Iceyice
I hear the rave reviews. Should i get into this series? What game does this compare to? In other words, is it like Deus Ex:Human Revolution? Like Dead Space? Resident Evil? Nascar Thunder?(Just kidding with that one!) Someone help me out. One more '?' If i started playing '3,' would i be lost as to what the story is about?
Rawanz
If you like action RPGs, then Mass Effect is a perfect game to try. If you want to compare it to anything, the closest would be Deus Ex:HR. You dont need to have played ME1 and 2, to play 3. ME3 will fill you in on the story for newcomers. But if you are unsure if you like the game or not. ME3 is created so you can either be a brand new player, or an old "veteran". I would say buy ME1, remember its for PC and xbox only. Otherwise ME2 would work aswell. ME2 got a 10-15mins comic at the start of the game, to tell everything that happend in the first game. You wouldnt be lost in the story at all. Cause thers is quite a lot of "falling back" on what happend, and it works really well. If you like Action RPGs, i cant recommend these games enough. Also, you can buy both ME1 and ME2 dirt cheap now. And ME2 comes with pretty much all the dlc, if its new of course.
Bounty V
While you don't HAVE to play ME1 or ME2 to get the story, I certainly think you'd enjoy it. You can get ME2 with the Cerberus Pack off of PSN for $20, then the Arrival DLC for $7 so you can have 100% trophies.
kfree7
Yeah, I'm going to give ME2 a try before buying this one.
digiboy123
I personally really dislike RPGs, but I gave ME2 a shot. I dunno how far into the game I got before I got uninterested (choosing conversation REALLY puts it off for me), but my trophy percentage for it was at 14%. If you like RPGs in general, or as the poster above called it an action RPG, sure, give it a round.
BaldWombat
Starting with at least ME2 is recommended. Part of the appeal to the game is the ability to tailor the story over 3 games to yourself and your choices and the third game should bring all of that to a head. Iceyice
Thanks for the responses, PSN fam. I really don't like RPG's, could never see the appeal of Final Fantasy, since for one, there seems to be no 'final' for that series, but I LOVED Deus Ex:HR, so let me check the demo first & maybe you'll see more from me on this series. I know you can't wait!

I know you can't wait! The original Final Fantasy was supposed to be the last game Square made so they made a game they wanted to make thinking it would be their last. It wasn't. Now the name is just ironic.
Str8Flushin
I was never a huge fan of the series, I remember popping in the first game and being bored to death and not even giving the series a chance after that (huge mistake). Recently I downloaded the ME3 demo and the combat was so fluid and awesome that I had to go back to the previous ones!Downloaded ME1 (PC) and grinded through the extended boring beginning and the story began to sink its teeth into me. The combat, look and overall feel of ME1 is so far below that of the ME3 demo it's not even comparable. So if that is all you truly care about then don't bother going back and playing ME1. If you care about story/lore I highly recommend you go back and shape your own experience in the previous games!
pgharavi
Without question, yes, you should play ME1 and ME2 before ME3.
Veritas7Ax
Playing other Bioware games will at the very least, get you used to the "style" of game and key aspects in their games, such as the moral choice system, heavy story and dialogue, side quests, and such. Games like KOTOR I & II and Dragon Age I & II will have similarities in those areas. They all have different interfaces, HUDs, etc, but are still similar in their construction. Very true, Bioware has their own style of gameplay. Although, KOTOR 2 was made by Obsidian.
oversoul53
I hate when people make threads like these. "oh should I start the story from the beginning or start from the end and not know what the hell is going on?" that's like watching the third Lord of the Rings first. Well we're on the subject here's the best order in which to play the Assassin's Creed games: Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood Assassin's Creed Assassin's Creed: Revelations Assassin's Creed II
Duskfire
Maybe its just me, but I wouldnt even consider playing the third game in a trilogy without playing the first two if possible. Not to mention, the games are awesome in their own right and should be given a shot by everyone.

I remember also HATING the first game and I shelved for over a year before I picked it up again. I felt like a true jackass after I ended up beating it. That game was so fkn epic it wasnt even funny. ME2 built upon it and the combat was even better. Now with ME3, well.....everyone already knows its going to be good. This is easily my top series ever for a video game. Veritas7Ax
Very true, Bioware has their own style of gameplay. Although, KOTOR 2 was made by Obsidian. Right, somehow I keep forgetting that. I hate when people make threads like these. "oh should I start the story from the beginning or start from the end and not know what the hell is going on?" that's like watching the third Lord of the Rings first. Well we're on the subject here's the best order in which to play the Assassin's Creed games: Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood Assassin's Creed Assassin's Creed: Revelations Assassin's Creed II While I don't disagree with that, I think there are times when playing a sequel can get you really invested in the original game. Example: I played MGS2 without ever playing the original. Obviously, when the game referenced back to stuff with Ocelot, Snake and Otacon's relationship, Meryl, Gray Fox, any of these name drops and such, I was pretty in the dark. Of course, there are dozens of similarities between the two games because that was actually part of MGS2's plot (the whole "simulation" thing). Long story short, it got me really interested in playing the original and I searched all over for it. This was right about the time PS1 games were starting to disappear from Gamestops and stuff. If it's the case where it's the third, fourth, fifth etc. game in the series, then yeah, it'd be better to start from the beginning, or at the very least, don't go in a weird order. RoachAndRizla
I don't necessarily think you NEED to play them, but if you have the time then yeah you may as well give them a go! They really are indeed great games, but tbh with you, i don't think I'm going to pick up ME3 for a good while, seeing as a lot of time and effort should be put in when playing a game like this. Misantropus
Well, if anyone thinks watching Return of Jedi BEFORE Star Wars and Empire Strikes Back is a good idea, go ahead, you'll still like the movie...
joker-_-32988
Well, if anyone thinks watching Return of Jedi BEFORE Star Wars and Empire Strikes Back is a good idea, go ahead, you'll still like the movie... you could play mass effect 3 and like without playing 1 and 2. if you want to get invested in the story and get all you can out of it it's worth playing the previous ones. plus mass effect 2 isan't that hard of a platinum. Moving On
While I, as a gamer with a PS3 but no Xbox, have played Mass Effect 2 without every having played the original Mass Effect and had no trouble getting into the game, I would think it might be a bit harder to still get into the story now, with the third game in the trilogy. I assume BioWare is making this game accessible to new players, but still: people that haven't played the previous games should definitely consider getting ME2 before buying and playing ME3. And since ME2 is a very good game... why not?

And since ME2 is a very good game... why not? Apparantly, if you don't import a save file the game will assume that you have never played ME before and adjust the dialog to account for that. I haven't had this confirmed but have heard it from some IGN editors.
