Introduction:

After many infamous and well-documented delays, the first piece of DLC for Skyrim on the PS3 is finally here! Titled Dragonborn, this substantial addition sees the player travel to the island of Solstheim in Morrowind to investigate the Cult of Miraak, who believe their eponymous leader, the first Dragonborn, is about to return to Tamriel.

As well as the main quest, Dragonborn comes packed with additional content such as new sidequests, locations, shouts and materials to find on Solstheim. All of these have a trophy related to them, meaning that getting 100% will involve you sampling everything the DLC has to offer.

Note on missable trophy: There is one missable trophy in this DLC, which is Stalhrim Crafter. During “The Fate of the Skaal” quest, you will learn the first word of the “Bend Will” shout. Once you have done this and are told to use it on the Wind Stone, make a new save. This is because when you use the Bend Will on the Stone, an enemy called a Lurker will attack you and the Skaal villagers around the stone. You must ensure that Fanari Strong-Voice, Deor Woodcutter and Baldor Iron-Shaper all survive. In most cases, you will be fine as the Lurker doesn’t take long to kill; but after you kill it, look around the villagers to make sure those three are there and talk to you. If one has died, reload the save you made a few seconds earlier and do it again. I didn’t realise until I’d finished everything else in the DLC that Fanari had died, leaving me unable to start “A New Source of Stalhrim”. I hadn’t hard-saved either, meaning I had to load a pre-Dragonborn save and do the first part of the DLC again. See the description of Stalhrim Crafter for more details.

Note on Perks: Once you complete “A New Source of Stalhrim”, you must have the ability to smith Ebony to be able to create weapons or armour out of Stalhrim. The Ebony perk can be unlocked in the smithing skill tree once you hit level 80 in smithing. In rare cases, your character may be at overall max level (81) and never unlocked the ability to smith Ebony, and thus have no perks left to assign to it. However, do not worry, as Dragonborn introduces the ability to re-spec your perks once you complete the main quest. Simply read the Black Book entitled “Waking Dreams” and you will be able to spend one dragon soul to remove all perks from one skill tree, allowing you to reassign them wherever you like. Place as many perks as necessary in Smithing to unlock Ebony and then craft a Stalhrim item to unlock the trophy. You can put the perks back in their original place once you have done this if you so wish.

Walkthrough:

Step 1 - Complete the main quest

To initiate the Dragonborn DLC, you must first have at least started "The Horn Of Jurgen Windcaller" in the Skyrim main questline and been deemed "Dragonborn" by the Greybeards (thanks to erdvilla for confirming). Then, enter any of the 7 major cities in Skyrim. You will be attacked by Miraak Cultists. Kill them and loot their bodies to find a note which will lead you to a small harbour next to Windhelm. Take the boat that the quest marker indicates, and you will travel to Solstheim.

Once in Solstheim you will be directed where to go. There are 7 quests in total for the main story in the DLC, which are:

  • Dragonborn
  • The Temple of Miraak
  • The Fate of the Skaal
  • Cleansing the Stones
  • The Path of Knowledge
  • The Gardener of Men
  • The Summit of Apocrypha

In this step I highly recommend travelling everywhere on foot instead of fast-travelling, discovering as many locations as you can as you go. This way, by the time you complete the main quest you should have worked a considerable way towards discovering 30 locations for Solstheim Explorer. Completing the main quest will earn you the following four trophies:

(B)

Outlander

(B)

The Temple of Miraak

(B)

The Path of Knowledge

(S)

At the Summit of Apocrypha

Step 2 - Miscellaneous trophies

Now that the main quest is finished, it’s time to mop up the other six trophies. Start by completing the various sidequests in Solstheim related to the trophies, such as earning a house in Raven Rock, crafting an item out of Stalhrim and finding 5 Black Books. Completing these sidequests will naturally earn you all 3 words of the “Dragon Aspect” shout. If you are travelling on foot, you should also have discovered 30 locations in Solstheim by now. The last trophy you will likely earn is Dragonrider, which requires you to tame and ride 5 dragons. See the trophy descriptions for more details. Completing this step will earn you the following trophies and your 100% for this DLC:

(S)

Stalhrim Crafter

(S)

Dragon Aspect

(B)

Solstheim Explorer

(B)

Hidden Knowledge

(B)

Raven Rock Owner

(B)

Dragonrider

Trophy Guide

67.jpg  Outlander (B)

Arrive on Solstheim

This trophy is story related and cannot be missed. This trophy will be the first one you unlock in the DLC, upon completion of the first quest titled “Dragonborn”.

[spoiler=outlander]To initiate it, first make sure that you have at least started "The Horn of Jurgen Windcaller" in the main game, and then enter any of the 7 major cities in Skyrim. You will be attacked by members of the Cult of Miraak. Kill them and loot their bodies to find a note, which will lead you to a boat in Windhelm. Talk to the captain, Gjalund Salt-Sage, and persuade him to take you to Solstheim. Once you arrive, this trophy will unlock.

68.jpg  The Temple of Miraak (B)

Complete "The Temple of Miraak"

This trophy is story related and cannot be missed. You will earn this upon completion of the quest entitled “The Temple of Miraak”.

Spoiler

Travel to the Temple of Miraak and talk to Frea. Follow her inside and work your way through the Temple defeating enemies until you reach the Temple Sanctum. Eventually in here you will find a Word Wall where you can learn the first Word of the “Dragon Aspect” Shout. Kill the Gatekeeper who subsequently attacks you and loot his body for the Temple Key. Work your way through the various secret passages in the next area until you eventually come to the Black Book: “Waking Dreams” on a pedestal. Read it to activate a cutscene, at the end of which you will complete the quest and earn this trophy.

69.jpg  The Path of Knowledge (B)

Complete "The Path of Knowledge"

This trophy is story related and cannot be missed. Complete “The Path of Knowledge” quest to unlock this trophy.

[spoiler=knowledge]First you must head to Tel Mithryn and ask Neloth about the Black Books. He will then tell you to head to Nchardak to find another, and will accompany you. Once there, fight your way into the entrance. Inside the ruins, you will have to solve various puzzles with Dwarven cubes that you pick up along the way. Eventually you will collect enough cubes to power the four steam generators in the Great Chamber. Once this is done, head back up the elevator to the Reading Room and press the blue button. The four generators will produce a beam of light which will open the casing in which the Black Book: “Epistolary Acumen” is enclosed, allowing you to read it and complete this quest.

70.jpg  At the Summit of Apocrypha (S)

Complete "The Summit of Apocrypha"

This trophy is story related and cannot be missed. You will earn this trophy upon completion of the main quest.

Spoiler

To get to Apocrypha, read the Black Book: “Waking Dreams”. Work your way through to Chapter VI by completing the puzzle with the four books and once there, use the Word Wall to learn the final Word of the “Dragon Aspect” Shout. Once you do this, Miraak’s dragon, Sahrotaar, will come and attack you. Use a fully charged “Bend Will” Shout to tame him and then approach him and mount him. Complete the small dragon-riding tutorial and eventually you will land on the summit. After a short conversation, you will have to fight Miraak. You must deplete his health bar 4 times, as the first 3 times he will kill a dragon and absorb its soul to replenish his health. Eventually he will be defeated, and after the cutscene you will be rewarded with this trophy.

*Glitch Warning*: Make sure to make a save before you use "Bend Will" on the dragon. This is because there have been a couple of issues reported with the last boss:

1. When you deplete the boss' health bar, he will walk to the middle of the circle and be in an ethereal state. He will then kill a nearby dragon and absorb its soul to replenish his health. Sometimes, he will kill the dragon and simply not absorb the soul, leaving him standing in the middle and unable to be hit due to his ghost form. This happened to me, and I think the reason was that I looted the dragon before the boss had absorbed the soul. To avoid this, I would advise not touching any of the dragons until the boss fight is over.

2. When the boss has around 1/10th of his fourth and final health bar left, the fight will be over and a cutscene will play. If you are too overpowered, you may kill him outright, causing the boss to be dead unable to be interacted with due to him being labelled "busy". To avoid this, raise the difficulty or simply use a less-powerful weapon that won't take off too much of his health at once. Thanks to luckyegg for confirming this glitch.

71.jpg  Dragon Aspect (S)

Learn all 3 words of Dragon Aspect

Dragon Aspect is a new Shout available in Dragonborn, giving you both an outer skin of dragon armour and a huge increase in offensive power. However, this Shout can only be used once a day (like a Power) and once used still requires the recharge time before another Shout can be used.

The first two words of the Shout are unmissable, as you get them in the main quest. The first Word Wall is located in the Temple of Miraak Sanctum in “The Temple of Miraak” and has to be obtained to advance in that quest. Similarly, the second Word Wall is located in Chapter VI of the Black Book: “Waking Dreams” section of Apocrypha during the quest "The Summit of Apocrypha". You must again activate this wall to continue.

The third word is optional, but is fairly easy to obtain. Enter Raven Rock Mine (located next to the village) and talk to Crescius Caerellius to begin “The Final Descent”. Follow the quest marker through the mine, defeating the various types of Draugr. Eventually you will reach the body of Gratian Caerellius. Take his journal from his corpse and read it, before taking the unique Bloodskal Blade lying next to him. Use this to open the door in front of you. Look at the red lines on the arch around the door, and aim a power attack with the Bloodskal Blade at and in the same direction as the lines on the arch. Do this 6 times for the different sections of the arch and once more for the main door, and go through. You will come to a room where you must defeat the Dragon Priest Zahkriisos. Do so, and approach the Word Wall behind him to learn the final word of this Shout and earn this trophy.

72.jpg  Hidden Knowledge (B)

Learn the secrets of 5 Black Books

There are 7 Black Books in Solstheim, but only 5 are required for this trophy. Two of these are unmissable during the main quest and one is unmissable if you have already earned the Dragon Aspect trophy. The others are relatively easy to find, as talking to Neloth after “The Path of Knowledge” will start a quest called “Lost Knowledge”, which will reveal the location of a new Black Book every time you find one (you don’t have to find Black Books this way; simply going to the location without talking to Neloth will still reward you with a Book). The following is a list of all 7 Black Books and where you can find them:

  • Waking Dreams - Unmissable. Obtained during the main quest “The Temple of Miraak”.
  • Epistolary Acumen - Unmissable. Obtained during the main quest “The Path of Knowledge”.
  • The Winds of Change - Obtained at the end of the sidequest “The Final Descent”. After you obtain the third word of Dragon Aspect, you must read this Black Book to escape from Bloodskal Barrow.
  • The Hidden Twilight - Found in Neloth’s “house” in Tel Mithryn. After completing “The Path of Knowledge”, complete a couple of miscellaneous quests for Neloth and he will unlock the door next to the Staff Enchanter. The Black Book is behind the door.
  • Filament and Filigree - In Kolbjorn Barrow, at the end of the substantial sidequest “Unearthed”.
  • The Sallow Regent - In White Ridge Barrow. Reach the end of the dungeon and defeat Dukaan the Dragon Priest. This Book will be here along with a Word Wall for the new “Cyclone” Shout.
  • Untold Legends - In Benkongerike. At the end of the dungeon along with another Word Wall for “Cyclone”.

In addition to this, simply reading the Book and exiting back into Solstheim is not sufficient. You must complete each Book’s sidequest in Apocrypha and obtain the Hidden Knowledge at the end of each Book.

73.jpg  Stalhrim Crafter (S)

Craft an item out of Stalhrim

[MISSABLE] This trophy is not as simple as it appears. There are a number of steps required to earn it:

1. Obtain the Ancient Nordic Pickaxe.

Talk to Glover Mallory, the blacksmith in Raven Rock. He will tell you to retrieve his Ancient Nordic Pickaxe, which is now in the possession of Crescius Caerellius. Find Caerellius (who will either be in the entrance to Raven Rock Mine or his house depending on whether you’ve completed “The Final Descent” or not) and convince him to return the pickaxe. Return to Mallory, who will allow you to keep the pickaxe.

2. Complete “The Fate of the Skaal” and ensure no villagers die.

This step is the most important of them all, as getting it wrong can lead to you being locked out of this trophy. Make sure you make a hard save once you learn the first word of the “Bend Will” Shout in the main quest. Then read the “Note on missable trophy” paragraph in this guide’s walkthrough. I will repeat again: make sure that Fanari Strong-Voice, Deor Woodcutter and Baldor Iron-Shaper all survive the fight with the Lurker when you cleanse the Wind Stone. If not, re-load your hard save and do it again. If you have made sure all three characters have survived, continue on to the next step.

3. “A New Source of Stalhrim”.

After Step 2, wait a couple of days and then travel to Skaal Village. Fanari Strong-Voice and Deor Woodcutter will be having an urgent conversation in the centre of the village, regarding the disappearance of Baldor Iron-Shaper. (Now you know why they had to survive - any of these characters dying beforehand would obviously not trigger this conversation). Speak to Deor to initiate the “A New Source of Stalhrim” quest.

To complete this quest, you must first follow Deor’s advice and travel to the Abandoned Lodge, north-east of Raven Rock. Kill the four Thalmor guards there and loot the Lodge Key from one of them. Go inside and downstairs, where you will find Baldor. He will tell you that you need to go to Northshore Landing to retrieve a map that was stolen from him by the Thalmor. Go to Northshore Landing and approach Ancarion, the leader of the Thalmor operation. You then have the option to persuade/intimidate him into giving you the map, killing him or pickpocketing it. Whichever you choose, head back to Skaal Village once you have the map and talk to Baldor to complete the quest.

4. Obtain Stalhrim.

The map that you retrieved in the previous quest will show a location in the north-west of Solstheim on your map called “Stalhrim Source”. Go there and mine some Stalhrim with your Ancient Nordic Pickaxe (the only pickaxe which will allow you to mine Stalhrim, hence the need to obtain it). Once you have a few pieces of Stalhrim, move to Step 5.

5. Craft a Stalhrim item.

Before you can make a Stalhrim item, you will need to have a smithing level of 80 and the perk which allows you to smith Ebony. If you have this, go to any forge (it doesn’t have to be Skaal Village) and craft any item of weaponry or armour in the “Stalhrim” tab, and you will finally unlock this trophy!

If you would rather use a video guide to help you with this trophy, then Guillermo has provided an excellent video which encompasses all of the above:

74.jpg  Dragonrider (B)

Tame and ride 5 dragons

To tame and ride a dragon, you will first need all 3 words of the “Bend Will” Shout, which is unmissable if you’ve finished the main quest of the DLC. Then, when you encounter a dragon, hold down :r2: for a few seconds to use the full power of the Shout. The dragon will land near you and bow it’s head, allowing you to climb onto its neck with :cross:. When riding the dragon, you cannot actually control its flight, but you can select targets for it to attack and press :cross: to land whenever you like.

You have to do this once at the end of “The Summit of Apocrypha” during the final quest of the main story, so once that is completed you only need to do this four times. This trophy can also be earned in Skyrim and not just Solstheim, and it is in fact easier to do so. Instead of waiting around for a random dragon attack, go to your world map in Skyrim and fast travel to any of the Dragon Lairs*. There should be a dragon here, so use “Bend Will” to tame it and ride it. Immediately land again and fast travel to another Dragon Lair (the dragon you just rode will be docile, so won’t disable fast travel) and repeat the process until this trophy is unlocked. Mounting and dismounting from the same dragon 5 times will not work, as this needs to be done to 5 unique dragons.

It seems that this trophy is a little bit troublesome with regards to how many dragons you need to ride to unlock it. I myself had to ride 6 dragons, whilst other users have reported as many as 8. The problem seems to be that when you travel to another Dragon Lair after taming a dragon, the dragon that you encounter at the next Lair will be counted by the game as the same dragon you just rode, even though the new one is hostile and even a different type of dragon. To avoid this, once you step off the dragon after riding it, kill it and then fast travel. That way, once you reach the next Lair, the dragon you find will be considered a "new" one.

*Dragon lairs are marked by this icon on your map: 90x55x2-Dragonlairicon.png

75.jpg  Raven Rock Owner (B)

Own a house in Raven Rock

To own a house in Raven Rock, you will need to complete three sidequests, after which you will be awarded the house for free.

The first sidequest you must complete is “The Final Descent”. See Dragon Aspect for more details on that mission.

Secondly (or before “The Final Descent” if you like, the order doesn’t matter), you must complete “March of the Dead”. To start this quest, travel to Old Attius Farm, which is just outside the south gate of Raven Rock. Once there, defend Captain Veleth by killing all the Ash Spawn attacking him. Talk to him and then search the ash piles around you until you come across a note called “Declaration of War”. Talk to Captain Veleth again, who will send you off to Fort Frostmoth (the area on the Solstheim Map with five white towers which you can see on the south coast) to kill someone. Go there and do so, and return to Captain Veleth in Raven Rock to receive your reward.

Completing these two quests will unlock the third and final quest required for this trophy, “Served Cold”. Go to Raven Rock and Captain Veleth will automatically approach you and tell you to speak to Adril Arano. Arano will in turn send you to speak to the barman Geldis Sadri at the Retching Netch in Raven Rock. Do so and he will tell you to go to the Ulen Ancestral Tomb (also in Raven Rock) and wait for someone. Enter the tomb and press :select: and :cross: to wait for an hour. Someone will enter the tomb, and after talking to them you must return to Arano. He will then send you to Severin Manor (just north of Raven Rock, near the Earth Stone) to find evidence. Kill the people inside and loot their bodies for a safe key. Go to the master bedroom at the back and open the safe to obtain a letter entitled “The Ulen Matter”. Go back to Arano again and he will send you to Ashfallow Citadel. Work your way through and kill the guy at the end before returning one final time to Arano. He will tell you that Councillor Morvayn wishes to speak to you, so find him and talk to him to receive the key to the Severin Manor and this trophy.

76.jpg  Solstheim Explorer (B)

Discover 30 locations on the island of Solstheim

The island of Solstheim has over 70 unique locations to discover, so 30 really isn’t that much. If you travel on foot instead of fast travelling and take slight detours to discover new places, you should have around 30 by the time you complete the main quest. If not, you will definitely have this by the time you’ve completed the various trophy-related sidequests.

As always, an undiscovered location will appear in black on your map, whereas a discovered one will be in white. When you discover a location, a large message will appear on your screen saying “*Name of location* discovered” and a chime will play.

Just thought that I would add a little note. I had to tame and ride 7 dragons for "Dragonrider" to unlock (not counting the one from the final quest). Not too big of a deal but I figured I should mention it.

So if this happens to anybody else don't worry and just hop on a few more and it should pop. I did get on and off a few of them pretty quickly so maybe that had something to do with it.

nice guide

so if i understand correctly i can respec infinity times right?

Yeah, just read "Waking Dreams" and you'll be taken straight to the re-spec room. As long as you have a spare dragon soul, you can re-spec ad infinitum.

I had to ride six dragons in total for mine (including the main quest one). I think what it is is that if you fast travel to another Dragon Lair, the dragon that's there is sometimes counted by the game as the one you've just rode. I'll update the guide, thanks.

Thanks, DLC complete, not too bad for 10 hours work. Glad it was half price.

It's an absolute bargain for half price, but in my opinion it would be worth the full price. There's a lot of content here; the main quest and what's required for trophies is only half of what's available. It's a shame you can't properly ride dragons though :(

Well haven't started yet really :p Just needed to finish the last BO2 multiplayer trophies first. But it's the first thing I'm gonna do tommorrow ;)

Oh God, don't get me started. I'm so poor online it'll take me 5 times as long to get those. Think I'll wait for a double XP weekend :p Then got to do the zombies stuff too and the last few of those nightmare challenges in SP :

Very good stuff, Darth_Krid. Will be following this guide once all the DLC is released and I have a chance to get back to Skyrim (can't wait).

Thanks mate :) If I were you I'd buy it now though (even if you don't play it) so you can get the 50% discount.

Uhm sorry, but how do you start the DLC?? I took a boat from Windhelm, but now that I'm there, there is no quests?

Once you're in Solstheim, talk to people in Raven Rock or go to the nearby Earth Stone and talk to some people round there. Your quest marker will move to the Temple of Miraak soon enough :)

You can't complete the Book until the end of the main quest. If you want, like you've done, you can work your way to the Word Wall in "Waking Dreams" and learn Dragon Aspect, but you can go no further. Without spoiling anything, once you've reached the last quest, you'll need to go back to the Word Wall and something will happen there.

If you've already worked your way through the Book to the Wall (like you've done), you won't have to do it again. When you read the Book you'll be taken straight to the Wall.

Thanks. Found out of it now. But I'm at the "The fate of the skaal" quest now. Once I get to the stone, it says I must use this new shout on it. I use it, but nothing happens?

EDIT: Nevermind. I'm just retarded. Used the wrong shout :p
