Introduction

From the developers of the famous Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3 and Persona 4 series comes Catherine, the adult themed, romantic-horror, and puzzler by Atlus USA. First released in Japan early in 2011, the truth is this game is nothing like you've played before. As the game's packaging suggest an adult theme, it comes with that along with a mature narrative that explores all the complex relationships and fidelity between men and women. Vincent, whom is the main character is a 32-year old systems engineer and has to deal with real-life serious decisions. You initially learn he is currently dating Katherine, a 32-year old office manager who wants to marry him. Only that he is not ready to commit. But in a sweep of one evening, he gets seduced by a younger blonde beauty, coincidentally named Catherine. The bulk of the game play takes place in Vincent's nightmares. As each nightmare is a block-based puzzle. Blocks can be arranged to move, and climb up to the top of each level to survive the horror and terror of blocks below you falling, it is a race to salvation and the end the nightmare. But only for that night! In-between these nightmares, choices will need to be made during the day that will affect his relationships with those around him. The dating-sim part includes phone text messaging, talking to friends, having drinks at a bar, and making life changing decisions that could affect the feelings of those around him.

Trophy-wise, getting a sizable percentage of the trophies is not entirely difficult, as the game includes several difficulty modes. Including a easy mode to get through the Golden Playhouse, the game's story mode. The extreme difficulty factor of Catherine is the precision, patience, and cognitive skills to master each nightmare stage and earn Gold Prizes on hard difficulty. Along with clearing the Babel stages, where the puzzles are completely random and will put all the skills you are taught to the true endurance test. Challenging to say the least, but a fun one to take on!

Roadmap

Step 1: Playthrough the Golden Playhouse on Normal difficulty, staying close to neutral as possible until day 5.

This will be your first run in the golden playhouse which is the story mode of Catherine. In this playthrough you progress through all 9 days of nightmare stages, help all the patrons, drink and listen to all alcohol-related trivia. There are seven trivia facts for each drink to listen to, and you only can listen to one per-day, per-drink. Interacting with all patrons consists of talking to each one, on each-day and giving them positive answers. Including on-landings between stages as they will be in an alternate form. These tasks make up the missable trophies that you will need to be aware of each day while playing through the Golden Playhouse. Use the following guides to help you during your playthrough:

As you progress through nightmare stages, there will plenty of opportunities to unlock all the block-related trophies. Many of these can come through natural game play, but there are a few that you might have to improvise to perform the tasks required. If you somehow miss or mess up an opportunity, you can always use :start: and replay the level. Of course you can also always use your cell phone and going to AWARDS to stage select and replay any stage for these trophies. Follow the trophy guide for the specific areas and strategies to unlock the following trophies:

(B)

Push it to the Limit!

(B)
Have an Ice Day

(B)
Bomberlamb

(B)
I Can Fly!

(B)
Take Your Time

Ideally, you will want to say close to neutral karma as possible when appropriate. The reasons for playing on normal difficulty is to prepare you for puzzles on hard difficulty. It is not recommended to start out on easy difficulty as it does not really prepare you for that difficulty level. You also cannot unlock the babel stages unless you gold prize the stages on normal or hard. Getting Gold Prizes will shorten the time it takes during clean-up runs, by allowing you to "skip" the level in subsequent runs which will speed up the time to get every ending instead of replaying the stages several more times.

Once you get to Day 5 make an additional save as your “branch off” point. From here you can decide to stay neutral, or progress and go all-in towards Chaos or Law karma. As there will more than enough options to get to 100% in either direction if you select the optimal decisions during interactions, and during text message replies. Follow the trophy guide for details on the following missable trophies so you do not miss them in your playthrough. By doing so, at the end of day 8 you will unlock the following trophies:

(B)

Read All About It!

(B)
A New Look

(B)
Mother Inferior

(B)
Love is Patient, Love is Kind

(B)
One Last Case

(S)
Everyday Hero

(B)
Text Junkie

(B)
Sake Sensei

(B)
Beer Baron

(B)
Cocktail Connoisseur

(B)
Whisky Wiseman

(B)
You Don't Have To Go Home...

Step 2: Make extra saves to further branch your ending paths on day 9.

On Day 9 you will want to decide which ending path you will want to take depending on where your karma mater is. At this point make a another branching save before starting Stage 9-2. That way you can come back to it to unlock the rest of the endings on that same path you chose earlier. You will also notice some decisions may not require reverting to a save back at 9-2. Follow the trophy guide for the following eight ending trophies on the specific decision options that will need to be taken for your chosen ending based on your karma level:

Chaos

(B)

Nighty Night (Bad Lover)

(B)
Sleepless Nights (Normal Cheater)

(B)
Lord of the Night (True Cheater)

Neutral (Middle of the gauge)

(B)

A Life Without Regrets... (True Freedom)

Law

(B)

Hit the Road, Vincent (Bad Cheater)

(B)
Just Like Old Times (Normal Lover)

(B)
Starting a New Life (True Lover)

(B)
Whatever, Buddy (Normal Freedom)

Step 3: Clean-up the rest of the Golden Playhouse endings, and any missable trophies on Normal (Optional).

At this step, you will have completed a successful playthrough of the Golden Playhouse and unlocked one ending. At this point you can make a decision to go straight to the next step, replay the golden playhouse on hard difficulty, getting gold prizes on each stage, and then following the ending guide to unlock the rest of the endings.

Or if you want to enjoy the rest of the endings as soon as possible, you can revert back to any earlier Stage 9 saves to unlock the rest of the endings. As you will be able to skip through any stage you earned a gold prize in. Gold Prizes will speed-up your clean-up as you will be able to branch and play-though all the endings much faster by pressing :start: and selecting "skip" for that nightmare stage without replaying it again. The choice is yours here, otherwise you can clean-up all the trophies in your hard difficulty play through.

An important note is that Gold Prizes carry over throughout your entire save file for that difficulty you played on. So if you missed any of the patron or drink trophies, simply start a brand-new Golden Playhouse game and skip through cut-scenes and stages. Starting from Day-2, work on those tasks immediately, leave the bar, and then "skip" the nightmare stage. Keep repeating this process until the end of Day 8 which is when those trophies unlock. As wrapping these trophies up will not take a lot of time.

If you have no missable trophies remaining, Simply reload your Day 6 save, make the appropriate karma choices for the ending paths you did not complete earlier, and simply "skip" through the cut-scenes and nightmare stages. Keep repeating this process as needed, and if you want to save more time, once again make any additional saves starting on Day 9 as-needed. By the end of this step you will have unlocked all the endings, and have earned the following trophies:

(B)

True Freedom!

(B)
Nighty Night

(B)
Hit the Road, Vincent

(B)
Just like Old Times

(B)
Sleepless Nights

(B)
Starting a New Life

(B)
Lord of the Night

(B)
Whatever, Buddy

(B)
A Life Without Regrets...

(G)
Dreams Come True

Step 4: Replay the Golden Playhouse and earn Gold Prizes on nightmare stages on Hard difficulty.

This step can be performed anytime during your playthrough. If you followed the roadmap to this point, you can open any Golden Playhouse save and switch the difficulty to HARD by using the :start: menu. You can use your cell phone under AWARDS as a Stage Select and begin working towards getting all Gold Prizes in the levels. As playing through nightmare stages through this method gives you unlimited lives to work with.

Another option is if you want to be able to go through the golden playhouse and clean-up any previous missing trophies. Start a brand new game on hard and complete the Golden Playhouse with Gold Prizes on each stage. One advantage to playing for Golden Prizes through this method over stage select on the cell phone is that you can save your game anytime on the landings, versus the cell phone where have to complete the entire stage in one-sitting. This could be helpful if you feel you cannot Golden Prize stage 9 in one-sitting for example. The only disadvantage to this method is you don't get unlimited lives.

Initially we do not recommend starting the Golden Playhouse on hard difficulty because it is a lot to take in initially, and adding in the extra puzzle difficulty from the get-go will likely lead to frustration. As a new player would not have a full-grasp of all the block mechanics that is required for this difficulty level. Clearing the Golden Playhouse on Normal difficulty, and even going through Rapunzel, should expand your skill-set to make this manageable. If you need help with resolving any hard puzzles solutions, you can refer to video assistance in the guide to help with puzzle solutions as Golden Playhouse is always a set puzzle setup in each stage, and it is also worth noting hard difficulty nightmare stages between the Japanese and North American versions are completely the same. By obtaining Gold Prizes in all levels, at the end of this step you will have earned the following trophy:

(G)

The Golden Child

Step 5: Beat all the stages in Rapunzel.

The Rapunzel arcade game is located in the Stray Sheep Tavern. It is an arcade which is like a retro-version of the block puzzles themselves in the core game. The advantage of waiting to work on these trophies is that during your initial playthrough you only get three credits to use daily on the game. After clearing the Golden Playhouse, this will turn into unlimited credits. There are 128 levels in total (64 levels in each mode, the second is an "Extra" mode.) The game also has separate save states so you can work on this anytime. You initial goal is to get through the first 64 stages and collect all the rosaries (four in each mode, for a total of eight) so you can get the "true" ending. This will continue your trophy progress, and you will also open up the second 64 stages. Refer to the trophy guide for the detail of the following trophies which will be earned at the end of this step:

(B)

Past a Heap of Puzzles

(B)
A Mystery Within a Puzzle

(S)
Legendary Prince

Step 6: Complete all four Babel stages.

This step becomes available immediately as you unlock Babel's Calling, 3 Star-Man, and 5 Star-Man by getting Gold Prizes on Normal or Hard difficulty. Babel is a one or two-player local game mode where in each stage you climb themed towers. The puzzles, or more specially all the block pattern arrangements fall at a random pace. This means there is no absolute solution for each level. While there may be similarities at times, pure skill will be put to the test here. This is considered the final step mainly because of it difficulty, and the final Babel stage, Axis Menaldi, will throw every possible block in the game at you.

As mentioned earlier, Babel is also a 2-player co-op mode. When playing with two players, player one will play as Vincent as the second player will play as Katherine. As both players will be able to conquer Babel together. If you have cleared the Golden Playhouse at this point, you will already understand from a high-level how this mode works with two players. This is important to note because if you have the ability to play 2-player local co-op, this can be an effective way to conquer this mode with somewhat simpler and shorter puzzles. As the amount of steps required to completion is notably shorter than in one-player. For instance, Altar is about 50 steps less than having 150 steps to climb by playing solo. Do consider this opportunity if you have the means to play with another skilled player locally. You can also flip between two-controllers and control both players yourself if you do not have a local partner. By the end of this step, you will have earned the following trophies:

(B)

Altar Conquered

(B)
Menhir Conquered!

(B)
Obelisk Conquered!

(G)
A God is Born!

(P)
Cheers to You!

View all of the endings.

There are 8 possible endings to the game and once you reach the last ending left on your list this will unlock. It is important to note that you must watch or skip each ending all the way past the "Fin" screen so that the game will automatically save that ending as-completed on your save file.

Three endings are possible on each end of the karma meter, for ‘Law’ and ‘Chaos’ and one for Neutral. So if you were mostly ‘Law’ you can unlock three endings in the same-playthrough by ensuring you make a save state at the beginning of stage 9-2.

In Stage 9, the final stage, you will ultimate go through four questions while seated in the confessional. Each answer will help decide which ending path you will get in that end of your karma meter.

A fast way to clean-up and get all endings is once you complete the game, clean-up your remaining puzzles with gold prizes. When you start a new game, you will be able to go through the golden playhouse mode and be able to “skip” any stage you have a gold prize in. This will save time and several full-playthroughs, and allow you to also help with other trophies.

Get Justin out of his Jam.

Justin is one of the patrons you will meet in the bar. To unlock this patron trophy, it will be completely dependent on your conversation choices you make with him. Justin will start to appear in the Stray Sheep Bar on Day 2 when you are first able to free roam the bar. He will be sitting at the bar on the left side of you at the bar where you will sit in front of the bartender.

You will want to ensure each day you are having a conversation with him, and replying with only positive answers. During the platform sequences between Nightmare Stages, Justin will be identified as the “Sheep in Glasses”, so you’ll also have to always talk to him in these areas as well. If you have successfully helped him out, he will appear back at the Bar on Day 8 in the very same spot you always find him in, on the left side of you at the bar. Talk to him again, and he'll thank you for helping him getting "out of his jam".

Use the Jukebox to change the music.

What's a bar without the usual jukebox? That background music you hear playing in the Stray Sheep Bar? Beginning on day 2, when you are able to free-roam the bar you can walk up to this jukebox to change the music. You will unlock more tracks as you progress through the Golden Playhouse.

Simply change the track to something else for this trophy. As you unlock more trophies in the game, more tracks will become available to play at your choosing.

Reply to at least 20 text messages by the end of the final day.

This trophy will unlock if you have 20 text messages in the sent folder in your cell phone by the time you leave the bar on the 8th day. As it is possible to compile 20 text messages even before that time, the trophy will only unlock on day 8. Every day you will have text messages from various sources. It is important that you stick around the Stray Sheep Bar until almost everyone has left to exhaust all possible incoming text message opportunities. Talking to patrons more than once until they have a “grey” status in their pink talk box can help with getting follow-up messages.

Once you get a message, it is in your best interest to always reply to get follow-up messages to be able to send more messages. Open your mobile phone with :triangle: to read a text message, which you can then select the message with :cross: to enter a reply. To change the outgoing text line, use the erase command via the :circle:, and then :cross: again to re-input a different response. Different responses will affect your karma meter towards chaos, neutral, or law.

(Missable)

These alcoholic drinks are available for you to drink each night at the Stray Sheep Bar beginning on day 2. Each night you will always start in a booth with your friends and will start out with a cocktail. When you have control of Vincent, you will need to push :square: three times to finish up your drink after three sips of your glass or cup. After which the narrator will share some trivia on that drink for the night. After that, Erica will ask if you want another drink, your selections will be:

:triangle:

Whiskey

:circle:
Beer

:square:
Sake

:cross:
Cocktail

Since you always start off with Vincent’s favorite cocktail, you really never need to reorder that drink. To get all these trophies in one-playthrough and without missing any you will want to order the remaining three drinks on the menu, each time you will take three sips to empty the glass/ cup and you will get a new trivia for that type of drink for the night. Repeat this same process every night until the final night on day 8 which is when these trophies will unlock. You can also order your drinks at the bar with Boss the bartender. That is if you decide to talk to patroons or do not wish to sit back in the booth with your friends.

Stay in the bar until all the other customers left.

Your first opportunity for this is on Day 5 and any subsequent days until the last night. You need to stay at the Stray Sheep Bar after the patrons and your friends have left. As you would normally be talking to all the patrons to work on their trophies, this can come naturally during your playthrough as if you talk to everyone, time will eventually pass and it will be just you and your friends left. Just be sure to return to your friends at your booth and talk to them again and they will eventually decide to leave and ask you whether you will leave with them or stay. You want to select the option "Be careful..." to stay at the bar.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/380/39.jpgBabel's Calling (B)

Unlock the Altar by earning 1 Gold Prize on Normal or Hard.

You can only get this trophy by playing Golden Playhouse mode on Normal or Hard difficulty, and after obtaining one Gold Prize on a stage. Gold Prizes are obtained in stages by keeping your step multiplier chain without losing it, not using checkpoints, and collecting all enigma coins in the stage. The easiest way to unlock this trophy is to get a Gold Prize on 1-1 as this is the easiest level to obtain it. Make sure to collect all the enigma coins and keep your combo throughout the entire Stage until the finish to obtain a Gold Prize.

Steps to complete:

  • Solo - 150
  • Pairs - 102-107

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/380/47.jpgThe Golden Child (H)(G)

Earn Gold Prizes on all Hard difficulty stages.

This is one of more difficult trophies in the game because it requires Gold Prizes on all 9 Golden Playhouse stages in Hard difficulty. There are several differences to getting Gold Prizes in Hard versus Normal difficulty. There is no rewind with :select:, and the Nightmare Stages are bigger in-scale and vary from Normal. It is also relevant to note blocks fall faster in this difficulty.

There is also no bonus modifiers for safety bonus either, so you’ll have to ensure you always get almost all the enigma coins to keep your chain going. Learn each stage, and study the patterns and utilize all the skills and techniques you have learned previously as they will be put to the test here. Since Golden Playhouse are always canned stage puzzles, one can use visual video walkthrough assistance to help one progress through the most optimal paths in each stage to achieve Golden Prizes. Refer to each Stage Related Trophy for these walkthroughs on the Hard difficulty level.

If you started on a difficulty side from Hard, you do not have to start a new playthrough to complete the Golden Playhouse on Hard. Simply use your :start: menu and change the difficulty setting to Hard. After that, you can use your cell phone and under the AWARDS menu, then highlight "Stage Select" to replay all the levels on Hard.

After you have earned a Golden Prize in all nine stages on Hard difficulty, this trophy will unlock.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/380/49.jpgA Mystery Within a Puzzle (H)(B)

Uncover the truth behind Rapunzel.

This trophy is related to the Rapunzel arcade game in the Stray Sheep Tavern. For this you have to complete:

  • The initial 64 stages in the Normal Mode of Rapunzel
  • Collected all four rosaries during a playthrough, which are located on Stages 52, 56, 60, and 64 respectively
  • And also start-up the newly unlocked Extra Mode

After completing Stage 48, Rapunzel will give you a hint about collecting rosaries for her finger, the first of which will appear in Stage 52. It is important to note that once you've started to collect the rosaries, you need to finish up to Stage 64 without leaving the game otherwise your collected progress will be lost. Once you completed the stage with the rosaries you will be given a code on-screen to use to unlock the “Extra” stages for the second part of Rapunzel. The code is only usable once Rapunzel has been cleared and you have a heart on the title screen.

The code to unlock Rapunzel Extra Stages is as-follows:

  •          :right:

Once the code is entered the title screen will change to purple and the game play mode will change. Simply start up Extra Stage 1 at this point, and the trophy will unlock.

Hear Rapunzel's sad song.

This trophy is also related to the Rapunzel arcade game in the Stray Sheep Tavern. You have to complete Extra Mode Stages 1-64, which becomes available after completing Stages 1-64. You will also have to collect the rosaries in the following stages from Normal and Extra Mode for a total of eight, to hear the sad song:

  • Stage 52
  • Stage 56
  • Stage 60
  • Stage 64

Keep in mind there is a difference when playing in Extra Mode; you will need the genie lamp before rosaries will appear in the Extra Stages. Once you collect them all, and finish Extra Stage 64 you will unlock the true ending for this trophy.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/380/48.jpgPast a Heap of Puzzles (B)

Beat Stage 64 of Rapunzel.

Rapunzel is the arcade game available to play at the Stray Sheep Bar. It is a retro-classic version of the actual gameplay in the Catherine Nightmare Stages in Golden Playhouse. There are a total of 128 levels, with 64 levels in each mode. During your initial playthrough you only get to get 3 credits per day. Once you complete the Golden Playhouse in subsequent playthroughs, Free Play mode becomes available with unlimited credits. For this trophy, you just need to clear and beat the initial 64 stages.

XCVii007r1's channel has a video solution to each of the Rapunzel 128 (each 64) stages for the highest scores.

Roadmap is still in progress, but we'll have it finished up by tomorrow. The state its in now though, you can use it no problem.

Videos and Babel tips are whats more to come. We'll also have a separate guide posted for interacting with the Patrons as well as one for Text Messaging.

Otherwise, enjoy for the time-being. We'll be doing more updates throughout the week :).

Keep up the great work on your trophy guide. My problem is the everyday hero trophy. Can you provide all the positive answers for each person so by the 8th day they will all be there.

I already beat the game & only got Justin to survive on the 8th day.

Thanks if you can.

A patron guide is coming!

Something that you guys should know, it's 40 (B) and 3 (G)

It has been fixed! Blame my late-night eyes. :)

Yeah, you can earn gold prizes on easy to allow skipping at that difficulty. As Gold Prizes will carry over to all subsequent playthroughs for that difficulty setting.
