Introduction:

Welcome to Dragon's Lair - a vintage classic retelling of a wildly popular animated laser disc arcade game originally created in the 1980's by renowned creator/animator Don Bluth. Dragon's Lair has been remastered in High Definition for PSN and the game simply looks stunning. The gameplay/storyline is told via beautifully hand animated storyboarded sequences in which you control Dirk the Daring on his adventures to rescue the captive Princess Daphne from the hideous Dragon.

However, Dragon's Lair isn't quite your ordinary game that makes full use of the Dualshock controller. The controls are very simplistic in nature and executed via :left:, :right:,, (Dirk's directional movements) and :cross: presses (Dirk's sword attack). In a manner of speaking though, you don't actually control the main hero of this tale but rather you press the correct buttons at the precise moments according to what action(s) are needed in any given scene, and in return Dirk performs the pre-rendered/animated action in the scene. And to help the player know whether or not he/she got the timing correct, Dragon's Lair has a well known famous "beep" sound which lets you know the move was successful. Actions input at the wrong time or simply incorrect for the requirements of the scene give off a distinct low-pitched 'thump' sound. You'll know the difference between the two sounds very early on.

Granted, everything in the game is based on being accurate with your timing. One false move in the wrong direction could easily kill Dirk just the same so take your time and try to memorize the movement requirements for Dirk in each individual areas and you'll master the game in no time. Moreover, the pathways and directions in which you're recommended to take are often times briefly lit up by a flash of light (sometimes yellow, blue or purple, etc). These can help your sense of direction in scenes where the obvious solution might not be so obvious. Conversely, there are a few scenes where you aren't given a noticeable direction to go but must input the correct action(s)s in order to succeed.

Dragon's Lair will most likely require lots of practice and repetition. Trial and error is also something you should expect as you learn and memorize all of Dirk's movements. But in any event, whether you're new to Dragon's Lair or a seasoned veteran to this classic, this beautifully animated game will undoubtedly provide a unique experience that you'll want to enjoy again and again.

Walkthrough:

Note: So far, my own experiences have revealed to me that Dragon's Lair trophies are not retroactive and do not stack. As such it seems that a playthrough is needed for each trophy. I've notated this in the Overview however if the information changes or needs to be updated, I'll adjust that accordingly. The good thing though is that the actual start-to-finish times are really short and shouldn't take you that long at all to complete.

Step 1: Watch the Tutorial and Game (For players who are new to Dragon's Lair)

For many players this will be the first time experiencing the game and therefore the learning curve may be a little steep. As such it wouldn't be a bad idea to select the "Tutorial" feature before trying Dragon's Lair for the first time. The Tutorial, though, isn't very in depth. It explains what you need to do with the :left:, :right:,, and :cross: buttons (sword) but overall it's a short viewing.

Next you should "Watch Game". Doing this will enable you to see Dirk's adventure through the entire castle leading up to the final boss fight against the Dragon. Keep in mind though that viewing the game in this mode wont actually show you the precise D-Pad movements for Dirk or when to press the :cross: button for his sword but at least you'll be able to see when he does those things in relation to the area(s) he's in. After watching the entire game you'll have a good idea of what you need to do but you'll still have some trial and error on the timing of each action.

Step 2: Unlock the Easy trophies

I wont get into too much detail on the actual trophy requirements here in the Road Map since that's covered in the Trophy Guide. The easiest trophy in Dragon's Lair to unlock is the Hidden trophy "Bumbling Knight". All you have to do is purposely do the incorrect moves for each of your lives in a new game and the trophy will unlock. Simple. Next, the "Save Me!" trophy should be your first priority since your main focus will be to complete the game on Easy without altering any of the modes/settings. You'll still have to learn all of Dirk's movement requirements for each of the castle rooms/areas but the overall gameplay length on Easy is shorter than on Hard. The final boss sequence is also a tad shorter on Easy than on Hard (by a few movements).

Since Dragon's Lair isn't retroactive on trophies you'll have to play the game on Easy again for the "Master Knight", "Singe Attack" and "Flawless". It's possible to simply reload a save file and beat the final boss again for a different trophy but that will be dependant on the specific trophy you're working on and conditions of your game when you last saved.

Step 3: Unlock the Hard trophies

Once you get to this point and have earned the Easy trophies then you probably have the game memorized by now, or at least have a respectable handle on the gameplay sequences. "Valiant Adventurer", "Dragon Slayer" and "Lair King" will be your goals during this step.

The gameplay on Hard mode is much faster than on Easy. Certain scenes have had the 'introduction' to them removed and get right to the moment where the actions are immediately required. You'll have to be on your toes and focused in order to successfully complete Hard mode. D-Pad and sword actions (:cross: button) timings are also much more strict in terms of accuracy. Lastly, certain rooms of the castle now have a few extra movements required (including the final boss fight) whereas in Easy mode they weren't necessary.

Note: Be sure and save your game often if you're having a rough time learning the scenes and/or completing the game. If you die you can always reload a save file and start where you left off rather than at the beginning of the game again. Also, many trophies require you to go to Settings and change and/or alter certain perks in order to unlock them. Be mindful of making these changes as you work on each trophy as the requirements vary with each of them. It should also be mentioned that "Valiant Adventurer" must be unlocked in Arcade mode. The rest of the trophies can be unlocked in either Arcade or Home modes (even though Home mode is for obtaining PlayStation Home items).

Also, you can expect to see repeated scenes as you play through the game, but reversed. This is quite normal so don't think your game has glitched or some such.

Trophy Guide:

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/823/01.jpgSave Me!http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/site/icons/trophy_bronze.png

Beat the game on any mode.

This should be unlocked after the "Bumbling Knight" trophy. You'll be required to complete new game in it's entirety (kill the Dragon) in order to obtain this trophy, so it's best to play through an Easy game on either Arcade or Home mode. At first though, expect a little trial and error. It's a good idea to save your gave frequently so you can reload a previous save file. This will especially come in handy for some of the trickier trophy requirements.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/823/03.jpgValiant Adventurerhttp://www.ps3trophies.org/images/site/icons/trophy_bronze.png

Beat the game on hard, arcade mode.

To aquire this trophy you'll need to beat the game on Hard & Arcade mode. Go to "Play Game" then select "Arcade Mode" then select "Hard". Completing the game with this setup will unlock the trophy.

Never make the correct move in a new game.

This is the easiest trophy in the game and takes a whole 60 seconds to unlock. Obtaining it can be done in any game mode but the fastest would be just to set your Lives at 3, start a new game, then purposely do the wrong moves for each of your lives. The trophy will unlock during the last death animation.

Thanks to Boilerfan for posting the information about this Hidden trophy.

Beat the game on easy, no move guide, 5 lives mode.

This trophy isn't as hard as it might seem at first. Once you've played through the game a few times with the on-screen D-Pad you'll eventually memorize when Dirk's movements are required in any given scene. As such, you wont have too much trouble working on this trophy without the on-screen D-Pad. Just take your time and practice.

Before starting a game for this trophy go to "Settings", then select "Move Guide" then select "Off". Press the "Back" button and then select "Lives". Press "Five". Now go all the way back to the main menu and select either "Arcade" or "Home" mode then press "Easy". Just complete the game with these settings and the trophy should unlock upon defeating the Dragon.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/823/06.jpgSinge Attackhttp://www.ps3trophies.org/images/site/icons/trophy_silver.png

Beat the game in 3 lives, any mode.

It's possible to unlock this trophy in various modes but I personally obtained this in Arcade mode on Easy with Lives set to 3. I played a perfect game (no deaths) and when I got to the final boss fight against the Dragon I allowed myself to get killed once. I then completed the game and then after the credits the trophy popped.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/823/06.jpgFlawlesshttp://www.ps3trophies.org/images/site/icons/trophy_silver.png

Beat the game without dying, any mode except infinite lives.

This trophy will require you to have a solid grasp of the gameplay dynamics for Dragon's Lair. At this point you'll need to have memorized each of Dirk's movements for all of the castle animation sequences. But by the time you've played the game a few times and have beaten it you'll be quite comfortable with what you've memorized and this trophy will probably come naturally over a short period of time.

To unlock this trophy, you can use any mode in any difficulty except "Infinite" so don't select that prior to beginning the game.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/823/07.jpgDragon Slayerhttp://www.ps3trophies.org/images/site/icons/trophy_gold.png

Beat the game on hard, no move guide, 3 lives mode.

You'll need to be a seasoned player in order to beat Dragon's Lair under these conditions. As mentioned in the Road Map, Hard mode is faster paced and has longer storyboard sequences throughout the entire playthrough. Even the final boss fight against the Dragon has a few extra movement requirements.

It might take a few attempts to aquire this trophy but just practice your timing and :left:, :right:,,, and :cross: accuracies and you shouldn't have too much trouble. I think with most people, completing the fight against the Dragon on Hard will take the most attempts. The fight itself isn't too long but it's fast-paced once things get going.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/823/07.jpgLair Kinghttp://www.ps3trophies.org/images/site/icons/trophy_gold.png

Get the highest possible score (427,469).

This trophy requires you to play Arcade mode on Easy. The key is getting the absolute most points from the game so this includes ensuring that certain extended scenes are played fully and accurately. It's a good idea to save your game right before each falling platform sequences so that if it's not an extended scene you can reload your game and keep going. Arcade mode on Easy provides bonus points in certain animation scenes that are otherwise unavailable in Home Easy mode.

  • You MUST play on Arcade Easy mode with five lives. Hard mode is missing a single point-awarding scene (the first whirlpool), and Home mode does not award you the 49-point starting bonus for the first scene. Three lives is not enough to get max points. This is actually true to the original arcade, and I am extremely surprised at the accuracy in this version.
  • On the falling elevator scenes, you must jump on the LAST POSSIBLE bridge to get maximum points. Keep in mind that two of the four scenes have NINE possible jumping locations (bridges). (Three of the four scenes start you facing left, and one of those continues after the first three bridges. The scene that starts you facing right ALWAYS has nine bridges.)
  • When you get to Singe's Lair, play your first four lives missing the last possible input, which is the Sword button after pressing up to dodge Singe's tail. On your last life, complete the game, and you should have the max score if you did everything right.

The idea is to make sure you're not inadvertently missing the extended scenes (9 exit sections instead of 3). These will happen randomly so it's important to save your game before each platform scene so you can either reload your game if it's NOT an extended scene or do the platform sequence hopping off ONLY at the very last (9th) section for maximum points. This is done for each of the 4 platform scenes.

Lastly, here's a link to a nice detailed Dragon's Lair Scoring Chart so you can tell how each scene/sequence awards points:

Unless otherwise stated this walkthrough will be on Easy mode. Any castle scenes that require extra movements in Hard mode will be notated accordingly here in the guide. Also, each time the game is played the animated scene sequences in which they appear are generated randomly. As such, these scenes wont be listed in any particular order. However the introductory castle scene will be listed first and the final boss fight against the Dragon will be listed last.

Introductory Castle (Arcade):

Nothing required. The Animation shows a purple night time scene in which Dirk the Daring enters the castle with gates and doors closing behind him.

Introductory Castle (Home):

As Dirk walks across the bridge he falls through and hangs there for a moment. A strange creature emerges from the moat. Press

:cross: and Dirk swings his sword at it and then climbs back up and runs into the castle. No furthur action needed in this scene.

Bedroom Stone Wall Closing Fast:

In this scene Dirk enters the bedroom and sees this wall in front of him magically forming and closing fast. He has only a moment to jump through the gap before he's trapped/killed. Press

:cross: right as you see the door on the other side of the wall light up or slightly before.

"Drink Me":

This tiny 'kitchen' presents Dirk with 2 options: Drink the potion on the table or exit stage right. You want to exit stage right by pressing the

:right: button. Drinking the potion will kill you and if you linger around the flames shooting out of the stove will fry you.

Underground Waterways: 3 Parts

  • Boulders -

    :left:, :right:, :left:, :right:

  • Rapids - You must press

 4 times slighly right before Dirk's barrel boat come in contact with the lighter colored 'pathway' part of the rapids leading forward.

  • Whirlpools -

:right:, :left:, :right:, :left: each movement must be before Dirk gets anywhere near the whirlpool. As his barrel smashes against the rocks and he's flung into the air, press :right: the same time the chain briefly lights up.

Falling Platforms:

You'll see this scene several times throughout each gameplay experience. The first time has Dirk facing to the left. When the platform falls it will briefly stop at 3 different sections. You can choose any of the 3 sections to exit from but you must be accurate with your timing and press the :left: (or :right: depending on which way Dirk is facing) right as the platform stops at the sections.

These particular scenes can be worth extra points under certain conditions This directly relates to obtaining the "Lair King!" trophy in which the Trophy Guide covers in detail.

Electric Cylinder Cage:

In this area, Dirk is temporarily trapped in a black cylinder-shaped cage which immediately begins to electrify itself starting from the bottom. You must press , pause for a split second then press  again to run through the jagged metal doors. The scene will follow Dirk running up to a bridge with electricity following closely behind him. You must wait till the first eruption passes and then press :left: to quickly cross the bridge.

Lizard King Throne Room:

For this sequence, Dirk temporarily loses his sword as an enchanted pot of gold magically takes it and quickly floats off. At the same time, the Lizard King is trying to smash Dirk over the head with his sceptor.

When the scene starts immediately press :left: to follow the pot of gold the moment it moves down the left hallway. Dirk runs down a hall at which point you press :right: right after the pot of gold runs by. Another short hallway. Press :right: again. Another short hallway shaped like a mushroom. Press :right: again. This scene shows the gold pot trudging along dropping gold pieces everywhere. Dirk comes to another opening. Press :right: again. Dirk comes to a fork in the area. Press :right: again. Now it's time to grab your sword back. In the scene that immediately follows, press either  or :cross: (either will work) to run up and grab your sword. Immediately press :cross: repeatedly until the Lizard King is dead. Don't worry about timing issues in this last segment, just keep pressing the sword button until he's dead.

Windtunnel Room:

In the Arcade mode you'll see Princess Daphne being carried through a door in front of you at which time you see the door starting to buldge violently. As Dirk approaches, the gust of wind bursts through and Dirk is carried through the door. In the next scene DO NOT press  to grab the shiny diamond, you'll die. Instead, press :right: as the door on the right lights up to escape to safety.

This scene on Hard mode doesn't show Daphne being carried off but instead gets right to the part where the door bursts so be focused when this happens.

Green Tenticle Room:

Dirk enters this room and a long green squid-like tenticle drops down from the ceiling towards the left of the room. Press :cross: to slice it then immediately press  to jump towards the rack of weapons in front of you (it lights up briefly). Then press :right: to jump to the right by the door (which also lights up) then press  to hop down towards the stairs. Pause for a moment and press :left: to jump onto the table to the left as it lights up. Another quick pause then press  to jump through the front door out of the room.

Disappearing Stone Stairs/Pit:

In this scene Dirk emerges from a room and begins walking down some stairs when suddenly they disappear and the floor becomes a slick drop-off towards the pit. Immediately press :left: to hop onto the small set of stairs to the right. A pink tenticle-thingie creature pops out of the pit to attack Dirk. Press :cross: to slash at it with your sword then immediately press :left: to move away from it. Press :left: to enter the small circurlar hole to leave the room. DO NOT press  to pull the chain. If you do the gate will open and you'll be flushed down the pit in a maelstrom of water.

Earthquake/Small Pool:

This scene happens very quickly and you must input simple but accurate movements in succession in order to escape unscathed. One trick to know which direction you're supposed to roll is notice the darker side of the room on either the left or right side. Whichever side is darker that is the direction you must roll to in order to prevent falling to your death.

So for this explanation we'll say the right side is darker. If it turns out the left side is darker then reverse the directions.

When the scene starts you'll hear a little musical sequence indicating danger happening. Press :right: immediately and roll towards the darker side of the room. Press  asap to roll underneath the slew of daggers that shoots out of the wall over you. Then press :left: to avoid dropping. Press  and jump into the pool. Press :right: to exit the pool before getting eaten by snakes then press . Wait for a second and then press :cross: as Dirk looks around and then up. The moment Dirk swings his sword immediately press :left: to hop onto the rising pillar. Wait till the door opens then press  and hop through before getting crushed.

Bats:

Dirk stands at the top of some wooden stairs which stirs up some bats. As he covers his head and bends over press :cross: to take a swipe at them. Immediately press :left: to move down the stairs. As you move down a section of the stairs breaks off. Jump forward toward the lit part of the stairs by pressing  before you fall off the edge.

In the next area, immediately press :cross: to dispatch the giant bat that appears in the doorway and tries to kill Dirk.

Note: This last scene in Hard mode will require you to press :left: after killing the bat in order to leave the room.

Thin Purple Checkerboard:

In this cramped dark scene Dirk ends up trying to balance himself on a teetering checkerboard platform which begins to disappear in sections. When the danger music starts press  to have Dirk hop towards the safer part of the disintegrating platform. Then press  and :left: in a flush series of movements to leave the scene. DO NOT press  to go through the door in front of you. It's a trap leading to a steep fall to your death.

Fire Ropes:

This scene can happen normally or mirrored. Just make sure and press the correct actions to have Dirk swing in whichever direction the scene dictates. But let's assume He needs to get across to the right of the firey chasm. Press :right: slightly just before the rope gets to him. Once he grabs on press :right: again. Then press :right: to grab the rope. Finally press :right: to hop onto the platform to safety.

If you wait too long either to begin this sequence or to hop onto the exit platform you'll fall into the fire.

Mechanical Horse:

This is another scene that takes place normally or mirrored. If the mechanical horse is facing towards the left, your very first move will be to the right. Conversely, if the scene starts off with the horse racing the right, your very first move will be to the left. However for example purposes, these instructions are as if the horse is facing the left when the scene begins.

Press :right: to move away from the fire wall, then :left: to do the same. Then press :right: again and then :left: again. Finally press :left: again to avoid the solid wall then :left: to avoid the final fire wall.

Skeleton Bones Hallway:

In this scene you see Daphne being carried off again. Start off by pressing  to jump foward away from the bouncing skulls on the ground. Press :cross: to slash at the huge skeleton hand about to grab you. Then press  again to avoid the black ooze and pours out of the side doors. Press :cross: to slash at the large hand again then immediately press either :left: or :right: depending on which direction the skeleton hand came from. You'll want to leave the opposite way. Then in the next scene press :cross: to take out the heckling skeletons.

Black Knight Horse:

This scene happens very quickly. It starts off immediately with a bolt of lightning hitting Dirk's sword and somehow temporary keeps him from removing it from it's sheath. On Hard mode you have to press either  or :right: to avoid this bolt as the scene begins (which happens almost instantly so you'll have to be quick). On Easy mode you don't have to do anything to avoid the lightning.

Next, you see the Black Knight approaching you. Press :left: to avoid the stalactites that come up from the ground. Then in the next scene press :left: again to avoid more stalactites. Be sure and time the moves though according to them lighting up. Finally in the last scene, Dirk's face shows him freaking out. Press :right: to avoid the stalactites that come up from the left and Dirk will roll to safety through a small tunnel.

Spinning Pugil Sticks:

The key to this sequence is timing. As Dirk approaches these spinning sticks you'll see him start to bob his head/body up and down. Wait till he bob's all the way down the first time then immediately press  to run through them. Once passed, press :cross: when you approach the reaper to kill it then immediately press  to escape the thorns trying to attack you. In the next scene press  as the door opens to escape to safety.

The Blacksmith/Ogre:

When Dirk enters the room an enchanted glowing yellow sword flies up in the air. The moment the sword begins to come down at Dirk press the :cross: button to deflect it. Immediately after that an enchanted purple mace goes up into the air. The moment is begins to come down press the :cross: button to deflect it. Next an anvil becomes enchanted. Depending on whether or not the scene is normal or reversed you'll want to press either :left: or :right: to get out of its way when it speeds at you. Then an enchanted spear flies off the rack. Right after it does press the :cross: to deflect it. Finally, Dirk hops up to the fire pit to light his sword. Once the Ogre briefly comes to life and Dirk looks at him press the :cross: to deflect the Ogres hammer. The scene ends right after this.

Huge Coral Snakes:

In this foggy/misty scene Dirk ends up in a room and immediately gets attacked by oversized coral snakes. Press :cross: the moment the first snake drops from the ceiling to the right. Press :cross: again after the next snake drops down from the ceiling to Dirk's left. Press :cross: to swat at the 3rd snake but immediately press :right: to grab the skull. Doing so will cause another rope to drop in which Dirk automatically grabs it and pulls himself to safety.

Lightning/Fire:

In this particular room a wooden bench falls down from a hole in the ceiling blocking the way out. Lightning then shoots down and catches the ground on fire. Press :right: to hop out of the way. Then press :left: to hop away from the flames. Then press  to hop away again. Then press :left: to move the bench away so you can escape the room.

Fortune Tellers:

This scene happens quickly. Dirk enters this circular room and immediately the crystal ball in the center grabs Dirk's equipment and begins to electrify the floor. When the sequence happens press :right: to begin avoiding the electrified flooring. Then immediately press  then :right: so Dirk hops onto the throne. The stone chair will turn moving Dirk into another room. Press :right: to hop off the chair before you get electrocuted. He'll automatically leave the room to safety afterwards.

Falling Stones/Earthquake:

In this small room, the ground starts disappearing when the scene begins. Press :right: and then press :right: again when the door to the right lights up. Dirk will exit the hazardous room just before the pile of stones crushes him.

Multi-colored Marbles:

In this colorful room Dirk gets chased by a huge black ball. You must press  right as each colored ball rolls passed you. Repeat this until you get to the purple ball. After the purple ball crushes against the black ball immediately press  to jump over the hole in the ground. Otherwise you'll fall to your death.

Witch's Brew:

In this scene Dirk finds himself in a room with a black cauldron and a few assorted glass jars. Press  to jump over the goo substance on the floor. Dirk gets attacked while staring at a bottle. Press :cross: to dispatch the beat. Press  to hop away from more goo on the floor. Press the :cross: button to dispatch the beast that emerges from the cauldron then immediately press :right: to exit the room.

Giddy Goons:

Giddy Goons are those goofy-looking small purple creatures with knives. In this scene Dirk emerges from a trapdoor in the floor. A wall to his left turns into a doorway in which a few of these Goon's appear. The first order of business is to press the :cross: button to kill them. Then press :right: to begin moving up the stairs. Press :cross: the moment you see more Goon's start to descend the stairs in front of you. Press  right after Dirk swings at them.

Disappearing Wooden Walkway:

In this scene the wooden walkway Dirk is on begins to disintegrate. Press  and then  again to move to safety. Press :cross: as the bats start swarming you then immediately press :right: to jump off the disappearing walkway onto another broken bridge. Immediately press :right: to grab a rope that you otherwise can't see until you press the :right: for a second time. Dirk will automatically pull himself up to safety and leave.

Black Knight Electrified Floor:

In this scene you see Daphne once again beging carried through a door on the other side of the light blue/dark blue checkered floor. A Black knight appears and begins sending electrified panels on the floor your way. Now this scene can happen normally or reversed so be mindful of the movements in this case.

Let's assume though that his first floor attack comes from the right side of the room. Press :left: to avoid it. Dirk will hop over in which case you'll press :right: to avoid that section of electrified tiles. Next press  to hop over the other sizzled tiles. After a split-second pause press :right: then :left: then :right: then :left:. Once Dirk hops in front of the knight press :cross: to dispatch it.

It may take a few attempts to get the timing right in this particular scene. Don't get frustrated too much with it. You'll get it down in time.

Tar Pits/Geysers:

In this sequence Dirk finds himself outside and in some sort of tar pit/geyser area. The moment you see the fat creatures somehow tied together AND the geyser in front of you gushes up press the :cross:. You must wait for Dirk's sword to land back in his hand and in his sheath at which time you must immediately press  and then  again. The next scene comes quickly. Press  then  again. The next scene press  to hop over the geyser pool then press  again to jump to the safe area on the other side. Then press  yet again to jump across another geyser pool and into a safe tunnel.

Note: in Hard mode. The area just before jumping into the tunnel will require you to press  twice rather than once in Easy mode.

The Dragon's Lair Final Boss Fight:

When Dirk first enters the Dragon's Lair he immediately takes notice of the beautiful Daphne being held in a large crystal ball. After he's done oogling over her you must immediately press :left: to keep the stack of jeweled plates from falling over. The scene then shifts to a sleeping Dragon and then Daphne realizes you're there. Dirk stumbles around but ends up sliding down the hill of gold. Right as Dirk ends up in sight of the sleeping Dragon you must press :left: in order to avoid being toasted by him.

The Dragon wakes up and looks around trying to find out what's making all the ruckus and eventually lays back down to try and sleep again. When the scene shifts to Dirk again press :left: to catch the falling stack of jeweled plates. Daphne then gives Dirk a sensual distress call and explains that he will need the key around the Dragons neck to unlock her imprisonment. She then says to vanquish the beast Dirk will need to get his hands on the magical sword.

The next scene shows the Dragon fully awake and looking for Dirk. Press :left: as the Dragon is trying to squish the pillar made out of a gem.

When Dirk tries to hide behind another red-ish pillar press :left: again to avoid being smashed by the Dragon's tail. In the next scene Dirk is running forward. Press :right: right as the pillar on the right lights up. The scene then shows the Dragon lunging in the air. Dirk runs by from right to left at which time to see the magic sword. Immediately press  to grab it then press :cross: when you see Dirk double-fist the sword. Right after you see Daphne clap her hands press  to avoid the Dragon's tail then press :cross: to have Dirk instill the final blow.

Note: On Hard mode the sequences add a few movements right after the scene where Daphne asks Dirk to save her and explains how to kill the Dragon.

Right after the scene with Daphne where she explains how to kill the beast and free her you'll need to press  when it shows the Dragon pouncing around looking for him, whereas before you didn't have to do that. Then at the blue gem pillar press :left: to escape being crushed by the Dragon's hands. Next on the red-ish pillar be sure and be timely with pressing :left: to avoid the tail smash and fire breath.

Once the scene shifts towards Daphne's reaction immediately press  when the scene begins where Dirk is running forward. Then press :right: towards the pillar that lights up.

The Dragon lunges in the air in the next scene. Dirk runs by from right to left and see the magical sword. Press  to grab the sword. Then press :cross: twice when it shows him double-fisting the sword to deflect the Dragon's fire. After Daphne claps press  then immediately press :cross: twice to ensure you get 2 sword actions accounted for. This will end the final boss fight.

I had to die once to get Singe Attack. It did not award it to me when I had full lives.

Here is how you get Lair King:

1. You MUST play on Arcade Easy mode with five lives. Hard mode is missing a single point-awarding scene (the first whirlpool), and Home mode does not award you the 49-point starting bonus for the first scene. Three lives is not enough to get max points. This is actually true to the original arcade, and I am extremely surprised at the accuracy in this version.

2. On the falling elevator scenes, you must jump on the LAST POSSIBLE bridge to get maximum points. Keep in mind that two of the four scenes have NINE possible jumping locations (bridges). (Three of the four scenes start you facing left, and one of those continues after the first three bridges. The scene that starts you facing right ALWAYS has nine bridges.)

3. When you get to Singe's Lair, play your first four lives missing the last possible input, which is the Sword button after pressing up to dodge Singe's tail. On your last life, complete the game, and you should have the max score if you did everything right.

I have no idea how to get the hidden trophy.

Thanks for the input. I'll try your method and see if I can confirm the results. If so I'll add it to my Guide.

Thanks a lot! :)

Btw, that Hidden trophy is a real mystery... :(

[EDIT] I got ripped off somehow on the trophy. I followed your method exactly and it didn't even save my high score at the end of the game. Oh well, gotta keep trying...

Nice guide. One thing - I didn't notice any difference in the final boss sequence on easy (home mode) and hard (arcade mode). It might be my lack of perception. What I did notice was that you could miss a move or two, and still get through unscathed. For example, I missed a sword swing, but the game forgave me on easy mode.

Does anyone know what the hidden trophy is? Maybe it's seeing all of the death sequences in a single playthrough? Reproducing the "watch" video (in case people don't know, there are actually multiple ways to complete levels)? I don't think I've ever seen a mystery trophy last for this long.

It's subtle but there really is 2 extra moves required in Hard mode. I learned the hard way after I spent multiple attempts figuring out why I was getting killed repeatedly during the boss fight.

As for the hidden trophy, you're right. I've scoured the web trying to find information on it but to no avail. There's suprisingly very little forum talk going on about the game.

[EDIT] I'm ending up with a final score of 425,481. I'm not sure what I'm missing here. No deaths whatsoever except the forced kills during the Dragon fight for more points. I've taken the 3rd exit section during each falling platform sequence and all the way to the 9th exit section during the extended reverse scene.

Any ideas?

The best way to see all the death sequences would be in Hard in Home Mode since the same level allways repeats when you die...good luck to anyone who trys this...

There are two extended falling platform sequences, one normal, one in reverse. The score awarded for skipping the 3rd and 6th stop is exactly the # you need added to your score to max it out. Check out the Dragon's Lair Project website. They have a complete score chart for every move in the game!

I missed the Lair King required score by only a small handful of points. I did a perfect run on Easy/Home mode just to see what would happen. Part of the point surge was the 4 falling platform sequences. This is what the game lets you do.

  • 1st Platform Scene: Hop off the platform at the 3rd exit section
  • 2nd Platform Scene: Hop off the platform at the 9th exit section
  • 3rd Platform Scene: Hop off the platform at the 3rd exit section
  • 4th Platform Scene: Hop off the platform at the 9th exit section

Everything else during the playthrough was done perfectly (or so I thought). I got to the Dragon with 5 lives and killed myself 4 times just before inputting the final sword attack. But after it was all said and done I was short (my total points was 427,420).

Now here's the problem. The Platform Scenes aren't the same in Arcade Mode. So far as I know only the 3rd Platform sequence allows you to drop to the 9th ledge. The 1st, 2nd and 4th scenes do not. How are you guys making up the difference in points during Arcade Mode?

Thanks for that info. Which platform scene is extended besides the 3rd in Arcade mode?

Ok I have no idea what this hidden trophy could be. I died every way even in the reverse rooms and I didn't get a trophy. Maybe I missed one by mistake. If anyone else tries and it unlocks I'll try again. I also let the game over timer run out to see if that was what it is but that didn't work either. I can't think of anything else to do. Does anyone have any other ideas?

Here's a score chart for easy on arcade mode Yoshi_Girl. http://www.dragons-lair-project.com/games/related/score/dl/easy.asp

The order that the 9-platform scene appears is random. If the first elevator scene appears early (as in the first 5-6 scenes), it is probably the 3-platform one, and the second elevator scene will have 9 floors. If the first elevator scene appears later, then that will probably have 9 floors and the other two left-facing ones 3 floors. Hope that helps.

Yeah, I saved my game prior to each platform scene just in case it turned out not to be an extended sequence. I finally got the Lair King trophy after many attempts. Now I'm going to try for the Singe Attack trophy then I guess I'll hop in the same boat as everyone else trying to unravel this mysterious Hidden Trophy.

[EDIT] Btw, we're all at 95% now with the final Hidden trophy being the last one. That 5% makes it a Silver trophy?

I think it's a bronze Astro Tripper has eight trophies and it has two gold, three silver and three bronze.

I just tried a playthrough with the arcade monitor screen, three lives and no move guide. I thought maybe they wanted us to playthrough the game with the original monitor screen but nope I guess I'll try a different combination.

I've tried so many different variations too including no beep sounds and no move guides. It's starting to get frustrating. What gets me is no one seems to know on other websites too, so we're not the only perplexed Dragon Slayers.

I just can't get Lair King... I always end up 49 points short, even though I get off at the 9th stop on the two 9 level falling scenes, and die 4 times at the last move in the Dragon's Lair, before completing the scene on my final life. I always end up with 427,420. Entering the Dragon's Lair, I have 395,674, so the first move I make in that scene I have 397,000 so I know I won't get the perfect score. I've tried Arcade Mode with 5 lives, move guide, no move guide, full screen, arcade monitor. I think i've tried home version too. I've tried saving, never saving, etc.

Help!

I came up with 427,420 points too but that was doing everything perfectly in Home mode on Easy. The extra 49 points are obviously awarded in Arcade mode. But it looks like you're doing the falling platform scenes correctly, which constitutes the bulk of the extra points, so now we just have to figure out where you're getting jipped.

The first thing that comes to mind is due to the randomness of the scenes each time you play a new game it might be possible you didn't get a higher point scene to play? I'm not sure that's even possible when thinking about it but who knows.

Another thing I can think of is to try again only this time save your game before each falling platform scene and try for the 2 random 9 section drops. Reload your game if you don't get an extended scene and work forward from there until you get to the next falling platform scene. Rinse and repeat.

At the Dragon fight just make absolute sure you do EVERY move leading up to the  (Dirk jumps away from the Dragon's tail swipe) but do NOT press the final :cross: (which is the scene where Dirk throws the magical sword at the Dragon).

Hopefully a solution presents itself for you. :)

I too ended up with 427,420...what i did was make sure i saved after the cut scenes were over because they are 49 points...just in case i loaded the game and something messed up...I played Arcade Mode 5 Lives Easy...

And the start of the dragons layer you should have 288,543...so hopefully it wil save you some time and start over if you have 288,494...P.S....check your score everytime you save...if your missing points when you reload you know you missed a cutscene.

Thanks for the guide Yoshi. Making a video guide like we were talking about before. Will post here as soon as I'm done.

Edit: Rawr Blip.tv doesn't work here. Guess I'll have to upload to my YT account when I'm done >.<

Sweet, thanks for that. Can you tell me what the videos will cover exactly? (ie; Easy mode, Hard mode, Arcade mode, Home mode, etc.) And YouTube video(s) works great.

Much appreciated. :)
