 4 players must be on expert in order for this trophy to unlock. Thanks, Will!

"Hot for High Scores": the trophy says to get 800,000 as a 4-player band on Expert. But in your guide, you say it's possible to score that amount with vocals on beginner and the other three on hard. Can you confirm that you got the trophy this way, as the trophy description does say 'expert'?

I got well over the needed amount with beginner vocals "feeding" the real band members star power. I played expert bass, and played with "decent" and by decent I mean them hitting only a handful of notes, with I believe medium drums and hard guitar. This trophy is overrated and not as hard as it looks. I however did almost FC the song on expert bass so apparently you need at least one person holding the band together with a solid multiplier all the time.

Epic guide Razorhoof78. It's been months on end before a guide was finally released for this game, didn't know if there ever was going to be. Kudos to you, everything looks great. Had a question about the trophy: "Double Bass Master Silver Trophy 5 star all Van Halen songs on Drum Career. (expert)" Now I'm assuming since it says "Expert" and not "Expert+" that means that I can go through and play Expert for ALL the songs and for the Expert+ compatible songs like Hot for Teacher and such I can just play expert? I don't know what the difference would be in order to 5 star them, I can play Expert+ and have 2 bass pedals but every little note counts to 5 star these gruesomely hard songs on van halen and wouldn't mind something to push me over the edge to achieve 5 stars.

Second trophy question is about: "1984 Silver Trophy Complete a career on Expert+. (Solo Drum)" Does that mean I will be required to complete every song on the came, including guest artist songs and make sure I have got a score on each song in the game before this trophy will unlock?

Yup, every song in the game.

Thank you. :D

Now once(if) I can go through an complete all the songs on Expert+ for the 1984 trophy, and I go back and 5 star all of the songs that are only by Van Halen on just Expert difficulty, will these conflict with each other when making the trophies unlock?

Not if you finish the expert+ career first. You may be able to 5* them before getting the X+, but to be safe I'd finish the career first. I'm still working on it myself (I've taken a break from VH because Spanish Fly and HOt For Teacher are driving me nuts).

  • 2 weeks later...

EVH: Unlock all the instruments.

I've gotten 200+ stars in guitar career, 200+ stars in bass career, 100+ stars in vocals, 100+ stars in drums, and 75 stars in band career. Yet the EVH trophy hasn't popped. I'm sure it's not a glitch - would I have missed anything? Your guide states you get one instrument per 25 stars, so I seem to have fulfilled the criteria.

Your guide suggests that there are 3 instruments to unlock in band career, and when I got 75 stars the third instrument was awarded. But still no trophy. Perhaps there are more than 3 instruments needed from band career?

Okay, something to change in your guide:

EVH: This trophy requires four instruments to be unlocked in band career. The 4th and final instrument is the Destroyer Guitar. Unlocking 4 instruments means getting 100 stars in band career. I previously got 75 stars (hence unlocking 3 instruments), and I didn't get the trophy.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/256/15.jpgYou Really Got Me Bronze Trophy

Win a song as a band with Eddie on guitar, Alex on drums and Wolfgang on bass. (3 player Band)

Most of us can't get enough local players to help us with multiplayer trophies, so we end up doing them online (I got 6 trophies online last night). But this trophy can be gotten by 1 person who has the 3 required instruments. That's how I got this trophy.

I'm the One Bronze Trophy Score 225,000 on 'I'm the One' on expert guitar.

This one can be tough, but it's not nearly as hard as some of the other guitar-related trophies. As always, practice the song until you know the chart. Keeping a combo going through the rhythm parts is a must, but it is not necessary to hit the solo 100%. Keep practicing and it will come.

1. the riff is really easy cuz vh has biggest ever timing window:

it starts:

GGGBGGGYGGGBGR

play it: (d=down-, u=up-strum)

ddudududududud and just focus on hitting B, Y, B and R downstrumming; u will see it works perfectly, practise like 3-4 times and u will get the 'wrong' beat perfectly fitting into the riff.

2. we now know how to FC the riff; it has most notes outside bridges and solo => starpower will be activated there only! (+ an the end w( those chards starting)

reason: u have a 4x multiplier vs a 1-2x multiplier in bridge/ solo but these do NOT! have more than dbl the amount of notes (+ u will miss a few here and there) so its easy math: riff is where u get most points from.

this obv is just for ppl like me who arent pros at GH; they wont need help w/ this score anyway :)

i had a 120k on my first run - 140k - 170k (long time (like an hour XD) then i moved up in 5k steps till i reached 215k

then i tried to use SP @ riff only; even tho i did not get a "full" 11/13 SP phrases (those other 2 are up for pros hidden in bridges -.-) and still made 232k just by better SP usage, altho my play wasnt any better.

92% should do it

had like 10 100% sections (dunno about any overstrummings tbh)
