Hot Shots Golf: World Invitational is an arcade-style golf game that doesn’t take itself too seriously. From the start, you will have access to 5 Beginner Rank tournaments. Each rank also has a VS match that is unlocked by gaining stars for winning the tournaments. In order to progress to higher ranks, you will need to win the VS match for your current rank. Only a handful of characters will be available from the start. Additional characters will be unlocked for purchase in the in-game Shop. There is also an Easy Mode. This mode is not available from the start; it seems to unlock once you have difficulties with the Challenges. You can use it by selecting :square: when viewing the Challenges. There is no penalty for using Easy Mode so don't be afraid to use it if you are struggling.

One important distinction to make is the difference between an official round and an unofficial round. Since several of the trophies requiring an official course are highly luck-based, you'll want to be certain of a rounds status before spending too much time on any one trophy. Most of the Challenge courses count as official rounds but there are a few exceptions. Any course using the following in-game course settings will result in an unofficial round:

  • Mega Cup
  • Unlimited Power Shot
  • Gentle Breeze
  • No Wind
  • Real Golf Mode

VS (and VS2) matches also do not count as official rounds.

Online (Participate in the Daily Int'l Tournament) - Impossible due to server closure

This step may be completed at any time. You must have an online pass to participate in the Tournament. There are two ways to enter the Tourney:

  1. Select Daily Int'l Tourney from the game's splash screen. (Vita version)
  2. Select Daily Int'l Tournament from the "Online" menu.

The Tournament is asynchronous - meaning that all players play at their own pace whenever they decide to log on that day. Your score is recorded and you are told what place you are in out of the people who have already participated. Essentially, it is treated as a leaderboard. You do not have to win or even place in a particular percentage. However, you do need to finish the round. The trophy will pop after the round is completed.

At the end of this step you will have acquired:

(B) - Daily Participant

Step 1 - Win all Challenge tournaments and VS matches

There is no better way to learn this game than to jump right in. Despite the cartoonish presentation, this game is a golf game at heart. This playthrough should allow you to learn the game mechanics and refine your abilities to read the greens, adjust aim to compensate for wind, practice spins and perfect impact etc.

As you progress through the Challenges, you will unlock several story trophies. In addition, you will likely earn several of the Speciality Action Trophies (See Step 3) as well, without even focusing on them. You should purchase balls and clubs to complement your play style (I found the Big Air set to be particularly helpful). Also, if you feel comfortable with the Challenges, switch characters whenever you max out loyalty.

By the end of this step you will have acquired:

(B) True Dedication

(B) The Challenge Begins (H)

(B) So Long, Amateur League (H)

(B) A True Hot Shots Golfer (H)

(B) Chewing Up Challenges (H)

(B) The Climax! (H)

(S) Journey’s End…? (H)

(G) The Real Ending! (H)

Step 2 - Crown all Challenge tournaments and VS matches

After completing Step 1, all Challenges will now show a Crown Condition. You must now win each Challenge as well as fulfilling the Crown Condition. Several of the Speciality Action Trophies will be unlocked during this Step (if not unlocked in Step 1) since they are Crown Conditions. See here for a Guide to getting all the Crowns: LINK credit to Vamp1980.

By the end of this step you will have acquired:

(B) My First Chip-In

(B) My First Birdie

(B) Rockin' Score

(S) Greased Lightning

(S) Starry Night

(G) King of Kings ((H) in PS3 Versions)

Step 3 - Speciality Action Trophies

The number of Speciality Action Trophies left for this step depends on how skilled and/or lucky you were in the previous 2 steps. In this step, you should focus on character/gear setups with a particular action in mind.

By the end of this step you will have acquired:

(B) Overwhelming Power

(B) Putting Pro

(B) Watery Wonder

(B) Absolute Class

(B) Shot Type Selector (H) (Exclusive to Vita Versions)

(S) Perfect Spiral

(S) Chaser of the Flame

Step 4 - Shopping and other Cleanup

At this point, it is unlikely that you have been able to accumulate enough points to buy everything in the store. For points and/or to finish maxing out lesser used characters' loyalty, the best Challenge to repeat is 5-5. Because it is an 18 Hole Challenge, you will only need to play it 10 times with each character to max out loyalty. Also, depending on how well you play, you will earn between 8,000 and 10,000 points. Play on Easy Mode to minimize your risk of losing and missing out on the first place point bonus.

You also will probably not have scored either a Hole-in-one or a Double Eagle. These trophies are 90% luck, 10% skill. Good luck.

By the end of this step you will have acquired:

(B) Fancy Dresser

(B) Courses Complete!

(B) Audiophile

(B) Gear Collector

(B) Art Fancier

(B) Lobby Character Part Collector

(B) Fear the Receptionist! (H)

(B) A Definite Ace Appears (Exclusive to PS3 Versions)

(S) Costume Freak (H) (Exclusive to PS3 Versions)

(S) It's a Miracle! ((G) in PS3 Versions)

(S) Go for the Ace!

(S) Gear Master

(S) Lobby Character Part Lover ((B) in PS3 Versions)

(G) I Love Everybody!

(G) SOLD OUT

(G) Lobby Character Part Maniac ((B) in PS3 Versions)

Get every trophy.

UNOBTAINABLE DUE TO SERVER CLOSURE

As with all Platinum trophies, earn every other trophy to get this one.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1395/02.jpg Overwhelming Power (B)

Hit a drive over 350 yards in an official round.

You will eventually have access to several golfers who have a high power stat. Combining those golfers with the Big Air Clubs and Big Air Balls will allow you to smash drives over 350 yards on several courses. The earliest I was able to achieve this distance was with Pancho (Loyalty Level 1, Big Air Club Lv2, Big Air Ball Lv2). I used Hole 1 of the Legacy Golf Links (Challenge 5-1) but have also used the same setup with similar results in several other courses that were unlocked earlier. Use a power shot, a super top-spin and the :triangle: fine power adjustment at impact.

If you are having difficulty with Pancho (or Xiao Ling, who has a similar power level), then wait until you are able to access Max and/or upgrade the Big Air items to Lv3.

NOTE: It is not stated in the description but your ball must be playable at the end of the drive. I used the same setup with Pancho to smash a 400+ yard drive on Hole 10 of Harvest Hills by hitting it down the street but did not receive the trophy, because it stopped in the middle of the street and was declared unplayable.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1395/03.jpg Putting Pro (B)

Sink a putt over 45 ft long in an official round.

I found the easiest place to sink long putts was the Maple Leaf Golf Club because of the fairly level greens. My recommendation is to use Hole 1 from Challenge 1-1. When approaching the green, you want to land on the green as far away from the pin as possible. Check your distance from the hole; if you are less than 45 ft, turn around and putt away from the hole until your distance is over 45 ft. Once you’re over 45 ft, carefully line up your putt and sink it. If you are unsuccessful, quit the round and try again.

NOTE: You will automatically take a Gimmie stroke if you are within 3 feet of the hole and are over par. Also, you will automatically give up if you reach +8 strokes on any hole.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1395/04.jpg Watery Wonder (B)

Skip the ball across water three or more times in a row in an official round.

I discovered after much trial and error that the best place to complete this trophy was Hole 18 of Harvest Hills. I used Stuart (Loyalty Lv3, Turbo Spin Club Lv3, Standard Ball) with a 3W, a Power Shot and perfect impact from the tee. Aiming a little to the left of the center of the lake gave the ball enough room to bounce three times (the first time I hit the water in the center of the lake and it only had room to bounce twice).

NOTE: It is not stated in the description but your ball must be playable at the end of the drive. I was able to get 3+ skips several times on other courses with Yamato but the trophy didn't pop since it was unplayable (it hit the edge of the bank and sank).

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1395/05.jpg My First Chip-In (B)

Perform a chip-in in an official round.

A chip-in is a shot from off the green that lands in the hole. Chip shots from the fairway, bunkers, rough, and fringe are all valid chip-ins. The Maple Leaf Golf Club is a good place to earn this trophy because the course is fairly level and the wind is generally calmer.

If you are having difficulties, try using Yuna (or any golfer with a straight shot and high control) on Hole 1 of Challenge 1-1. Get to the green as quickly as possible and putt the ball onto the section of fairway that is closest to the hole. Turn and chip it in. (If you are grinding this trophy, you should combine this attempt with Greased Lightning, Perfect Spiral and/or Chaser of the Flame).

NOTE: You will automatically take a Gimmie stroke if you are within 3 feet of the hole and are over par. Also, you will automatically give up if you reach +8 strokes on any hole.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1395/06.jpg My First Birdie (B)

Score a birdie in an official round.

A birdie is scored any time you finish a hole at one under par. You shouldn't need to go out of your way for this trophy; it will probably be one of the first you will earn. Hole 1 of Maple Leaf Golf Club (Challenge 1-1) is an excellent place to obtain this trophy due to its short length and flat green.

If you are having difficulties, try using a character with maxed out loyalty and good control. Of the two starter characters, Yuna is a better choice for ball placement because she hits straight. Yamato has a slight draw. Try to land as close to the pin as possible on the second shot and take your time when lining up the putt for the Birdie attempt.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1395/07.jpg Rockin' Score (B)

Score an eagle in an official round.

An eagle is scored any time you finish a hole at two under par. Again, you shouldn't need to go out of your way for this trophy despite the increased difficulty compared to birdies.

It is possible to obtain this trophy on Hole 1 of the Maple Leaf Golf Club (Challenge 1-1) with Yuna at maxed out loyalty and the "Standard" club and ball. With this setup, you will be executing a chip-in eagle. It will take some practice and a little bit of luck.

Another early option is to use Pancho (Big Air Club Lv1, Big Air Ball Lv1). Pancho should be able to reach the green off the drive. Take your time when lining up your eagle attempt putt. If you have already obtained Putting Pro, then you should be experienced with reading the green.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1395/08.jpg It's a Miracle! (S) ((G) in PS3 versions)

Score a double eagle in an official round.

A double eagle is scored any time you finish a hole at three under par. A double eagle is also called an albatross. This trophy is highly dependent on luck. In order to score a double eagle on a par 4, you must hit a hole-in-one. On a par 5, you must be aiming for the pin on the second stroke. It is not possible to obtain this trophy on a par 3.

Once again, Maple Leaf Golf Club (Challenge 1-1) is the easiest course to obtain this on. Holes 1 (par 4), 3 (par 5), and 9 (par 5) all provide an opportunity for a double eagle. You will want a character with high power, high control and decent impact.

NOTE: I recommend not trying to grind this trophy until the very end. Due to the high degree of luck required for this trophy, you may want to combine this attempt with Go for the Ace! so that you don't have to hope for lightning to strike twice. You'll need a par 4 that is short enough you can reach the pin from the tee. The best options are Maple Leaf GC Holes 1 & 4, Kagurayama CC Hole 2, Harvest Hills GC Holes 3, 4, & 13, and Mt. Sakura CC (DLC) Holes 15 & 18. In my opinion, the best option is Kagurayama Hole 2 because it has several cup positions in the section of the green that you are most likely to hit, and it doesn't have small unpredictable hills in front of the green like Maple Leaf Hole 1 (which would be my second choice). Also, both of these options are early enough that you can quit and retry without spending too much time/effort trying to get to them.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1395/09.jpg Go for the Ace! (S)

Score a hole-in-one in an official round.

A hole-in-one is scored any time you finish a hole on the initial drive from the tee. This is another luck based trophy. The best opportunities to score a hole-in-one are par 3 holes. You will want a character with high control and high impact.

If you are grinding this trophy, then see It's a Miracle!

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1395/10.jpg Greased Lightning (S)

Perform a rising shot in an official round.

A rising shot is executed when a shot with a super top-spin hits the pin. A super top-spin is applied to the ball by pressing  on the backswing, holding  on the downswing through impact and landing a perfect impact. This ability is only available to characters with a level 3 loyalty.

Hole 1 of the Maple Leaf Golf Club (Challenge 1-1) is an excellent place to grind this trophy due to the generally milder wind conditions and the proximity of the pin to the edge of the green. It is possible to execute a rising shot from as close as 8 yards from the pin. Use the same method as described in My First Chip-In to set up your shot.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1395/11.jpg Perfect Spiral (S)

Perform a spiral shot in an official round.

A spiral shot is executed when a shot with super side-spin hits the pin. A super side-spin is applied to the ball by pressing one direction, :left: (or :right:), on the backswing, holding the opposite direction, :right: (or :left:), on the downswing through impact and landing a perfect impact. This ability is only available to characters with a level 3 loyalty.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1395/12.jpg Chaser of the Flame (S)

Perform a homing shot in an official round.

A homing shot is executed when a shot with a super back-spin hits the pin. A super back-spin is applied to the ball by pressing  on the backswing, holding  on the downswing through impact and landing a perfect impact. This ability is only available to characters with a level 3 loyalty.

Hole 1 of the Maple Leaf Golf Club (Challenge 1-1) is an excellent place to grind this trophy due to the generally milder wind conditions and the proximity of the pin to the edge of the green. It is possible to execute a homing shot from as close as 10 yards from the pin. Use the same method described in My First Chip-In to set up your shot.

I had some difficulty getting this shot to activate. Ultimately, I used Yuna (Maxed loyalty, Turbo Spin Club Lv3, Pin Hole Ball Lv2) and was able to activate the shot by hitting the pin in the air without first hitting the ground.

Raise one character’s loyalty to max.

See I Love Everybody!

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1395/18.jpg I Love Everybody! (G)

Raise all characters' loyalty to max.

Loyalty is awarded based on the number of holes played. Each character starts at loyalty level 0 and will need to play 180 holes to max loyalty. As you increase loyalty, you gain additional abilities. Also, with each increase you gain +1 to the number of Power Shots the character can use per round.

  • Level 1 – Fine Power Adjustment. (Pressing :circle: on impact slightly lowers power, :triangle: slightly increases power.)
  • Level 2 – Extra Power Shot. (This refers to the ability to gain a small boost by tilting the Vita during impact.)
  • Level 3 – Homing, Spiral and Rising shots may now be activated.
  • Level 4 (Max) – Perfect Impact Control Boost

If you are following the Roadmap, you should be switching characters whenever you max out a character's loyalty. You might not max out all characters' loyalties before finishing Starry Night and King of Kings. If this is the case, it will be necessary to grind out the remaining loyalties.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/1395/23.jpg SOLD OUT (G)

Purchase every item in the shop.

As the description states, you must buy every item in the shop. You will need 1,357,500 points to purchase all non-parts dispenser items in the store.

NOTE: You may pop the individual shopping trophies quicker by saving your points and purchasing the necessary items all at once without exiting the Shop (exiting the Shop activates the auto-save). If you then hit the :ps: button and swipe out of the game, those purchases will not be saved. This does not work with the Lobby parts. Ultimately, you will still need to purchase all items for SOLD OUT but this method allows you to pop a few trophies early.

The VS matches are slightly different from the regular challenges. Instead of playing a full round while keeping track of how far over/under par each golfer is, each hole is awarded to the golfer with the lowest number of strokes. The round allows for 9 holes but will be called early if:

  1. You are 3 up.
  2. Your opponent is 3 up.
  3. If there are not enough holes left for the losing golfer to tie or beat the current leader.

The VS match will also go into Sudden Death if both players are even after the 9th hole. When in Sudden Death, the first player to win a hole wins the match.

Playing the VS games regularly can be challenging but they are significantly easier when playing on Easy mode. In Easy mode, your opponent will tend to lose a stroke or two to poor shots even when it seems that no golfer would. The key to winning is to balance caution with aggression but by the time you get to the VS match, you should have played on their course a few times and hopefully have learned where each shot should be placed. If you can get par or birdie on every hole, you should win easily.

Thank you, I'm still trying to grind out the last few percent so I can submit it..and I'm missing some of the Concept Art and verification on a couple trophies but other than that it's mostly finished and I'm fairly certain what I wrote for those is correct.

From what I can tell, there just aren't a lot of trophy hunters with this game...that's the only reason I can think of that it wasn't made earlier.

EDIT: Guide is finished

This is driving me crazy!! Haha! I only need a Homing Shot and Spiral Shot to get my Platinum, but they are so hard to pull off >_< I've spent every free moment in the past 2 days playing the first hole of 1-1 trying. I just want my Plat :( hahaha. Anyone got any tips? The hardest part for me is actually hitting the pin, either the wind, or the balls lie mess it up, and when I do hit the pin, it's when I've failed to hit perfect impact :p

EDIT: Hurray! After so long trying I finally got a Homing Shot! And I earned the trophy with a double bogie, so it doesn't need to be par or better :) now I just need to get a Spiral Shot, hopefully it doesn't take me as long as it took for the Homng Shot :p

EDIT2: Didn't take long at all for the Spiral Shot :D the Platinum is mine!! And I earned the Spiral Shot from the fringe at 5.1yds, with Lani/TurboSpin/TurboSpin :)

Thanks for posting this guide, it's been a big help. I'm actually playing the PS3 version, but it appears as if everything is the same between the two versions.

I just wanted to make a comment on a couple of your postings for various trophies.

For the "Greased Lightning" trophy, and for the "Chaser of the Flame" trophy, you have the command inputs for both of them as "Up", then "Down", rather than one of them being "Down, then "Up".

Other than that, everything looked great and was a big help. Thanks again!

I'll be gettin' that Plat in no time!

It's not the same. The PS3 version has different crown challenges and one hidden trophy different from the Vita version.

About these trophies: The trophy on PS3 is "A definite Ace Appears" and the Vita Trophy that doesn't exist on PS3 is "Shot Type Selector".

Thanks for pointing that out! Turns out I also said super topspin for both of them as well. Changed the Chaser of the Flame description due to your feedback.

Just so you know. You do not need to hit the pin in the air before the ball hits the ground for a homing shot to activate.

Ive had three types of homing shots happen to me:

1. Misses the pin in the air, lands on the ground, backspins and burns the ground misses the hole. Total failure

2. Misses the pin in the air, lands on the ground, backspins and burns the ground but goes INTO the hole. No trophy. Missed the pin requirement.

3. Misses the pin in the air, lands on the ground, backspins and burns the ground, but hits the hole at an angle so it hits the pin first, then the ball slowly backed off, and went back into the hole. Trophy unlocked.

I never once got a shot like the videos, where the ball hits the pin in the air and goes all crazy and bounces off the pin like 5 to 6 times then goes in.

But anyway, ground does not factor into it. As long as it tinks the pin before the ball goes into the hole its acceptable, that is in flight, or rolling back to the hole.

It's pretty finicky. Obviously, the ball must have backspin in order to activate the shot. If the ball hits the ground as it is travelling toward the pin and then hits the pin, the ball loses the backspin upon contact with the ground and won't activate. Striking the pin in the air is the best way to ensure that you ball doesn't lose backspin before striking the pin. I've never heard of anyone else doing it the way you describe, but since the ball is spinning back toward the pin you obviously still had the backspin to activate the homing shot. A lot of people have complained about this trick shot.

Yes, it can still be platinumed. I just started playing it a few weeks ago and it's definitely been a challenge, but it is doable.

There is one online trophy which does require the online pass, so if you picked it up used then you'll probably need to buy one of those. It's a simple trophy though...basically just play 18 holes in the daily tournament and you get the trophy regardless of your final score.

It's been a fun game, but like I said and the previous poster said...there are definitely some grindy and a few more difficult (and somewhat luck based..) trophies.
