Introduction
Demon’s Souls is a difficult, time-consuming game with a steep learning curve. One of the major hurdles for new players is understanding the game’s World Tendency and Character Tendency concepts. I recommend consulting my Demon’s Souls Tendency FAQ for a detailed explanation of these concepts, and how they affect gameplay.

The trophies themselves are relatively straightforward. 19 of the game's 38 trophies are unlocked by killing the game's bosses and sub-bosses. The remainder is, on one level or another, dedicated entirely to the collection and, in most cases, usage of various items. Because you need duplicates of many of these items, most of which appear only once per playthrough, at least 3 playthroughs are required (unless you are using glitches; see below). I recommend consulting my Demon's Souls Collection Guide, which provides you with the information required to unlock these collection-related trophies.

Getting Started

When creating a character, choosing the Royalty class is recommended, as they start with the Soul Arrow spell and the Fragrant Ring, which allows you to regenerate MP. Note that all character classes eventually gain access to these, but starting with them will make the game’s earlier levels much easier to manage.

Upon finalizing your character, you’ll face the Vanguard boss in a tutorial level. This first encounter will, more than likely, not end in your favor, but that’s alright. When the dust clears, you’ll be transported to The Nexus.

You will have to complete Boletarian Palace (1-1), the game’s first proper level, before you’re allowed to do anything else. This level's end boss, Phalanx, will drop the Lead Demon's Soul when killed. Demon's Souls are items dropped by the game's end bosses and sub-bosses and are used to forge unique weapons, learn spells and learn miracles.

Upon your return to the Nexus, the Maiden in Black will instruct you to talk with The Monumental, whom you’ll find on the second floor of the Nexus. As you’re facing the giant statue, turn left. There is a lit candle on the floor in front of her. After your conversation, you can spend any Souls (the game’s currency) you obtain to increase your Soul Level by visiting the Maiden in Black.

Character Development

When increasing your Soul Level, I recommend focusing on Vitality (increases Max HP and Item Burden) and Dexterity (increases the power of your bow). Which direction you decide to develop your character in will determine which other skills you should devote your attention to… spell users will want to focus on Intelligence and Magic, whereas melee characters will be more interested in increasing their Strength.

Check out Phorus's Character Builds thread for more insight into Demon's Souls character creation.

Walkthrough

First Playthrough:
You’ll want to aim for the bulk of your trophies in your first playthrough, as New Game+ is substantially harder and by the time you've fulfilled the requirements for these trophies, you will be of a sufficiently high enough level to handle it. By the end of this playthrough, you should have all of the game’s bronze and silver trophies, and at least one gold trophy.

Which weapon you choose to make your primary weapon depends on your character build and personal preference. I recommend consulting Phorus's Demon's Souls Equipment Paradise thread for a much more thorough exploration of this topic. Regardless, I highly recommend at least hanging on to a Compound Long Bow, and upgrading it to a Sticky Compound Long Bow +5 with Spiderstones. The Sticky Compound Long Bow +5 is the most powerful bow in the game, and an indispensable tool to have in your arsenal, particularly for the game's boss battles.

As you collect Demon's Souls, use them according to what will be of the greatest benefit to you. You will be completing multiple playthroughs regardless, and may as well be as prepared for them as you can possibly be. Note that you should avoid consuming Demon's Souls unless you've already exhausted all of their trophy-related uses.

First Playthrough Itinerary:
  • Kill every boss and sub-boss in every World up to, and including, Tower Knight (1-2), Flamelurker (2-2), Maneater (3-2), Old Hero (4-2) and Dirty Colossus (5-2).
  • Push all World Tendencies to Pure Black by dying in Body Form seven times in each World, obtaining all rings and unique weapons exclusive to Pure Black World Tendency in each.
  • Farm weapon upgrade stones, using them to obtain all “Best Weapon by…” trophies.
  • Using the method outlined in the Demon’s Souls Tendency FAQ, push all World Tendencies to Pure White. False King should be the only boss remaining. Obtain all rings and unique weapons exclusive to Pure White World Tendency in each. Note that fulfilling the requirements for pushing World Tendencies from Pure Black to Pure White has probably given you Pure White Character Tendency. Talk to the Monumental to receive the Friend’s Ring.
  • Hunt down any rings that you haven’t found yet, as well as any unique weapons found within the game's levels.
  • Push your Character Tendency to Pure Black by killing 5 innocent NPCs, such as the vendors found in the 5 Worlds (Dregling, Filthy Man, Once Royal Mistress, Graverobber Blige and Filthy Woman). Next, rescue Yurt from a cage surrounded by Augites of Guidance in Tower of Latria 3-2, then kill him. This should trigger the appearance of Mephistopheles on the 2nd floor of the Nexus. Fulfill her side quests to receive the Foe’s Ring.
  • Complete 1-4, killing False King.
  • When you’re ready to proceed to the finale, talk to the Maiden In Black. After confronting the Old One, leave the area without harming the Maiden In Black to receive the Maiden In Black Demon’s Soul, and the “World Uniter’s Trophy” trophy.

Your items (as well as Character and World Tendencies) carry over to New Game + with the same character.

New Game +:

Kill the level bosses and use their Demon’s Souls to forge unique weapons, learn spells and learn miracles to unlock the remaining gold trophies.

Limiting Playthroughs With Exploits / Glitches:

Ordinarily, some of the game’s gold trophies can only be earned in New Game + or beyond. At least one of these playthroughs can be completely eliminated by trading weapons with another player. Consult the Item / Weapon Trading Thread to find players to trade with. Note that both players must be within 10-15 Soul Levels of each other.

Additionally, you can obtain the game's platinum trophy in a single playthrough by using a glitch that allows certain items, including Demon's Souls and upgrade stones, to be "duped" in single player mode. Those wishing to take this route are advised to consult the Trading and "Duping" section of my Demon's Souls Collection Guide to learn more about this process.

General Tips
  • Always play in Soul Form. While in Soul Form, your character does more damage and is more difficult for enemies to detect. Additionally, your world cannot be invaded by Black Phantoms. Perhaps most significantly, death while in Soul Form has no effect on World Tendency. The Max HP reduction can be offset by wearing the Cling Ring and / or increasing your Vitality stat. Whenever your character revives (by killing a boss or by helping an online player defeat a boss as a Blue Phantom), commit suicide in The Nexus, where dying has no effect on World Tendency.
  • If you're having trouble completing the levels, your Soul Level is probably too low. Wearing the Ring of Avarice and / or Silver Bracelets (female characters only), casting the Soul Thirst spell and defeating enemies with the Soulsucker spell are great ways to increase your Soul farming yields.
  • Play offline. There have been reports of World Tendency being reset to Neutral by playing online.

Supplemental Materials
  • Demon’s Souls Tendency FAQ includes detailed explanations of the concepts of Character and World Tendency, Primeval Demon locations, unique Tendency events, etc.
  • Demon's Souls Collection Guide includes information on using Demon's Souls; rescuing Sage Freke, Yuria the Witch and Saint Urbain; the locations of rings, unique weapons, upgrade stones and Crystal Lizards; etc.

Default Demon's Souls Trophy Guide, Pt. 1

Old King's Trophy
Conqueror of Old King Doran
Old King Doran is an optional sub-boss, found in a mausoleum in Boletarian Palace 1-1. You can obtain the Mausoleum Key by defeating Ostrava, either by rescuing him in each of the Boletarian Palace levels and defeating his Black Phantom form in 1-4 (which also earns you a Rune Sword and Rune Shield), or by killing him in his Body Form at any point before that, such as when you first meet him while collecting the Thief's Ring in 1-1. Upon entering the mausoleum, bait Old King Doran into chasing you with a ranged attack and flee to the area with the catapults, hiding behind the second catapult you pass on your way back. Old King Doran will give chase but will eventually give up, turn around and head back to the mausoleum. When his back is turned, you can hit him several times and he will not retaliate. Eventually he will give chase again; at this point run back to the second catapult and repeat the process until he is defeated. Note that killing Old King Doran will push your World Tendency towards Black, but while you don't have to kill him to receive the Demonbrandt, you do have to kill him to receive the "Old King's Trophy".

Flying Dragon's Trophy
Slayer of Demon “Blue Flying Dragon”
The Blue Flying Dragon is a sub-boss in Boletarian Palace 1-4. You'll first encounter the dragon perched on a castle wall. Step back into the building you came from and fire arrows at the Blue Dragon until it flies away. Later in the level, you will find the dragon perched above a giant staircase. Employ whatever protection available (fire resistance, Second Chance, etc.) and run up the left side of the stairs and get directly beneath the dragon. Hit it from below with arrows until it is defeated.

Default Demon's Souls Trophy Guide, Pt. 2

Phalanx’s Trophy
Slayer of Demon “Phalanx”
Phalanx is the end boss of Boletarian Palace 1-1. Phalanx is best handled with fire-based attacks, such as Firebombs (you'll find many throughout this level), turpentine-buffed weapons and, on New Game + playthroughs, fire-based magic. Attack the Hoplite enemies that cover the Phalanx from the rear for maximum damage. Stay mobile to avoid errant spears, and use the pillars as cover when necessary.

Tower Knight’s Trophy
Slayer of Demon “Tower Knight”
Tower Knight is the end boss of Boletarian Palace 1-2. Upon entering the fog gate, head up the stairs ahead of you and kill all of the archers that surround the courtyard. From the position where the archers formerly stood, lock-on to the Tower Knight and hit him with ranged attacks, such as the Soul Arrow spell. When you see the Tower Knight begin his ranged spear attack, roll backwards to avoid heavy damage.

Penetrator’s Trophy
Slayer of Demon “Penetrator”
Penetrator is the end boss of Boletarian Palace 1-3. This encounter will be made much easier by rescuing Biorr, who is found in a dungeon in 1-2. After obtaining the Iron Ring of Keys by killing one of the Fat Official in 1-3, head back towards 1-2 and into the building just past the Tower Knight archstone. Use the keys to unlock the door on your right-hand side. Downstairs, you will encounter another Fat Official, who, when killed, drops the Bloody Key used to rescue Yuria The Witch in 1-3. Once the Fat Official has been dealt with, unlock the door to Biorr's cell and speak to him. Having been rescued, Biorr will appear during the Penetrator battle and serve as a valuable distraction while you use ranged attacks on the boss. Regardless of whether or not you take this precaution, Penetrator is a relatively slow foe with moves that are fairly easy to evade with well-timed rolls. Note that the Penetrator can destroy the pillars in the boss area, so don't use them for cover.

Adjudicator’s Trophy
Slayer of Demon “Adjudicator”
Adjudicator is the end boss of Shrine of Storms 4-1. Upon entering the fog gate, immediately sprint down the stairs and begin attacking the wound in the Adjudicator's side. This will seemingly have little effect, but will eventually cause him to fall over, exposing a bird nested on its head. Hit the bird with a stream of melee attacks until the Adjudicator is back on its feet, repeating the process until it is destroyed. The only attack that the Adjudicator can reach your character with down here is a swinging attack, which can be evaded by a well-timed roll.

Note that you can circumvent most of 4-1 using a shortcut near the area where you encounter the Vanguard. YouTube user byakokoko illustrates:

Old Hero’s Trophy
Slayer of Demon “Old Hero”
Old Hero is the end boss of Shrine of Storms 4-2. Equipping a Thief’s Ring and moving slowly will, for the most part, prevent you from being seen by the blind Old Hero. Hide behind the first pillar on the left and hit him with an arrow or ranged magic, causing him to howl in agony. Once the Old Hero continues his normal patrol, hit him again. Continue this process until he is defeated, taking your time to avoid giving away your position. If the Old Hero finds his way over to your pillar, stay in cover and avoid attacking him.

Fool’s Idol’s Trophy
Slayer of Demon “Fool's Idol”
Fool’s Idol is the end boss of Tower of Latria 3-1. Before entering the fog gate, climb the east-side spiral staircase behind you, following the path at the top to a room where you’ll find a dregling who, contrary to what he will tell you, will interfere in your battle against the Fool’s Idol if you do not kill him. After killing the dregling ("Liar"), head back to the church and enter the fog gate. Hide behind the left-side pillars, popping out to hit Fool’s Idol with arrows or spells, taking care to avoid the paralysis tiles she creates on the floor. Eventually, Fool’s Idol will create clones of herself, which can be differentiated from the real Fool’s Idol by locking-on -- the real Fool's Idol will not have a health bar above her head. Additionally, if you neglected to dispatch the passive dreglings in the church, they face towards the real Fool’s Idol when she appears.

Maneater’s Trophy
Slayer of Demon “Maneater”
Maneater is / are the end boss(es) of Tower of Latria 3-2. Instead of entering the fog gate, press yourself against the left side of it and take out your bow. Aim at the Maneater through the fog and hit it with arrows until it dies; doing so will summon a second Maneater. At this point, enter the fog and rush to the center brazier (i.e. torch), keeping it between you and the Maneater. Eventually, the Maneater will get stuck; without moving, take out your bow and finish it off.

Leechmonger’s Trophy
Slayer of Demon “Leechmonger”
Leechmonger is the end boss of Valley of Defilement 5-1. Upon entering the fog gate, head to the cliff edge and take out your bow. From this distance, the Leechmonger will be unable to reach you, but it will periodically cast a health regeneration spell. Hit it with a continuous barrage of arrows until it is destroyed.

Dirty Colossus’ Trophy
Slayer of Demon “Dirty Colossus”
Dirty Colossus is the end boss of Valley of Defilement 5-2. Upon entering the fog gate, hide behind the small rock outcropping on the left, where it will be unable to reach you. Peek out and attack the Dirty Colossus with your bow, stepping back into cover when it launches its fly swarm attack.

Armor Spider’s Trophy
Slayer of Demon “Armor Spider”
Armor Spider is the end boss of Stonefang Tunnel 2-1. Upon entering the fog gate, run to the left, hiding behind the small rock outcropping where it cannot reach you. Attack the Armor Spider with your bow.

Flamelurker’s Trophy
Slayer of Demon “Flamelurker”
Flamelurker is the end boss of Stonefang Tunnel 2-2. The site of this battle contains a lot of scenery for the Flamelurker to get stuck on, including a bone directly to your left as you enter the fog gate. Lure the Flamelurker to your starting position and then take cover on the other side of the bone. The boss will run continuously into this bone, allowing you to pelt it with well-placed arrows. In the event that the Flamelurker finds its way around your piece of cover, use similar luring and trapping tactics to get it caught up again.

Default Demon's Souls Trophy Guide, Pt. 3

False King’s Trophy
Slayer of Demon “False King”
False King is the end boss of Boletarian Palace 1-4. Before attempting this boss, obtain a high-Dexterity bow (e.g. Sticky Compound Long Bow +5) and a few hundred arrows. Upon entering the fog gate, do not move. Equip your bow and aim slightly above and to the side of False King’s head and repeatedly attack him with arrows until he is destroyed. Note that False King has been known to move out of range after a while; you may have to re-adjust your aim or, failing that, level up your character to raise their Dexterity stat.

Storm King’s Trophy
Slayer of Demon “Storm King”
Storm King is the end boss of Shrine of Storms 4-3. To defeat this boss, you will need the Stormruler sword, which is located on the Northernmost corner of the level near the two Crystal Lizards. After obtaining the sword, rush to the rear of the destroyed building in the Southeast corner of the level, as no enemies can reach you here. When Storm King passes by, lock on and swing the Stormruler, repeating the process until the demon is destroyed.

Old Monk’s Trophy
Slayer of Demon “Old Monk”
Old Monk is the end boss of Tower of Latria 3-3. Disable your Playstation 3’s internet connection before tackling this boss, as it will make the battle much easier. Failing to do so results in Old Monk summoning an online opponent to take his place. The first half of the battle is a basic melee showdown. Later in the battle the Old Monk uses the Homing Soul Arrow spell; whenever you see an arc of yellow spheres appear over the boss’s head, get ready to dodge. Those having trouble with this boss should note that large swords (e.g. Dragon Bone Smasher) have the ability to knock this boss off-balance, thereby reducing the opportunities he has to attack you.

Maiden Astraea’s Trophy
Slayer of Demon “Maiden Astraea”
Maiden Astraea is the end boss of Valley of Defilement 5-3. Upon entering the fog gate, head to the right, killing all of the worshipping dreglings on the way. When you reach the edge of the cliff, take out your bow and fire arrows continuously at Maiden Astraea, ignoring her bodyguard, Garl Vindland. Maiden Astaea will not attack, but she will attempt to heal herself; firing enough arrows in rapid enough succession, you should be able to outpace her. When she finally dies, allow the game to complete it’s autosave procedure, then select Load Game from the game’s menu. Upon reloading your game, both characters will be dead, making it much easier to reach the archstone safely to claim your Demon’s Soul and exit the level.

Dragon God’s Trophy
Slayer of Demon “Dragon God”
Dragon God is the end boss of Stonefang Tunnel 2-3. Upon entering the fog gate run down the hall and take a left, hiding behind the pillar. Looking across to the other side, you’ll see debris blocking your path, which can be cleared only by melee attack or magic (not arrows). I strongly recommend using a spell like Soul Arrow to break down the debris, as using a melee weapon leaves you open to the Dragon God’s attack. Continue this pattern of taking cover, destroying debris and running to the next piece of cover until you reach a spear gun. Activating this will cause damage to the Dragon God. Head down the stairs from the spear gun and employ the same tactics to reach the spear gun on the other side. Activating this will cause the Dragon God to fall, at which point get just within lock-on range and finish him off with ranged attack, as he can still cause damage in this state.

World Uniter’s Trophy
Old One Put to Sleep & World United
After killing all of the level bosses, speak to the Maiden In Black to trigger the finale. After confronting the Old One, leave the area without harming the Maiden In Black, triggering the 'good' ending and unlocking this trophy.

Sage’s Trophy
All Spells Learned
Consult my Demon's Souls Collection Guide for information on how to learn all spells.

Saint’s Trophy
All Miracles Learned
Consult my Demon's Souls Collection Guide for information on how to learn all miracles.

Rogue’s Trophy
All Rings Obtained
Consult my Demon's Souls Collection Guide for information on how to obtain all rings.

Soldier’s Trophy
All Unique Weapons Obtained
Consult my Demon's Souls Collection Guide for information on how to obtain all unique weapons.

This seems very straightforward and well put together. I've been meaning to get around to Demon's Souls, this guide might make me pick it up off the bottom of the pile!

It's a great game... unless you forget your fighting on a narrow cliffside and continually roll off the side dodging attacks.
