The Air Punch Scare Tactic

Here's a good tactic to help flush enemies out of hiding whenever you start a new level or enter a new room.

 

If you don't see or hear any enemies, stop right where you are. Switch to the fist and punch the air. Whichever enemy you hear, flash the right weapon for them. In case of the "Blarg!" or Imp startle, it's shotgun time. Mostly anything else is a mini-gun or higher (especially in anything Doom II and later).

 

Explanation: A punch still emits a 'sound' to your enemies, even if you don't hit anything. This will especially help if there's a Cyberdemon or Spiderdemon hiding in the larger areas. It also helps identify how many there are in both type and in numbers.
