General Quests Q&A and FAQs

Recommended Posts

This is NOT a Walkthrough Thread. Please refer to the Trophy Guide for that. Most quests in Dragon's Dogma are pretty straightforward with the exception of a few puzzling ones. We, fellow PS3T members, are here to help.

Gran Soren Inn-Keeper:

Asalam, the Gran Soren Inn-Keeper is a potential love partner. Do not romance him. If you do, he will end up at your home in Cassardis during the post game events. This results in you being locked out of changing vocations, and managing inventory (mostly withdrawing items) unless you travel to Cassardis each time. You can still rest in Gran Soren by using the Refuge Area near the Western Exit though.

If somebody other than him ends up being your romance partner, he will move shop to the Pawn Guild in Gran Soren.

Thick as Thieves:

This is one of the most confusing quests in the game. It seems that sometimes the female bandits at the Ruins of Heavenspeak Castle will attack you regardless of your gender. There are two semi-confirmed solutions.

1) Discard or store the Maul's Badge of Amity at the Inn or any Rest Camp. Toss away any pawns you brought along from the cliff. If you plan on reviving them later, remember that a Chimera spawns nearby at the bottom of the cliff. If you're not feeling confident, take it out first. Go solo into the Castle; if you are have a male avatar, dress yourself up in a Set of Lady's Garb which is sold by the Black Cat. Nobody should demonstrate any hostility towards you now.

2) Still hostile? Revive your pawns, find Ophis (or any bandit with a green or red marker), grab her with the R2 button, and drag her down with you to a more docile location. Do not kill her though. Hide from her until she gives up. Confront her and spam the Circle button. She should then give you the quest.

Witch's Brew:

This quest requires you to take a Gransys Herb to Selene, who will, in turn, forge it into an Herb Ale. Selene can also forge other selected Herbs into curatives (Distilled Herb Ale, Fragrant Herb Ale, Perfect Herb Ale, Finest Herb Ale, Secret Herb Ale), but remember that only a regular Herb Ale, made from a Gransys Herb, can be turned in to the Arsmith to complete the quest. Also, keep in mind not to accidentally use it like me.

A Troublesome Tome:

The quest marker in this particular quest is really confusing. Worry not because we have the answer. Salomet's Grimoire, the crucial tome required to complete this quest is located in the Ruins of Aernst Castle which is to the west of Witchwood, and the Encampment. You are better off not going to the marked area that is located in the Northern part of the map.

A detailed location is shown in the following video:

Sisters in Peril:

In this quest, you are asked to kill two Ogres found across all of Gransys. Ogres are hard to find; they are not as copious in numbers as their monstrous brethren, Cyclops. If you have already killed the three sheltering in the Ancient Quarry, you may have a tough time finding them. But, this can and will change when night falls. Visit the area around the Abbey just to the north of the Quarry, and Ogres will spawn in pairs. Having a female party member will excite the Ogres, so either change party members or be prepared for the onslaught.

Escort Duty:

"Successful" completion of this quest gives you a Gold Idol; so be doubly sure not to screw up. Save before talking to Fournival to trigger the quest. One of the confirmed pre-requisite of this quest is Land of Opportunity. Another speculated pre-requisite is Chasing Shadows. It helps to carry one Flask of Water, sold at Aestella's Sundries, before starting the quest.

Talk to Fournival and then talk to his daughter, Symone, who is right beside him. You will need to escort the brat across town. Stay close to her or she will get annoyed. When she trips on the ground, DO NOT PICK HER UP. You will be thrown to jail, and the quest will instantly fail. When she asks you to play a game of hide-and-seek, FIND HER QUICKLY. She will either hide at the Inn or the Alehouse. Too much delay, and you will end up getting a Golden Egg or worse, an Empty Flask as a reward. After finding her, you will get to escort her some more. When she asks for water, give her the Flask of Water or buy one quickly from Aestella. Finally, she will ask you to race with her. Let her win. Back to the Fournival Mansion, talk to her again, and receive the Gold Idol. If you get something else, you screwed up somewhere. Go to Pause menu, select Save, select Quit without Saving, and then load the game.

You turn the ale in to the guy outside the ale house in Gran Soren. Everything off that board seems to go to that guy.

Side note, don't sell/drop the 50x skulls you get for a reward for killing 36 skeletons. There is a quest later that requires you to find 66 skulls. Unfortunately the 50 skulls is an instant reward and it over-encumbered me so I dumped them.

So I bought that metamorphis thing and a couple hair dyes from the Rift Store and they aren't in my inventory. Where do I get started using them?

I think you can use the hair dyes at the barbershop. To use the character edit thing you have to (save &) exit to main menu.

I'm pretty close to completing my Strider class and thinking about changing my vocation, but having only a single save slot and several general design issues with the game, I'm being far less experimental than I normally would be, so I'm wondering if anyone can give me some general information and feedback on the classes...

First, a question: do any skills you've unlocked for one class carry over to any others? I ask because I have a dodge move that I don't really want to give up if there's nothing similar anywhere else and it's not transferable...

So, as I said, I've been playing as a Strider, and I think I'm probably going to go on with that style of play (I was planning on trying a close-range type of class, but the erratic nature of some of the pawns I've hired have sort of put me off of doing that), so I'm wondering if anyone can compare the Strider with the other similar types of classes, which seem to be Assassin, Ranger, and Magic Archer - do they all play more or less similarly? Are their skills similar? Are they actually improvements on the Strider or just a kind of lateral step rather than a progression? etc. etc.

I realize I could just try one out and go back to being a Strider if I want to, but there are some more skills I'd rather buy for the Strider if the other similar classes aren't that much better...

If you're playing a Strider and want to keep that playstyle I suggest going Assassin next.

Assassin is Fighter/Strider so you can switch up between those gear and weapons. You will have to level the vocation pretty high before you unlock the dodge again though.

There are still some differences in abilities though. Assassin's have some abilities that Strider doesn't, and also doesn't have some abilities that Strider does. Assassin doesn't have some of the crowd control moves like Ensnare. It's mostly about damage/killing abilities, fits the name of the vocation I guess.

The only thing that carries over when you change vocations is the Augments. So equip any Augments you want and then switch over. You'll still keep all your abilities you had in the vocation if you ever decide to switch back so it's no hurt in experimenting.

Edit: I think Core Skills carry over as well as Augments. Just changed vocation and still have my Core Skills also. So you will still have your dodge ability as long as your using the daggers, since it's a dagger skill.

I need to find a wakestone not shard, is Foursival a traveling salesman?

That's the rich guy, right? You can usually find him in his house or walking around Gran Soren. Many of the other traveling salesman that stop by the inn in Gran Soren also sell Wakestone shards. Along with other merchants at outposts in the world. They aren't hard to come by, just chopping up the money for them is. Most merchants will sell for 10-20k gold.

@Mitsuru: The advanced and hybrid classes are similar to the primary vocations, but not the same. You will gain but also sacrifice some skills.

If you are playing this game for a while, my only suggestion is to experiment. You will have more than enough Discipline points to do so. Also, Mystic Knight is not similar to Strider in that it forces you to use a shield as a secondary. Assassins and Magick Archers, however, are.

You turn the ale in to the guy outside the ale house in Gran Soren. Everything off that board seems to go to that guy.

Ah, now I remember. I got sidetracked with exploration, got into deep shit, and used up the herb. Many thanks for this.

Anybody know if the escort notice board quests ever come back? I never payed attention to the rewards, and it seems I've missed out on the quest needed for a pretty sweet 2h sword.

I dont think they do. I saw one before and didn't want to do it at the time. Came back later and it was gone... this was yesterday in real time. Many days in game time. Never appeared again.

Does anybody know how to effectively play out the Female Bandit quest in the Ruins of Heavenspeak Fort? I know they don't like male intruders, so I made sure all my party members were female. But when I reached the fort, half of the bandits were hostile, while the other half were docile, not even giving a shit to the fighting going around them.

When I reached a meeting area, there were two people with green markers, but they started attacking as soon as I reached the floor (I was taking the stairs). It's not the room one next to the lever since I was advised not to it.

Strangely enough, one of my female fighters commented (I am sure she was a female), "A fortress of female bandits? Guess I am the odd one out... Maybe I should dress in female clothing, eh?" What is this? Gender confusion? Is that why they attacked us?

It probably was a guy, my pawn said the same thing. I'm in the middle of this quest right now. They always attacked because my main pawn is male, so I threw him off the cliff to die. I was able to talk to the leader after he went back to the rift. I did the same when I went to turn it in, but since he was still in the dying phase they still attacked me, I had to wait until he was fully gone.

If a male wears female clothes in the game, they swap the body model out with a female one. The pawn may have been wearing female armor for some reason, I dunno, just a guess.

Nah, it's a female. It even says so under the Profile section. She is wearing Griffith's White Hawk armor; maybe that is why? Like a woman dressed in man's clothing, wouldn't it be considered the same as being a man because I am pretty sure you can take a male character to the fort in female clothing and not incite hostility.

I may be the dumbest person to ask this but how do I hire my friends Pawns? I have gone to rift stones and tried searching for my mates Pawn with no luck, yet he has got it set to everyone. He has been able to find mine without any problems though.

Go to the Rift (via a riftstone). Then inside the rift, touch the riftstone and select search. One of the choices is to search friends' pawns.

The sharing system isn't perfect. Not everybody's pawn shows up on the "Friend's Pawn" list. I would suggest you to try again later.

I've tried this multiple times with no joy.

I'm guessing that the system could be easily fixed with a patch.

Strangely enough, one of my female fighters commented (I am sure she was a female), "A fortress of female bandits? Guess I am the odd one out... Maybe I should dress in female clothing, eh?" What is this? Gender confusion? Is that why they attacked us?

Nah, this doesn't work. I just tried going there and put the Set of Lady's Garb outfit on my character. This seemed to make them more angry, whereas if you simply go as a male. The only one that will attack you without warrant is the leader, while the rest just show their disdain when you talk to them.

When I went dressed as a female as I approached each one they said something very angry.. and attacked me without me even talking to them yet. And then when I got to the leader she said "What are you then?".

So there doesn't seem to be anyway to fool them. Only choice would be to use that Metamorphosis item and change your character to a female.
