Introduction

The second instalment of the Dead Island series is here, Dead Island: Riptide. They thought they had escaped the terrors of Banoi, but they are about to do it all again in a new setting. The game is similar to the first one in terms of the trophy list except this time there are only 36 of them and about 10 or so are story related. The platinum is fairly easy but with most RPGs, time consuming. The gameplay is relatively unchanged, so if you had no problems with the original you should be fine with this.

You have to collect a total of 61 collectibles, these consist of postcards, secret files, recordings and island guides. Unfortunately these can glitch on you, see the guide for more information. You also have to kill 13 named zombies in each of the dead zones for the Hunter-Seeker trophy. As for the other trophies, you have to complete all 27 main missions in co-op mode. This might sound bad at first but if you just focus on the co-op missions and you have good weapons, it should take about 6hrs to do. Unfortunately, connectivity can still be a slight issue like the first game. The most time-consuming trophy is completing all 80 quests. If you need more help, refer to that trophy for a complete list.

Walkthrough

Step 1: Complete the game up to the final main quest 'With the Tide'. Complete every side quest too.

For this step, complete all of the quests up to the point of no return which is when you have to board the boat after killing the final boss. If you played Dead Island it'd also be a good idea to import your character to save time later. As you are playing make sure to accept any side request you come across, you can complete them now or later if you wish. If you go past the point of no return, you may have to do the bulk of the game to unlock some of the side quests again. Don't worry about passing it on accident, you will asked be for confirmation before doing so. You may start with co-op if you wish, eliminating the third step, but since you need a lot of XP to level 70, you may as well do them separately. Also, people have reported some collectables and/or quests not registering correctly when starting with co-op, so it is a good idea to go it alone first. If you do wish to play in co-op to begin with, make sure the other people are in your game at all times when doing things, and check periodically whether quests and collectibles align.

You may also want to try and get kills with charge and throwing kills to reduce the grind later.

Step 2: Collectibles, miscellaneous trophies and finishing the quest 'With the Tide'.

Next go back to the island and get the collectibles, any side missions you may have missed and any of the kill related miscellaneous trophies. When you are absolutely sure you have done everything there is to do, feel free to finish the last mission. The other thing you want to do in this step is to clear up the miscellaneous trophies. There are only a couple and all are fairly simple to do. All trophies where you must kill X enemies in a certain way can be tracked through :start:. Refer to the guide for more info.

Step 3: Complete all main missions in co-op (if needed).

Next find a co-op partner and complete the main quests with them. Side quests can be skipped so this shouldn't take too long, especially if you know what to do. Try to stick with the same character to help towards level 70. Also make sure to get the other co-op trophy while playing which is for marking 100 zombies that your partner kills. Please visit the thread below for co-op partners:

Co-Op Partners Thread (Read First Post!) - PlaystationTrophies.org

Step 4: Clean up

Missed out on a collectible trophy? Didn't get a certain miscellaneous trophy? Well now is the time to go back and clean up. The trophy you are probably missing is the one for reaching level 70 which without exploits takes a very long time to reach. By now you should have the platinum. Congrats!

Finish all quests in the game

There are a total of 80 quests needed for this trophy. You need to do all the Main quests and the side quests. Team quests are not needed for this, neither are Continuous quests. On PS4, I obtained this before ending the game, while on PS3 I had to finish the game. Thus on PS3 you should be on 79 before you finish, and on PS4 you shouldn't finish the game until you have got this trophy. If you are unsure, back up your save and reload it if the trophy doesn't pop, and look for a side quest you may be missing. You can find these quests with a ! when you are nearby them. You should activate any you find while playing the story. They are divided as the following; 29 main quests and 51 side quests - 12 of these are for killing the champion zombies (see Hunter-Seeker). Refer to the thread below for a complete list of all the missions, credit to BlackDevil990.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1590/6A7.jpg Obtain level 50 (S)

Obtain level 50

This is self-explanatory. If you played Dead Island, it is possible to import your character, so you can start at the level you left off. If you had a level 50 character and decide to use it, you will get this trophy after killing your first zombie. Otherwise, please see 'Obtain level 70' for tips, tricks and glitches for levelling up in the game.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1590/742.jpg Obtain level 70 (G)

Obtain level 70

To reach level 70 you'll need 24,396,500 XP. That is a lot, and the time taken depends on your level in the original Dead Island (if you import the save), but either way it is a grind.

Leveling Tips:

Kill as many enemies as possible. It may be tempting to run past them to save time and weapons, but you'll need all the XP you can get. Special zombies such as thugs, floaters etc give you lots of XP.

Continuous events are another way to get XP quick. They never end so you can give as many objects to the quest givers you can get. The best one is the one in Halai, where you need to get painkillers. You can either farm these by fast travelling between the lab and the Marina or by throwing all the ones you have on the floor and killing yourself. You should get them back in your inventory, but they'll still be on the floor, for double the painkillers. This works with any continuous quest, such as electronic scrap, food cans or blades.

The challenges are helpful too with a bit of XP, so look out for those as you play.

The final way is to just keep completing quests and then starting a new game with new game plus and completing the majority of the quests again. This is time-consuming and will make the time to platinum longer. Credit to Deathmule for the video:

Install a total of 5 barricades during hub defense

You can get this during the very first hub defence game which occurs shortly after the prologue. All you have to do is install the 5 fences and wait for the zombies to start appearing on the mini-map. Now simply take the fence away with :square: and place it back again. This will count towards the 5. Repeat with the other 5 for the trophy.

Don't worry if you missed the trophy, you can get it later on during the water pump or Ferry hub defence missions.

Complete all the main quests cooperatively with any number of partners

There are a total of 28 main quests that you need to complete in co-op mode. The first mission is single player only so you do not need to do that one. You don't have to do them with the same person or people, as long as you finish all the quests with another person. However it is advised you stick with one person to keep track of what you have done. If you need a co-op partner please visit the thread below:

Find all collectibles

GLITCH WARNING: There is a possibility a collectible might glitch on you, meaning that you may have to start a new game to get it. It is advised to make a backup just in case, especially when collecting in Henderson.

There are a total of 61 collectibles in the game; here is a breakdown of them, click on them to link to a guide:

You can check how many you have and which ones you are missing by going to your inventory in the :select: menu. From here use :r2: and :l2: to scroll through the options until you see the 'Collectibles' section. Every collectible is numbered so it is easy to tell which ones you are missing.

I advise you go for the trophy once you reach the point of no return (With the Tides) as from this point you'll have access to every part of the map. Make sure you don't complete the game though as you can't go back, you'll have to start a new game+. Collectibles carry over between playthroughs. The collectible will save as soon as you pick it up, even if you die or load the last checkpoint. Refer to the posts linked below for the locations of all 61:

Kill the Twins

The twins are located at the Pinai Ferry Station (you will reach it after travelling through the tunnels). The first twin is on the beach, which you will come across as you travel towards the ferry station. He will come running at you as soon as you step on the beach. The second twin is slightly harder to find. From the beach head towards the ferry station, you will see a pickup truck on top of a sign about halfway towards the station. All you have to do is climb the ladder behind the sign, the other twin will burst out of the workshop below after climbing the ladder.

Rescue 20 NPCs that have been grabbed by monsters

During hub defences and some missions involving your group, some NPCs fighting with you may get grabbed by a zombie. A circle will appear on the screen identifying when this happens and where. To rescue them, you only need to hit the zombie once so they release the NPC. You will need to do this 20 times for the trophy. As long as you are saving anyone who gets grabbed, you should almost definitely get this through story progression. If you want to get it earlier, purposely don't kill zombies so they grab more people. Additional info by Paradigmatica:

I realized at Santa Maria Mission there is an NPC John. What you have to do is lure 1 or 2 zombies through the arch entrance where John is and run up the stairs and wait for him to grapple with a zombie.

You won't see a circle on your map but you will see them dancing. Just kill the zombie and you will get an NPC save. It is tricky to lure them in.. just go out in the water (or surrounding area) there should be 3 zombies out there and slowly coax them in towards poor John.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1590/B24.jpg The Hurt Mine Locker (B)

Kill 10 monsters with one mine

Note: The trophy description is extremely misleading. Firstly, it doesn't have to be one mine. Secondly, the zombie doesn't have to be alive. This will work on dead zombies too.

This trophy can be achieved pretty much anywhere where there are a lot of zombies. Examples would be the Pinai ferry station or the streets in Henderson. From here just gather around 10 zombies and kill them all in a small area so the bodies are all close together. Bait also helps with this. Now just throw a mine on those 10 dead zombies and wait for a live zombie to set the mine off. You can use more than 1 mine if you like, it won't affect the trophy.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1590/988.jpg Hurler (B)

Kill 100 monsters with thrown melee weapons

If you're anything like us, you will only have gotten a couple of kills from throwing melee weapons by the time you finish the game. The best character for this is Logan as he has skills which increase damage etc when throwing weapons and his fury is throwing. It can be done with any character though. What you want to do is lower a zombie's health until it has about 1/5 left. Now, simply throw any melee weapon at it using :l1: then :r1: when locked on and hopefully it will die (If the melee weapon was sharp or had a high damage ratio). High damaging axes are probably the best. Repeat 100 times for the trophy. Be careful if you throw a blunt weapon, it is easy to lose it and kills didn't always count with thrown blunt kills. Use a sharp weapon to be safe.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1590/4DE.jpg BrainLess (B)

Kill 50 monsters by smashing, decapitating or shooting them in the head

You will get this just by playing the game more than likely. The easiest way I have found is to use a gun and just aim at the zombies head. It will blow the zombies head off almost every time.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1590/E9B.jpg Bully (B)

Kill 100 monsters with a kick

This is an easy trophy once you unlock the skill to stomp in the center of the combat skill tree. What you want to do is do a jump kick (run and press :l2: while in the air) on a normal zombie. This will knock them over every time. Now all you need to do is wait until you see the :l2: prompt on the zombies head, press it and you will smash the zombie's head with your foot. This is an insta-kill every time. Repeat on 100 zombies for the trophy.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1590/B05.jpg Jetboat (G)

Kill 100 monsters using the boat's speed boost

You unlock the boat fairly early in the game if your following the main story quests. This is a very easy gold trophy and shouldn't take more than half an hour to achieve. What you want to do is drive the boat along all the rivers you can use so you can kill the most amount of zombies. To kill zombies with the boat all you have to do is hold down :cross: to boost the boat. Anything you hit while boosting will die every time until around level 55, including special zombies.

Once you have cleared all the rivers simply press :start:, load last checkpoint. This will respawn all the zombies in the river and you will keep your stats.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1590/503.jpg Juggernaut (B)

Kill 100 enemies using charge attacks

Charge attacks are an unlockable skill in this game, found early in the combat tree. When unlocked, equip any weapon and sprint, then press :triangle:. You will launch forward striking any zombies in front of you. Be careful not to hold triangle, as you may drop your weapon and it is possible to lose it! Weaken your enemies first to make sure you only need to charge once, and use a powerful weapon. It hardly ever kills the zombie so make sure you have the skill fully upgraded.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1590/B2F.jpg Better than the arm (S)

Kill 25 monsters with a chainsaw

Chainsaws can be found in two ways. You can find them at random, but this is a rarity. The other way is guaranteed, one of the bosses right before the point of no return carries one, and can be picked up after it is defeated. Once you've obtained one, proceed to kill 25 enemies with it. Aim for the head and kills should come easily. However, the chainsaw drains rather quickly when held as your current weapon, so to save it only hold it when you are killing zombies.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1590/F85.jpg It's an Order (B)

Mark 100 opponents which were then killed by your co-op partners

To mark a zombie, press :left: on it while aiming your cursors at it, then get your co-op partner to kill that zombie. Repeat on 99 more zombies to unlock this. The easiest way to do this is to just use a car. Have the person getting the trophy in the passenger seat marking the zombies and the other player running them over. This does not work in boats, For co-op partners please visit the thread below:

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1590/3B3.jpg King among Kings (S)

Kill special enemies: Grenadier, Thug, Wrestler, Infected, Suicider, Screamer, Butcher, Floater.

This is almost unmissable, as you will encounter all of these enemies while playing through the main quests and the only way to miss it is to let others kill them in hub defence. Grenadier, Wrestlers and Screamers are new enemies types, while the rest return from the original game. You should find the final enemy you need, Screamer, at the end of the Ferry hub defence.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1590/4DC.jpg Hunter-Seeker (G)

Find and kill all named champion monsters located in dead zones

There are a total of 13 named champion zombies in the game, each of them are found in their own area (Dead Zones). Here is a list of all 13 of them, refer to the thread or video below for how to find each one. 6 of them are in the Flooded Jungle and the rest are found in Henderson.

  • Deathbone
  • Deathtrap
  • Quickdeath
  • Ogre (Story related)
  • The Undying
  • Killer
  • Walking Carcass
  • Skullcrusher
  • Blackheart
  • Blindspot
  • The Scourge

FAQ

Q. I missed a couple, how I can check which ones I have and which ones I don't have?

A. Go to your inventory by pressing :select:. From here you want to press either :r2: or :l2: to scroll through the inventory options. Eventually you will reach the 'Collectibles' tab. In here you will find all the collectibles you have found. They are numbered so it's easy to identify which ones you are missing.

Q. I have them all, even checked the collectible list and even that confirms I have them all. My trophy tracker however says I'm missing one. What gives?

A. There have been a few cases where this has happened, luckily there is a workaround.

  1. Identify which collectible type has glitched on you (Most likely a file or a recording) through the pause menu.
  2. Start a new save with a new character.
  3. Collect all of those collectibles again.

It's a real pain to have to do this as it basically means reaching Henderson which takes about 5hrs game time. It saves having to collect all 61 collectibles again though. If you're lucky you'll pick up the one that has glitched on you early on and earn the trophy. To be on the safe side, check your trophy tracker whenever you pick up a collectible.

Q. Do they carry over between saves?

A. Yes they do. If you have a save with Sam B and a save with Logan it will remember your stats over both of them. So you could pick up the first 5 with Sam B and they rest with Logan, the trophy will still unlock. If you start a new game + though with the same character as you had in your last save, collectibles won't appear where you have picked one up. Only the ones you haven't picked up will show.

Secret files Part 3

In order to get this file you must first get the 'White Line' quest off of Bruce in the Halai village. He is located in the northern most shack. Once you accept the quest, follow the map marker to get to the drug dealer's house. Once in the house interact with the panel on the far wall to enter the basement. The file is down here in a shelf.

Guide Book Locations

Palanai Island Guide #1

This is kind of tricky to explain the location but it is located on the main road in the flooded jungle. From paradise follow the road down and you'll see a blue car next to a wooden canopy. The guide-book is on the bench here.

Palanai Island Guide #2

From the last guide-book continue down the road until you reach a small settlement with a burnt out yellow car and a seating area. The guide-book is sitting in the left corner of this seating area.

Palanai Island Guide #3

Continue up the main road and you'll eventually pass a big wooden building on your right. Slightly ahead of this you will see two umbrellas on your left. The guide-book is on the table by these umbrellas.

Palanai Island Guide #4

Just ahead of the last one you will see a set of stairs directly in front of you leading up to a seating area. You want to head up these stairs. Next to this area is also a dead zone. The guide-book is on the center bench.

This guide-book is located at the very top of the map, on the left hand side. There is a man called Alfred standing on top of a caravan here. Inside this caravan is the guide-book lying on the floor.

Palanai Island Guide #6

This guide-book page is located on the far right of the map in a place called Marik's Marina. In this area is a sign that says 'Marik' with a picture of a fish. To the left of this sign is a single set of stairs. Go up these stairs and the guide-book is sitting on the table.

Palanai Island Guide #7

Exit Marik's Marina and head back down the road. When you reach the intersection head right instead of left. You'll pass through a flooded road. Shortly after exiting this road you'll see a workbench in a shed to your right. Just ahead of this shed is a canopy, the guide-book is on a bench under it.

Palanai Island Guide #8

In the center of the map is a grey rectangle with three circles attached to it, in the game this is a wooden walkway. Right next to this is an area with a yellow tent and a burnt out car. By the sleeping bags you'll find the guidebook on the floor.

Palanai Island Guide #9

This is located in the dead zone in Halai Village. It's located in the back area of the dead zone which has all the pick ups in it. Look on top of the crates on the right hand side of the room and you'll see the guide-book.

Fast travel to the Pinai Ferry Station and then enter the tunnels. As soon as you enter the tunnels look to your right and you'll see the guide-book in the corner.

The guide-book is located on one of the market stands right by a ladder.

Palanai Island Guide #14

Head out of the window in the cinema and reach the street level. From here look directly to your right and you'll see an area that is blocked by some tables and chairs. Jump over this and you'll see the guide-book on the table at the end.

Palanai Island Guide #15

This one is a little tricky to explain, but the landmark is called 'Sea Market' which is in the southern area of Henderson. The guide-book is on top of a metal cupboard / stand on the north-east side of the market.

Palanai Island Guide #16

On the far left of the town is a long walkway with benches, it is located right next to the Doctors Clinic. The guide-book is on a bench along this walkway.

The third recording is located at the very top of the map next to the quest giver Miya. The recording is on bench in this small camp.

Voice Recording #5

In the Halai village there is a part that sticks out into the sea. On this part there is a house that sticks out the most to the north on that part, the recording is there. You want to climb the ladder from the sea to reach it.

Voice Recording #6

The sixth recording is located in the Research Lab. From the entrance to it you don't want to go towards Kessler, instead take the left path. Be careful going down here as it is littered with mines. At the bottom you'll see a WW2 looking building with supplies and stuff in it. In here go up the ladder and you'll see the recording.

Voice Recording #7

This recording is located at the Pinai Ferry Station. From the actual ferry station head left and you'll see a petrol station, near here is a workshop type building which says "Don't open, dead inside." At the back right of this room the recording is sitting on a shelf.

From the fort, head across the bridge and you'll see a semi-circle area on the map. The recording is in this area on a table.

Voice Recording #10

The final recording is located at the Military Base. Instead of going towards the base itself, go the other way where the named wrestler is. In this area there are two tents, a supply one and a medical one. The recording is located in the supply tent on a metal shelf.

I'm not sure if this is helpful but if people buy the guide book it's WAY off on the collectibles and it only has 60 instead of 61. They wanna use your videos for collectibles over the guide book ( found this out the hard way). Very nice guide also!

Also that mine trophy took 2 mines for me and I got the trophy. Dropped one off the roof.. Didn't get it , about 30 seconds later there was a couple more zombies below me and I just threw one for the hell of it and it popped after only killing a couple on the second mine.

I would check out this thread: http://www.ps3trophies.org/forum/dead-island-riptide/196673-possible-multiple-trophy-glitch.html as it looks like there is a possible problem with 2 of the trophies.

Yeah, I read about that and I also saw something about it on the sister site. If it happens to anybody else we'll add something in :)

Luckily it looks like there's an easy solution to fix it if it does glitch.

Yeah, that was me..

Someone else had an issue with one of the recordings doing the same thing.. luckily for me I had a really good idea of where it messed up and it was early in the game.. New game with a new character and it popped both as soon as I picked up the one it said I was missing..

For the King among Kings (S) If the partner you are playing with killed the Wrestler when you first encounter it does the wrestler re spawn at that location if you quit the game or will you encounter more in the Henderson City? He's the only one I need for the trophy and my partner killed him and got the trophy.

There should be a few to kill.

@the glitch, since it doesn't seem to be specific to one type of collectible, ill just add a note to the trophy for completing them all

I got it just now, 60/61 with 61 items in my inventory. My Angela tape #10 doesn't have an image so I assume it's that one that got bugged, but be damned if I'm replaying half the game on a new game to get that one item again. Shelving until patched :(

What a pain in the ass, you think deep silver would have learnt something from the first game.

But yeah, we'll add a warning in and a workaround. Is it easy enough to identify which one has glitched?

The only reason I knew which one of mine was missing was when I picked up Secret File 4 it said I had collected 3/9 when I knew that was the 4th I picked up, all showed in my inventory..

So in my case, no.. nothing out of the ordinary.. I was just lucky enough to catch it and have a progress tile come up to tip me off..
