Introduction

“The Last Chapter” introduces three new stages to the main game as well as a secret bonus stage. It also adds thirteen new challenges, many of which unlock additional specials to enhance your gameplay and give you extra advantages.

Roadmap

Step 1: Complete stages 8-10 while earning secret keys. Try to earn at least four keys per level is possible to unlock the secret stage and its associated challenges. Once you defeat the final boss at the end of stage 10, you will earn The Last Chapter.

Step 2: Complete challenges. Seven of the challenges will directly earn you a trophy. They are Speed Gunner, Stage Keys, Speed Collector, Rank Master, Kill Collector, Score Collector and Hellfire The other six unlock special abilities. You will need a total of seven specials for the King of Unlockables trophy. Depending on how many specials you unlocked from the game’s original challenges, you will have to complete anywhere from four to all six of these challenges.

Step 3: Misc. trophies and cleanup. If you haven’t already, you will need to collect all fifteen secret keys from stages 8, 9 and 10 (five per stage). Note that they do not all have to be collected in the same run. Collecting all of the keys will unlock Key Master. You will also need to quickly kill the boss of stage 8 to unlock No time to waste.

Clear challenge ‘Speed Gunner’

This is a difficult challenge in which you must score 600,000 points within the time limit. You'll need to memorize where the clusters of enemies appear as well as the score bonuses from the breakable boxes. When you reach the first stopping point, let the enemies cluster so you can quickly pick them all off with the shockwave and keep the stage moving. Ideally you want to reach the second stopping point with enough time to kill one or both of the squidlike enemies with a limit attack (make sure you grab 3 special weapon powerups on the way). Another option is to try and kill all of the enemies at the first stopping point with your regular weapons. You'll have to be fairly fast in doing this or else your timer will expire before you reach the squid. Use your shockwave as soon as the first squid appears because at that point the timer will probably be almost up (this is the method I ended up completing the challenge with and I was just a few hundred points over 600K with less than a second to spare).

The Spread weapon is good for killing the sphere enemies from afar, but is lousy for everything else so be prepared to switch often. You get it along with the powerups in the beginning of the stage. This challenge's difficulty is fixed so you'll start off at a C (x20) ranking. Ideally you'll want to try and push it to B (x24), but make sure you never let it fall below C. I recommend using the Mexxus II alternating between the Spread weapon (for the spheres) and the magma weapon (for everything else).

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/390/16.jpg Stage Keys (B)

Clear challenge ‘Stage Keys’

This challenge requires you to collect all five secret keys in stage nine in a single run. Follow the same strategy as listed for Rank Master. The difficulty level you chose is up to you. You need to be rank D for keys 2-4 and rank B for the fifth key. Playing on a harder difficulty level starts you off at a higher rank, but it will be more difficult to maintain it. This challenge is doable on beginner difficulty. Just try to avoid being hit. Special weapons don't really help here, so grab the powerups as they appear in order to charge your limit attack for emergencies. In order to complete the challenge, you need to be at a B rank when you encounter the Guardian for the second time. See Key Master for the locations of the secret keys in this level.

Clear challenge 'Speed Collector'

You will need to play stage eight on any difficulty level and collect 37 extras within the time limit. This one is a no-brainer. Kill everything in sight and try to rack up as many chains as possible. Keep an eye out for enemies that emit a yellow glow as they will drop powerups when destroyed.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/390/18.jpg Rank Master (B)

Clear challenge 'Rank Master'

For this challenge you must complete the ninth stage without ever falling below a ‘C’ rank. Set the difficulty to beginner. Mexxus II and the magma weapon is what I used to finally beat this one. Try to kill the enemies as soon as you can to avoid giving them time to shoot at you. Your fire will scroll up with the stage, so use that to your advantage when taking out the smaller wall guns while on the move. Some key areas of difficulty I noticed:

- The shielded guns. Enemies will pour out of the wall in waves just above the middle part of the screen, so keep your fire focused in that area as you pop up and down to take out the guns. Clear the upper part first and then work on the lower ones.

- Just after the shielded guns. Stay near the top of the screen. The enemies that come in come in fast and fire a LOT of shots at you. Try to take them down before they can get a volley out.

- First encounter with the Guardian. Look for an opening to squeeze under it to go down the corridor. As you progress down, work your way toward the left wall, but be careful of the guns shooting behind you as you near the bottom. Squeeze through when an opening presents itself. Enemies will start pouring down the corridor shortly after so make sure you can get lined up with them before they get too many shots off.

- Both sets of rising/lowering guns. Be careful from the shots coming in from below. Line yourself up with the guns and keep fire on them. Keep an eye out for rockets though and try not to let any get behind you. If you do, be prepared to fly up to have them circle around front or until they run out of gas. The middle/top of the screen is a heavy fire zone though, so try not to linger for too long. If you have a limit attack available, you may want to consider using it if you get into a jam.

- The second large set of guns while climbing. The amount of fire on the screen gets crazy fast. The upper part of the screen is a disaster so focus your fire on the bottom guns and work your way up when you get an opening. The hard part about this area are the guns near the top and on the inside that shoot the large rings. The window to find an opening to take them out will be small, so do some fancy flying until then. If you have a shockwave, you may want to consider using it assuming you can get close enough to take down a few guns with it. Just be patient with this part and use the dodging strategy mentioned above to evade fire. You may also want to consider switching weapons so you can hit the guns from a safer angle.

- Second encounter with the Guardian. This section isn't too hard, but keep an eye out for the rockets the guardian fires. Try to shoot them down and not let any get behind you. You'll be doing a lot of back and forth maneuvering when the missiles start firing so you want to minimize your movement when possible. Once the guardian is down, just keep fire on the structure and use your shockwave if you have it.

For this challenge, you just need to keep your rating at C or higher, so you can afford to take a hit every now and then. Just don't take too many in succession and definitely try not to let any rockets hit you. Also remember that direct collisions don't affect your health or rating as much as enemy fire does as long as the collisions aren't prolonged. Keep this in mind if you get stuck between a bullet and a physical object. Save your limit attack as a last resort if you get caught in a bind.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/390/19.jpg Kill Collector (B)

Clear challenge 'Kill Collector 1'

You must kill 475 enemies in the first section of the secret stage. Use the Final Prototype's Beam weapon. Try to kill as much as possible, but focus on the smaller enemies as they come in tight formations, making them easy cleanups with the beam. Kill the larger enemies when possible, but focus on the small ones as these challenges are based on total kills.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/390/20.jpg Score Collector

Clear challenge 'Score collector 1'

Same strategy as Kill Collector, but this time focus on the larger enemies as they will net you a lot more points. Kill clusters of small enemies when the opportunities present themselves but prioritize the larger ones. The Final Prototype’s beam weapon will do nicely as you can damage/kill multiple enemies at a time. Try to avoid getting hit if possible because you want to keep your score multiplier up.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/390/21.jpg Hellfire (B)

Clear challenge 'Hellfire'

Pick the Mexxus II and use the magma weapon. During the first half of the first section, try to kill as much as you can. When an enemy fires, try to kill it before it can get off a second shot. As you progress through this section, keep toward the upper middle section as a lot of the shots will come from there. Dodge the shots coming from the bottom section.

For sections two and three, stay around the bottom and keep the fire button held down. Your weapon is mainly to clear a path so you don't have to worry about collisions, but you'll take a lot of shooters down with you.

The key to dodging the enemy fire (which are all in circular rings) is to treat the bullet rings as the face of a clock. Try to pass through the rings between the 7:30 and 10:30 positions. Ideally, the 9:00 position is the best because you can sail straight through, but seeing as most of your fire will come from the opposite end of the screen that will rarely be the case. As each ring approaches you, move forward slightly to squeeze between the bullets. Try not to get too vertical with the bullet rings or else you will not have much maneuvering room due to the length of your ship; you can get into serious trouble this way if you are trying to make it through two rings at once. You are only allowed to get hit once by enemy fire, so be very careful.

Complete the tenth stage ('Inner Core') at any difficulty level

Self explanatory. The trophy will unlock once you defeat the final boss.

Unlock at least seven specials

There are nine total specials you can earn from completing various challenges. You must unlock seven of them. Note that some of the challenges are from the main game. Here are the challenges that have specials as awards as well as some tips for some of them:

-Assassin

-Key Guide

-Ultimate Space Rogue: If you are going to try for this one, whether for the trophy or for the prestigious icon on the leaderboards, save this for the very end. Try to collect as many other specials and weapons as they will enhance your ship. Also, try to complete as many other challenges as possible to have as many continues as possible.

-Defense Belt: All you need to do is keep from getting hit, so don’t get too greedy.

-Route Planner: Enemies leave behind a large skull when they are destroyed. If you come in contact with the skull, you will automatically lose a life. The hard part about this challenge is that you need to kill a lot of enemies and keep your rank up to earn the most points. However, you have to be careful about where you kill the enemies because you do not want to make a line of skulls that you can’t navigate around. You don’t want to let too many get away either or else you won’t be able to earn enough points.

-Split Pain: Weapon choice depends on your ship of preference. You’ll want to use weapons that plaster an area, so use the secondary weapon for each ship (Thor = scatter, Mexxus II = magma, Final Prototype = beam). On a side note, the Spread special weapon is very effective in taking out the blue split enemies. Your biggest issue for this challenge is going to be crowd control. With the sheer number of enemies, you could have trouble destroying them all before they leave the screen. I recommend using the Final Prototype’s beam weapon as it is not hindered by enemies and can eliminate several at once.

-Damage Pain: Pick the Final Prototype and use the Pulse weapon. Do NOT grab any of the powerups. You lose health every time you damage an enemy. The pulse weapon is very strong and should kill most enemies in one or two hits. You don't want any stray shots hitting other enemies because it will cause your health to drop too fast (I learned this the hard way when I tried using the Mexxus II), so the non-powered pulse gun is your safest bet. Your health regenerates so take a breather if you get a bit low. Just avoid getting hit too much and try to target enemies that can die in one or two shots.

-Kill Collector 2: See strategy for Kill Collector

-Score Collector 2: See strategy for Score Collector

I personally recommended completing Damage Pain and Defense Belt as soon as they become available since their specials (starting the game with an additional ship & starting the game with a shockwave, respectively) can help tremendously when attempting the other challenges.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/390/25.jpg Key Master

Collect all 15 secret keys in stage eight through ten

Most of the keys have a rank requirement of D or B. How you choose your difficulty level is up to you. If you start at an easier difficulty, you will begin with a lower rank and will have to perform well in order to meet the required ranks in time to make the keys drop. If you start at a higher difficulty, your challenge will be to maintain the higher rank you start with.

Note that you can use the ‘continue’ trick. This trick is a method that can be used to obtain high-rank keys as well as for farming rare enemies. Play the game on ‘Very Hard’ difficulty. This will start you out as rank S. You are also reset to rank S every time you continue. When you are approaching a key location, lose your last life and continue. It will reset you to rank S and give you a few seconds of invincibility. If you time it correctly, the enemy with the key will appear shortly after you continue (assuming you did not make a mistake and drop below the required rank).

Here are the key locations as well as the ranks required to make them drop:

Stage 8

#1 - After two of the medium-sized enemies appear at the same time, small clusters of the rotating dart-like ships appear (4 or 6 per cluster depending on your rank). The second cluster will appear on the bottom right of the screen. One of the enemies in this cluster has the key.

#2 - Shortly after the spiky disc enemies begin to appear, they will be in a snake-like formation with the disks on both ends and two spheres in the middle. They will enter mainly from the top of the screen. The tail disc of the last group that appears (there are about 10 groups total) has the key. (Rank D or higher)

#3 - After the second heavily armored shell-like enemy (drops mines) appears – spiky discs in sets of 3 will come down from the top. One of the enemies in the third set to the far right has the key. (Rank D or higher)

#4 - Shortly after a bunch of dart ships enter from the bottom of the screen in a staircase pattern dropping mines, three of the shell-like enemies will appear simultaneously. A small cluster of dart enemies will fly between them from the right. One of them has the key. (Rank D or higher)

#5 - Shortly after the mini-boss, some medium ships with a few scattered trios of spiked disks come in. They will be followed by a large group of disks with a few of the sphere enemies mixed in. You will know the group is close when you begin to see some sphere enemies. One of the tailing enemies in the upper part of the group has the key. (Rank B or higher)

Stage 9

#1 - Shortly after the first vertical climb. The enemy will be one of the last ones out of the tube.

#2 - Shortly after the first set of shielded guns. The enemy will be one of the ones that shoot out of the tubes. (Rank D or higher)

#3 - Shortly after the radar post you encounter after escaping the Guardian. It will be the last enemy that shoots out of the horizontal tube as you begin your ascent. (Rank D or higher)

#4 - After you pass the second large group of guns on your ascent, a large missile will fire out of the wall at you. Shortly after this missile is the enemy with the key. Try to grab it fast as you don't want it to get caught inside the wall. (Rank D or higher)

#5 - During the second encounter with the Guardian, it will move up and down while shooting a wave pattern of shots at you. Stay near the top of the screen and weave up and down above it. The enemy with the key will fly in below the Guardian right after this attack pattern ends. (Rank B or higher)

Stage 10

#1 - Right in the beginning of the stage. Some enemies will come in from the bottom. One of them has the key. You can't miss it.

#2 - Small sphere enemies will enter from the right on the upper half of the screen and start making spirals while firing a huge volley of shots. After the second group, a few slower enemies will come in the lower half of the screen. The one that is glowing yellow has the key. (Rank D or higher)

#3 - When you first encounter the bug-like enemies, the pilot will say "disturbing". About 6-7 seconds after that, the bug with the key just below the center of the screen will come in from the right. (Rank D or higher)

#4 - Shortly after the massive swarm of colored sphere enemies, a line of green enemies will enter the screen. After the second line of green enemies, a row of white circular enemies will enter from the right on the upper half of the screen. The last one in the formation will have the key. (Rank B or higher)

#5 - After the formation where a large yellow sphere is surrounded by a rectangle of green enemies, white circular enemies with a tail of blue/green orbs will enter. One of the groups will enter from the top of the screen travelling down. The tail enemy has the key. (Rank B or higher)

Defeat the final boss in stage eight in under 115 seconds

Use either the Final Prototype (flame) or the Mexxus II (fog). Try to grab your ships’s respective special weapon to use on the boss as they will do huge damage. If you are unable to acquire it, then use the beam/magma weapon. Also try to save your limit and shockwave attacks as well. Just remember that the boss isn’t always vulnerable so only use your big attacks when it exposed and has a good chunk of usable health.

Well done guide. It certainly helped me acquire a few of these trophies. I just passed the Rank Master Challenge. I thought i'd never get it. What a relief.

This game has immense replay value. It's a bit disheartening that more gamers haven't taken a liking to this title. I guess the days of Shmups are long gone.

Is it even possible with these weapons? i tried like 7 times yesterday with limit and shockwawe. I was really close on him for max damage but i got over 3 minutes every time.

Edit: I´m an idiot lol. Been trying stage 10 all this time when it was stage 8.

A few hours wasted
