Hip-Hop-Potamus
I have 2 unopened and never got around to finishing #1, are the stories connected? I see that Bioshock 2 has multiplayer, is there online trophies?
DMiZ
They are connected for obvious reasons, but I don't think it's necessary to have played/finished the first in order to grasp 2. And yes, there are several online trophies for the MP.

Ventara
If you're in no hurry, I suggest playing the first. I rented the second and wasn't able to finish it, so I wouldn't know the full implications of playing it first, but I believe you'll enjoy the first one a lot more if you played it first. Jay_Slim
If i played them out of order would it completely ruin the story for #1? Thanks for the help I don't think it would. If anything it might peak your curiousity to finish the first, which is waaaayy better.
TheJoker751
I'd say play the second first and the first second... Lol. Having played both I also think the first better.
Cyanide Breath Mint
Play the first is my advice. The first is a great game (better than the 2nd IMO) with all its 'Wow' moments throughout it. This one just feels more of the same with a piss poor MP tacked on. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the 2nd too...the first is just better for the overall experience. There is a continuity between these games so you'd be doing yourself a disservice playing it out of order.
Cauchy
If you have the option, I would definitely play Bioshock before playing Bioshock 2. I think you'll be able to fully take in, and therefore, better appreciate the games. Moreover, the actual gameplay of Bioshock is inferior to that of Bioshock 2. The last thing you want to do is play a game that has better controls and then go back and play with the inferior ones. That said, if you're really not in to the whole Bioshock universe, then Bioshock 2 is certainly a good stand-alone title.
dz06lt
no i wouldnt say its necessary but the first is a far superior game than the second
olimpia84
You should definitely not pass up on the first one. I think it's the better game and you can get it for cheap nowadays.
Cyanide Breath Mint
I should add: The first one's only $10, so...why not play it first?
metzou
I'd say that playing Bioshock 2 prior to playing Bioshock has a good chance of screwing up all the fun for you. Although the main plot of the second is, so to speak, spoiler-free, the diaries aren't. [spoiler=bioshock2]Seriously, the hidden room in Siren Alley with a Who is Atlas poster and one of Fontaine's diaries? Another Fontaine's diary, where he practices Atlas' voice? Lamb's W-Y-K diaries? There are a couple of minor spoilers in Father Wales' an Ryan's diaries as well.. l
Deadaim357
To appreciate the experience to the fullest, yes I'd say play the first one.
AUSPUFF
I should add: The first one's only $10, so...why not play it first? He already has the first one... he says "I haven't gotten around to finish the first one" in the 1st post. Guess he couldn't really get into it... That may change the whole topic. Jimbo76
Yeah Bioshock 1 is much better, but I dont think it matters if you play the 2nd game first. playing the second game has give me a taste to get the first again as its such a great game. puts the 2nd to shame really. RuivoM
You should AT ALL, play the first before going to the 2nd one... the story's completly linked and you'll lose a lot of the game enviroment if u don't play the first one because the 2nd is main characters based such a big daddy, little sisters, andrew rayen, etc.
PowerCobra98
Play #1 first. What nobody has mentioned yet is that there are many references to the first game embedded in the second. Everything from posters on the wall that reference people and places from the first (Jasmine Jolene; Eve's Garden; Sander Cohen, etc.) to pictures of the opening plane crash from the first game. It all just makes the second game feel more familiar and connected.
knkarm
I would recommend playing Bioshock before Bioshock 2. There are so many subtleties in the second game that you will only be aware of if you played the first. One of the trophies is called 9-Irony - that's totally lost if you haven't played the first game. I also thought the story of the first one, which also includes more of Rapture's history, was better. If you play Bioshock 2 first (or skip the first one altogether), I don't think it kills the experience. But if you play them in order, I think the overall experience is enriched. Hip-Hop-Potamus
Going back and playing #1 now, thanks for the suggestions fellas. Now i just gotta pray my PS3 doesn't crap out on me, been freezing a lot lately. Sucks to happen right before Heavy Rain and GoW3 and FF13
Eddafred
Not really necessary, but I think you'd enjoy Bioshock 2 a lot more if you tied all the loose ends in the first one. Not very important story-wise, but it does affect the ambiance of the second game's setting. Having experienced Rapture shortly after it's collapse, seeing how everything's gone from hell to even worse over the years, the decay of the architecture, the mental and social decay, and the tight stitch known as Sophia Lamb that barely holds together the mass of genetically enhanced sociopaths, and your struggle to scrounge up the few fragments of your humanity that are still intact.
