Monster Guide for NooBs

Hey, guys. I just noticed you guys don't have a guide for dealing with the tougher monsters in this classic series. I'm sure there's plenty of 'guides' across the internet, but having played Doom ][ like the Christian Bible back in the 90's, I pretty much know these enemies inside out.

So here goes, ranking from the highest threat down...

Arch Vile

The Arch-Vile is considered the most dangerous of all enemies and should be treated as the highest priority whenever spotted.

Comparable to a medic and sorcerer, the classic version of the Arch Vile is almost always in the top 10 most frightening enemies in video game history, period. Its primary attack can only be averted by putting a wall between you and the Arch Vile, regardless of distance. Also, you might want to keep everyone else alive in the same room until you (or infighting) kills the beast. Otherwise, you’re likely to waste more ammo on a few of the enemies you’ve already gunned down.

Rockets and plasma guns work best against Arch. Do not use the BFG unless you want your butt to catch fire. Fortunately, the majority of levels do not include an Arch-Vile.

Mancubus

The Mancubus is indeed a giant slug with twin fireball launchers. In most open areas, these guys can be easy to handle on their own. On the other hand, these ones take as much as a garbage truck in damage and can take advantage of a distracted player.

The fireballs are tough to avoid since multiples of 2 are shot at any given time. Be aware of which side of the Mancubus you’re facing so that you can either strafe in between the fireballs or out of reach. Close combat is not recommended, but infighting is.

Arachnotron

The Arachnotron is a menace by itself, a dire threat in groups. It uses the plasma gun the same way Spiderdemon uses the chainsaw. Strafe these monsters constantly and blast ‘em with steady fire from your rocket launcher, chaingun or plasma rifle.

Forturnately, the Arachnotron is an easy target for infighting due to its plasma rifle’s rapid firing. If you have enough heavy brutes surrounding it, just circle around them all once Baby Spider starts shooting. Barons of Hell will knock Arachnotrons out of commission with ease.

Revenant

A Revenant IS as weak as it looks, especially on the easier settings. Unfortunately, the guided missiles it shoot are a pain to avoid in larger areas. Plasma guns and chainguns kill these guys quick. Be sure to shoot first, and they won’t be able to fire a shot. Otherwise, you’ll have to run around like a headless chicken in order to avoid the guided missiles.

Super shotguns (hunting shotguns) work for close encounters, but these guys can still punch hard.

Pain Elemental

Pain Elementals are indirect threats as they’re more or less mobile spawn points for lost souls. The more souls these floating goons spit out, the more ammo you’re likely to spend in the battle. Rapid fire weapons work here so long as you spot a pain elemental before they open their mouths. You can get 2 or more of these guys at once in some levels.

On the flipside, lost souls AND pain elementals make for easy infighting against larger groups of weaker enemies. If you manage to distract them, you can launch a couple rockets from a safe distance. Just be sure to steer clear when a Pain Elemental explodes. It’ll spawn 3 lost souls as a form of redemption.

For those who are playing on Ultra-Violence for whatever reason, Pain Elementals DO have a limit with how many lost souls they can spawn. Reaching such a limit will prevent Pain Elementals from attacking.

Chaingun Guy

Chaingun guys are uncommon zombiemen who act similar to Spiderdemons and Arachnotrons. They are mostly dangerous with larger groups of enemies. However, most of your arsenal can handle their weak HP count w/ease. Doom ][ Master Level “Trapped on Titan” shows an example of their potential threat in close quarters w/out cover. Their death animation is also graphic compared to Pistol Guy and Shotgun Guy.

Oh, yeah. Don't forget about this jerk:

For those who never cheated on 'Icon of Sin' of Doom 2, this is the Boss Brain hiding behind the monster skull wall. You kill this guy, you win the game.
