As of May 31st, 2014, GameSpy Technology will stop providing hosting services for all the games still using GameSpy. The company revealed this yesterday in a statement on their website, which you can read below:

Effective May 31, 2014, GameSpy will cease providing all hosted services for all games still using GameSpy.

If you have any questions about how this impacts your favorite title please contact the game’s publisher for more information.

Thanks for a great ride!

While 100s of games are using GameSpy Technologies (check out the list as of 2010 right here), the majority does appear to be for the Wii and Nintendo DS, which Nintendo is shutting off servers for anyway on May 20th, but there will be some PlayStation titles affected by this (Red Dead Redemption could be one of them).

One of the first confirmed games to be affected by this GameSpy server shutdown is Dungeon Defenders from Trendy Entertainment. The developers sent out this statement today, confirming that the PS3 version of the game will have its servers shut down as of May 31st, 2014:

Unfortunately, the PlayStation 3 and non-Steam PC versions of Dungeon Defenders will no longer have multiplayer as a result of GameSpy closing as of May 31, 2014. We are contacting Sony to make sure any information about the game clearly reflects this change. The rest of the versions will continue to operate as usual.

Not giving out specifics, Capcom did say, “There are a few titles for which Capcom utilizes GameSpy’s matchmaking services for online gameplay. We are evaluating migration solutions and will have more information in the near future.” As well, Iron Galaxy revealed that 3rd Strike Online for PS3 no longer uses GameSpy, so it won’t be affected.

Elsewhere, Activision (via Polygon) has confirmed that none of their titles will be affected by the GameSpy shutdown, with Epic saying they have been “phasing out” GameSpy for its Unreal series of FPSs and they are “spinning [up an in-house solution] next week and we don’t foresee any impact.”
