Introduction:

"Birds of Steel", the latest flight simulator for consoles by Gaijin Entertainment, will have you soaring through the skies in a variety of WWII aircraft. Whether you like to fight huge groups of enemies and blast your way through them or prefer to fight with realistic settings, "Birds of Steel" has something for everyone.

Take up the call to fight gloriously for your country in a multitude of single player campaigns, single missions and co-op missions. You can even compete against other human players around the world in the various online game modes. Not enough players online you say? Throw in a couple of bots for added excitement!

I have good news for those of you who are familiar with its predecessor "IL-2 Sturmovik: Birds of Prey". The platinum for Birds of Steel requires nowhere near as much work as Birds of Prey did.

To begin with, you're not required to complete the entire campaign on simulator difficulty anymore. There are still a few difficulty related trophies in certain missions however.

But most importantly, compared to Birds of Prey's time consuming online trophies, the online trophies in Birds of Steel are a breeze. Birds of Steel still has weapon loadouts (and various other things) that require to be unlocked, but for the platinum you only required to unlock a select few things.

Walkthrough

Step 1: The offline experience

Step 1.1: Completing the Pre-War chapter

The Pre-War chapter can be found under "Historical Campaign" at the main menu and serves as the tutorial of the game. Here you will learn the basics on how to become a flying ace. Simply listen to the instructions given to complete this simple chapter consisting of four missions. Since these missions are really easy, I would recommend you to at least play the first three missions on simulator difficulty. This way you will earn some extra XP. The final mission however requires you to land on an aircraft carrier, which can be somewhat challenging on simulator difficulty. So if you feel uncomfortable with this difficulty, feel free to lower it for the last mission.

At the end of this step you will have earned:

(B)(H) Take-Off

(B) It Was Easy

(B) Preparing

Step 1.2: Completing the Historical Campaigns

There are two different historical campaigns. One for the USA and one for Japan. The order and difficulty in which you choose to complete these don't matter, with the exception of four difficulty related trophies that can be earned in certain missions.

Please have a look at this thread to learn about an exploit that makes the "Realistic" difficulty trophies easier to obtain.

Check the overview below to see which trophies can be earned while playing through the historical campaigns. Note that all the trophies can be missed unless stated otherwise. Each mission however can easily be replayed once you have completed it, so you can always go back to earn the trophies you missed. For a more in-depth look at the requirements of these trophies, please refer to the Trophy Guide.

------------- (B) Guadalcanal (Story related, cannot be missed) -------------
------------- (G) From The Far East (Story related, cannot be missed) -------------

While playing through the campaigns you will also earn a few miscellaneous trophies, like the rank and kill trophies depending on how well you did. It's not a big deal if you didn't earn all of them at this point, since these trophies are cumulative over all offline and online game modes.

(B) Rookie
(B) Combat Pilot
(B) It Was Easy
(S) Half-Way
(S) New Record
(S) New Weapon

Step 1.3: Completing the single missions

From the main menu go to "Missions" > "Single Missions" in order to play the different single missions. You will only need to complete a total of four missions, one mission in each of the following chapters:
- "Siege of Malta" (Mediterranean Theater)
- "Ruhr" (Western Front)
- "Battle for the Kuban" (Eastern Front)
- "New Guinea Campaign" (Pacific Ocean Theater)

There's a variety of missions styles, e.g. bombing missions, escort missions, dogfighting, timed landing missions, etc... These missions are usually pretty easy, so just pick one that suits your particular "talents". Be sure to do one of these missions in online co-op for the related co-op trophy.

After this step you will have earned:

(B) Malta
(B) Ruhr
(B) Kuban
(B) New Guinea
(B) Make a Flight

Step 2: The online experience

Because of a dwindling online community, I recommend you find a boosting partner in the trophy boosting thread.

With the exception of one trophy all the online trophies can be earned with two people.

(S) Brave Spirit will require a third person so you can win a match while being outnumbered.

The trophy you want to work on first is (S) Good Start, this one takes the longest to complete and you'll earn a few other online trophies along the way ((S) Leader and (B) New Decal).

While boosting Good Start you will earn "Lionheads". Once you have enough of these (19,800) purchase the F4F-3 and the P-40E-1. You will then use the P-40E-1 to unlock (B) New Skin and (B) You Will Be Ace along the way.

Step 3: The offline experience revisited - Dynamic campaign

The reason why I recommend doing this after the online part, is because in this mode you can only choose aircraft that you have purchased (or the ones that are available from the start). If you do the online part first, you will earn some "Lionheads" that you can then use to buy a couple of the more interesting planes. It is perfectly possible to complete a dynamic campaign with the planes that are available from the start however.

A fast dynamic campaign is the "Battle of Wake Island" with the "Frontline advantage" set to "Friendly". This way you will only need to capture two enemy sectors.

Log out of PSN and play the dynamic campaign completely offline to avoid repair costs to your aircraft when dying. (This doesn't apply to the starter planes, which are free to repair.)

Step 4: Clean up

Almost there! All that's left now is cleaning up any trophies that you might have missed. This will be different for everyone so have a look at my trophy guide to find the specific trophies you're missing and how to achieve them.

Trophy Guide

6D6.jpg

Bird of Steel (P)

Earn all available Trophies for Birds of Steel.

You will need to earn all the other trophies in order to unlock this.

Campaign Related Trophies

CB0.jpg Preparing (B)

Complete the Pre-War chapter.

The pre-war chapter (located under "Historical Campaign") consists of four missions and serves as a tutorial to the game. You will be clearly instructed on what to do in these simple missions. If at any point you forgot what your objective is, press :circle: to bring up the mini-map and your objectives for that mission. Once you have completed all four missions, you will earn this trophy.

011.jpg Return to Oahu (B)

Make "Touch and Go" on Ford Island in the mission "Return to Oahu".

Instead of returning to your aircraft carrier at the end of the mission, simply fly towards Pearl Harbor. In the middle of the harbor you will find a small island, called Ford Island. This is where you will need to do a "touch-and-go". For those of you who are unfamiliar with this term, a touch-and-go landing is when you land your aircraft on an airfield but take off again before coming to a full stop.

E32.jpg Second Breath (B)

Rearm on the airfield between attacks on hostile ships in the mission "American Counterattack".

In this mission you will need to destroy 2 cargo ships and 1 battleship. Simply land on the airfield located on the nearby island between your attacks on these ships. Once you come to a full stop a message should appear telling you that you have been rearmed/refuelled. It doesn't matter when you do this as long as you do it before you destroy all 3 ships.

D40.jpg Blitz Attack (B)

Destroy 6 enemy bombers before they reach the Wake in the mission "Japanese Raid".

After take-off, you will be faced with a big group of incoming bombers. These are G4M1 "Betty" bombers, they are large, slow-moving aircraft and, since they will not break formation and are not escorted by fighters, they're perfect for target practice. Aim for their engines and you should get 6 kills pretty easily, but remember to watch out for their gunners.

D66.jpg Survivor (B)

Land your damaged aircraft on the airfield in the mission "The Two Against Thirty-Nine".

At the end of this mission, you will automatically get damaged in a cutscene. After the cutscene ends, you will be perfectly aligned with the runway allowing you to easily land your aircraft. (Even though you're supposed to be damaged, you shouldn't find landing your aircraft any more challenging than a normal landing).

409.jpg Wake Island (B)

Complete the American chapter "Battle of Wake Island".

Story related, cannot be missed.

Complete the 3 missions in this chapter to earn this trophy. All these missions are easy to complete and very straightforward. Remember to press :circle: to access the mini-map and see what you're objectives are in case you forgot.

F58.jpg Bombshell (B)

Damage destroyer with machine gun fire in the mission "Invasion of Tulagi".

This is actually a mission objective and shouldn't be missable. You will only be able to attack it with your machine guns, since you won't have any bombs/rockets/torpedoes. Simply strafe the destroyer a few times, eventually it will catch fire and this trophy will pop.

51B.jpg Not a Victim (B)

Destroy two hostile fighters with the rear gunner in the mission "To Scratch One Flat-top".

Use :triangle: to switch views until you have the gunner view. It's relatively easy as you will certainly get more than two enemy fighters on your tail and you can shoot straight at aircraft's engine or pilot.

Personally I like to attach a mouse to my PS3 whenever I need to use the rear gunner. It allows you to move around more easily than using a PS3 controller or Flight Stick. You will still need to press the fire button on your main controller though. Also remember that even though you're the gunner, you also still need to pilot the plane at the same time.

984.jpg Coral Sea (B)

Complete the American chapter "Battle of the Coral Sea".

Story related, cannot be missed.

Complete both missions in this chapter to earn this trophy. Remember to press :circle: to access the mini-map and see what you're objectives are in case you forgot.

EB7.jpg Formation Keeper (B)

Stay near the flight leader all the way to the enemy fleet in the "American Strike" mission.

At some point in this mission your objective will be to follow your leader to the enemy fleet. You will find yourself at the rear of a big formation. Instead of staying there, I recommendgetting closer to the leader and follow his every move. Maintain the same altitude and turn when he turns. If you didn't earn the trophy before or a couple of seconds after the next objective starts, then you didn't fly well enough.

252.jpg Way of the Sun (B)

Complete the 1st secondary mission objective in the "Fate of Hiryu" mission.

The 1st secondary mission consists of using the sun to perform a surprise attack on the enemy fleet. As soon as the objective appears your mini-map will update with a dot to which you will need to fly, before heading to the enemy fleet.

8EE.jpg Fast and Furious (B)

Complete the first objective in less than 5 minutes in the "Tulagi Landing" mission.

For the first objective you will need to scout the area and attack any enemy planes you find. You will first come across a group of 6 A6M2-N's, that you need to destroy. These are stationary targets and pretty fragile. Once you destroy these you will need to continue searching and you will eventually come across a second, identical group. This group is easier to destroy since they are almost perfectly aligned. Destroy all these A6M2-N's in less than 5 minutes to earn the trophy. The best tip I can give you is to conserve your ammunition, because even with unlimited ammunition, you will lose precious time if you need to reload.

864.jpg Killer (B)

Kill 15 enemy infantry units in the "Battle for Henderson Field" mission.

Once you get to the location where you need to engage enemy ground units, you should see enemy infantry on the beaches if you fly low. Simply strafe the beach a few times. Once you kill at least 1 infantry unit, a little counter will appear that tells you how many you still need to kill for the trophy. After a while you will most likely be stuck on 2-4 infantry units and strafing the beaches will have no effect any more. This is because the infantry moved back into the slightly wooded area. They are harder to see here, but fly low enough and you should spot some of them. Kill them until the counter reaches 0.

E9B.jpg Total Annihilation (B)

Destroy at least 20 enemy bombers in the "Battle of the Santa Cruz" mission.

Personally I thought this was the most difficult trophy of the US campaign. Not because it's difficult to get kills, but twenty is a lot and for once your wingmen actually seem to make quite a few kills. This makes it somewhat frustrating. Check the tips below to make this easier:

  1. Make sure you have unlimited ammunition.
  2. Always fire short bursts from up close to get fast kills and conserve ammo. Reloading takes a lot of time and the friendly A.I will get a lot of kills while you can't do anything during that time.
  3. Change your "Gun Targeting Distance" to 200-300m to fire accurately at close range.
  4. Personally I make two of the aircraft under my command bail out right from the start. Otherwise they will end up getting kills.
  5. Try to get at least eight kills during the first wave.
  6. Try to get at least eight kills during the second wave.
  7. Once you have chased away the bombers, try to find a group that is trying to leave the area and chase them to get your final kills if you need to. At this point you want to make sure to bailout your last wingman if he's still following you. Otherwise he will kill most of those last bombers.

048.jpg To The Far East (G)

Complete the American Historical campaign.

Story related, cannot be missed.

After winning all missions in the American campaign, you will earn this trophy. All these missions are really easy and very straightforward even on simulator difficulty.

490.jpg First Wave (B)

Destroy all vehicles on Wheeler Field in the mission "First Wave".

Once you get to Wheeler Field in the beginning of this mission, do not drop your bombs on the aircraft or hangars. If you do this and hit your targets, the mission will continue and you will be unable to return here. Instead be on the lookout for 4 trucks, which are spread out across the airfield. They are pretty easy to spot if you fly low and slow. The safest way is to attack them with your guns rather than your bombs, because if you hit something else the mission will continue.

2BA.jpg Second Wave (B)

Bomb two different targets by one loadout in the mission "Second Wave".

When playing on simplified difficulty, you can drop your bombs separately. You have two bombs, so simply drop the first bomb on one ship and the second one on another (Credit to InfiniteStates for this information).

For those who like to play on simulator difficulty, I would recommend attacking the big battleship that has a small ship next to it (see picture below). Aim your bombs in-between these two ships, the Bomb Sight will help you to drop bombs with high accuracy.

0DWzdjf.png

35D.jpg Pearl Harbor (B)

Complete the Japanese chapter "Attack on Pearl Harbor".

Story related, cannot be missed.

Complete both missions in this chapter to earn this trophy. Both these missions are easy to complete since the enemy resistance is very low. Remember to press :circle: to access the mini-map and see what your objectives are in case you forgot.

F79.jpg Sentinel (B)

Don't let enemy fighters destroy any bomber of your group in the mission "Attack on Lexington".

In this mission you will be tasked with escorting 12 bombers. Once you get attacked, do not get into fancy dogfights with the enemy fighters. Remain behind your friendly bombers and fire short bursts at enemies who try to attack them. If the enemy fighter dives or turns away, do not chase him but deal with any other potential threats.

50A.jpg Untouchable (B)

Don't die in the mission "Shōkaku Defense".

During this mission you will first face a wave of SDB-3's, followed by a wave of TBF-1c's. Both of these have rear gunners and are escorted by fighters, so be careful. Concentrate on shooting down these bombers before they reach their target. If at any time you feel like you're taking too much damage or have a fighter on your tail that you can't manage to evade, then simply switch to another aircraft in your flight. This way you can escape possible death.

Finally, after the bombers, you will need to engage some enemy fighters. Engaging means that simply hitting them is enough. There will be a little counter in the bottom left of your screen, if it goes down you can move on to another fighter if you wish.

90F.jpg Hedgehopper (B)

Destroy 5 light targets on Midway Island on Simulator difficulty in the "Midway Atoll" mission.

Once you get to Midway island, you will notice that it's filled with light ground targets, most of them are light anti-aircraft gun emplacements. I highly recommend attacking these in order to lower the amount of gunfire directed at you. Not all ground targets count for this trophy, only the ones that appear as flashing yellow icons on your mini-map (most of the ones on the main island).

On simulator difficulty you won't be able to lock on to the targets, making it a bit harder to spot them so keep an eye on the tracers to find them. Remember to always stay as low as possible but move fast to minimize the damage taken. If you are taking too much damage, use a kamikaze attack on a target and switch to another aircraft. This way you can manage to get a last kill, before getting shot down.

At the beginning of the mission, the AI has the tendency to crash the planes on take-off. You can minimize your chances of this happening by trying the following:

SIE said:
When you start on the Japanese carrier press select and switch to the next pilot that sometimes crashes and allow the first plane to take off. Then accelerate and when the plane starts to move go a little to the left, then hit select and take the next plane. Let number 2 do his thing and continue to let the remaining planes take off.

133.jpg Defender (B)

Destroy 3 enemy bombers in each wave on Realistic difficulty in the "First Carrier Fleet" mission.

The first wave will be a group of SBD-3's, while the second wave consists of TBF-1c's. Both these waves are unescorted and will maintain their formation even under attack. Although they have rear gunners, they're easy targets. There is actually a third wave but for me personally it already unlocked after the second wave.

063.jpg Eagle-Eyed (B)

Find the TF-17 carrier fleet in the "Counterattack" mission.

Once you get the objective to follow your leader to the enemy fleet, you will fly straight ahead for a while and stumble upon another carrier fleet in sector AN42 on your mini-map. The TF-17 carrier fleet is located a little bit to the south-west of this fleet (in sector AP40). Switch to gunner view to spot targets a lot more easily.

Please note that the TF-17 carrier fleet moves in a south-east direction, so the location might have changed slightly.

ZbfTI2u.jpg

84B.jpg Midway Atoll (B)

Complete the Japanese chapter "Battle of Midway".

Story related, cannot be missed.

Complete the three missions in this chapter to earn this trophy. Remember to press :circle: to access the mini-map and see what you're objectives are in case you forgot.

3B4.jpg Sharp Shooter (B)

Destroy 5 enemy planes on Realistic difficulty in the "Battle of the Eastern Solomons" mission.

Undoubtedly the most difficult trophy to get. The most difficult part is actually the mission itself, rather than the trophy. You will need to protect friendly dive bombers from enemy fighters. But once you're down to eight bombers, you will automatically lose the mission.

If you concentrate on getting kills before too many bombers get shot down, you will most likely fail. Therefore I recommend you to protect your bombers first. Once you get past that part, the enemy fighters will retreat which gives you time to chase them.

Here's a list of things to consider:

  1. Set the ammunition to unlimited.
  2. Don't concentrate on getting kills.
  3. Stay behind the bombers that you need to protect at all times.
  4. Fire short bursts at enemy fighters who are threatening your bombers.
  5. If an enemy fighter dives or turns away, just let him go and move on to the next threat.
  6. Conserve ammo!!! The cannon of the A6M2 reloads very slowly and the machine gun is weak.
  7. Once the enemy fighters retreat you can chase them and try getting your kills up to five.

Note: Sometimes you won't get awarded the trophy even when you meet the requirements. At the moment I have no idea what causes the glitch and all I can tell you is to try again. At some point it will unlock. (I will update this if I find out more about the glitch.)

F5C.jpg One of a Few (B)

Land on the Zuikaku at the end of the "Battle of South Pacific" mission on Realistic difficulty.

At this point you should already have done quite a few landings (if you didn't choose to skip them at least). Line up with the aircraft carrier and gradually decrease the throttle. Lower your flaps, aim for the deck and smoothly try to land the plane. Don't aim to close to the border of the carrier. If you did it properly, your landing hook should have grabbed one of the cables and you will come to a stop. If you need to practice for this, replay the fourth mission of the pre-war chapter.

061.jpg Guadalcanal (B)

Complete the Japanese chapter "Guadalcanal Campaign".

Story related, cannot be missed.

Complete the two missions in this chapter to earn this trophy. Remember to press :circle: to access the mini-map and see what you're objectives if you forgot. The "Battle of the Eastern Solomons" mission is the most frustrating mission of this chapter (and of all the campaigns). Follow the tips I wrote for the Sharp Shooter trophy to make it somewhat easier.

0A6.jpg From The Far East (G)

Complete the Japanese Historical campaign.

Story related, cannot be missed.

After winning all the missions in the Japanese campaign, you will earn this trophy. The two most difficult missions are the "Attack on Lexington" and the "Battle of the Eastern Solomons".

At some point in the "Attack on Lexington" mission, you will be tasked with destroying a certain amount of planes within a certain amount of time (depending on your difficulty).

If you decide to fly towards the enemy fighters as soon as you get the objective to shoot them down, you will probably end up somewhere at low altitude and struggle to catch the enemy fighters that are attacking your friendly bombers at high altitude.

So the best strategy here is to stay close to the second group of friendly bombers (not the one you had to protect in the first part of the mission). The enemy fighters will be targeting these bombers and they will be easier to shoot down at this moment.

For the "Battle of the Eastern Solomons" mission, please check the trophy information of Sharp Shooter.

82C.jpg Winner (B)

Complete any Dynamic campaign.

The Dynamic campaign can be found under "Missions" on the main menu. Here you can choose from several campaigns and settings. One of the shortest campaigns would be the "Battle of Wake Island". With the "Frontline advantage" set to "Friendly", you should win this campaign after capturing only two enemy sectors. Once you start the campaign, you can choose one of the missions to play. A mission can always be replayed but you will gain less from it if you do.

While playing a Dynamic campaign you can only use starter planes or planes that you have purchased. If you die when using an aircraft that you purchased while being connected to the online, you will need to pay to repair your plane. To avoid this, press :square: (Play Offline) at the first settings menu after selecting which campaign you want to play. (Credit to InfiniteStates for this information).

Single Mission Related Trophies

CCA.jpg Malta (B)

Complete any mission in the Single Missions chapter "Siege of Malta".

Complete one of the five missions from this chapter for this trophy. "Squirrelly" is an easy mission, since it doesn't require you to do any actual fighting. (This simple mission can only be played alone).

05F.jpg Kuban (B)

Complete any mission in the Single Missions chapter "Battle for the Kuban".

Complete one of the six missions from this chapter for this trophy. "Vigorous", "Eye of the Storm" and "On the Edge" are some easy missions, since they don't require you to do any actual fighting. (These simple missions can only be played alone).

BC7.jpg Ruhr (B)

Complete any mission in the Single Missions chapter "Battle of Ruhr".

Complete one of the six missions from this chapter for this trophy. "Crunch" and "Along the River" are some easy missions, since they don't require you to do any actual fighting. (These simple missions can only be played alone).

663.jpg New Guinea (B)

Complete any mission in the Single Missions chapter "New Guinea Campaign".

Complete one of the four missions from this chapter for this trophy. "Heels over Head" and "Flying Boat" are some easy missions, since they don't require you to do any actual fighting. (These simple missions can only be played alone).

Online Trophies

Note #1: Several online trophies can be earned even if no other human player is in the lobby (Credit to Olympic260). This only works if your match is not private, so remember that someone else can always join. Sometimes a requirement will be to get human kills however, obviously these can't be done vs. bots.

Note #2: If you need assistance in finding an online partner to help you with the online trophies, please use the trophy boosting thread to find someone.

D6A.jpg Make a Flight (B)

Complete any mission in CO-OP mode.

Complete any single mission, dynamic campaign mission or self-created mission in online co-op. You can make it a private match in case you only want to play with friends.

F4C.jpg Good Start (S)

Receive 5 medals.

I suggest working on this online trophy first, because along the way you will pick up a few other online trophies as well. For this particular trophy, you need to earn five medals. Press :triangle: at the main menu to go to your pilot's profile. From there, press :r1: until you reach the medals tab. Here you will see a complete overview of all the medals that can be earned and the requirements for them.

The easiest five medals are:

- War Medal 1939-1945: Win 5 Versus matches using British planes.

- France and Germany Star: Win 10 Versus matches using British planes on any Ruhr map.

- Good Conduct Medal: Win 5 Versus matches using US planes.

- Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal: Win 10 Versus matches using US planes.

- Order of Military Merit: Win 10 Versus matches using Japanese planes.

Please note that most maps won't allow you to just fly with any aircraft. For example, if you play on a European map, you will not be able to fly Japanese aircraft there. It has to be historically accurate.

The fastest method to earn this is to start a private versus match. Make sure that you meet the requirements for the medal you're trying to earn and put your settings like this:

- Rounds and flyouts: One round, single flyout

- Private match: Yes

- Mission rotation: No

- Include bots: No

When the match starts, the losing player should just crash his aircraft for a fast win. As losing player you will want to use one of the starter planes. The other planes will need to be repaired if you crash, which costs Lionheads or require you to wait six hours before you can use it again.

623.jpg You Will Be Ace (B)

Destroy 4 planes in Versus mode.

Simply kill four human players while playing versus matches. This is cumulative and does not require to be done in one match. If you follow this guide, then this will unlock when you go for the New Skin trophy.

A77.jpg Brave Spirit (S)

Win a battle against superior forces in Versus mode.

If the enemy team has one more player on their team than you have, then you will earn this at the end of the match if you manage to win. (Bots also count as pilots according to Smoking, but some people have reported otherwise.)

4B1.jpg Leader (S)

Win a battle in Versus mode as the leader.

For this trophy, you need to have the best score at the end of the game while being in the winning team. (Credits to Smoking for this information). Easily obtained in a 1 vs. 1 private match.

59B.jpg New Skin (B)

Earn any skin for your plane.

Press :triangle: at the main menu to go to your pilot's profile. From there, press :r1: until you reach the skins tab. Here you will see a complete overview of all the skins that can be earned and the requirements for them.

One of the easiest is the "White 104", 76th FS, China, 1942 skin. This will require you to kill five other human players in versus mode while flying in a P-40E-1. Before you can purchase this aircraft however, you will need to be rank 5 and possess a total of 19,800 Lionheads. 9,300 Lionheads will be needed to purchase the F4F-3 and 10,500 Lionheads are required to buy the P-40E-1. You will need to buy the F4F-3 before you can purchase the P-40E-1.

17D.jpg New Decal (B)

Earn any decal for your plane.

Press :triangle: at the main menu to go to your pilot's profile. From there, press :r1: until you reach the decals tab. Here you will see a complete overview of all the decals that can be earned and the requirements for them.

One of the easiest is the Yellow Sun decal for which you will need to win 5 versus missions. You should actually unlock this decal and several others while going for the Good Start trophy.

Miscellaneous Trophies

5F0.jpg Rookie (B)

Earn the second rank.

See Half-Way for more info.

715.jpg Combat Pilot (B)

Earn the fifth rank.

See Half-Way for more info.

502.jpg Half-Way (S)

Earn the tenth rank.

If you play on realistic or simulator as much as possible, then this will most likely unlock near the end of the historical campaigns.

If you don't have enough by then, simply continue playing the game. Everything you do in this game both offline an online, will give you XP (e.g.: air/ground kills, take-offs, completing missions, etc). Playing on higher difficulty settings will net you more XP.

The most rewarding things are: killing human players in versus and winning online matches on simulator difficulty.

930.jpg Take-Off (B) (H)

Take off.

At the beginning of the first mission of the pre-war chapter you will be instructed and asked to take off. After this simple task is done, the trophy will be yours. Can also be earned in any other mission where you need to take off.

DF6.jpg It Was Easy (B)

Land on an aircraft carrier.

This should unlock during the fourth mission of the pre-war chapter. If your landing is sloppy and you end up damaging your prop for example, then it won't unlock. If this happens to you simply replay the mission or find another mission where you can land on an aircraft carrier (e.g: "Attack on Lexington" in the Japanese historical campaign).

982.jpg The Italian (S)

Fly in each Italian plane.

Easily obtained with test flights. Press :square: while on the main menu to access your hangar. The Italian planes are actually listed under Germany. Highlight the plane you want and press :start: to do a test flight. You can immediately exit after it has started. Here's a list of the Italian planes:

- CR.42 Falco

- G.50 seria 2

- G.50 seria 7AS

- M.C.200 serie 3

- M.C.200 serie 7

- M.C.202

DCC.jpg The Australian (S)

Fly in each Australian plane.

Easily obtained with test flights. Press :square: while on the main menu to access your hangar. The Australian planes are actually listed under Britain. Highlight the plane you want and press :start: to do a test flight. You can immediately exit after it has started. Here's a list of the Australian planes:

- Boomerang Mk I

- Boomerang Mk II

- Wirraway

- Beaufighter Mk 21

- Beaufort Mk VIII

7B7.jpg Choose Your Favorite (B)

Fly in one of each country's planes.

Easily obtained with test flights. Press :square: while on the main menu to access your hangar. You will need to fly with an aircraft from the USA, Germany, Italy, USSR, Britain, Australia and Japan. Highlight the plane you want and press :start: to do a test flight. You can immediately exit after it has started.

B02.jpg New Record (S)

Destroy 100 planes.

Easily obtained while playing through the offline part of the game, so there should be absolutely no way of needing to grind for this. If you really need more kills, try playing some missions were you need to shoot down bombers. The mission "Japanese Raid" in the American campaign is pretty good for this. It's not the fastest way but these bombers are easy to shoot down and have no escort.

EC1.jpg New Weapon (S)

Destroy 100 ground units.

Compared to the similar trophy for air kills, this might require you to do some extra grinding. The "First Wave" mission from the Japanese campaign is a good way to get easy ground kills.

Although not complete , Nice guide but i think you wrong with the difficoulty/3,5 ... trophies with the realistic/simulator difficoult are almost impossible even can not turn right or left you can just go straight xD (need just 5 trophy 4 Platinum they are trophy with simulator/realistic difficoult) :(

Well 3,5/10 is only my personal estimate. I have had a lot of experience with flight simulators before starting to play on the PS3. It's not that difficult once you get the hang of it. On simulator settings you have to be very careful when turning. Do it slowly, rather than using sudden quick movements. Otherwise you will spin/stall.

I also have a flightstick, keyboard and mouse attached to my PS3 rather than using the default PS3 controller. It allows for much smoother control.

The platinum for this game is not nearly as much work as Birds of Prey was. :) It can be done in about 3 days.

You are not required to fly the entire campaign on simulator difficulty anymore, so that will save the casual gamers a lot of work. You just have the occasional difficulty trophy. Two of these are not that difficult, but Sharp Shooter and Hedgehopper will require some skill and patience.

As far as unlocks go, this one is a breeze compared to IL-2. Instead of needing to unlock everything for the platinum, you'll just need to get 1 skin, 1 decal, etc...

The trophy that requires most work is "Good Start", where you need to get 5 medals. You have a lot of medals to choose from, most require either kills or wins in versus mode with a country-specific aircraft. It should require a total of 30 versus wins to get the 5 easiest medals.

Game-wise I prefer this game over IL-2. It has more content and the unlock system is at least more fun than in IL-2.

Although I would still change a few things in the game if I had my way, but the only real downside compared to IL-2 in my opinion is that this game doesn't support 1080p.

The guide is now finished and awaiting "inspection" from the guide team. :)

Yeah IL-2 was a bit of a pain getting every criteria for all of the planes. I was checking out this game, but haven't seen it anywhere.

Yeah, this is one of those games that passes under the radar. Stores don't know the game or only have a very limited supply. Hope you can find a copy!

If you really want to unlock and earn everything in Birds of Steel you can still expect a lot of online flight hours. (One of the German medals requires 2000 player kills) :p But luckily you don't need everything for the platinum. ;)

Log out of PSN and play the dynamic campaign completely offline in order to avoid repair costs to your aircraft when dying. (This doesn't apply to the starter planes, which are free to repair.)

You don't need to log out - you can just press square or something (there is a prompt for what to press to start an offline game, bottom left I believe).

Second Wave (B)

Bomb two different targets by one loadout in the mission "Second Wave".

Even though the ships are ankered really close to each other, this can require a few attempts. I would recommend attacking the big battleship that has a small ship next to it. Aim your bombs in-between these two ships. If you use the virtual cockpit or 3rd person view, you will get a visual aid that helps you see where your bombs will drop.

I thought this was quite hard as I was convinced the game dropped both bombs in one press. But doing it on simplified I noticed it dropped one bomb per press. This makes it really easy - just drop one bomb on different targets (you have two bombs).

Sharp Shooter (B)

  5. If an enemy fighters dives or turns away, just let him go and move on to the next threat.
  6. Conserve ammo!!! The cannon of the A6M2 reloads very slowly and the machine gun is rather weak.
  7. Once the enemy fighters retreat you can chase them and try getting your kills up to five.

Select custom difficulty and turn off realistic damage model. The enemy tend to explode in one hit then :)

I didn't even notice that button lol :p Thanks!

Oh, nice find. :) I only played it on simulator and there it does indeed drop both bombs at once.

I already mentioned that a few times in the roadmap, so I figured I wouldn't write it under the trophy description anymore.

Edited and gave you credits for those things. Thanks again.

All online trophies including the co-op can be taken even if no other human player is in the lobby. I took most of them flying with AI enemies only :)

Yes I know, but the problem is that someone else can always join in a public match.

And if you make it a private match, you will need at least 1 human player on each side.

You'll also still need someone for the Brave Spirit trophy, since with bots the match will be autobalanced and they won't leave or get disconnected.

I'll add it to the guide though, thanks!

can someone post a video on successfully complpeting hedgehopper? im really having a hard time with this one.

I doubt a video will help much. I would make one, but I don't have the equipment to record myself playing.

If you're not used to simulator difficulty then you should practice a bit and come back to this trophy later. Always make soft corrections to your stick, you won't be able to pull as hard as in simplified mode. Use your flaps, rudder and throttle in simulator mode.

And finally locate the targets on the ground by looking at the tracers of their guns and attack the immobile targets for easier kills.

regarding the sharpshooter trophy; destroy 5 enemy planes on realistic in the battle of eastern solomons. I successfully completed this mission on custom realistic, I shot down 5 planes and crashed into 2, but I didn't get the trophy. Firstly are there any reports of glitches on this trophy? and when is the trophy supposed to pop, at the end of the mission or as soon a 5 planes have been destroyed?

The trophy should pop up after you get your 5th kill. Make sure that "Real damage model" is set to "No" if you use the custom difficulty.

Since I wasn't sure, I didn't mark the trophy as glitched in the trophy guide yet. But it's not the first time I heard about it not unlocking while it should have. Personally I think I had five kills when I first played the mission on simulator, but since I didn't get the trophy I figured I had miscalculated.

If this is the case, then I have no idea what causes the glitch  and the only advise I can give you is to try again. Eventually it will unlock.
