'Rollover' Ads Need To Go

Not just from this site, but from the internet in general... but, since change begins at home, let's talk about them here.

It's extremely irritating to use my scroll bar and then slide my mouse over to, say, comment on a news article and have a giant advertisement cover my whole screen that only disappears when I locate a "Close" button. I understand the role that advertisers play in facilitating the delivery of high-quality content to my home, but is it possible for Staff (i.e. RX & Co.) to set parameters on the presentation of these advertisements?

My PC is muted most of the time so I'm unaware if these ads have audio. If they do, please triple the indignation in this post.

adblockplus is your friend

Yeah, that's probably the route I'm going to take, but I'll say this:

When everyone's blocking ads, ad-generated revenue disappears and, thus, so does the need for the ads themselves. Ergo, content that's funded by advertisements (e.g. ps3trophies.org) will have to be privately funded, or... disappear. :scared:

Thus, the best solution here would be to discourage the use of ads that disrupt the browsing experience, and encouraging static (and silent) banner ads.

Well if there is an option Ill take the pay for no advertisement if it is offered. If it is not it depends really on much I appreciate the site, if I don't appreciate much wasting a few seconds closing an ad is a waste of time, If I appreciate the site Ill just close it or ignore it as I realize its revenue so I can enjoy the site.

Basically there is a fine line between overdoing it and getting it right,

could not have said it better myself.

Adblock Plus is awesome and you wouldnt have any problems at all

EDIT: adds are always on the HOME page and not the FORUM page and honestly i hardly ever go to the HOME page anyways. :p

I've only had a few problems with the rollover ads. The ads I have problems with are the 'Safecount' ones that slide in from the left side of the screen and park right in the middle. And for some reason, its all in spanish. What I found weird about this is that there is the same ad up top by the 'user card'.

I've never had a scorecard thingy so that's good for me I guess :)

I can't agree more :applause:

If we all end up getting adblockers, then what's the point of having ads? If the site makes money from people clicking on them and it gets to the point where no one can see them then no profit will be made.

Plus anytime I get an intrusive ad (on any site) it makes me less likely to view it favourably. If a drop down ad gets in my way when i'm trying to do something then it's going to associate negative thoughts with it.

i agree that the site needs adds but i cant agree more that the rollovers need to go. Or at the very least they need to be moved, i mean they are right below the damn nav bar

This + 72,000

the amount of times I've been here, clicked forum to go straight back to the main forum page (save clicking "back" 12 times) then moved down to pre-empt the page only to find a white screen where the add should be (my work computer is slow as hell and hates loading things like that) - I then have to wait for it to load, and remove it by clicking to close it...

Perhaps they could be moved to the left/right of the main contents into the "grey" areas either side...

I dislike the roll-over ads as well. Especially when they auto-launch without even being rolled over.

I don't mind regular ads. It's added revenue, and sometimes in a blue moon I actually see something I want to click. However, when subscriptions finally hit ps3t.org, I hope one of the added benefits is the removal of adverts if you become a subscriber.

this x 1000000. I would quite happily not use ad-block if the ads used were subtle and non-disruptive. Like simply products taking up sections of the background etc. But when something opens in a new tab or a pop-up box appears covering my whole screen with something completely unrelated to what i'm searching it gets really frustrating.

If everyone uses adblock plus there will be no ad revenue as you've said, but with so many people using frustrating ads i just cant go five minutes without adblock anymore :(

EDIT: As i use adblock i am unsure of the adverts that are actually used on this site, but it would be nice to be able to remove it and 'help' this site with the ad revenue but i just cant face damn pop-ups and roll-overs.

I wholeheartedly agree. They've been a nuisance to me since I've joined this site. I can't remember how many times I went to click the 'Forum' button and had to wait 30 seconds or so for the ad to pop up and close it...

I've got a ad blocker and it sometimes won't work here.

At least once a day I'll get a pop up with a baby on it or something that just locks out what I'm doing for a few seconds. Pretty annoying when everything is flowing just right and it freezes.

And the ads at the top right hand corner must know what your doing on the internet.

80% of the time on my screen the ad is for "Buy sports collectables here". And that's usually what I'm doing on the internet when I'm not on this site. Or I'm looking at porn...
