Introduction:

Galak-Z puts you into a spaceship that can transform into a mech, and asks you to blow up other ships. It's even got an anime-inspired story to keep your interest piqued, but really we're all here to blow stuff up, right? The art style really lends itself well to the shoot-em-up genre, so strap in!

Galak-Z features something of a rogue-like element to it, to the effect that each "Season" is treated like a season of a show on television, and failing any part of it means the end of the Season. What this means is that if you die... you start the Season over from the beginning! Do you have what it takes to complete each of the 5 Seasons? Find out in this exciting anime space shooter!

General Gameplay Information:

Seasons in this game consist of 5 levels which you must complete in order without dying at all. If you do die, you will have to start over at the beginning of the season, with none of the salvage or upgrades that you collected. You will however keep any blueprints you picked up. You CAN save your progress to the PS+ cloud, thus negating the negative effects of death, allowing you to continue from where you left off if necessary. I suggest uploading your save to the cloud between each level in order to save yourself having to start any seasons from scratch, which would waste a lot of time, more as you get further on. Also keep in mind that if you pause and "Quit to Title" whilst playing a mission, you will lose all progress in the current season! ONLY exit the game when you are safe inside the hub ship.

As you play the game you will come across various chests floating in the caves you have to navigate through. Some of these chests contain salvage (money), while other will contain upgrades for your ship. Always stop to pick these up as you never know what you might get, and they are beneficial in some way almost every time. You will also rarely come across "Crash Coins"; these are the only currency that you can carry forward to the next Season. Basically Crash Coins sit in your inventory for the duration of the current Season, and when the next Season comes, Crash will buy them from you for a huge premium, starting you off on the next season with upwards of a few thousand salvage to spend on upgrades. You can actually spend 5 Crash Coins if you die on a level to retry the level if you choose, but using the PS+ Cloud Save feature is far more economical, especially considering that you still lose all of your upgrades (though they are added to the current level via a supply crate hidden within).

All enemies you kill will drop salvage, while larger enemies will typically also drop missiles to refill your stock. It's a good idea to use missiles on these larger enemies as they will replenish you in turn, and you really don't need to save your missiles for some surprise fight that's never going to happen. So use the missiles you have when you need to to make things easier on yourself.

Additionally, always be mindful of your shields. Shields will replenish after a short period of time (a few seconds), so if you're in a fight and you notice your shields are down, it may be best to focus on dodging to allow your shield to regenerate. Shields will infinitely regenerate for free, while losing health requires that you pay to replenish it.

Another feature of the game is the options available to you in regards to how you approach each enemy. Enemies in this game have vision cones displayed that allow you to see if they've spotted you. If an enemy doesn't know you're there, they won't attack, so you could actually take a stealth approach if you prefer, avoiding a decent number of fights. This won't be overly conducive to getting the three kill count trophies, but sometimes you're low on health and that group of large enemies ahead can be pretty intimidating! Keep in mind that an enemy you don't kill is salvage you don't earn, but it sure beats having to start over if you die!

Walkthrough:

Step 1: Complete the Campaign

The list in this game is really quite simple, and the majority of the trophies are story related. Complete the campaign and you should have 100%, or close to it. The game starts with a tutorial which will get you up and running nice and quick.

Upon completion of this step you will have earned the following:

  • Golden Wings (S)
  • Variable Fighter (S)
  • Darkest Before Dawn (B)
  • Metamorphosis (B)
  • Bow to the Master (B)
  • Swashbuckled! (B)

Step 2: Miscellaneous clean up, beat a level without getting hit

Odds are that you earned these trophies while playing the campaign, but if not, check the trophy guide below to find where you need to go to farm the rest of the kills you need.

Upon completion of this step you will have earned the following:

  • Off In Outer Space (G)
  • Can't Touch This (S)
  • Sea of Stars (B)
  • Fall of Empire (B)
  • Understand the Bug (B)

Unlock All Trophies

The poor man's platinum, this gold trophy is awarded when all others have been earned.

Complete Intro Tutorial

When you first start playing the game, you will be taken through a tutorial. Even if you play a lot of shoot-em-ups, the game may be a bit disorienting at first. I suggest taking your time and familiarizing yourself with the controls. The game ramps up quite slowly, so nothing to worry about if you don't internalize everything right away.

Complete Mech Tutorial

The Mech Tutorial acts as your intro to Season 2, and will give you instructions on how to best utilize your mech form. Simply complete the tutorial level and the trophy is yours.

Slay White Tusk

The bulk of Season One is simple missions consisting of picking up items and defeating Imperials and Space Bugs along the way. Nothing overly difficult here, you'll be earning your wings, so to say, learning the ropes in your basic ship.

The boss for Season 1 can be quite difficult given your probable lack of overall experience and upgrades, but should be manageable if you've mastered shooting while backing up. Use :l2: to keep your distance from the boss while he comes toward you, shooting and using your missiles as much as you can. Note that you can boost while going in reverse to better keep your distance. If the boss gets too close, fire your thrusters and dodge to the his side. Time your duke (:square:) to avoid his attacks as best you can. Happily, the boss "arena" is wide open, so if you take damage to your shields you can easily run away to refresh them.

Rescue Admiral Akamoto

This Season will start you off with the Mech form of your ship. You went a whole "Season" without knowing your ship could become a Mech? Plot twist! Switch from your ship to the mech and back with :triangle:.

This Season is also where you will encounter your first Void Raiders. These enemies are similar to the Imperials, so use the same tactics as you would on them when encountering these guys.

Season 2 ramps up the difficulty with increased amounts of large enemies. The sword enemies you encountered in the last Season are regular enemies often paired with other large enemies, so keep your cool and remember to back away while shooting (:l2:), dodge (:square:), and strafe (:l1:) when being shot at. There are lots of tight space station corridors in this Season, so use that to your advantage and destroy enemies with the environment by picking up objects as the Mech (:square:) and throwing them at enemies (:square: again); using exploding set pieces on groups of enemies is a quick and easy way to get the jump on them, killing off smaller enemies instantly.

Happily, the boss for this Season is technically nothing you haven't dealt with before. The only real difficult part about the boss is the setting you must fight him in. For the boss fight you are placed into an enclosed space with two turrets and a large sword-wielding Imperial. The room is taller than it is wide, and your Mech will be all but useless against the heavily armed Imperial, so take to the ship and do your best to dodge his attacks when he gets close. By now if you've not mastered shooting enemies while backing away, it might be a good time to practice. Weave back and forth up and down through the room while shooting at the boss (don't forget about your missiles!), and he should go down relatively quickly. I suggest ignoring the turrets (they are heavily shielded), and just keep hitting :square: to dodge whenever any bullets or the boss get near. Basically this entire has been full of these enemies in order to prepare you for this fight!

Steal the Void Raiders' Star Map

The entirety of Season 3 is surprisingly easy compared to the Season 2. Much of the Season's enemies can be skipped, and even the boss is one you simply run from. There are a few new enemies to contend with, but nothing too different from what you've seen already. One enemy in particular is quite large and thin compared to the rest you've encountered thus far, and he will aim at you with a green beam before firing; this is a sniper and they are very dangerous from a distance, but once you get up beside them you can just keep shooting them until they die and they can't do anything about it, so keep that in mind if you run into any.

As mentioned above, the boss for this Season is extremely simple. You will be tasked with finding a map in a small space station filled with Void Raiders. When you find it it is painfully clear that it's being help by a large Mech. Fortunately, you won't be fighting this Raider King just yet, so make a run for it once you've picked up the map. You will find that your path has been blocked off, and the game doesn't really tell you what to do here (perhaps trying to garner a cheap death to make you start the Season over from scratch). When you come to the large barriers that have been erected, drop the map and shoot/slash at the glowing green bars to weaken the door, and open it. You will have to do this a total of three times to get out of the station. When you're clear of the station, it's as simple as getting to and using the warp point to leave the level.

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/2600/99c.jpg Swashbuckled! (B) :tagstory:

Defeat the Raider King

Season 4 is more of the same as far as the levels are concerned, but the boss certainly makes up for the ease of the last Season.

When you come to the boss it will be just you and the Raider King, one on one. The only catch is that his ship is MUCH bigger than yours. The Raider King has two phases, the first of which being much longer and more difficult than the second. He will be constantly shooting many bullets at you, so you will want to keep your distance and be ready to run away to let your shields recharge when necessary. When you have shields you need to circle him and shoot at the three turrets at the front and sides of the ship. Keep on repeatedly going in, shooting, then running away to conserve health; this phase will take a while, at least a few minutes.

The boss' second phase is more or less the same, but instead of shooting many normal bullets he will start to shoot homing missiles which you must dodge, and you need to shoot at the now exposed pieces of his ship. Use the same tactics as before and you should be fine.

Complete a mission without getting hit

Glitch Warning: This trophy on the EU version of the game seems to be glitched; it currently only works on the Void stage. Try the below method on the Void level and it should pop for you.

This trophy may come naturally, but if not it is relatively easy as long as you focus on it. If you take any damage (including to your shield), you will have to try again.

Most enemies on the early levels can be skipped altogether, and some don't even shoot at you, functioning solely as alerts for other, larger enemies. You are able to move more quickly than the enemies in this game by using your boost (:r1:), so take advantage of that to put some distance between you and them.

Note that at the end of every level there will be a group of enemies patrolling the stage exit. You will need to either distract and lure away these enemies, or destroy them, in order to exit the level.

Refer to the video below to see a successful no-hit run of Season 1 Episode 1. Note that the levels are ordered randomly, so the level 1-1 below may not be quite the same as yours, but should be similar enough that you get the idea of how to go about earning the trophy.

Defeat 500 Void Raiders

Enemies in this game are shown on-screen via colored arrows representing their faction, and Void Raiders are represented by yellow.

Void Raiders begin to appear in Season two, and will be abundant, just like the other enemies you must kill for trophies. Void Raiders are more or less the same as Imperials, but they tend to use shotgun style weapons instead of automatic weapons like the Imperials use. Despite showing up in Season 2, Void Raiders are the bulk of the enemy forces in the third and fourth Seasons, so farming them in Season 3 is likely your best bet, so they are abundant, but not all large enemies. Killing 500 of these will take a few playthroughs of Season 3.

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/2600/99c.jpg Fall of Empire (B)

Defeat 500 Imperials

Enemies in this game are shown on-screen via colored arrows representing their faction, and Imperials are represented by purple.

Imperial kills are best farmed in Season One as they are many and weak. If you're going to farm on Season One I suggest using the Mech that you unlock in Season Two, as the charged shot will kill 99% of the enemies in the Season in just one or two hits with a charged blade (hold :cross:).

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/images/trophies/2600/99c.jpg Understand the Bug (B)

Defeat 500 Space Bugs

Enemies in this game are shown on-screen via colored arrows representing their faction, and Space bugs are represented by green.

Since bugs are primarily melee enemies, your best course of action for most of them is to back away while shooting at them. They will follow you at the same speed you fly, so with some practice you should be killing Space Bugs with ease in no time. The best place to farm these kills post-game will be Seasons One as it mostly has small bugs, making them easy prey.

Why have you created two guides? Surely just adding the trophy that been changed in the EU version underneath in the other guide would do? :shrugs:

Myself and Noid have had a long discussion about this and the amount of caveats and provisos that the US Guide would need to make it work with the EU version of the game (due to the extensive list differences), would have made it look incredibly messy and confusing so I approved the creation of this second Guide.

This has to be 1st time ever there is 2 guides for one game right?

Not really because some JP games get 2 Guides if they get localized and there have been other cases like Galak-Z where the game is the same but the trophies are different or there is some other issue which renders the other Guide unusable for that version of the game.

Wow totally thought this game was new on plus, talk about slipping under the radar.

 I'm hopeless at navigating my ship, feels like blowing a pea in a bucket of water... so without that cloudsave I'd have zero chance

Lol that is definitely one way of describing the movement. Happily, as you say, cloud save exists.

What makes the trophies so rare? besides being on ps+

Other than PS+, the fact 100% was unachievable at first may have something to do with it. The kill trophies are grindy too. The game is no more than a 5/10 though, particularly if you back up your save file regularly to save yourself having to replay an entire Season if you die. I expect the EU percentages to match the US percentages of about ~4% in time. It won't stay this rare.

Sorry guys, unfortunately if you're having trouble using the steps I gave in the guide, it would seem to be glitched yet again. Unfortunately the launch version of the game had this glitch, and was patched, and then more patches came. That being the case, I can't suggest a fix such as reverting to an older patch, it'd simply be impossible to do. :(

To be absolutely sure i did:

-finished 1 mission without getting hit

-finished it again without touching anything-walls/flowers/carcases etc

-finished entire first season without getting hit

-finished first mission in rouge and arcade without getting hit

-deleted and redownloaded game, deleted saves and data and then finished a mission without getting hit in arcade and rogue

-played first mission on different profile offline

-played on ps4 pro and ps4

All this have never ever given me this trophy. I really dont think that this will be ever patched after such long time since game release so it seems im stuck forever with this game being unfinished on my profile.

Could you add a warning to the trophy guide that EU 100% is no longer obtainable? If ive seen such warning i would just play game on different profile to check this out. Now there is no way for me to get this game out of my profile:(

You COULD hide the trophy list from your profile, though obviously then trophy sites will say you have a hidden list.

I'll add a note and tell the staff here on PST about it. Sorry for your trouble!
