Introduction:

Devil May Cry was and still is an immensely popular hack-and-slash video game series, making its debut to PlayStation 2 in 2001. It is considered the most popular series of its genre, with its stylised, addictive gun/sword battle system. It spanned three more sequels; a fourth which is coming out in 2012, and spanned a HD collection - Devil May Cry: HD Collection - in the same year. Each game comes with a set of trophies and a platinum.

Devil May Cry Secret Missions/Blue Orb Pieces Guide

I - First Playthrough (Normal)

Play through the story of Devil May Cry a first time. Try to grow accustomed to the battle system and steep difficulty curve early; it’ll come to your aid in further playthroughs.

Note that near the beginning, the game will offer you to switch the game difficulty to Easy Automatic, should you die three times in the first few Missions. Refuse this offer. If you accept, you’ll lock the Warming Up! Trophy, and this action cannot be reversed. Collecting Blue Orbs now will be a wasted effort if you do accept Easy Automatic, as that save file will be on a constant loop of that difficulty; you'll have to create a whole new save.

It's best to get the Secret Missions out of the way here, too. You can attempt Untouchable here, as it'll be easiest, but it isn't necessary. You'll most likely unlock it during one of the next playthroughs.

Along the way, you will earn the following story-related trophies and some that should come naturally:

Trophies Unlocked:

(B) Arachnophobia

(B) You’re No Angel

(B) Squashed Like A Bug

(B) Bird Of Prey

(B) Broken Halo

(B) Cold Turkey

(B) Plucked

(B) Night Terrors

(B) Fallen Angel

(B) Good Night

(B) The Nightmare Is Over

(B) The Devil Went Down To…

(B) Warming Up!

(S) Smashing Sensation (Missable)

(B) Thunderstruck (Missable)

(B) Hot As Hell (Missable)

(B) Gun Collector (Missable)

(S) Untouchable (Optional and missable)

(B) Blue Demon

(B) Table Of Contents

(B) Can You Keep A Secret? (Missable)

(S) The Secret Six (Missable)

(G) The Secret’s Out (Missable)

(B) Seeing Red

(S) Blood Flows Red

(G) Redemption

(S) The Devil Made Me Do It (Missable)

II - Second Playthrough (Hard)

You'll be thrust once again into the world of Devil May Cry, but this time, on hard difficulty. Enemies require more damage for defeat and, as a result, hit harder. You'll get through it, so keep at it. Don't worry, if you didn't achieve any of the Red Orb-related trophies, you should get them in this playthrough, as they are cumulative. Try to get all of Dante's skills here too, to get it out of the way, and for preparation of Dante Must Die mode. I also recommend maxing your health here; you will need as much as you can get for Dante Must Die mode. Keep going for the I Read You Like A Book trophy, but if it does not unlock here nor in the next step, you will need an extra playthrough.

Trophies Unlocked:

(G) The Devil's In The Details

(G) Blue Devil

(S) Bookworm

(G) I Read You Like A Book

(S) Boiling!!

III - Third Playthrough (Dante Must Die)

Here's where things get rough. Enemies hit even harder, are even stronger, and can make you witness of the notorious Devil Trigger. They will try to rip you to shreds, and as a result, this is the area where most trophy hunters will be raging at the difficulty. Take a few deep breaths and take every Mission separately, one at a time. Eventually, you will pull through, and hopefully, you will gain the Platinum.

Trophies Unlocked:

(G) Combustible!!!

(P) Platinum Trophy

IV (Optional) - Cleanup

If you missed any trophies, now's the time to get 'em. The worst is over, and very soon you should have gained your well-deserved Platinum trophy.

Conclusion:

Very tedious. Nonetheless, it is a proud Platinum to show off and really shows your skills in the game.

Finish the game on Normal Mode

I said it in the roadmap, but I'll say it again - if you are offered to switch to Easy Automatic, REFUSE THE OFFER. The save file will remain in a constant loop of that difficulty and there is no other choice but to create a whole new file. As a result, collecting Blue Orbs and purchasing upgrades will be a wasted effort as it will NOT carry over to your new file.

Enemies and bosses aren’t too hard and this play through will mainly be getting the story-related trophies and the multiple other simple trophies. Use this play through as training for the next few difficulties.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1223/5CD.jpgBoiling!!http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/site/icons/trophy_silver.png

Finish the Game on Hard Mode

After completing Normal Mode, load up your save and begin Hard Mode. Enemies require more hits and deal more damage to Dante. Once this is completed, you will unlock this trophy.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1223/F99.jpgCombustible!!!http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/site/icons/trophy_gold.png

Finish the game on Dante Must Die Mode

Dante Must Die Mode is when things get hot. Enemies have their own Devil Trigger (unleashed when the countdown that appears in battle reaches zero) and, as always, require more hits and beat Dante to a pulp. If you survive this mode, well done, you got yourself this trophy.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1223/971.jpgThe Devil's In The Detailshttp://www.ps3trophies.org/images/site/icons/trophy_gold.png

Purchase all of Dante's Skills

(Missable!)

Dante has Skills available for purchase in the game for his Alastor and Ifrit weapons. A grand total of 26,800 Red Orbs are required to purchase every one of them. Both only have five main upgrades, with further upgrades available for two in each category. In all honesty, this isn’t a difficult trophy, as there aren’t too many upgrades you need to get. Anyway, here’s the upgrades:

ALASTOR:

Stinger Lv. 1: 350 Orbs (Stinger Lv. 2: 1,400 Orbs)

Round Trip: 1,550 Orbs

Air Hike: 4,000 Orbs

Air Raid: 750 Orbs

Vortex Lv. 1: 1,150 Orbs (Vortex Lv. 2: 2,400 Orbs)

IFRIT:

Rolling Blaze: 3,450 Orbs

Magma Drive: 500 Orbs

Kick-13 Lv. 1: 700 Orbs (Kick-13 Lv. 2: 2,100 Orbs)

Meteor Lv. 1: 900 Orbs (Meteor Lv. 2: 2,700 Orbs)

Inferno: 4,850 Orbs

Complete a Secret Mission

(Missable!)

Secret Missions are…well…missions that are secret in Devil May Cry. There are twelve in total. Finding one, although, ain’t that hard. The missions can request anything of you, but will always involve you killing something (what else?)

Check out (G) The Secret’s Out for further details.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1223/2B9.jpgThe Secret Sixhttp://www.ps3trophies.org/images/site/icons/trophy_silver.png

Complete six Secret Missions

(Missable!)

This trophy requires you to complete half of the total amount of Secret Missions.

Check out (G) The Secret’s Out for further details.

Complete all Secret Missions

(Missable!)

This trophy requires you to complete all twelve Secret Missions in this game. I have composed a guide of their locations, what mission they’re in and a brief description of their requirements. Please refer to my guide here for further details on Secret Missions.

Achieve an S Rank on any Mission

(Missable!)

The game judges your final score on three things: how fast you finish the Mission, how many Red Orbs you attain during the Mission, and how much damage is taken. All in all, Mission 5 and 13 are good choices to quickly nab this trophy, as both are short and sweet. If you so happen to be playing on an easy difficulty, this trophy gets even easier.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1223/F50.jpgThunderstruckhttp://www.ps3trophies.org/images/site/icons/trophy_bronze.png

Perform an S Rank Combo using Alastor

(Missable!)

As you should very well know, Alastor is Dante’s signature sword he has since the beginning of the game. This is a nice and quick trophy to get, and I got this at the beginning of Mission 11. In fact, I got this and (B) Hot As Hell in the span of one minute during this chapter. When you head down into the sewers after immediately being plunged into battle with a Death Scythe at the very beginning of Mission 11, travel through these very sewers, ignoring the Blades. When you are forced to return this way, there will be a double amount of Blades. This is an opportune time to get this trophy, as there are plenty of enemies. I simply used the basic :triangle: :triangle: :triangle: combination and my score was bumped up to Stylish in no time.

Perform an S Rank Combo using Ifrit

(Missable!)

As you should also know, Ifrit is a weapon Dante attains near the beginning of the game. As with (B) Thunderstruck, this is a quick and easy trophy, and I attained it in Mission 11. I simply used the basic :triangle: :triangle: :triangle: :triangle: combination for Ifrit and my score was bumped up to Stylish in no time.

Unlock every enemy file in the status menu

This comes naturally in your first play through. A single encounter with an enemy is all that is required for an enemy file to be registered. Thus, if done correctly, you should attain this trophy in Mission 22, upon encountering Mundus.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1223/024.jpgBookwormhttp://www.ps3trophies.org/images/site/icons/trophy_silver.png

Unlock 50% of all entries for every enemy file in the status menu

(Missable!)

I unlocked this without even trying in Mission 11. This trophy should unlock naturally although can still be missed, but more likely than not, (G) I Read You Like A Book will be missed.

Check up on (G) I Read You Like A Book for further details.

Unlock all the entries for every enemy file in the status menu

(Missable!)

Entries for an enemy are unlocked by seeing them perform a certain move, performing a certain move against them and even receiving an enemy attack. Please note that a certain move requires you to die, and thus you cannot get this trophy during your play through for http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/site/icons/trophy_silver.png The Devil Made Me Do It.

Thankfully, an enemy has its move counted for you in the status menu (for example, in the Marionette page, the count will be 4/7, meaning you have four of the seven moves recorded) so you only need to check up on the guide given here:

Collect 50,000 Red Orbs

Red Orbs are dropped by every enemy and are the form of currency in Devil May Cry. Thankfully, this trophy is cumulative over your multiple play throughs, so without a doubt you should have all three Red Orb-related trophies by the end of Dante Must Die mode. You shouldn’t have any reason to worry about this.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1223/0F6.jpgBlue Demonhttp://www.ps3trophies.org/images/site/icons/trophy_bronze.png

Complete a Blue Orb

Blue Orb pieces are scattered around the game and more likely than not you’ll complete a full piece without even realising. Either way, you’ll need to unlock this anyway on the way to http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/site/icons/trophy_gold.png Blue Devil.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1223/0A1.jpgBlue Devilhttp://www.ps3trophies.org/images/site/icons/trophy_gold.png

Max out the Health Bar

Blue Orb pieces are scattered around the game, and getting all of them will be key to beating the game on Dante Must Die difficulty mode, so I highly recommend getting them all before that play through. Note that blue orbs are attained from Secret Missions and the Time Statues also. Below is my guide to the Blue Orb pieces. For the locations of the Secret Missions, check out (G) The Secret’s Out. Note that 5 Blue Orbs are bought from the Time Statue.

For a full guide to the Blue Orb pieces and their locations, please refer to my guide here.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1223/CDB.jpgGun Collectorhttp://www.ps3trophies.org/images/site/icons/trophy_bronze.png

Collect all Guns

(Missable!)

This is an easily missed trophy. There is a nice selection of weapons in Devil May Cry, and collecting all of them awards you with a trophy. Anyway, here is where each is found:

Ebony + Ivory - Dante’s guns from the very beginning.

Shotgun - Find this on a table in the library across from the Sin Scissor picture, Mission 2.

Grenade Gun - After defeating Phantom in Mission 8, in the mechanism room shortly afterwards, grab the Grenade Gun from the skeleton.

The Needle Gun - Mission 12, in the area with stairs leading up to the deck of the ship, grab the Needle Gun, which is near the stairs and is shining.

Nightmare Beta - In Mission 15, you will go into one of the Emblem areas (Blue or Red) and get a storyline-related item, Pair Of Lances. If you choose to go through the other as well, the item at the end will always be Nightmare Beta.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1223/F69.jpgThe Devil Made Me Do Ithttp://www.ps3trophies.org/images/site/icons/trophy_silver.png

Finish the game without using any Yellow Orbs

(Missable!)

This one isn’t too difficult as long as you just keep focused. Clear the game without using any Yellow Orbs (the function of Yellow Orbs is to give you a retry). If you do happen to die during the play through, you will have to reload your save and start the Mission over. Thankfully, difficulty is irrelevant for this trophy.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1223/B38.jpgUntouchablehttp://www.ps3trophies.org/images/site/icons/trophy_silver.png

Clear a mission without taking damage

(Missable!)

Simple enough. Mission 5, in my opinion, is the best Mission for this trophy. I recommend getting this while you go for (S) Smashing Sensation. Check out that trophy for a few more details.

Devil May Cry Boss Attack Analysis/Strategies

This is the base where all the strategies and analysis info for the various bosses of Devil May Cry will be stored. Note to readers, the content may contain spoilers of the game's plot, thus the spoiler boxes. Read at your own risk.

Phantom:

[spoiler=126]ATTACKS:

-Pincer Sweep. Inputs when Dante is near. Jump or run to dodge. Minimal damage.

-Geyser Eruption. Erupts 4-6 geysers. Readies by lowering, and red/yellow swirls appear by Dante's feet. Simply run to avoid. Fair damage.

-Jumping Crush. Jumps and lands on Dante. Jump at the right time to avoid. Fair damage.

-Fireball. Fires a fireball at Dante. Charges a white orb in its mouth and sends it flying at high speeds towards Dante. Hide behind obstructions or roll to dodge. Moderate damage.

-Poison stinger. Swipes at Dante when he is on his back. Jump to avoid. Minimal damage.

STRATEGY:

Use firearms to chip away at his damage when far away. When in close-range, though, try to get a few swipes in with Alastor. Once you identify all his attacks, you'll be okay. His fireball is the one to watch out for - he uses it often and it takes a fair chunk of Dante's health. Your main aim is to jump on his back, and swipe away with Alastor. Don't stay all day, as he will eventually try to slash at you.

Nelo Angelo:

[spoiler=125]ATTACKS:

- Slashing combo. Using slash/slash/double slash, it can be avoided by dodging or running at the right time. Fair damage.

- Will teleport, and after so, will unleash a fury of attacks. Keep on your toes as this happens often. Dodge by running at the right time. Fair damage.

- Slashes Dante into the air and slashes him back to earth. Dodge by running at the right time. Fair damage.

- Fires a fireball. It comes at Dante with tremendous speed. With a well-timed dodge, Dante can rush up and get a few slashes in. If Dante is hit, he will receive minimal damage.

STRATEGY:

Good timing and memorisation of his attacks is key to these three battles. Once you get the hang of those, the battle is relatively easy. He taunts you often, and this is the perfect time to come in and slash away. Whenever he releases a flurry of sword attacks, a swift dodge can open a small frame of time to get in with a sword combo. Whenever he teleports, keep on your toes. He will reappear near you and attempt at making some damage. Dodging this well can result in more time for hacking away. Whenever you are not in close-range, though, keep those dual pistols handy for some chipping damage.

Griffon:

[spoiler=128]ATTACKS:

-Charges at Dante, possible while airbourne and on solid ground. Dodge by running. If too slow, Griffon pecks Dante. Minimal damage.

-Electricity lasers. Land on ground and separate as two lines. Meet in the middle. Jump to avoid. Fair damage.

-Rays of electricity lasers. Jump to avoid one, duck the next, etc. Fair damage.

-3RD FIGHT: Disappears out of sight and suddenly dive bombs on Dante. A rough attack, keep on your toes. Moderate damage.

STRATEGY:

This, in my opinion, was the easiest battle of the game's bosses. Griffon gives you tons of oppertunities to slash away at him with Alastor. Sometimes when you deal enough damage, he lands on the ground, unmoving, for a few vital seconds. Seize the oppertunity to attack, using Devil Trigger if you wish. Dodging his attacks is so easy, I doubt anyone will have trouble with this boss.

Nightmare:

[spoiler=123] ATTACKS:

- Swallow attack. When there is no light in the room/no circle runes in operation, he sends a mound of ooze after Dante. Dante is then forced into battle with an easier version of one of the other bosses of the game, Phantom, Nelo Angelo and Griffon. Damage depends on how the mini-boss fight goes.

- Orbs. Shot at Dante, simple to dodge. Minimal damage.

- Small, moving bits of slime, which turn to crystal on impact. Keep running to avoid. Fair damage if multiple ones attack.

- Spears. Around three at a time. Dodge by running. Deals moderate damage.

- Blue beam attack. Prepares by making his crystal vulnerable and blue beams appear on the floor. Dodge by staying close/behind him. Deals moderate to dangerous amounts of damage. (3rd FIGHT ONLY: This beam lasts up to a lengthy five seconds.)

STRATEGY:

When you hit the circular runes and the room is well-lit, his sphere will come out of his back and remains vulnerable for a short amount of time. Take advantage of this and slash away at him. Avoid using Ifrit, as it is much to slow for the battle at hand. If you do happen to get swallowed, and defeat the mini-boss inside, he loses around quarter of his life. I used this to my advantage when his life was low. Mini-bosses also have a chance of dropping green orbs, but don’t count on this happening all the time. Also, as suggested by Angry Gargoyle, for Nightmare, it is actually easier to time :triangle: (with Alastor) for the side spear and boomerang attacks. The deflection stuns him for 20-30 seconds and allows you to do some heavy damage to him when activating Devil Trigger. This is essential for Dante Must Die mode.

Mundus:

[spoiler=124]

ATTACKS:

- FIRST FORM: Spending too much time doing nothing in his first form will result in him spitting out attacks that are very difficult to avoid. Try defeating him as fast as possible in this form.

- SECOND FORM: Orbs. Shoot to destroy. Items sometimes left behind. Minimal to fair damage.

- SECOND FORM: Earth blocks. Dodging is simple. Minimal to fair damage.

- SECOND FORM: A beam. Releases a beam from himself. Quite a dangerous attack, dodge to the best of your ability by rolling/jumping. Fair to moderate damage.

- SECOND FORM: Fireballs. Come from the sky. Rolling is the best method of avoiding it. Fair to moderate damage.

STRATEGY:

First Form:

Use fireballs, all the way. Using a Devil Gauge with a few unused runes will definitely clock some damage on Mundus. Quick though; if the battle drags, he’ll deploy attacks that’re very difficult to dodge. Make this a quick fight, and try not to lose too much health. It carries over to the second form of Mundus.

Second Form:

Firearms are your best bet in this battle, and Devil Trigger has a massive importance here. Got any Untouchables? Use ‘em. Playing Dante Must Die mode? USE UNTOUCHABLES. They are your saviour in this fight. Devil Trigger is most useful in Normal mode, as it can deal amazing damage to Mundus.

It seems like all that's missing here is a little guide to finding all the hidden items to help cut through DMD bosses.

I've been using this: Devil's Lair - Devil May Cry

I kind of screwed myself slightly...you can buy one untouchable but after you pick one up, it's not available anymore until you're out.

Finished S Ranking all of Normal Mode, purely for satisfaction.. was just going to do an item collection run after maxing the blue bar on my first run, and then finishing Hard, but it started that well for me, I decided I might as well try and get the 'King of Hell' picture..

So now my next goal is 'Dante Must Dodge' mode... even with about 15 of each of the items, I'm not looking forward to it... a lot of dodge mastery and ifrit expertise required.. and the kicker is, even if I beat it, I probably won't have the platinum thanks to that silly Enemy database trophy..

Might look at finishing my Vergil run on DMC3 before Max Payne 3 comes out instead..

Entries for an enemy are unlocked by seeing them perform a certain move, performing a certain move against them and even receiving an enemy attack. Please note that a certain move requires you to die, and thus you cannot get this trophy during your play through for The Devil Made Me Do It.

this is not true, you don't have to die, just be in the red health zone, the blades will do the moves and you can still survive both times,i got it by accident in the water cell secret mission and for the ground version afterwards i adjusted my health with the devil trigger regeneration to make sure to survive the hit

trophy popped together with the last enemy report for mundus

also for the entries,i can just say save save save, everytime you get an entry save your game, even if you die and reset you keep the entries this way

The move that the Blade initiates is a finishing move and only happens when a small segment of Dante's health is left. 95% you will die from it, thus it is not recommended to do this on the same playthrough as The Devil Made Me Do It.

small segment of dante's health = 20% ? as i said, being in the red zone is enough, and their finishing attack only does like 5% damage on normal, you can easiliy survive 3 of those,as it's not a finisher, just a normal attack after a scream...even the enemy entry guide on gamefaq says you only need to be attacked while in the red,not dying by it

i've done it in mission 16 i think (where you fight griffon for the 3rd time),in the very first room you encounter either 2 cylops or 3 blades (it's random),if you survive the attack, save and retry,if you die, simply retry

Indeed it is a finishing move, it is intended to finish Dante when his health is in the red.

Hi, sorry to bother, just a quick question.

I'm about to start my 4th playthrough in order to complete all the enemies entries but I need an opinion here: do I do this on normal or hard? can I get all entries on normal or the enemies are so easy that I need to play on hard in order to see some of the moves? Hope someone can help me with this, thanks in advance.
