Back Up Your Settings File

Back up your settings files folks. This has all of your stats that relate to trophies. I had the game lock up yesterday trying to get into a co-op game. As a result, all of my stats reset to zero, including my kills because my original settings file became corrupted. With the latest patch apparently bringing more freezes, be sure to take the precautions so that you don't lose your stats.

Unfortunately, the settings file is locked, so doing a back up of it is more difficult. If you have PS+, you'll be ok because of the Cloud.

Does a full hard drive to USB hard drive backup that file. I have never done a restore just backup so no idea if those also get backed up or not.

I don't understand why they lock that file, at least the main save is not locked like in some games ie Deus Ex.

If you do a full HDD back up, it will do the entire hard drive.

Hmm. Odd. Ive put over 40hours+ in SP and almost 10hours in MP and havent had a single freeze. Guess I better back everything up to Cloud just to be safe in case it should happen.

Thanks for the heads up Olsen

i do not have PS+. so is there a work-around for backing up the locked settings file ?

You should still be able to upload your files to a USB pen if im not mistaken.

Locked saves can't be backed up anywhere except to the Cloud, unless you want to backup and restore your entire HDD everytime a file goes bad (trust me, you don't).

Hmm. Well that sucks then. Learn something new everyday! :p I rarely backup files to a USB pen/HDD myself, so wasnt sure!

Better hope Bioware will hurry up with a new patch to make the freezing stop.

The settings/profile file can not be copied to USB, it only shows the PSN+ as a destination for that file.

All the save data files can be copied, the save file is one large folder structure of many files combined to make all the 32 or so possible saves that a ME save data folder can hold.

Not sure the max in ME3, ME2 had around 30 before it got full of saves. This is the manual saves you do. there is also the quick save which is a new one.

NOTE: if any one of these files corrupts the whole thing blows up it does not matter if you have 1 save in there or 30 none will work. Based on ME2.

That must be a pain if you lost the kills stat... if you need to get to 5,000...

Yeah, I lost it. I was over 3000 kills. I'm at a grind spot where I can get 40-50 kills in three minutes though. I've spent about an hour there and over 600 kills. I'll be back where I was soon.

Happened to me too, i was at 3k kills, game froze, and i went back to 0. Luckily I had all the other trophies, so now its just grinding to 5k and gold missions and ill have my plat.

where is that grind spot?

It's at the end of the first part of Priority: Earth. Right after you blow up the reaper cannon, you'll have to survive a wave of a banshee and infinitely spawning cannibals before getting to the shuttle. Don't go to the shuttle and stay in place killing cannibals as they appear. Once you fail the mission, just hit resume and do it again.

This same exact thing happened to me. I froze in a co-op game and it corrupted my profile save and set all my stats back to zero. Fortunately, I had a backup on the cloud so I only lost kills for one day.

Unfortunately, I think I'm screwed on my Unwavering trophy because the game tracks how many missions you've completed in the profile save. I didn't restore my previous game save because I didn't want to backtrack so I have missions completed in the campaign but no credit for them in the accomplishments menu.

That is some LONG grinding though.. I don't know if I could handle playing hours and hours on end at the same spot...

Yeah, actually came to post about this. It happened to me when I was trying to make a room for my friends and I to play MP. Did a hard freeze and when I came back on I saw the settings file had been corrupted.

For the accomplishments that you guys did have before the corruption, say like Overload Specialist, it's lit up but has 0/100 right? Is there anyway that'll fill up again because it's just sort of annoying not seeing the bar filled up underneath the lit up accomplishment. Does it start over in a new playthrough or what?

I've been backing up everyday to the cloud since it happened till I finish the Insanity and Veteran trophy.

I also posted my issue with this originally on the SBN forums here: Game froze and the Settings file was corrupted.

It happened to me... twice apparently.

The game froze trying to play mp last night and I just quit. Today when I started playing I realized my kills had reset. I finished the mission I was on, quit the game, then copied over my settings file from the PS Plus cloud. But that meant I lost the credit for finishing the third last mission on insanity (the mission I had beat prior to copying over my file).

Looking at my trophies it must have happened to me during one of my earlier freezes and I didn't notice. I finished the game on insanity (got the insanity trophy) with only 902 kills, and unwavering is listed as 22/27.

Anyone know if you can just reload saves prior to the start of certain missions and beat them on insanity to fill in the missing mission gaps? Or does this require another full insanity run. I don't want to have to play the last levels again...

Motherfucker. I saw this thread, read it, and decided it was a good idea to backup my settings file. After I finished my MP match first, of course. Lo and behold, the game froze for the first time after accumulating over 3000 kills. FUUUUUUUUUUCK.

It'll fill up again, you just have to complete the requirements a second time. It's dumb.
