Sandbox Mode Challenge Guide

Recommended Posts

I've received Gold in all single player challenges. Unfortunately, I have not been able to record the information for the coop challenges, but have completed most of them with random coop guests. Only the Gold records/prize amounts are listed here.

Before starting, a big THANKS to BTHR Zero X for not only the outfit guide, but also for the Magazine Guide! And after typing up this guide, I found several really good videos to add from youtube users doctorchoo and PowerPyx, so be sure to thank them by commenting on the youtube pages.

It should also be noted that because videos were added after the writing of this guide, techniques in a video may differ from the written description. So, be sure to check both, as not all methods will work for everyone.

For most challenges in Sandbox Mode, you should wear the Ninja Outfit to make things easier. See BTHR Zero X's Outfit Guide on how to obtain it.

They are not in order as listed in-game. I have grouped them so that similar challenges are listed together. Use Ctrl+F to find a specific challenge.

If you need any help finding/creating any weapon I've referenced here, open the spoiler below.

[spoiler=985688554]

Plate Launcher: combine Plates + Cement Saw. Plates can be found at Luaii Wauwii (N105) in Silver Strip. The Cement Saw can be found at the maintenance room nearest Luaii Wauwii, and the maintenance room in South Plaza nearest the Chop Suey challenge marker.

Super BFG: combine Blast Frequency Gun + Amplifier. Blast Frequency Gun can be found in the secret laboratory by taking the elevator in Palisades Mall (near the back alley entrance from Hot Excitorama (N110)), then entering the doors right next to the elevator. There is only one, but if you leave and come back, it will respawn. Amplifier can be found in several locations, including Palisades Mall in Robsaka Digital (P213), and Royal Flush Plaza in Tunemakers (R105).

Queens: can be found randomly when killing zimbies, especially the mutated ones. Also, several Queens can be found in the secret laboratory, in the large open section.

Rocket launcher: combine Rocket Fireworks + Lead Pipe. These items can be found all over the place, but a good location is Silver Strip, as both can be found at the maintenance room nearest the Slot Ranch Casino entrance. Alternatively, you can buy this weapon at Tinkerbox (N103), the pawn shop in Silver Strip across from the SUV, for $40,000.

Hail Mary: combine Football + Grenade. An unlimited supply of Grenades can be found Palisades Mall in High-Noon Shooting Range (P218), and Footballs can be found KokoNutz Sports Town (P110) in Palisades Mall, or SporTrance (R112) in Royal Flush Plaza.

Freedom Bear: combine Robot Bear + LMG. In Yucatan Casino, a Robot Bear is sitting atop a bank of slot machines nearest the entryway to Palisades Mall, and an LMG can be found atop a ledge against the north wall nearest the doors to Food Court. Another good spot to find a Robot Bear is Brand New U (P203 Palisades Mall), and an LMG in Atlantica Casino (climb onto ceiling via rocks behind giant clam).

Flamethrower: combine Water Gun + Gasoline Container. In Yucatan Casino, Water Guns can be found in water fountains next to the entryway to Palisades Mall and the escalator to Shoal Nightclub (Y102), as well as atop a hanging platform in the central area. A Gasoline Container can be found on platform next to the last Water Gun listed, and the platform nearest the entryway to Palisades Mall. Three more Gasoline Containers can be found in nearby Silver Strip, just outside the Yucatan: one on each side of Chuck Greene's motorcycle trailer, and one next to the SUV. Alternatively, you can buy this weapon at Tinkerbox (N103), the pawn shop in Silver Strip across from the SUV, for $40,000.

Tesla Ball: Bingo Ball Cage + Battery. There is one Bingo Ball Cage located in One Little duck Bingo (N102 in Silver Strip). A Battery can be found in the nearby maintenance room next to Tinkerbox (N103), or in the maintenance room next to the save point in Fortune Park. Alternatively, you can buy this weapon at Tinkerbox (N103), the pawn shop in Silver Strip across from the SUV, for $35,000.

Zap N' Shine: combine Floor Buffer + Electric Prod. Both can be found at the maintenance room near the tiger pen in Yucatan Casino.

Electric Crusher: combine Sledge Hammer + Battery. The Yucatan Casino has a few Sledge Hammers: next to the maintenance room, upper platform nearest entrance to Palisades Mall, and upper platform near Food Court entrance. See Tesla Ball entry for Battery.

Boomstick: combine Pitchfork + Shotgun. The best place for Pitchforks is entrance to Wild west Grill House (F101 in the Food Court) as there are two there; bring the shotguns here and make them in the nearby maintenance room, re-enter area for more Pitchforks. Another Pitchfork can be found in the tiger pen in Yucatan Casino, and outside Luaii Wauwii (N105 Silver Strip). There are four Shotguns in High-Noon Shooting Range (P218 Palisades Mall)

Blambow: combine Bow and Arrow + Dynamite. Bow and Arrows and Dynamite can be found in the Food Court, on the upper platform. Climb up next to Lombardi's (F104). More Dynamite can be found in the maintenance room. Bow and Arrows can also be found in The Chieftain's Hut (R113 in Royal Flush Plaza).

KILLING RELATED CHALLENGES

For most of the killing related challenges, the best weapon I could recommend is the Super BFG. The Plate Launcher is also a good weapon, and is necessary for Chop Suey. Queens may also be useful, but I didn't use any.

Rooftop Massacre

Kill as many Zombies as you can in 30 seconds!

40 kills: $20,000

Just use a good weapon like Super BFG, Plate Launcher, or Rocket Launcher.

Rumble in the Jungle

Kill as many zombies as you can in 20 seconds!

50 kills: $30,000

Similar to Rooftop Massacre. Recommend using Rocket Launcher. Alternatives: Plate Launcher, Hail Mary's, or even plant Remote Mines before hand.

Murder on the High Seas

Kill as many zombies as you can in 2 minutes!

200 kills: $40,000

Recommend Super BFGs. I was not able to do this with the Plate Launcher.

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lNH1FgrjR60]Murder on the High Seas Challenge (Dead Rising 2: Off the Record) - YouTube[/ame]

Double Trouble

Defeat the twins as quickly as possible!

01:00: $45,000

This one seems hard, but really isn't. I did it in single player with just Quick Step and my trusty spiked bat. Also, if you're having trouble, you can setup Freedom Bears prior to activating the challenge. You can make one in the Yucatan, so if you carry one in, you can setup two. In coop, you can setup three Freedom Bears if each of you are carrying one in. Use your favourite weapon (bat, shotgun, katana, or whatever), and remember that you only have to defeat one of the twins to win the challenge, so focus on only one of them (personally, I always go for the one in yellow as she's easier to keep track of).

Rooftop Massacre: Round 2

Kill as many zombies as you can in 1 minute!

200 kills: $60,000

Bring several Super BFGs, and make sure to line-up your shots. Queens may also be helpful.

Killer Rides

Kill as many zombies as you can in 3 minutes using only the killer rides in the Uranus Zone!

80 kills: $60,000

Use the UFO Crash ride, as you have to activate it. It is located on the east side of Uranus Zone between the entrance to Atlantic Casino and U103. Before starting the challenge, remove the barricades from around the ride. Once started, lure zombies to the ride using Firecrackers (an unlimited supply can be found at each fireworks stand, the closest being Rocket's Red Glare (U110) in the Uranus Zone). Also note that the ride kills zombies as it goes up, as well as down.

KILLING RELATED CHALLENGES Continued

Burn the Bodies!

Kill as many zombies as you can using FIRE in 90 seconds!

120 kills: $60,000

Have several Flamethrowers with you, and maybe some Quick Step. Run to any crowds of zombies, hold :square: and sweep with right stick. Easy Peesy. (I'm not sure what other weapons count, if any).

Lightning Never Strikes Twice

Kill as many zombies with ELECTRICITY as you can in 90 seconds!

150 kills: $60,000

This one gave me some trouble. I managed to complete this one by using Tesla Balls, after a few tries. I brought two of them and placed them next to the challenge marker, and used Quick Step. I threw one (hold :square:, or to aim use :l2: then :r2:) then the other, and chased after them, throwing them towards crowds of zombies. They break quickly, and I think there might be a magazine to help with that, but I haven't tested that out yet (if someone knows, leave a comment). You can buy them at the pawn shop across from the SUV (for $35,000), so if you wanted to, you could have a dozen waiting for you, then just toss them all around.

Another method is to use a Zap N' Shine. Race it straight towards the Yucatan Casino, and when it breaks, smash away with an Electric Crusher.

For either method, have a couple Electric Crushers on standby to slam into crowds of zombies (hold :square:).

Also note that the downloadable Cyborg outfit has benefits related to killing with electricity (I don't have this, so I am unsure as to how exactly it helps).

Chop Suey

SLICE as many zombies as you can in 90 seconds!

150 kills: $60,000

For this challenge, you have to use a weapon that will slice a zombie (like Katana, Chainsaw, etc.). The best method is to use the Plate Launcher. Have another one waiting for you for when the first one breaks (you can build two in the area, so if you carry one in, you can have three at a time).

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=swlRTrwKRN0]Chop Suey Challenge (Dead Rising 2: Off the Record) - YouTube[/ame]

KILLING WITH VEHICLES

Extreme Off Road

Kill as many zombies as you can in 2 minutes!

400 kills: $40,000

It may be possible to do this one with your favourite weapons, but I recommend using a Slicecycle (aka Chain Saw Bike). When doing this in coop, it was kinda hard because of slight lag that made driving difficult, but we got it after a few tries. If you leave the challenge zone, you have 5 seconds to get back in.

TIP: in coop, instead of sending your partner all the way to the arena for another bike, drive into the underground just past Luaii Wauwii (N105), and return to respawn all items.

Tunnel of Blood

Kill as many zombies as you can in 4 minutes!

500 kills: $80,000

This one can be hard, as the tunnels aren't very crowded with zombies, and it also depends on your driving skill, as well as sheer luck to have enough zombies in the right places. I was able to get 495 kills using a Slicecycle on the first try. Then I saw a youtube video (that is now deleted) where the player used the SUV, recommended to drive back into the inner tunnels at some point, as it's more crowded, and finished with close to 600 kills. I could barely get 400 kills with the SUV after several tries, so I went back to using the Slicecycle. I stayed on the outer edges (did not re-enter the inner tunnels) and focused on maintaining speed, and managed to finish this challenge no problem.

RACES

All the races are pretty easy if you're wearing the Ninja Outfit, and using Quick Step. Make a dry run first to make sure you know where you're going.

Balloon Man

Get to the balloon over the giant craps table as fast as you can!

00:40: $12,000

This one is pretty easy as well, just stop at the very end and take your time to jump onto the balloon. If you're not sure where you're going: climb the telephone booth outside Players (R213), then onto an upper platform and continue forward. After you jump onto the platform with the broken railing, you need to jump onto the platform behind and above you.

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bCVgCr_3xt4]Balloon Man Challenge (Dead Rising 2: Off the Record) - YouTube[/ame]

Rule #1

Get to the ledge as fast as you can!

01:00: $14,000

Run straight to Bennie Jack's BBQ Shack (A101), avoiding zombies as you go. The only tricky part is crossing the light fixtures from the second floor. If using Quick Step, you should have plenty of time to go slowly here. The zombies on the lights may pose a problem, but if you carry a Super BFG, one shot before jumping onto the first light should knock them down.

Ijiek Motors Presents...

Get to the Yucatan Entrance as fast as you can!

00:45: $15,000

Simply jump on the motorcycle and drive! In coop, one player can get the other motorcycle from next to the Yucatan Casino. The distance is a little shorter if you stick to the left side of the strip, but beware the guys pushing a wheelchair and grey janitor bin thingy.

Scaffolding Shuffle

Get to the top of the scaffolding in the middle of the South Plaza as fast as you can!

00:45: $25,000

It can be tricky jumping onto the scaffolding. The only advice I can give is jump sooner than you would expect (hit :cross: at least a metre away from a platform). When you get to the top of the scaffolding, take your time on the last bit walking over the plank, it's really easy to fall off.

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kd-yttNSjWQ]Scaffolding Shuffle Challenge (Dead Rising 2: Off the Record) - YouTube[/ame]

Fast Food

Get to the awning over the Speedy Expresso as fast as you can!

01:05: $25,000

This one is also easy using Quick Step. If you want to though, drive the sportscar in from Royal Flush Plaza, or use the Moosehead.

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lRBpgFN0iIU]Fast Food Challenge (Dead Rising 2: Off the Record) - YouTube[/ame]

Robot Race

Get to the awning under the giant robot statue as fast as you can!

00:50: $25,000

Apparently, some people have difficulty finding where the finish is, or how to get to it. You need to enter Galactic Experience (marked as "Coming Soon!" on the south part of the map, between U106 and U108). Jump out the second floor, and go right.

You can drive a motorcycle into this area from the strip, and have it waiting for when you start the challenge. But really, this isn't necessary, as you have plenty of time if using Quick Step.

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T1xEsJdAwSQ]Robot Race Challenge (Dead Rising 2: Off the Record) - YouTube[/ame]

Tunnel Vision

Get to the Fortune City Loading Bay as fast as you can!

00:40: $25,000

I recommend using a Slicecycle; you can drive it into the tunnels from Silver Strip, past Luaii Wauwii (N105). This one is also easy, as long as you don't crash you bike. Lag may be a problem if doing this in coop, and may take a few tries.

EARNING PP WITH KILLS

To get alot of PP while killing, use the Boomstick. Run to a crowd of zombies and use the heavy attack (hold :square:. Note that you cannot use the heavy attack until you unlocked the Boomstick's combo card, obtained by getting gold on the first challenge). After the third shotgun blast during the killing animation, hold :square: again and you will automatically start killing another zombie if there is one in range. You should also carry the 3 Combat Magazines in your inventory, located at Luaii Wauwii (N105 in Silver Strip), rear patio bar; Stan's Large Print Books & Mags (P206 in Palisades Mall), inside to the right, and; Slot Ranch Casino's Cashier and Vault Room, on a couch. I also tried Horror Magazines, but they seemed to not make a difference.

Silver Strip Smackdown

Gain as much PP as you can in 60 seconds!

30000PP: $20,000

See above for Boomstick and Magazine method.

Pawned Prestige

Get as much PP as you can in 2 minutes!

20000 PP: $40,000

See above for Boomstick and Magazine method.

Killing Floor

Gain as much PP as you can in 3 minutes while remaining on the second floor!

35000 PP: $60,000

Nothing special here, just stay on the second floor. See above for Boomstick and Magazine method.

Do Not Try This At Home

Get as much PP as you can in 3 minutes!

40000 PP: $40,000

See above for Boomstick and Magazine method.

EARNING PP WITH PHOTOGRAPHY

To get more PP with photography, carry the two Photography Magazines. They are located in the First Aid Station next to the UFO Crash ride in Uranus Zone(see “Killer Rides” for location), and in Robsaka Mobile (P217 in Palisades Mall). Also get the Erotica Magazine (Slot Ranch Casino, men's washroom open stall).

Shutter Bug

Get as much PP from photos as you can in 60 seconds! Only PP gained from photos will count!

4500 PP

$10,000

In Uranus Zone, there is a small souvenir kiosk that you can use to get the Adult Content tophy (see first video). With the magazines, you should get a few thousand PP; take another photo and you'll get less PP, but still alot. If you still need PP, you can also then use the UFO Crash ride (see “Killer Rides” description) and take a photo (see second video).

GATHERING ZOMBIES

These two are pretty easy. Just use Zombait. To make Zombait there are several combinations, but the easiest for me to remember is to combine Jellybeans + Jellybeans. Go to the Food Court: unlimited Jellybeans in Lombardi's (F104), and a blender in Rojo Diablo Mexican Restaurant (F106). You might have problems if you're wearing the Ninja costume, so change clothes.

Party Hard

Lure as many zombies onto the rock path in 1 minute!

25 zombies: $60,000

I've seen videos of people using Firecrackers to lure zombies in, but I've had no luck at all using this method. Zombait worked like a charm! Just run out into the hordes, and get them to follow you back. Stick to one side, but if in coop, split up and each take a side.

Crowd Pleaser

Gather as many zombies as you can in front of the stage in 1 minute!

25 zombies: $40,000

If in single player, you can just stand at the edge of the stage and hold :left: to use the "Celebrate" skill which attracts zombies (can't remember at which level it's unlocked). In coop, you may have to use Zombait.

MISCELLANEOUS

Stiff Back

Collect as many massagers as you can in 3 minutes, and bring them back to [the] challenge kiosk!

40 Massagers: $60,000

This one is a real pain in the ass! It took me several tries to get, and is one of the few I have yet to try in coop (so it may be easier in coop).

My advice is to start the challenge, and take your time finding out where the Massagers spawn. Do it several times, so you have the locations down pat. When you're ready to start, fill your inventory before hand, and drop them all right away. Then, get the closest ones on your first trip out (in and on the Grotto), then venture out further.

Also, drink a Quick Step before starting the challenge, and have a pile of Quick Steps on top of the Grotto, and drink one before heading out again (the Juice Boost magazine might be useful here, but I didn't use it as it will probably complicate things). Upon returning from your second last trip, you'll probably only need 4 or 5 more Massagers, so don't drop them all as it wastes time, just make sure to leave enough empty slots to get the last 4 or 5. While you're standing in the marked location on top of the Grotto, it counts the ones that you have in your inventory, so you don't need to drop the last batch.

Thirst Quencher

Drink as much alcohol as you can in 3 minutes

30 drinks: $60,000

Wear the complete Sports Fan Outfit (see http://www.ps3trophies.org/forum/dead-rising-2-off-record/130269-unlockable-special-game-outfits.html by user “BTHR Zero X”) so that you won't get sick from drinking. Load up your inventory with booze and drink those first. Then gather up booze from the bar, and the two rooms on either side of the casino.

Mad About Hats

Put as many masks on zombies as you can in 90 seconds!

25 masks: $50,000

Use the unlimited supply of Lizard Masks found in Ye Olde Toybox (R107), and load up your inventory before starting. I recommend dringking a Quick Step before starting. Place masks on the closest zombies; don't necessarily go for crowds. You can even leave piles of masks anywhere to save time from running back to shop, but you probably won't need to.

No Thanks, I'll Stand...

Smash as many chairs as you can in 90 seconds!

75 Chairs: $50,000

This is another difficult one. I was able to get this done using Hail Mary's. They have a large blast radius, so aim for the floor between rows of chairs, or hit the banks of slot machines and it should destroy the chairs on both sides. Other weapons to use are Blambows, grenades, or the Blitzkrieg (see video). I did not have any luck using the Blitzkrieg, though I wasn't using the Soldier Outfit (see http://www.ps3trophies.org/forum/dead-rising-2-off-record/130269-unlockable-special-game-outfits.html by user “BTHR Zero X”) which probably would have helped.

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=87G4V6F7MLw]No Thanks, I'll Stand... Challenge (Dead Rising 2: Off the Record) - YouTube[/ame]

One Armed Bandit

Collect as much money as you can in 2 minutes!

$70000: $25,000

This one is easy. Grab the two Gambling Magazines, one from Bennie Jack's BBQ Shack (A101 Americana Casino) second floor, and the top of the Grotto in Palisades Mall. The third Gambling Magazine is not available in Sandbox Mode. Right around the corner from the challenge marker is a giant video slot machine. Bet max $1,000 continuously, and you should have no problem hitting your target.

An alternative is to collect money cases and smash them open to collect the money (though this seems rather a waste of time).

I played with some Japanese Dude today and he showed me a REALLY easy way to destroy all chairs:

Get a PARASOL and hold Square, you can run through all the chairs and destroy them with 1 hit. MUCH easier than the other methods.

Also,

if you have trouble with getting PP, get some HAIL MARRY (Football + Grenade) or directly buy them from the Moes (the 1st looter shop across americana). They are ridiculous and get insane amounts of PP.

This. Hail Mary's are by far the quickest and easiest way i've found to do the PP challenges and a lot of the kill-related challenges. They're cheap (15-20k each) to buy and are useful in most challenges you'll come across. There are also an infinite supply of grenades and footballs in palisades mall if you want to make them instead, though if you have the money it's quicker to buy them. An added benefit of making them is that the area you make them is right beside the elevator down to get the BFG, so you can make Hail Mary's and BFG's in the same time frame.

Another tip i'd add for the chair challenge which I don't think has been mentioned much (maybe nobody had a problem with it as much as I did?): Guns like the lmg and assault rifle take out a chair in a single bullet. If you go in with a few hail mary's and an lmg/ a couple of assault rifles you should do it first time no problem. I couldn't get the parasol or blitzkreig method to work, or 11 hail mary's, so I brought 10 hail mary's and an assault rifle from the pawn shop and it worked a charm :).

Thanks for this guide, was really helpful! :) Should get a sticky in my opinion but I guess it doesn't really matter since there aren't many posts in this forum.

Also, my co-op buddy and I found way to smash 100 chairs with rather little effort. When the challenge started we went our separate way and just jumped on every chair we found, and they would break. We got 99 on our first try then 105 I think. Much more convenient than scavenging for parts for the Blitzkrieg and the other weapons mentioned then go for the chairs.

On the part about the parasol, it would be even easier to use the burning skull. Longer duration + burning effect on any zombies you may run into
