Introduction

Bakugan: Defenders of the Core is the second console-based game so far to be based on the Bakugan anime and franchise. Defenders of the Core is nothing like the first Bakugan game. While the first game centered around steering balls and picking up cards, this game is more of a 3D robot action fighter, like Virtual On. There is no marble throwing. There are no controller-shaking battles. This is flying around the screen and comboing enemies to death. You don't have to have seen the show or played the first game to get everything the game has to offer.

Step 1: Play through Story Mode

Get a handle for the ropes of the game. The most important thing to do in Story Mode is to make sure you get all of the treasure boxes in exploration mode. All of the treasure chests can be found pretty easily, but it's a good idea to pause the game before you go to the finish line and make sure you have all treasure chests for a given level. This is to get all figurines and ability cards for Full Deck and Go Figure. Go Figure will unlock before the end of the first playthrough. Full Deck will not. In addition to getting all story trophies, you should naturally pick up a number of other trophies. Don't grind for anything yet.

Step 2: Play through Story Mode again

Once you beat Story Mode the first time, most of the Vexos Bakugan and more ability cards will unlock. The only thing left to do is collect the Traps to assemble Maxus Helios. This means starting Story Mode over again on the same save file and finding more treasure chests. If you missed any treasure chests from the first playthrough, you can get them now, but don't miss them again or you'll have to start an unnecessary third time. When you get all the Maxus Helios parts, all of his ability cards will also become yours. This will unlock Full Deck and So Many Choices. Once you have Maxus Helios, you don't have to finish the rest of Story Mode.

Step 3: The Battle Arena

There are four trophies that must be obtained in the various modes of the Battle Arena. Two of them must be obtained against CPU opponents. Two of them can be obtained against either CPU or human opponents. If you have a second controller, it's easier to do human opponents when possible. When you are facing the CPU, be sure to alter the battle settings to make things quicker. You can adjust the match time, the amount of health that you and your opponent have, and in the case of Duels, the number of rounds that decide the fight.

Step 4: "S" Rank and Upgrades in Interspace

Go back to Story Mode. In Interspace, you have to achieve an "S" Rank for every story battle on which you have not yet done so. See Perfection for tips. If after perfecting every stage, you still do not have enough core energy to buy every upgrade in the game, replay any map you like until you can complete Long Hard Road. You are now completely done with Story Mode.

Step 5: Skill Trophy Clean-Up

Any single-battle trophies or miscellaneous trophies that you do not yet have, you should be able to get in controlled duel matches in the Battle Arena.

General Tip:

In order to do well at Bakugan, you have to take advantage of elemental attributes. Before each battle, you are told the attributes of your enemies. Use this to decide which Bakugan and which hologram tower to use. The types are:

  • Pyrus (Red): Fire element. Strong against Darkus. Weak against Aquos.
  • Aquos (Blue): Water element. Strong against Pyrus. Weak against Ventus.
  • Darkus (Purple): Dark element. Strong against Haos. Weak against Pyrus.
  • Haos (Yellow): Light element. Strong against Subterra. Weak against Darkus.
  • Subterra (Orange): Earth element. Strong against Ventus. Weak against Haos.
  • Ventus (Green): Wind element. Strong against Aquos. Weak against Subterra.

Defeat Spectra's right-hand man.

Cannot be missed. This trophy unlocks upon completing the twelfth story mission. Recommended Bakugan is Mega Nemus, or a Magma Wilda with Max Combo upgrades. Recommended hologram is Haos. The enemies here are weak against Haos, but in my experience, your Haos Bakugan Nemus and Mega Nemus aren't very strong. I had an easier time using Magma Wilda, but your results may vary.

Defeat Spectra and stop his evil plans.

Cannot be missed. This trophy unlocks upon winning the final story battle. You are forced to use Maxus Dragonoid for this battle. If you have the core energy to spare, it will help to give him combo boost and combo max.

After a little bit into the battle, the game tells you an indirect way to kill the final boss. You have to do it this way. If you attack the boss, his life will keep refilling to maximum. Once you cut the boss's source of power, his invincibility will go away

Single Battle Trophies

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/776/26.jpgD-Fencehttp://www.ps3trophies.org/images/site/icons/trophy_bronze.png

Deflect an opponent's physical attack 5 times in a single battle.

Deflecting is different from a combo breaker. It's simply putting up your shield right before receiving an attack by holding :l2: and letting the enemy bounce his melee attacks off you.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/776/27.jpgDenied!http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/site/icons/trophy_bronze.png

Do ten combo breakers in a single battle.

See Untouchable.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/776/28.jpgUntouchablehttp://www.ps3trophies.org/images/site/icons/trophy_silver.png

Do ten perfect combo breakers in a single battle.

This can be an extremely annoying trophy. Be patient with it.

To do a combo breaker, press :l2: roughly when the icon prompts you to press it in the middle of being pummeled by an opponent's combo. If successful, you'll see the word "BREAK" appear on the screen. If you do an imperfectly timed combo breaker, you'll see the two Bakugan fly apart from each other. If you do it perfectly, you'll see what looks like your shield shatter into a rainbow for a split second, and you will not fly apart from each other. Getting Denied! isn't too hard, as it lets you do a combination of imperfect and perfect breakers to get the trophy. Untouchable is a lot harder.

To get Untouchable, I highly recommend you do this in a two player duel with two controllers. In order to get your Bakugan to survive long enough to do this in one round, choose Bakugan who have high defense or at least let the one you're attacking have a type advantage over you. Set health for the one you're pummeling to 150%.

Now, let your attacking Bakugan do a two-hit combo. Just hit :square:,:square: OR :triangle:,:triangle:. Then almost immediately after the second button press, hit :l2: on the other controller. You're going to need one controller in each hand to do this fast enough. It may take some tries to get the timing down. Once you see the sparkly rainbow break, you have done it correctly. Replicate your success until you can do it 10 times in a single round of fighting.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/776/31.jpgPower Hungryhttp://www.ps3trophies.org/images/site/icons/trophy_bronze.png

Pick up all three power-up types in a single battle.

Power-ups pop up randomly when buildings are destroyed. If you don't get this trophy naturally during story mode, go to the Battle Arena. Turn off targeting and start destroying buildings until you get one of each power-up.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/776/29.jpgBlack Belthttp://www.ps3trophies.org/images/site/icons/trophy_silver.png

Do all combos on a Bakugan's Combo List in a single battle.

If you pause during battle, you can bring up the Combo List. Simply enough, successfully execute each one of the combos in a single battle. If it helps, you can do this in Dual Mode against a helpless human opponent. Also set their health to 150% so they can take all the combos without dying.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/776/30.jpgGrand Masterhttp://www.ps3trophies.org/images/site/icons/trophy_silver.png

Do twenty or more hits in a single combo.

Completing a combo from the combo list will probably send enemies flying after 3 or 4 hits. So how do we get to 20? The easiest way is after beating the game. At that point, you get Maxus Dragonoid, who can do a 21 hit combo with a fully charged projectile attack.

But there's another more universal way to get high combos that will be helpful in getting "S" Rank for the Perfection trophy. With a combination of set-up punches and a combo ability card. If you don't press the button rapidly, putting space between inputs, you can get a hit combo up to 8-10 hits before sending the enemy flying.

Get a Bakugan with a combo ability card that does at least 15 hits. Dual Elfin, Magma Wilda, and Maxus Dragonoid all qualify, among others. Other Bakugan only have combo cards of 10 hits or even less. Let the ability card gauge charge all the way up, get a staggered manual combo going of at least 5 hits, then immediately transition into the combo ability card. It should continue the hit streak and go over 20.

Collection Trophies

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/776/43.jpgSo Many Choiceshttp://www.ps3trophies.org/images/site/icons/trophy_silver.png

Unlock every Bakugan in the game.

Simply finishing the Story Mode will gradually unlock every Bakugan in the game except for one. The last one is Maxus Helios, the strongest Vexos Bakugan. To get Maxus Helios, start a new Story Mode after beating the game. In the exploration mode before some missions, make sure to get every unopened chest. Some of them will contain Bakugan Traps. When you collect the last Trap, Maxus Helios is unlocked along with the trophy.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/776/24.jpgTreasure Hunterhttp://www.ps3trophies.org/images/site/icons/trophy_bronze.png

Get ten items from item boxes.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/776/45.jpgGo Figurehttp://www.ps3trophies.org/images/site/icons/trophy_silver.png

Collect every metal figure in the game.

See Full Deck.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/776/44.jpgFull Deckhttp://www.ps3trophies.org/images/site/icons/trophy_silver.png

Get every Ability card in the game.

The only thing you need to be worried about missing in this game are the treasure chests in exploration mode. Before about half of the missions in story mode, you have to run around on foot, navigating a map while avoiding robots and soldiers with flashlights. Each one of these stages has a set number of treasure chests. The chests always contain either a Vexos Pass Card, a Figurine, or an Ability Card.

While not all ability cards are obtained through treasure chests, the ones found in chests cannot be gotten anywhere else. Likewise, the Figurines cannot be found anywhere else. On top of that, you cannot replay exploration stages without starting Story Mode over from the beginning. If you press pause while in an exploration area, you can see the number of total treasure chests in the area and the number you have already found. Do not proceed to the stage exit until the pause menu says you have every treasure chest.

If you find every treasure chest in the game, you will get the Figurine trophy during the last exploration stage on your first playthrough. You will get the Ability Card trophy on your second playthrough when you unlock Maxus Helios (and thus unlock his personal ability cards).

Tips: Make sure you investigate every green dot on your radar. A green dot is always either core energy, a friendly human, or a treasure chest. If possible, try to go backwards from the beginning of the level. Several levels have core energy and treasure chests behind you from the start.

If you think you may have missed a chest on your first playthrough, don't freak out. You can get it on your second playthrough of Story Mode. However, if you miss a chest twice, you'll have to do Story Mode a third time, which would be a huge waste of time.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/776/36.jpg1-Uphttp://www.ps3trophies.org/images/site/icons/trophy_bronze.png

Purchase an upgrade for a Bakugan.

See Long Hard Road.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/776/37.jpgSix-Packhttp://www.ps3trophies.org/images/site/icons/trophy_silver.png

Purchase all upgrades for six different Bakugan.

See Long Hard Road.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/776/38.jpgLong Hard Roadhttp://www.ps3trophies.org/images/site/icons/trophy_gold.png

Purchase all upgrades for all Bakugan.

To upgrade a Bakugan, choose a Bakugan on the partner select screen before a story battle. You'll have the opportunity to spend core energy like currency on upgrades to your Bakugan. When every upgrade for every Bakugan is purchased, the trophy pops.

Do not grind for this trophy until you have done everything else. Every battle you complete nets core energy. You have to run through story mode twice and then replay levels until you have an S rank on all of them. Those are all opportunities for a lot of core energy needed for upgrades. Upgrades and core energy carry over to all playthroughs.

Even if you save upgrade grinding for last, it will still take you a long time. Hours. You get the most core energy from beating the last boss over and over again in the Interspace. As far as I know, this is the most efficient way to get core energy.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/776/23.jpgCollectorhttp://www.ps3trophies.org/images/site/icons/trophy_silver.png

Earn 100,000 in core energy.

You won't have to grind for this. You will get 100,000 core energy before you finish story mode the first time and certainly long before you have enough core energy to purchase all upgrades.

Battle Arena Trophies

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/776/39.jpgDuel Masterhttp://www.ps3trophies.org/images/site/icons/trophy_bronze.png

Win five duels against the CPU in Battle Arena Mode

Before getting started in Duel Mode, you can change the Battle Arena CPU to "Easy" and number of rounds to 1. This will shorten the amount of time it takes to beat the CPU five times. If you need to, you can also increase your health to 150% and decrease the CPU to 50%. Plus, you can choose a Bakugan for yourself and your opponent that gives you the superior type advantage. With all these perks, it should be easy. After you win, hit Retry and do it four more times.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/776/40.jpgOne Man Armyhttp://www.ps3trophies.org/images/site/icons/trophy_bronze.png

Obtain 250 or more points in a Battle Arena Free For All.

You can either get this trophy against a vacant second controller or the CPU. Make sure that you put the CPU on "Easy" and set the battle time to 300 seconds. Also make sure you have a Combo ability card and put the enemy's health at 50%. You get 1 point for each hit and 20 points for a kill. So you want lots of combos (such as from the ability card) and kills (from a weak enemy). In the closing seconds of the battle, kills are worth double. You should be able to get over 250 points in 300 seconds.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/776/41.jpgWrecking Ballhttp://www.ps3trophies.org/images/site/icons/trophy_bronze.png

Obtain 500 or more points in a Battle Arena Destruction Battle.

Once again, you can get this trophy against an unmanned second controller. If you choose to use the CPU, put it on "Easy." Either way, crank the time up to 300 seconds. While I was able to get One Man Army with the CPU, for Wrecking Ball it really is advantageous to use an empty controller, seeing as how you're racing another Bakugan to destroy crystals. Once again, you also get double points in the closing seconds. Kill enough crystals to get 500 points in 300 seconds.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/776/42.jpgChampion!http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/site/icons/trophy_silver.png

Win 30 times against the CPU in Battle Arena Mode.

This is 30 times total, and I think it might only be possible in Duel Mode. So go back to Duel Mode, put enemy health on 50% and rounds on 1. Then beat up someone until the trophy unlocks. This takes a while.

Misc. Trophies

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/776/21.jpgIllusionisthttp://www.ps3trophies.org/images/site/icons/trophy_bronze.png

Build a hologram tower.

See Hologram Tycoon.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/776/22.jpgHologram Tycoonhttp://www.ps3trophies.org/images/site/icons/trophy_silver.png

Build a hologram tower of each attribute.

You should get this trophy naturally during Story Mode. During the third mission, you gain the ability to add hologram towers to battles. Hologram towers distract enemies from attacking your landmark and can heal you if you stand under them. Very helpful. There is a hologram tower for each elemental attribute. You want to use the hologram of the element that best resists the enemy element. If for some reason you finish Story Mode without this trophy popping, just revisit any old map. Put down a tower of each type and replay the map until you've done it with all types.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/776/25.jpgGood Aimhttp://www.ps3trophies.org/images/site/icons/trophy_bronze.png

Throw your Bakugan to get an item.

During one of the early exploration areas, you are forced to learn how to throw Bakugan. You press :r2:, let the cursor lock onto an item or switch, then hit :cross: to throw. The first time you pick up some core energy with the throw command, you get the trophy.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/776/32.jpgGate Card Sethttp://www.ps3trophies.org/images/site/icons/trophy_silver.png

Open each type of Gate card at least once.

Gate cards occasionally appear in place of power-ups when things are destroyed. When they do, the environment changes to the element of your Bakugan. So, if you are using Dragonoid, gate cards will always be Pyrus. You need to activate a gate card with a Bakugan of each attribute type to unlock the trophy.

In my experience, gate cards appear more often from destroyed Vexos crystals than destroyed buildings. A couple of USA stages have tons of Vexos crystals, and that is the perfect place to farm gate cards.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/776/33.jpgB Studenthttp://www.ps3trophies.org/images/site/icons/trophy_bronze.png

Get B rank or higher in six Story Mode battles.

See Perfection.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/776/34.jpgHonor Rollhttp://www.ps3trophies.org/images/site/icons/trophy_silver.png

Get A rank or higher in twelve Story Mode battles.

See Perfection.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/776/35.jpgPerfectionhttp://www.ps3trophies.org/images/site/icons/trophy_gold.png

Get S rank in every Story Mode battle.

There are 17 story battles in the game. Every time you complete one, you receive a grade, with "S" being the highest possible grade. The goal here is to receive an "S" in all 17 battles.

Getting an "S" the first time you win a battle in Story Mode isn't necessary. You can replay all story battles in Interspace, which is accessible from Marucho's ship. It is actually easier if you wait and try to perfect many of the battles later when you are more proficient at the game and have stronger Bakugan.

The grade ranks are affected by three factors:

  • Combo: The longest combo you execute in battle is worth 50 points per hit.
  • Health: You receive a bonus for your remaining health percentage. 100% remaining health is worth 2000 points.
  • Buildings Destroyed: There is a negative bonus for the percentage of buildings on the map that get destroyed during the battle. If no buildings are destroyed, it's zero deduction. 10 points are deducted for each percentage lost. (ex. if 30% of buildings are lost, it's -300 to your total score).

The guide on xbox360achievements says that "clear bonus" is based on how fast you win the battle. I believe this is incorrect. I think each level just has a base amount of core energy it gives you for winning the battle, and that this has nothing to do with grade rank.

By far the most points to gain are from health. A 15-hit combo is worth 750 points, but 90% health is worth 1800 points. So priority #1 in all battles should be to finish with a lot of health.

Once you get hologram towers, they replenish your health as long as you stand next to them. Use this to your advantage, especially near the end of battle. On maps where the last thing you kill is a Vexos crystal, stand next to a hologram and get back to 100% health before winning. Even when the last thing standing is another Bakugan, it might be better to try and recharge while blocking enemy attacks.

It is hard to keep from destroying buildings in some crowded maps, but it sometimes helps to switch to a flying Bakugan if you're using a ground-based Bakugan. Battles that take place on the ground are sure to knock over some buildings.

For combos, make sure you bring a combo ability card and use it at least once. Sometimes I get "S" rank without a good combo of better than 5, so you may not have to be anal about it. It depends on the level.

For which Bakugan to use, it depends on the stage. If you wait until you finish Story Mode the first time, you can use Maxus Dragonoid in any map you choose, who is tied for the strongest Bakugan in the game along with Maxus Helios. Magma Wilda is one of my favorite Bakugan to use because not only does he have strong combo attacks but high defense as well. That defense usually means a few extra health points at the end of battle. The downside to Wilda is that he's ground-based, which makes him unsuited for protecting buildings in crowded levels.

One last thing I'll note is that increasing maximum health will NOT help your score. Your points are based on percentage of maximum health, not total health. Also, your landmark's health does not affect the building score. The landmark could be down to 10% health, and you could still get a perfect building score.

This is the biggest challenge in the game, perfect combo breakers notwithstanding. Good luck.

("S" Rank on Final Boss)

This deserves its own mention, because getting an "S" Rank on the last battle is hard. It took me many tries. Here's the strategy I used.

Use Maxus Dragonoid. Why? Because he's immune to lava damage and he's really strong. I tried Cross Dragonoid and Maxus Helios as well but noticed that neither of them could take down the crystal nearly as quickly.

Do not try to combo the boss to death. You can do it that way, but he is so good at breaking combos and obliterating your shield that you will lose tons of damage in the process. Taking lots of damage means no "S" rank, after all.

Instead, take a run-and-gun tactic with uncharged shots. Go in circles around the level, and the boss should not be able to hit you that often. Before the crystal becomes targetable, the map is smaller and harder to get away from the boss. When the crystal becomes the target, the map becomes larger. Make sure the crystal is between you and the boss at all times. Smack the crystal once or twice, then move clockwise or counterclockwise around it to stay away from the boss.

When the crystal is down, resume run-and-gun tactics. You SHOULD NOT use the combo ability card to get a high combo. Why? Because when you use a card, he uses a card, and there's a 75% chance that this will make your attack unable to hit and instead take a laser to the face.

Instead, get combo points this way. Wait until he uses his ability card (giant laser beam thing), dash sideways to hopefully avoid it. Then quickly charge your projectile attack to maximum and let it go. If you do it correctly, the boss should still be recovering from his special attack and a sitting duck for your own giant laser beam. If it's a direct hit, it can hit 21 times! The lowest score where I got "S" Rank was with 65% life, 21 max combo, and 0 building penalty (there are no buildings on this stage). However, using the same strategy I've won with over 90% life left. 65% is just a minimum to shoot for.

Make note that there are power-ups in rocks floating in the lava. If you are desperate you can destroy some looking for health powerups.

this game is more of a 3D robot action fighter, like Virtual On. There is no marble throwing. There are no controller-shaking battles.

I saw a commercial of the game, and now I want to try it xD

And thanks for the great guide! After reading "Perfection", it doesn't seem like a 6-7 anymore.

P.S. The image at the top could be a lot better with something else, but that's my opinion -.-

Hartlet: You're welcome! If I have helped one person, it's worth it to me.

golfdude: I don't even watch the show. I tried to watch a couple episodes, and I thought it was pretty bad to be honest, haha. It might not be for my age group, because I'm, you know, an adult. And I hate that theme song!

You can get the gate card trophy in any mode. I did it in story mode, going back to the USA level where you have to break tons of Vexos crystals to take down the barrier in the middle. But you can get gate cards in duel mode too, and it also counts. You don't really need to use two controllers if you do it in duel mode.

Hehe, I earned an S-rank on the final battle on my first try; it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be ;D (and yes, S on all levels already)

(Untouchable was pretty easy, too)

Just need to grind out more CE for all upgrades... Vexos Base (or possibly Egypt - Suburbs) is my pick for now. The last level seems longer...

Plat, here I come!

edit: Now that I played Earth's Core (finale) more, I'm starting to favor it. It's simply LESS painful than Vexos Base; and the boss is a slow noob. xD Make sure to use Maxus Drago.

You can easily land a 21-44 hit combo at the very beginning. Charge up ASAP and release when he flies slowly towards you. Bam! Descend from the platform and spam :circle: until the next dialogue begins. Stay behind the crystal until the objective changes; keep the boss directly oppposite from you at all times. Dash+:square: the crystal twice, then :square: once. Just spam :circle: until the boss is defeated; stay near and use the crystal as cover after a few shots and repeat. The crystal will help you avoid his special beam and he'll be wide open for shots.

wide open... hehe... shots... *giggles*.

I also got really good at beating the final boss. When I first fought him, I was like, "THIS IS HARD." And then I figured out my own strategy and got better and better at it as I was grinding out points.

It got to the point where a few times I got like 97% health remaining without even really trying. Funny how repetition can turn something that once seemed tough into something that is super easy.

Maybe I just stink for having a bit of a struggle in the first place. Someone gave this game a 2/10 difficulty, but I would like to think I made it easier for him with my guide! I didn't have a guide.
